president’s report
2012 has proven to be another year of success for the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. This success is due to our committed staff, fabulous volunteers and supportive Chamber members. It has been my pleasure to work with dedicated Board of Directors, who have given their time and expertise to help the Chamber reach their goals and fulfill our mission. One of our goals this year was to enhance our proactive efforts for the tourism industry, which brings more dollars to our community and businesses. With the generous donation of downtown space from Brown M. Maloney, the Visitor Information Center added a second location downtown during the summer months providing information to hundreds of visitors. A Tourism Committee also was formed, which works closely with Barbara Hanna from the City of Sequim. Stay tuned for an exciting event that is being planned for 2014! Another goal was to reach out to our membership with benefits of being a Sequim Chamber member. Our Board of Directors personally delivered several membership plaques explaining the many benefits of being a member. We have enjoyed meeting and educating our members all year long. I encourage members to get involved in some way with the Chamber activities, whether it is attending a luncheon or after-hours event to network with other business owners, sponsoring a luncheon or other Chamber event, joining a committee, or one of the many other opportunities that will make a positive impact for you, your business and the community. Serving as President for the past two years of the Sequim Chamber has truly been a wonderful experience and growth opportunity for my professional development. I am pleased to introduce Phil Castell from Castell Insurance as the incoming President for 2013. Phil already has proven his commitment to Sequim and I am confident his enthusiasm and passion will lead the Chamber to continued success and support. Thank you for the privilege of serving our community. Working together does make a difference. Serving as Executive Director of the SequimDungeness Valley Chamber is a very robust yet rewarding position! I feel incredibly honored to represent the Sequim Chamber and our wonderful community. It is with much sincere appreciation I thank the Chamber Board, our awesome members, devoted staff and bighearted volunteers for their dedication of time and energy and support to the Chamber in 2012. As we enter the new year, we welcome two new board members: Mark Couhig of the Sequim Gazette and Joshua Fox of Platt Irwin. We also say goodbye to a few incredibly devoted individuals. Heartfelt appreciation goes to our outgoing board — members: Bill Littlejohn, LizBeth Harper and Bill Thomas – their contributions were many. We are so fortunate to live in a community with endearing, devoted and compassionate members. Thank you; we couldn’t do it without you! As we continue to face a challenging economic
environment, we are all attempting to do more with fewer resources. This requires business owners to become more creative in how they run their business and forces them to look closely at every dollar spent. Despite that, I am proud to say we added 52 new members in 2012, taking our membership to 446. It is this Chamber’s mission to advance and promote business by providing a forum to address issues and to unite and support our membership and community through programs, events and services. This year we’ve done just that by working together through challenging times and situations, cultivating a very cohesive and strong bond through our committees and projects; an example being the recent Hometown Holiday events and Shopping Local focus in December. The Sequim Merchants Group banded together and worked hard to beautify our downtown for the holidays, once again creating a tree-lighting ceremony and events related to Santa’s arrival, as well as combining donations for three gift basket giveaways! The 6th annual Business 2 Business Expo was yet again a resounding success thanks to the support of our event sponsors, vendors, attendees and the Chamber board volunteers and staff. This expo provides a unique forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable local resources. The Shiso City Sister City visit in 2012 proved to be a wonderful experience for the host families and students. After last year’s absence from sending any student ambassadors to Shiso, Japan, because of the earthquake that hit the island, Sequim has renewed the program by receiving 14 Student Ambassadors and three chaperones from Shiso City. Mayor Ken Hays welcomed representatives from the Shiso Board of Education and the Japanese Student Exchange Group on Sept. 21. Sequim sent eight students

