Dear Readers

I

t is the second year since we live more or less changed lives compared to the situation before the COVID19 pandemic. Although the situation is beginning to normalize, there is still a lot of uncertainty ahead. The epidemiological dance between the old and the new normal is hardly unpredictable in the long run. Although at first it may have seemed interesting to work from home, hold online classes, and speak at virtual conferences, more and more people are feeling saturated with this online lifestyle. With strict epidemiological measures, the first live conferences and meetings began to be held again. You can also find information about one of them on the pages of this newsletter. I hope it will be held as planned.

for all other professionals who are professionally related to the different areas of forensic odontology and want to extend own knowledge. It is nice to see two universities involved in the realization of this study. I wish a lot of success to this project. Further information and enrolment details can be found in this issue. And at the end, I invite you share your forensic experience with the IOFOS community by preparing meeting reports and other texts. Your contributions for the next issue of IOFOS newsletter should be sent up to November 15th 2021. Your texts should be in MS Word (max. 2 pages, 1800 characters per page and up to 2 images), accompanied by a portrait photo of the author and affiliation data. More details are available below in the Instructions for authors. Contributions should be sent to vodanovic@sfzg.hr.

Although the pandemic has locked us in our homes and denied us the usual ways of networking and exchanging ideas at conferences, this has not stopped some of us from starting new projects. Professor Cristiana Palmela Pereira from University of Lisbon, Portugal started a new specialization course in forensic odontology. This one-year course is created for dental practitioners who wish to gain experience in forensic odontology, and

Thank you! Yours Marin Vodanović

Dear colleagues and friends of forensic odontology, Hrvoje Brkić President of IOFOS University of Zagreb School of Dental Medicine, Zagreb, Croatia

brkic@sfzg.hr www.brkic.eu

H

ere we are already in the first volume of our IOFOS Newsletter 2021. I hope you are well and healthy in the preparation of some new project.

Palmela Pereira from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Lisbon. I believe that other university institutions will follow their example. A new date for the IOFOS Congress in Dubrovnik has not yet been chosen. The reason for this is well known. The Organizing Committee and the Executive Board believe that all national associations should participate in the congress, and they are largely unable to participate due to the pandemic. We will notify you in a timely manner of a new congress date in accordance with the pandemic situation.

There haven’t been many events in the past, but I would look back at a few of the following that I list. Our representative in Interpol in the Subgroup of Forensic Odontology, Irena Dawidson, successfully completed her term, and was replaced by Professor Ruediger Leesig as President. The recent electronic elections have resulted in a new deputy chair Dr. Selina M. Leow from Australia. Congratulations to the newly selected couple who will lead the Sub-group of Forensic Odontology. And many thank you to Irena for the great leadership in the past period!

And last but not least I want to inform you that our university textbook Forensic Odonto-Stomatology by IOFOS has been distributed around the world from Japan in the east to Nevada in the west. The owners of this textbook are very satisfied with the quality, content, written material and price. I am glad that together we achieved the goal we set back in 2017 in Leuven.

The University of Lisbon has organized and is starting a Specialization Course on Forensic Odontology. This is extremely important because forensic odontology permeates higher education. The supervisor of this specialization is Professor Cristiana

Stay well and looking forward, Hrvoje Brkić

legal authorities. Forensic Odontologists provide an important service to the community in both civil and criminal jurisdictions. Before applying, prospective students should consider that the nature of the concepts and casework required are often confronting and may be distressing to some people.

The specialization in Forensic Odontology is designed to provide practicing health professionals and all the professionals related with skills and experience in the field of forensic odontology. A forensic odontology qualification allows dentists to perform forensic examinations as required by law enforcement agencies, courts, or medical examiners (coroner). The specialization offers an emphasis on practical aspects of forensic odontology and an in-depth understanding of the correct professional handling, examination, interpretation, and presentation of dental and oral evidence which may come before the

This specialization is designed for practicing dentists who wish to gain experience in the professional field of forensic odontology, and for all professionals who are somehow related to the different areas of intervention of forensic odontology. They are professionals in the field of law, medicine, nursing, oral hygiene, and other areas that intervene in an interdisciplinary way. This specialization in the field of forensic odontology designed with a specified component for those professionals, will provide a technical-scientific training that allows them, within each professional area, to

SOFIA Virtual Summer Meeting (January 30, 2021) Gabriel M. Fonseca

ue to the pandemic that the world has been suffering for more than a year, all social and scientific activities have been modified or even canceled. In particular, something as simple (and desired) as boarding a plane and visiting colleagues from other countries, has suffered from successive postponements, taking our personal contacts to their most minimal expression. Previous experiences of virtuality, barely considered before the pandemic, renewed forces and were proposed as the only viable alternative to try to repair this communication. The words "Webinar", "Video Conference" or "Virtual Meeting" have passed into our daily lives and we can hardly reverse them, at least in the immediate near future.

colleagues and friends from other latitudes has been one of the great virtues of virtual platforms, approaching us through a webcam and a microphone. It seems insufficient, but we must recognize that they have made it possible to make up for those absences and even meet new people. The Sociedad de Odontoestomatólogos Forenses Iberoamericanos (SOFIA), bringing together more than 150 members from 18 countries throughout Latin America and Europe, had its last meeting in the city of Cusco (Peru) in September 2019, and like almost all the scientific associations, had to cancel its meeting scheduled for 2020. However, the deep alliance generated on that occasion with the Sociedad Peruana de Odontología Legal, Forense y Criminalística (SPOLFOC) allowed to reinvent that contact from virtuality. On January 30, 2021, the "Virtual Summer Meeting" managed by SOFIA with the patronage of SPOLFOC brought together almost a hundred members and colleagues who were able to share an intense morning of conferences and science.

