Spring/summer inspection checklist: Battery check
Aging batteries should be thoroughly checked for proper operation. Batteries lose cold cranking power as they age and can be adversely affected during the hot summer months nearly as much as in the winter. Corrosion on battery terminals can cause trouble during start-up as well. Any build-up on battery terminals and cable ends should be removed to ensure good contact between the two. If your battery is more than 3 years old, or if you have had some trouble starting your car, have your battery tested and replaced if necessary.

The Department of L Licensing says they’ve saved paper during the last year amounting to a stack of paper twice the height of the Space Needle, and with that paper savings come comes cost savings. Nearly 400,000 Was Washington vehicle owners have signed up for e-mail car tab renewal reminders, allowing them to renew with a couple of mouse clicks from home. That’s one effort DO DOL says they’re making to reduce costs during the continued tough econom economic times. The agency says sending paper renewal notices cost the state about $3.5 million every year. While there aren’t any current plans ttoo st top se ndi ding car rene stop sending renewal reminders by mail to those who haven’t signed up for e-mail, DOL stoppe stopped sending all boat renewal reminders in 2010. “We know that not eeveryone has e-mail, so we still have options for them, but many folks do, so w we’re asking them to sign up to help us be more effective with their tax dollars,” ssaid Liz Luce, the director of DOL. Luce Lu ce say ssays ayss he herr ag agen ency cy has also expanded their online offerings for citizens, agency reducing or eliminating the need for them to come to a driver licensing office. She says about 220,000 people renewed their driver license online last year, and the number of people requesting their driving record or using other online services has skyrocketed in the past year. “The governor has pushed all agencies to maximize our efficiency and to continue to serve Washingtonians in new and innovative ways, so we are constantly looking to both big and little changes we can make to save money and to make things more convenient for people,” Luce said. DOL offers more than 20 different licensing services online, with more rollouts planned.