and one chaperone in early November. The students raised more than $3,000 to offset their expenses for the trip. Student recruitment is already under way to recruit eighth- and ninthgraders for 2013’s exchange program. And to round out the year, the Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again with its 28th annual performance during the Christmas holidays. The Chamber continued its marketing efforts through social media, providing onestop information on the Chamber website and Facebook pages. The new Chamber website has proved to be an excellent tool in providing faster search abilities, a calendar of events feature and a blog with links to current information and additional websites. Stay tuned for a new mobile site in 2013! I also would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the 2012 Irrigation Festival Royalt y Cour t — Pr incesses Amanda Dronenburg, Ariana F lores and Natalie Stevenson for their dedication and service to the festival, the Chamber and the entire community through the year. This court served with poise and professionalism as wonderful ambassadors for Sequim while attending parades and events throughout Western Washington. In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2012, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas and opportunities to launch. Citizen of the Year Award The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to announce Dick Hughes as the 2011 Citizen of the Year. Hughes was nominated for his involvement and talents benefiting many community programs including the Sequim Education Foundation, Sequim Wolf Pack Youth Football, Sequim Middle School and High School Interact Clubs, Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic and Sequim Noon Rotary Club. 2011 Community Service Awards were presented to Dr. Cynthia Martin and Donna Tidrick with special thanks for their outstanding dedication to our community: A committee of previous recipients selected the top three finalists from a pool of Sequim citizens nominated by members of the community. Finalists are chosen Dick Hughes based on their history of outstanding volunteer service to the Sequim community. The Chamber and its members and family of the honorees honored Hughes, Martin and Tidrick at its annual Citizen of the Year Luncheon on Feb. 28, 2012, at the Sunland Country Club. Annually, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for and determines the Citizen of the Year under the following criteria: • Nominees shall be residents of Eastern Clallam County (primarily Sequim School District area.) • Nominees shall be persons who have performed outstanding service to the community. • Service rendered by nominees shall be above, beyond and Cynthia Martin generally outside the regular occupation of the nominee. • Two persons working jointly in a community project or projects may be nominated to receive a joint award. Groups of more than two will not be considered. Persons making nominations should bear in mind the foregoing guidelines, Donna Tidrick while fully understanding that the selection tribunal must, of necessity be the final authority. The annual standing deadline for nominations is Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. and applications are available at the Chamber office at 1192 E. Washington St. The Sequim Citizen of the Year 2012 will be announced on Feb. 26 at the Chamber’s luncheon to be held at Sunland.

The Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year. Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends. May 2012 hosted the 117th Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim — “117 & Still Growin’ Green.” As the longest continuous festival in Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community. May 2013 will host the 118th
Irrigation Festival with the theme of “Dancing Through the Valley.” As a Chamber-sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities! Lavender Weekend, produced by the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the Sequim area and has earned Sequim the official designation as “The Lavender Capital of North America.” Each and every July, more than 30,000 people visit the lavender farms on tour as well as participate in the multitude of events taking place during that third weekend of July. From street fairs to car, driftwood and quilt shows, art tours, advice from gardening personality Ciscoe Morris and free musical entertainment on every corner, there were festival activities for every
member of the family to enjoy. Nowhere else in this part of the world offers these events and rural attractions during the third weekend July weekend. Several Chamber members participate in the farm tours and activities, and the Visitor Information Center is especially busy during July. The Chamber staff and volunteers contribute substantial time and energy to assisting visitors, selling festival farm entry buttons and commemorative posters, answering questions, giving directions and doing their best to make each and every visitor feel very welcomed in our unique community.

Meeting Date: As needed The Sixth Annual Business 2 Business Expo was a tremendous success! See page 15 for more complete information.