However, and beyond the obvious consequences of this "new normal", virtual environments have made it possible to do something that was previously unthinkable: to routinely communicate to people from all over the world in a synchronous, agile and massive way. Being able to share not only knowledge but also smiles with

MEETING REPORT Newsletter of the INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION for FORENSIC ODONTO-STOMATOLOGY (IOFOS) Volume 43, Issue 1, June 2021 | www.iofos.eu

The Virtual Meeting (held through a well-known platform) began with a welcome from Dr. Gabriel M. Fonseca (Argentina, President of SOFIA), who presented his report on what was done on behalf of SOFIA during 2020, on the status of events past and future and upcoming challenges as a scientific society. SOFIA is a member of I.O.F.O.S., so he also communicated to the members of SOFIA about the status of that membership, of the new Board of I.O.F.O.S. (2020/2023) and the postponement of the Triennial I.O.F.O.S. Congress of Forensic Odontostomatology by COVID-19. After the presentation of the report, intense conversations were held with the representatives of each SOFIA member country about their particular and local circumstances due to COVID-19, renewing SOFIA's commitments to provide an appropriate response to the pandemic at all levels.

After this panel discussion, the first open lecture of the meeting took place. With the title "SPOLFOC: One year of International Conferences during Pandemic", the representative of Peru in SOFIA and member of SPOLFOC, Dr. Wendy Velezmoro Montes (Fig. 1) presented an approach to the 82 conferences in forensic odontostomatology managed during 2020 by SPOLFOC. These conferences were sponsored by SOFIA, with a total of 7,593 attendees and the participation of speakers from 17 countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Although mostly in Spanish, the lectures were also given in English, Portuguese and Italian. With her sympathy and leadership, Dr. Velezmoro Montes emphasized that with resilience and adaptation great successes can be achieved, beyond the health contingency. The second conference was given by Dr. Stella Martín de las Heras (Fig. 2), professor at the University of Granada (Spain) and a highly recognized member of SOFIA. With the title "Reflections on Forensic Odontology", Dr. Martín de las Heras addressed different topics of the specialty with a deep and critical view, relying on new scientific advances and demands towards forensic odontostomatology. Also, the Spanish academic emphasized the problem of violence against women and the necessary participation of forensic odontologists in the identification and reporting of oral lesions in these cases.

its members from all over the world, and contributed to promoting the dissemination of knowledge and updating of forensic odontostomatology. Maybe 2021 will allow us to get closer again ... or not.

However, we undoubtedly need communication and permanent contact to continue supporting our nature as social beings.

Course on forensic odontology and DVI in Belgium, (January – May 2021) Eddy De Valck Past President of IOFOS and VVTE Eddy.De.Valck@telenet.be

O

n 20th May 2021, 13 odontologists from Belgium, The Netherlands and Spain received their certificate after taking the exam from the course on forensic odontology and DVI. The course started in January 2021 and ran over a period of five months, one day per month, at the headquarters of the Belgian Federal Police in Brussels. Despite Covid 19 restrictions we were able to organize this event in a very safe way in the main auditorium of the Belgian Federal Police. Some of the classes were given by Teams Meeting.

In each of the stages the organizational aspects were highlighted in great detail by Chief Commander Christian Decobecq, head DVI Belgium, followed by a clear and extensive presentation by Eddy De Valck, Chief forensic Odontologist DVI Belgium on the role of the forensic odontologist in each of the different stages.

The program was built up in such way that the participants, some of which already had previous experience and training in forensic odontology and DVI , others not at all, were instructed extensively on the elements of forensic odontology such as identification, bite mark analysis, dental age estimation, child abuse, DNA and new techniques as a base for the participation of the forensic odontologist in DVI.

All subspecialties that have a role in the identification process were also invited to give a presentation on their specialty so that participants would understand the full picture of a DVI procedure. We had contributions by a magistrate, forensic pathologist, DNA specialist, Family liaison officer, anthropologist

In the DVI component of the program the participants learned the base of the Interpol DVI philosophy and protocols, and they were gradually taken through the different stages of the DVI process.

and someone of the Missing Persons Branch of the Belgian Federal Police. Also the DVI System International software was introduced by a DVI team member. This way the participants received a complete overview of all specialisms involved in DVI during an operation. Of course all information given was based on the philosophy and protocols as developed by the Interpol DVI Standing Committee.

Interpol 600-700 forms, a small mass disaster identification followed by a multiple choice test covering the full content of the course. Also a certificate of participation was handed out to all participants, who also received a ‘forensic odontologist’ polo shirt from DVI team Belgium. As the participants came from both parts ( Dutch and French speaking parts) of the country, the Netherlands and Spain the lectures were made in lecturer’s mother tongue while the slides on the screen and the syllabus were in English. Most of them were very happy to receive on the last day their copy of the new IOFOS textbook on Forensic Odontology which they can use as reference.

As the course went on we were happy to notice how the participants became more involved with the whole DVI process but also and especially how the group started to develop as a real team. This was most noticeable on the last day which was mainly about practicalities such as a transcription exercise of dental AM and PM records onto the
