Stay connected Mobile phone and car charger: If you don’t have a mobile phone, buy an inexpensive pre-paid unit to keep in your car so you can call for assistance. Make sure you have a car charger; some phones can also be charged from your car’s USB port. OnStar: An option on many new cars, the OnStar system can get a live operator on the phone with the press of a button and will automatically summon help if your car’s airbags deploy. Stay occupied Children’s books or games: If you travel with children, keep a few emergency activities stowed away to fight boredom and keep the kids occupied while you wait for help. Non-perishable snacks: Munchies help pass the time and will keep your energy and morale up while you wait for help. You don’t need to lay in supplies for a week-long stay; a couple of granola bars and/or some dried fruit or nuts in a non-glass container will suffice.

141 Kemp Street, Port Angeles (just west of Bargain Warehouse)

Where to carry your emergency kit The most logical place to store your emergency kit would be the trunk — problem is if you’re in a collision that damages the rear end of the car, you may not be able to get the trunk open. Instead, carry your emergency kit in a small duffel bag stored in the passenger’s footwell, where it can easily be accessed by the driver (and where it won’t become a projectile in a collision). If your kit includes flares and you travel with children, store the flares in the trunk and keep a backup hazard triangle in the bag.

Tires

All-season tires aren’t the best in the wake of a severe winter storm, especially if you must be on road before the highway crews. Winter tires have treads with more biting edges for better grip on snow and ice, while their softer compound remains flexible even in extremely low temperatures. On cleared roads, however, they might not grip as well as all-season tires, and they often wear more quickly. They do not have tread-wear warranties or grades and should be removed in the spring. Most studs are metal posts a tire shop imbeds into the tread that protrude slightly for added bite. The studs hardly made a difference in traction on moderately packed snow, but they stop better on ice. The gains that studs provide come at the expense of noise. Also, studs can damage roads, which is why some states limit studded tires to winter months, and others ban them entirely. Studded tires have their place in some icy regions, but winter tires are best for most.

Are your headlights always collecting water inside? As the outside temperature goes down and your nice warm headlamps cool off (either from being in the sun or just from being turned on), cooler, moister outside air trickles into the housings. The housings are vented top and bottom to allow for pressure differences, or they would quickly crack and fail. When the clear plastic lens is even a little bit cooler than the air inside the housing, droplets of moisture will condense on the inside of the lens. That’s normal. When the outside temperatures come back up in the morning, the moisture will evaporate. Some vehicles don’t vent as well as others. Some drivers keep their cars parked in shady, damp areas or in cool, damp underground parking structures. And the moisture collects not as

tiny droplets of mist but as what looks more like raindrops and can even run down the glass and pool inside the housing. The first thing to try, if all you have is droplets, is to leave your headlights on while driving for a couple of hours, forcing the moisture off. If you have a spoonful or more splashing around, you may need to remove the housing and dry it out. Pour off the excess water, then add a few ounces of rubbing alcohol to the housing, sloshing it around and pouring it out. Repeat. Let the housing dry for a couple of hours in the sun or inside a nice warm house, preferably in some air that’s moving. Check that any vents aren’t plugged with spider eggs or mud. Install the housing and try to park facing south.

Seatbelt

Whenever you ride in a car, wear your seatbelt every time. No matter how short the trip is — even if it’s only around the corner — you still need to buckle up. This is so important because if the car you’re riding in gets into an accident, the seatbelt restrains you. Even if the car is moving slowly, you can still get thrown around if you’re not wearing your seatbelt. When you get into a car, always buckle up right away. This means locking both the lap and shoulder belts. Some cars have a shoulder belt that comes across your body by itself when the car door shuts, but the lap belt still needs to be locked in place by hand. Other cars have a lap and shoulder belt that are connected as one piece, and the whole thing needs to be locked by hand.

Fall-Winter Car Care 2011

Don’t go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination. If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared and that you know how to handle road conditions.

Driving safely on icy roads ✽ Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you. ✽ Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake. ✽ Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists. ✽ Keep your lights and windshield clean. ✽ Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills. ✽ Don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads. ✽ Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady

areas or on exposed roadways like bridges. ✽ Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you’re likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind. ✽ Don’t assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even fourwheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.

If you get stuck... ✽ Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper. ✽ Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way. ✽ Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out. ✽ Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car. ✽ Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction. ✽ Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner’s manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you’re in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

Keep cool ... Coolant hoses need attention before winter d driving season C l hhoses are essential i l parts off the h totall cooling li system. Coolant They must work year round as the fluid connectors that carry liquid coolant between the engine, radiator and heater. The upper radiator hose delivers hot coolant from the engine to the radiator, while the lower hose returns coolant to the engine. The bypass hose circulates coolant through the engine when the thermostat is closed. Heater hoses carry coolant between the engine and the heater core. Since hoses are so vital to safe engine operation, they should be checked by your service technician before this winter’s driving season. Hoses showing obvious signs of wear such as cracks, cuts, stiffness, bulges, excessive softness or abrasions should be replaced immediately. They can be conveniently replaced when it’s time to flush the cooling system and install new coolant. At the very least, replace coolant hoses every four years because there often is no visible, early warning sign of failure. A good-looking hose can fail due to deterioration of the reinforcement. This deterioration cracks the hose tube, allows liquid coolant to further weaken the reinforcement, and eventually results in an unexpected hose burst or pinhole leak.