Co-Chairs: Linda Barnfather, Bill Thomas and Barbara Hanna (City of Sequim) Meeting date: Third Tuesday of the month at 11 a.m. With the slowdown of the state’s economy, we’ve witnessed a real effort for some businesses to maintain their steady stream of incomes. From a tourism perspective, the upside of this has been the focus on stay-vacations or localized/regional tourism. As part of the Tourism Committee, that was formed out of our Chamber’s director retreat in January, the Tourism group is focusing on what we can do locally to keep those vital visitors coming to the Olympic Peninsula, namely the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. In May, we held a forum called “A Day in Sequim.” We featured the city of Sequim’s Communication Director, Barbara Hanna, local businessman Bill Thomas and board member Linda Barnfather. The main presentation featured “Branding an Image” and used the City of Sequim’s recent city logo upgrade as an example. Hanna led a great discussion on how complex it is to highlight a city’s icons and image, then compact this information down to an appealing graphic image. Thomas led an interactive discussion on customer service and the significance going one step further, in our competitive economic climate. Barnfather gave an audio/visual presentation on the highlights and assets of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, reiterating why we live here and the importance of conveying our pride and helpfulness to our visitors. The presentation has been used for volunteer training at the Visitor Information Center. Moving forward, the Tourism Committee is meeting on a regular basis to develop an exciting addition to why people want to come and stay in Sequim. We have some great minds working on this project and we hope you will stay tuned for more information. Plus, we would love for all of you to be involved in tourism and promotion of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.
Merchants Group: Co-chairs Lizbeth Harper and Vickie Oen The Sequim Merchants Group meets monthly on the third Wednesday of the month at Sunshine Cafe at 5:30 p.m. The Merchants Group had a very productive past year. Attendance improved due to increased communication with e-mails, leaflets and telephone calls. The group adopted a committee structure with several merchants and Chamber board members working together to complete tasks on different projects. Among the many projects the group accomplished were the following: • An improved third annual Merchant Fair that moved to the middle of Washington Street; provided outreach to include merchants who were not necessarily in the downtown core and arranged for the presence of the Irrigation float and Irrigation royalty for photos. • An increased presence in Lavender Weekend with a decorated downtown bus stop; the use of the lot at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street for music and refreshments and a livelier downtown with most stores staying open late during the weekend. • An enhanced plan for the upcoming holidays with a new strategy for the gift basket; most stores willing to participate in an open house planned for First Friday and an opportunity for people to donate to the food bank during the festivities. • The completion and distribution of the Fun Map, a joint project with the Merchants Group and the City of Sequim. • The purchase of the second set of seasonal flags to be hung in the spring in the downtown core. • Involvement in a downtown focus group with members of the Merchants Group working with Barbara Hanna to plan new streetscaping and signage for the core downtown area. • Increased number of stores open for First Friday making the downtown core alive and fun on the first Friday of each month.
Membership Committee: Chair – Phil Castell Members: Bill Littlejohn and Carol Pope Meetings: Tuesday proceeding board meeting (2nd Thursday) at 3 p.m. What a fun year 2012 has been with membership at the Chamber. After our annual retreat where goals were set, then came the work of implementing tools to help us reach those goals. Historically the Chamber membership has been between 440 and 460 members and so an ambitious goal was made to grow the membership to 500, an increase of over 10 percent. To make this goal visual as well as fun it was decided that we would call this goal the “Sequim 500” like the car race’s the Indy 500 and Daytona 500. Chamber staff created a very nice chart depicting a race track with paper cars assigned to each board member, so we could show the progress we made toward the goal. To assist in the goal of 500 members, emphasis was devoted to two different areas. First was to retain existing members, as an existing member, and secondly to attract new members. To those goals all board members did an admirable job. We gained new members at a decent pace but likewise lost members at a similar pace. By conducting reviews of why we lost members it was evident that the majority of losses were due to business closings and the majority of new members were due to new businesses opening. While it would be easy to point blame at the economy we also had a number of members who retired and to them we wish them all the best and a long and happy retirement. In closing, I consider the year to be a success, as we have gained some fantastic and enthusiastic new members. In addition I believe all the board members had a great time meeting new members and being a visible part of the community we all love so much.
