Tips on Traveling to Forks By air: SeaTac International Airport south of Seattle is the main jet airline hub for western Washington. It takes about 4 hours to drive to Forks from SeaTac, with the car ferry to Bainbridge Island or Bremerton a short cut. Kenmore Air commuter flights from SeaTac also land at Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles. By Car: From the south, Aberdeen is about 100 miles south along Highway 101.

The drive north follows the coast, with fantastically beautiful Ruby Beach, and the Kalaloch Lodge good stops on the way. From the north, get off the I-5 freeway and take the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, following state highways up to Highway 101, which runs through the lavender fields of Sequim and historic Port Angeles (which is another “Twilight” location).

A Twilighter’s Intro to Forks Author Stephenie Meyer discovered Forks and nearby West End towns and settings during an Internet search she made while writing the first book in her “Twilight” series. She sought a rainy, misty, foggy place as the backdrop to her story of Edward, a handsome Forks High School boy whose family happen to be vampires, and his classmate and girlfriend, Bella. Stephenie traveled with her sister Emily to Forks in 2004 after she began writing “Twilight.” In the Forks’ section of her Web site [stepheniemeyer. com] she says she was afraid the actual town would be a disappointment. Instead, she writes, “Being in Forks was the most incredible experience... it was eerily similar to my imaginings. Walking down Main Street, shopping at the Thriftway (I still have that receipt!), driving

up side streets until we found a house that could have been Charlie’s, and then turning the car around only to find a beat-up, once-red, early-fifties Chevy truck parked across the road… The word surreal gets overused a lot, but this really was like walking around inside of a dream.” As the popularity of Stephenie’s book grew following its release in October, 2005, avid fans of Stephenie’s began making regular visits to Forks, surprising local residents and businesses in the logging town with their knowledge of the area, and their love of “Twilight,” the book’s characters and of its setting. Unlike the imaginary characters conjured up in Stephenie’s imagination, Forks High School, Forks City Hall, ThriftwayForks Outfitters, LaPush, First Beach, Forks Library and other locales in “Twilight” are real

places, with “Twilight” adding a magic touch to the rural logging town. Visitors delight in completing their “pilgrimage” to Forks and the West End, finding a wide range of accommodations and unique souvenirs to take home, and a warm welcome. Forks is the wettest town in all the lower 48 states, and a “Twilight” visitor will likely get to experience the misty beauty of the rainforest atmosphere of Forks, and the mysterious, dramatic Pacific Coast at LaPush. While enjoying their “Twilight” time in Forks, visitors will also find great day-hikes on the coast and in the Olympic National Park, fine restaurants that feature locally-caught Pacific seafoods, a timber museum and a wealth of “Twilight” lore and information available at the Forks Chamber of Commerce.

The Twilight Movies Forks & LaPush

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT PHOTOS Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan in a scene from the Twilight Saga film Breaking Dawn, set for release on November 18 in the U.S. CHRIS COOK FORKS FORUM PHOTOS “Twilight” film director Catherine Hardwicke (left) walks out a scene at First Beach in LaPush during a scouting trip made in January 2008. The photo represents the closest Forks or LaPush came to actually being used for locations in the Twilight Saga films. The moviemaker was unable to return to LaPush, or Forks, to film scenes. No actual footage of Forks or LaPush appears in the film. Forks High School was replicated at Kalama High School, four hours to the south. The bulk of exterior filming took place at locations in Oregon. Mockups of the Forks welcome sign and the Spartan sign on Spartan Avenue were replicated for the film.

For “New Moon” filming, Summit Entertainment chose Vancouver, B.C. and Vancouver Island. The “New Moon” prop department was supplied with dozens of photos of Forks and LaPush by the Forks Forum. A gift of signed “Twilight” star photos (top right) and a note stating the photos were used frequently by the prop department arrived following British Columbia filming. Requests for use releases for many local business signs and organization logos were also sent.

Twilight-themed Dining Adds to Twilight Touring Fun Restaurants, drive-ins and sandwich shops in Forks have had fun creating Twilight-themed dishes. Along with the fun food you’ll find Twilight fan guest books, Twilight related photos of local scenes hung on walls and in some cases a Twilight souvenir accompanying your food. Sully’s Drive-In, a Forks tradition dating back over 50 years, offers its famous Bella Burger. South North Gardens Chinese Restaurant has hosted many Twilight celebrities over the past five years. The restaurant’s menu features specially made Twilight seafood dishes, and Twilight Special Dinners. The Forks Coffee Shop welcomes Twilight fans; Jacob’s Blackberry Cobbler is served, as well as a Twilight burger. The black berry season is just about at its peak this weekend, too. The Forks Subway (located at the Union 76 gas station on the north end of Forks) offers a unique Subway sub – The “Twilight.”

Cutting Bella’s Birthday Cake Cutting Bella’s Birthday Cake is always a highlight of the Bella’s Birthday/Stephenie Meyer Day Celebration. Here fans gather round the cake at the 2009 event. This year individual cup cakes are being added to the party.

Come visit Forks Open Aire Market during Stephenie Meyer Days Saturday September 10th by the Transit Station

We are all local vendors with a variety of items from dolls and games to jewelry and candles, locally grown produce in season, and homebaked goods that day. The Forks Open Aire Market is the real Forks, and is an example of the “Stay for Forks” theme of Stephenie Meyer Day.

Twilight fans will find shops in Forks and LaPush offer unique souvenirs and gifts not found elsewhere. Items range from handcarved and hand-made Native crafts items to Forks-themed T-shirts and clothing, to unique photographs and books. Chinook Pharmacy right at the traffic light on Forks Avenue offers a complete line of Twilight items. Across the street, Native to Twilight focuses on Native American items as well as Twilight gifts. At Twilight Central the Twilight shop located within Leppell’s Flowers and gifts on Spartan Way look for Twilight items that have a unique Forks’ touch to them, reflecting in some items the traditional Forks craft traditions. The Forks Open Aire Market is setting up at the Forks Transit Center on Saturday, Sept. 10 and features a variety of local crafts, including Twilightthemed items. At all the shops you can pick up information on Twilight sites from wellinformed staff who know the West End of the Olympic Peninsula well, as well as how Twilight relates to the area. Most of the stores and shops that stock Twilight items are within walking distance of the one and only traffic light in town.