Frozen Door Locks: F

Nothing can be more frustrating tthan finding your car door locks th ffrozen when you are ready to leave. fr O One way to prevent this from happening is to place a magnet over the lock overnight. Another way to prevent frozen locks is to dip your key into Vaseline, put it into the lock, and turn the lock back and forth a few times. Repeat this to make sure the Vaseline is well-distributed onto the parts of the lock. This method should be done once a week during winter months. WD-40 can also

prevent locks from freezing. If you find the lock already frozen, you can spay de-icer into the lock. It is good to keep a few cans handy in the winter months. If you do not have de-icer, heating up the key could offer a quick fix. Hold the key with an oven mitt or tongs and heat the key with a lighter or matches. The heated key inserted into the lock should melt the ice. If the key is made of only metal, you can heat the key while it is in the lock. Do not try this with keys that have plastic at the top. Petroleum jelly or Vaseline can melt the ice. Dip the key into the Vaseline, then insert it into the lock. Once in the lock try to wiggle the key. Do not force the key to turn; this could result in breaking the key off in the lock. If this does not work right away, repeat the steps three or four more times, then wait for five minutes. As a last resort when all else fails, you can use a hair dryer. Plug the dryer into an extension cord, and direct the air at the lock. Make sure to block any wind with your body. When using this method, you can put the key into the lock to help direct the heat.

Fall-Winter Car Care 2011

Frozen Car Door:

You can prevent your door from freezing shut by spraying the door frame with spray cooking lubricant like Pam. If you have not treated the doors and find them frozen shut, try these steps to unfreeze them. First, try all of the doors (including the hatch) to find the one least frozen. Do not try to force a frozen door open. This can damage the seal around the door. Next, while wearing gloves, hit the ice with the palms of your hands, and remove the ice as it breaks. If this method does not work, you can use a hair dryer to melt the ice.

Frozen Power Windows:

When you push the button to roll down your power window and it does not go down, do not keep pushing the button. The window is likely frozen to the weather strip on the outside of the car. If you keep trying to roll the window down, you can damage the window motor, and this could be expensive to repair. The best thing to do is to insert a credit card or plastic comb between the window and the strip. This should help to break up the ice. Remove the ice as you go. If you can, wait until the car interior warms up. The ice should then melt shortly.

Starting in the cold

Although you might think it’s easier on your car to let it sit and gently warm up, doing so is a bad idea for a number of reasons. Most importantly, it is a waste of gas.

The majority of cars on the road today use electronic fuel injection. When your car’s engine is cold, the computer compu tells the fuel injectors to stay open longer, allowing more fuel into the engine to help it run ccold. As the engine warms up, the injectors let in less fuel and everything returns to normal, so to speak. The problem is, letting your car sit and idle is the slowest way to bring it up to operating temperature be because it’s generally sitting in your drive at just above idle speed. And this method to warm up also invites other problems. Remember that modern cars are equipped with a multitude of devices to he help them run clean, including a catalytic converter, a device in the exhaust system that works to burn off unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust stream. A cold engine emits a far higher percentage of unburned hydrocarbons than a warm engine. Unfortunately, the average catalytic converter can’t process 100 percent of unburned hydrocarbons even in the best of times. Importantly, the catalytic converter needs high exhaust temperatures to work properly. Throw in a cold engine emitting a high percentage of unburned hydrocarbons, repeat several hundred times, and you can end up with what’s called a “plugged” converter. In a nutshell, the converter becomes overwhelmed and literally ceases to function. This won’t happen all at once but over time, the end effect is the same: poor mileage and significantly dirtier exhaust. The best bet? Even when it’s 10 degrees F outside, start your car, let it run for 30 to 60 seconds to get all the fluids moving, then drive off gently. Your engine will warm up faster, your exhaust system will get up to temperature faster so the catalytic converter can do its thing, and you’ll use less fuel. If it’s below zero outside, it would be a good idea to give the engine five minutes or a little less before you drive off.

Fall-Winter Car Care 2011

Don’t forget about Fido! Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to clean up any spills from your vehicle thoroughly, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for more information.

A high degree of performance Thermal stability is critical, especially for year-round driving. At high temperatures, better thermal stability means less chance of viscosity breakdown and fewer deposits. At low temperatures, better pumpability means engine oil gets to critical engine parts quicker. The part-synthetic formulation in 76 Super Synthetic Blend brings enhanced thermal stability at high temperatures and better pumpability at low temperatures compared with conventional engine oils, for extra protection in all driving conditions. Cleaner engines, clear advantages Because synthetic base stocks have higher oxidation resistance, 76 Super Synthetic Blend provides improved resistance to oil thickening and fewer deposits for a cleaner-running engine. It protects against sludge and varnish formation. Additional benefits include • Rust and bearing corrosion resistance • Low volatility for reduced oil consumption • Good foam resistance • Enhanced wear protection • Available in three viscosity grades: 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30. Get affordability and high performance without compromising engine protection. Ask for 76 Super Synthetic Blend Motor Oil. Lubricants 638 Marine Drive Port Angeles, WA 98363