Finance and Fundraising Committee: Chair – Joe Borden Fundraising members: Shawnna Rigg, Stephanie Sweet and Shelli Robb-Kahler Meetings: Second Wednesday of each month The Finance Committee is responsible for the budget for the Chamber and Visitor Information Center. Each year the Executive Committee completes a review of the revenues and expenditures, including a determination of cost allocation for those expenses incurred as part of the operation of the VIC. The Fundraising Committee developed new events and programs to benefit the Chamber and provides support for its ongoing operations in 2012; including themed dances and the development of a commemorative brick wall that is still in progress. Interested Chamber members or individuals are welcome to join the committee and help us plan for 2013 and beyond.
Visitor Information Center Property Management: Chair – Scott Clausen Meeting date: As needed This year has been a somewhat quiet one for the Visitor Information Center. We seem to be recovering from the economic issues of the country and are, once again, seeing more visitors to our beautiful town and valley. With our computers stabilized we finally replaced our copier. It was on its last leg and needed to go. We also had a reorganization of our racks which have made things a bit more accessible for our visitors. We really needed to paint the building and began that process. Due to the wet weather we have put the remainder of the project on hold until the dry weather returns. We conducted a general walk around of the facility and developed a list of work to be done in the coming year. We’re always looking for volunteers to help with our work crew. If you would like to help or offer suggestions, contact myself or the staff and we’ll see what we can do. A big shout out goes to all the volunteers at the VIC! We frequently receive many positive comments on their service to visitors. They are the main reason we are successful. On a sad note we said goodbye to Lynn Elliot as she moved from the area. On the plus side we gained a bright energetic face in the hiring of Stefanie Rotmark to fill the position. I would be remiss if I didn’t

give kudos to those who stepped up in the past year. Marty Kahler, Joe Borden, Ron Smith and Bill Littlejohn have gone above and beyond. Derrick at Pacific Office Equipment was instrumental in getting us a copier we could afford and still complete our work. Thanks to you all and to those I might have forgotten. We look forward to a great 2013.

Shiso Sister City Committee Chair: Pete Tjemsland Appointee to Chamber Board: Ron Farquhar The Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association meets the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. from January-June and September-December in the Clallam Transit meeting room. The purpose of this committee is to support and strengthen the relationship between Sequim’s Sister City, Shiso, Japan, and the community of Sequim. This is done by hosting the annual educational exchange of ninthgrade students from Shiso, Japan, and ninth-grade students from Sequim schools. The association works diligently to maintain the Sequim-Shiso Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park and supports the City of Sequim when hosting dignitaries and citizens who visit from Shiso, Japan. After last year’s absence from sending any student ambassadors to Shiso, Japan, because of the earthquake that hit the island, Sequim has renewed the program by receiving 14 student ambassadors and three chaperones from Shiso City in late October. Sequim sent eight students and one chaperone in early November. The students raised over $3,000 to offset their expenses in 2012. Gail Sumpter is heading up the exchange program and already has started recruiting eighthand ninth-graders for 2013’s exchange program.

Phil Castell, President Castell Insurance In the mid-1990s while living in the Seattle area, Phil began a search for a place less crowded where he could continue to grow his business in an enjoyable environment with friendly people. Needless to say Sequim won the search hands down. He found the only thing more amazing than the people he met was the wonderful effect of the rain shadow. Driving home from Sequim in brilliant sunshine to the typical Seattle weather was the clinching factor. Phil attributes the friendliness of the people to the fact that the vast majority of people in Sequim were newcomers themselves at some point and they go out of their way to make new residents feel welcome. Phil said that every member of the community is a voice for the Chamber of Commerce in extolling the virtues of the area and doing business here. He feels privileged to serve as a board member.
Christy Rookard, Past President First Federal The past four years serving on the Sequim Dungeness-Valley Chamber of Commerce Board has been an invaluable experience. Having been born and raised in Sequim, serving in this capacity has been an opportunity to give back to the community that I love. After graduating from Sequim High School and attending Western Washington University, I returned to Sequim to marry my wonderful husband, Willy, and start a family. I have two beautiful daughters, Bailey and Alexis. Bailey is attending Peninsula College to earn a medical assistant degree and Alexis is a junior at SHS. Earlier this year, I celebrated 21 years of employment at First Federal. In my role as branch manager, I enjoy the relationships I have with my customers the most. With my career in the banking industry and personal family business experience, along with being a native of Sequim, I have the background to make a positive contribution to the Chamber board.
