Our Mandate
Letter from the Editor Caledon is at a crossroads. On the one hand, it is an established town with a vibrant and close knit community. It is world renowned for being one of the best and safest places to live, as well as for its rolling hillsides and equestrian accomplishments. On the other hand, it has been forced to accept growth. It only makes sense to have a means to come together as a community to discuss issues that have an impact on us. Together we can affect change and have a say in what goes on.
The SouthFields Residents Association (SVRA) is a volunteerbased organization led by Kenneth Bokor. Ken has over five years of experience in leading the nonconfrontational style of community based organizations ba that we hope to th develop here, as well. de Our goal is to attract Ou and encourage an fellow residents to fell actively participate in, contribute to, and support the realization of a sustainable, safe, and vibrant live, work, play community. Yevgenia Casale
• Serve as liaison between residents and various interest groups such as local organizations, businesses, fellow residents, and Town Council. • Encourage resident involvement in the promotion of a safe and vibrant community. • Support local initiatives which work toward enhancing a Live, Work, Play Community. • Hold regular meetings for residents to socialize and discuss issues of interest. • To develop relationships with various businesses, groups, and organizations who can contribute to the successful and consistent delivery of actions related to the mandate.
A word from Kenneth Bokor Dear Village of SouthFields resident, My name is Kenneth Bokor, Chairman of the Village of SouthFields Residents Association. Together with my Cofounder, Yevgenia Casale, we would like to welcome you to our new community. This newly-formed volunteer group is here to represent the interests of Village of SouthFields residents. Our community will be growing at a fast pace over the next few years. It is important that we have a voice to discuss issues and strategies to maintain a strong and vibrant neighbourhood. We hope to grow our Association Team by welcoming a few more volunteers. Our current plans are simple: To hold regular resident meetings and provide a forum for communication between residents and elected officials to foster a spirit of cooperation between the Town, our builders and investors in helping to shape our community for the future. We have exciting plans. Follow us on twitter.com/ SFVillageVoice for the latest developments. The Village is part of the Mayfield-West plan and will experience growth over many years. We hope that you will provide your voice to our Community and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.
!
We hope you enjoy your The next VSRA meeting will be on: new home and community! Thurs., Sept. 9th, 2010 Regards, (7 p.m. - 9 p.m.) at Margaret Dunn Public Library at Kenneth Bokor 20 Snelcrest, Caledon, in Valleywood.

Caledon Town Councillors
Ward 2 Regional Councillor Allan Thompson, has been an invaluable resource and supporter of our efforts to form a Residents Association, as well as this publication. Allan has been instrumental in setting up meetings with Town Council, offering advice, and pointing us in the right direction.
Ward 2 Area Councillor Gord McClure’s parents always said, “Be a good lad, work hard, and one day you will have your own farm.” Gord looks after Town business just as he would the business of his own farm. He treats Ward residents as friends and neighbours, helping the best way he can: Through hard work and dedication.

Town of Caledon’s economic growth and development plan The Town of Caledon has been preparing to embrace growth for a number of years. The Ontario Municipal Board has mandated that Caledon’s current population of roughly 68,000 should balloon up to 84,444 by 2021.

Fun Facts
• In 1973, the name ‘Caledon’ was selected by public referendum. • The County of Peel was created in 1805 after the British Crown purchase the southern part of the Mississauga Tract on the shore of Lake Ontario. • In 1818, the County purchased the remainder of the Mississauga Tract in order to extend the northern boundary of Canada, which was opened for settlement in 1820.
• The arrival of the Toronto Grey & Bruce, Hamilton & Northwestern and Credit Valley railways in the 1870s spurred further settlements at various junctions. • Development was also influenced by the area’s major landforms, including the Peel Plain, the Niagara Escarpment and the Oak Ridges Moraine. • While some historic hamlets have disappeared over time, Caledon’s present-day communities continue to reflect early settlement patterns.
A bit about Caledon In telling people that you are moving to Caledon you have probably found that people always seem to respond the same way: ‘Oh, Caledon is nice!’ Being new to the area, we knew about the equestrian accolades and that according to the March 5, 2008 issue of Maclean’s magazine, Caledon’s crime score is 87% below the national average. What we had no idea about were all the hidden charms and treasures. Now, not a day goes by without discovering a new marvel to enjoy.
The town is actually made up of a combination of rural service centers, villages, hamlets, industrial or commercial centers, and rural communities. Over the next decade, the town’s population will grow quite a bit, with a large portion of that to take place in Mayfield-West, home to our Village of SouthFields. Aside from SouthFields, the villages of Caledon are comprised of Alton, Bolton,

Caledon Village, Cheltenham, Mono Mills, and Inglewood. The hamlets include Albion, Belfountain, Campbell’s Cross, Cataract, Claude, Melville, Mono Road, Terra Cotta, and Wildfield. Industrial and commercial centers include Sandhill, Tullamore, and Victoria. Though we are surrounded by rolling hills and farmland we are never too far from big city comforts. After all Brampton, Orangeville, and even downtown Toronto, are all in close proximity. Living in the Village of SouthFields, we are never too far from big city comforts while savoring the advantages of country life.

Come July 17th, the Broadway Farm’s Market will welcome our village for a do not miss event. Come out and enjoy the fine fare, entertainment and chance to meet friends, neighbours, and members of town council.
We will begin the journey the most natural and obvious choice: Broadway Farm’s Market. The Market is walking distance from the Village, since it is the farm directly adjacent to us. Great care has been taken to ensure that everything about the place is a delight to all five senses. You never know what you will smell when you walk in but you’re sure to want to eat it. The family run farm market specializes in farm fresh and frozen meats, gourmet foods, and culinary items. Growers and suppliers have been carefully selected to ensure that they meet the same expectations and standards as those of their own Beef Farm operation. At the market you will enjoy a large selection of meat, including Beef, Free Range Chicken, Lamb, Pork and Wild Game. From May to August the farm features fresh Wild B.C. Salmon. The gourmet cheese counter features a large variety of fine cheeses and if you are looking for the latest and greatest gourmet kitchen

Day-tripping Editor’s Picks: The Alton Mill The Alton Mill is a beautiful 19th-century stone building that has undergone extensive rehabilitation and now serves as a vibrant arts centre in the Caledon hills, just south of Orangeville.
events such as weddings and business functions.
Owners Jordan and Jeremy Grant of the Seaton Group, had a daunting task on their hands when they decided to inject new life into the Alton Mill. They felt that the building and the site deserved a use that was accessible to the public. But the 23,000-squarefoot structure was in serious disrepair and needed $5 million in upgrades.
Built in 1881 on the banks of Shaw’s Creek, a tributary of the Credit River, it was originally a woollen mill, sewing fleece-lined long underwear for distribution across Canada. Subsequently, it became a latex rubber factory that lasted until 1982, producing such products as balloons for the Disney Corporation and condoms for soldiers in the Second World War. Today it is home to more than 30 artists working in 15 studios. There are three art galleries, retail shops, a cafe, a small industrial heritage museum in the original Turbine Room, a yoga/pilates studio overlooking the millpond, and venues for special
with modern conveniences, it still houses an authentic sense of place and history.
Eventually they partnered with Headwaters Arts, a non-profit association of 160 artists in Caledon, Erin and Orangeville to secure $1.75 million in federal and provincial grants to help finance the project. The balance of the money was raised privately.
The building’s thick stone walls and rustic timber beams exude a comfy, warm atmosphere. While the structure has been updated
After many years of planning and three years of on-site construction, the Grant brothers were recognized last fall for their vision and perseverance,
Southfields Village Voice. page 7 winning a Heritage Canada Foundation national achievement award. Now the Alton Mill is once again playing an integral part in the economic and social life of the community.
It’s wonderful to see so much life and vibrancy in this once-derelict building. There are painters, potters, print makers, framers, weavers, jewellers, among others. Rather than working away in isolation in home studios, the artists have created a collaborative community. Art classes for children and adults are offered through the Alton Mill School of Art, yoga and pilates classes through 2bfitt studio, and delicious lunches and baked goodies on offer at Shaw’s Creek Cafe. My Fair World sources and sells fair trade products from around the globe, while the Alton Mill Gallery stocks ceramics, glassware and hand-turned wooden bowls, and mounts rotating exhibitions of contemporary paintings and sculpture. The Dam Gallery shows local work by members of Headwaters Arts, and
the Bartlett Gallery features a stable of Canadian artists. The place has an amazing effect on people. We never see anyone whether customers or tenants - in a bad mood. It’s a great environment in which to work, especially in the warm weather, when the windows on the south side of the building are open to let in the sound of the rushing waters of Shaw’s Creek., and visitors can walk the grounds, enjoying the outdoor sculpture placed around the property. During the coming months, the Alton Mill will host a number of events. On Sat. July 10: Doors Open Caledon gives visitors an opportunity to explore the historic architecture of the Mill. Activities will include: Milling About, in which studio artists will be painting architectural features of the building plein air. On Sat July 17 & Sun July 18:

From July 7 to Aug. 8, The Colour and Form Society presents an exhibition of paintings & sculpture. Opening reception: Sat. July 10 from 1 to 4pm.
The Dam Gallery has Hot Art, Cool Jazz, through July 11, an exhibition of work by regional artists in conjunction with the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival. On July 14 through to Sept 5 the SGI Juried Show Preview will showcase works to be featured in the Headwaters Arts Festival, Sept. 24 to Oct. 11.