Scott Clausen, Secretary/Treasurer Peninsula Mailing Scott Clausen was raised in Iowa and Minnesota. After a career in military service he spent time in the education and private sectors. The Clausens fell in love with Sequim with their first visit and moved to this area in 2003. In 2005, they opened Peninsula Mailing and celebrate six years of operations in December. Scott continues to enjoy Sequim and believes our community is the best in Washington.

Jason Stanek, Co-Chair Finance/Fundraising Jason was raised in the Twin Cities of Minnesota and received his bachelor’s degree in business at University Wisconsin-Stout. Jason has worked in the insurance industry coming up on seven years this April and with American Family Insurance for four of those years. Jason and his wife fell in love with the Olympic Peninsula and chose Sequim to open the Jason Stanek Agency in March 2012. Jason has been married to his beautiful wife Karly for four years and were expecting their first child in January.
Liz Parks, Co-Chair Finance/Fundraising Liz grew up in Jamaica, West Indies, and came to the United States with her family in 1970 to Miami, Fla. Liz became a proud U.S. citizen in 1976. Liz met her husband Richard in Seattle and they have been married for over 28 years. They have two children, Matthew, 26, and Katrina, 23. Liz moved from Miami to Sequim in 2001 for quality of life. She has been in real estate for 10 years and in April 2010 Richard and Liz bought the RE/MAX franchise in Sequim. Liz has served on the Sequim Sunrise Rotary board and also served for four years on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula.
Joe Borden, Membership Chair Individual Member When Joe Borden retired from Carquest, he chose to devote more time to his Chamber and Irrigation Festival activities. Borden is twice retired, having served 22 years in the Army, and is a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and his wife, Tawana, moved to Sequim in 1986 to raise their two children, Chuck and Tawni. Six-time Irrigation Festival chairman, Borden has worked with the Chamber board for as many years and has worked with the Irrigation Festival for more than 14 years. He also is an instructor for the AARP Defense Driving Course and a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders who attend services for our fallen heroes.
Vickie Oen, Director Purple Haze Lavender Having been born and raised in this wonderful small town, I enjoy being a true native Sequimite. The combination of great childhood memories and the special benefits that a small community offers are why my husband and I chose to stay and raise our two, now teenage girls, in the beautiful Sequim valley. Being a small business owner of Race Street Auto Parts with my husband and working as the general manager for Purple Haze Lavender Farm for the past 10 years have given me a firsthand look at the challenges that face a small farm and a retail business in the Sequim community. I hope to bring to the Chamber board an enthusiasm for all of Sequim and the great community that it is, but my particular hope is to work with my fellow small business owners to continue to create a vibrant downtown Sequim retail area that is not only a great place to visit, but a great place to stay and shop! Linda Barnfather Individual Member, Director As a native of Washington, Linda knows the issues that our state and communities are facing. She currently works as an Executive Legislative Assistant to state House Majority Whip Rep. Kevin Van De Wege. During her employment with Van De Wege, she simultaneously served former House Majority Leader Lynn Kessler, for the last nine months of her term. Prior to Linda’s work in the public sector, she successfully managed properties in the greater Sequim area. Additionally, Linda has worked with local land issues on a personal and professional level. Linda and her husband are small business owners of Barnfather Properties. Linda is a graduate of Washington State University in liberal arts. In addition, she attended London University on an exchange program in Liberal Arts and Cultures. Linda also holds a certificate in Non-Fiction Writing from the University of Washington. Linda serves locally on the board of directors of the Olympic Peninsula Visitors Bureau and the board of directors for the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. She is a member of the Clallam Economic Development Council and League of Women Voters, and volunteers at the Port Townsend Film Festival.
Theresa Rubens
Theresa Rubens is a native of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and the thirdgeneration member of her family. She graduated from Sequim High School in 1979 and pursued a 25-year career in the family business of Restaurant Hospitality & Tourism on the Olympic Peninsula. She loves living in Sequim and enjoys talking to whomever will listen about the benefits of living in a small town! She now owns and operates her own small business and her husband is the general contractor of their construction company. Solar City recently celebrated its 11th anniversary in the downtown core. “I hope to bring to the Chamber of Commerce board a voice in which small-town life can be enriched so businesses can grow and prosper within the integrity of what Sequim is to so many of us, a gift. I would like to continue to encourage people to shop locally and with their local merchants, who work so hard to remain a vibrant retail core.”
Michele Sorrentino
Michele moved to Sequim 23 years ago from California where she and her husband, John, owned a small garment factory. Michele has lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Spokane and finds Sequim to be one of the most beautiful and friendly places to live. Michele currently holds the position of assistant vice president and regional team leader at Sound Community Bank in the Sequim office. She has been in banking for 31 years and with Sound Community for 15 of those years. She has participated in the Irrigation Festival, Boys & Girls Club, Paint the Town, Relay for Life, Northwest Harvest, Oktoberfest , Lavender Festival and numerous golf tournament fundraisers. “I care about our community and feel it is a privilege to have an opportunity to assist the Sequim Chamber in serving our community.”

Joshua Fox
Joshua was born in Grand Island, Neb., and received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2005 and a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School — Litigation Concentration and Phi Delta Phi in 2008. Upon graduation from law school, he and his family moved to Omaha, Neb., where Josh began his legal career representing clients in Iowa and Nebraska in various civil litigation, real estate and insurance law matters. In 2011, due to their love of the outdoors, Joshua and his family moved to the Pacific Northwest and Josh joined Platt Irwin as an associate attorney. He is an active member of the community, currently serving as a board member of the North Olympic Land Trust and member of the United Way of Clallam County. Joshua is a member of the Washington State Bar Association; Nebraska State Bar Association and United States District Court for the District of Nebraska.
Deon Kapetan, Irrigation Festival Appointee to the Board Deon Kapetan is the Peninsula lending team manager with Sound Community Bank. Deon and her husband, Kevin, moved to Sequim in 1990 and have been very active in the community and with the Irrigation Festival for many years. She has been involved with the planning of the festival since 2000, including co-chairing and then chairing the Crazy Daze Breakfast from 2000-2006 and then in 2007 she became the chair of the Float Display committee, Their two children, CJ and Hailey, have been involved in the festival from an early age as well. She is excited about her new role as festival chairman and sees lots of new ideas, committee members and opportunities happening over the course of the next year. “We are adapting to the needs of a fast growing festival by developing teams to better facilitate the festival.”
Ron Farquhar, Shiso-Sequim Sister City Appointee to the Board
Ron Farquhar was born and raised in Compton, Calif., graduated from Brooks Art Institute of Santa Barbara, with a bachelor’s of professional arts degree. After serving with the U.S. Army, Farquhar operated his own photo studio in La Habra, Calif. In 1970, he entered the JC Penney management program and served with the JC Penney Company for 33 years with his last eight years of service here in Sequim. He and his wife of 44 years, Carol, retired in 2003. He served as a Sequim City Council member for six years and served as president of the Rotary Club of Sequim in 2005-2006. Farquhar is actively involved as a civil service police commissioner and chairman with the Shiso-Sequim Sister City program and serves as their appointee to the Chamber board.

Flower baskets! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim flower basket! Each year, Chamber board member Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the City of Sequim to create more than 100 flower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim. The agriculture class selects the flower theme, buys the seeds and starter plants, and prepares the baskets. The city crews install the baskets and then water and fertilize the baskets until nature dictates their removal. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these prolific blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork! The proceeds from the sponsors also fund the annual holiday lights that magically appear each year at the Bank of America Park at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. This magical corner plays host to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Irrigation Festival Royalty elves each year along with the musical talent of the Sequim City Band. In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area. The Chamber extends it’s sincere appreciation to all flower basket sponsors and their support for the program which significantly contributes to maintaining the hometown atmosphere we enjoy!

Shelli Robb-Kahler – Executive Director
Shelli is a true “Sequimite,” born and raised in Sequim where she has lived her entire live despite the few years she spent in Seattle. There she attended school and took on a job that would be the beginning of her 30-year career in banking. Shelli joined the Chamber as Executive Director in April 2011 and is fortunate to work with an awesome Board of Directors who are passionate about their business community and devoted to its success. She thoroughly enjoys being active in all of the many aspects of Chamber involvement. Shelli enjoys the vast variety her job entails as well as working closely with business owners and organizations throughout the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Shelli states, “Representing the Sequim Chamber and the community is a dynamic task; however, it is a privilege and an honor to do so!” Shelli is married to her husband, Marty, and has two sons, Brady Robb and Colin Kahler.
Jeri Smith – Office Administrator
Jeri Smith is a North Olympic Peninsula native who graduated from Sequim High School in 1967 and attended Peninsula College. She has been with the Chamber since 1999 and provides bookkeeping services and membership services for the Chamber. Smith also supervises and supports the Visitor Information Center volunteers and maintains the mountain of statistical information needed for our tourism-related reports. She served as the 2009 Irrigation Festival Grand Marshal and continues to provide ongoing support for the Chamber’s festivals and events.
Stefanie Rotmark – Administrative Assistant
Stefanie Rotmark serves as administrative assistant to the Executive Director and is responsible for the maintenance of the visitor information publications and responds to the multitude and variety of calls and e-mails that are received at the Chamber each day. She also serves as the website and social media marketer, spreading the word about events and news for Chamber members. Rotmark is a newcomer to the peninsula, having moved here in the summer of 2011. Sequim Irrigation Festival
The Irrigation Festival started as a celebration of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the valley. It was as much a commemoration of the ditches as it was of the community that made it happen. Ever since that first picnic in 1896, the Sequim Irrigation Festival has been a celebration of, for and about this wonderful community in which we live. The Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuously running festival in Washington, spans two weekends in early May and most of the events are free to the community and our visitors. Our festival has grown over the past few years and it is all due to the generosity of the businesses and individuals of the Sequim/Port Angeles area. While the Irrigation Festival is a community festival that is overseen by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, it receives no funding from the Chamber. The festival is fully self-supporting and relies on sponsorships, donations (both monetary and in-kind), fundraising and the many volunteers who help the festival to make it successful. The 2012 Sequim Irrigation Festival theme was “117 & Still Growin’ Green.” The 2012 logo was created by logo design contest winner Laura Friedkin. Melody Workman, a fifth-grader in Sue Park’s class at Helen Haller Elementary School, created the winning festival button design during a contest open to all elementary students. Our Royal Court Princesses Amanda Dronenburg, Natalie Stevenson and Arianna Flores represented the Irrigation Festival

and the city of Sequim in parades, civic events and festivals throughout the year with professionalism, dedication and high spirits. They made appearances around town to represent the Irrigation Festival, traveled with the float around Western Washington to other community parades and also performed community service in the area. Preparations are now being made for the 118th Sequim Irrigation Festival. The theme “Dancing Through the Valley” will be used throughout the festival. The 2013 logo was again created by logo design contest winner Laura Friedkin. In addition to the logo design contest, a contest for the festival button is being held. The festival button design contest is open to the elementary school students. The winner of the button design contest is Naishia Madail. The festival buttons will then be sold by the fifth-graders from the Sequim School District in late March. The Festival Board is pleased to report that the Grand Marshal for the 118th Irrigation Festival will be Elaine Grinnell. The Sequim Pioneer Association has just selected the Grand and Honorary Pioneers and they are as follows: Grand Pioneers – Dr. Neil Cays and Esther Heuhslein Nelson. Honorary Pioneers: R.F. Harry Schlaffman and Nancy Jarmuth Smith. Planning and building for the 2013 Irrigation Festival already has started. The building of the new float to represent the theme began after the last parade in October and will be ready for the first parade in mid-April. Additionally, the search for the 2013 royal court began in November

At the end of March, the Kick Off Dinner and Auction will be held as a fundraiser for the festival, where donated items and the festival pins are auctioned.

For the sixth year in a row, the Business 2 Business Expo was a resounding success! More than 40 local businesses and restaurants participated in October 2012. The evening was a fun-filled event, with many vendors providing games and prizes. A keynote speaking opportunity was added in 2012 and Jennifer Clark, the local regional advocate for the Small Business Association Office of Advocacy, was well received by the audience. This annual event highlights the abundance and quality of our local businesses and many great connections always are made during the evening’s event. Chamber’s Financial Picture The Chamber Board of Directors adopts an annual budget to provide for the most efficient and productive use of revenues received by the Chamber throughout the year. The board then monitors Chamber revenues and expenditures through a variety of reports provided at each monthly meeting of the Board. The Chamber’s fiscal year is based on the calendar year beginning Jan. 1-Dec. 31. The Chamber ended the 2012 budget year with an estimated net profit of $3,500. The Chamber is in good financial standing with sufficient reserves and fundraising goals established for 2013. As indicated in past years, it is important to note that the Chamber’s annual budget provides for separate accounting for the following activities: Chamber member services, Visitor Information Center operations, Irrigation Festival, Shiso City Sister Program, Flower Basket/Retail Trade, Howard Wood Memorial Scholarship fund and the Sequim Community Choir. Sequim Visitor Information Center The Chamber staff and volunteers operate the Visitor Information Center (VIC) seven days a week with closures scheduled only for major family holidays. Approximately 90 percent of the Chamber’s building is allocated to the operations of the VIC. While some of our visitors arrive at the VIC at some point during their stay in Sequim, many others may not be staying in Sequim but merely passing through to Port Angeles or Hurricane Ridge, heading to Forks to experience the “Twilight” phenomenon, the West End, heading toward Seattle or exploring our area during their stay elsewhere on the peninsula. Others still are trying to decide where to stay, how long they should stay and what to do while they are here. And that’s where our staff and volunteers can help! In addition to providing staff support for telephone calls, travel planner mailing and e-mail responses, the Chamber staff and volunteers provide information at the VIC to encourage visitors to: 1. The toll-free 800 number affords interested parties the opportunity to call the Chamber, speak to a staff member or volunteer and have specific questions answered or needs fulfilled. On their arrival in Sequim, visitors to the VIC
are pleased to find: • A facility that is clean and inviting, visible and accessible • Happy greeters who are trained and knowledgeable • Resources and information: visitor guides, travel planners, rack cards • Clean and stocked restrooms • Access to the Internet Chamber staff coordinates the scheduling of 65 volunteers who contribute nearly 6,000 hours each year and serve nearly 25,000 visitors annually. Visitors arrive from all 50 states and countries from around the world including Brazil, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Lithuania, Israel, Wales and Thailand to name just a few!
Esther Nelson started volunteering for the Chamber more than 20 years ago and, in addition to continuously updating the extensive resource materials for the volunteers, she provides valuable training f o r e a c h a n d e ve r y volunteer. Esther brings a wealth of professional experience and knowledge of local history to the Chamber. A native of Agnew, Esther graduated from Sequim High School in 1946 and worked for the State Employment Security Department for 32 years. She will be a Grand Pioneer during the 118th Irrigation Festival celebrated in May.
