ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2010

When the going gets tough, the tough get going In last year’s annual report, we took on the challenge of looking forward into 2010, knowing that it would be a challenging year for both our members and the Chamber as we searched for resources in this whitewater economy. Striving to adhere to the inspiration that “When the going gets tough, the tough get going,” the Chamber launched several new events and programs in an effort to better serve our membership.

It happened in 2010: The launch of The Incredible Edible Festival! I’ve been advised on many occasions that it is technically wrong on many levels to refer to the event as the first annual Incredible Edible Festival but I think it reflects the positive approach the Chamber has pursued — the festival was designed to be the beginning of something great and under the leadership of Chair Christy Rookard and her team of dedicated volunteers it was an outstanding success! Watch for more in 2011! The Chamber joined Facebook and Twitter in our search for more “followers” to “tweet” and the Business Retention & Expansion Committee introduced “Sequim Business Friends & Followers.” The fourth annual Business 2 Business Expo (B2B) was a yet again a resounding success under the leadership of returning chair Deborah Rambo Sinn and the support of our event sponsors, vendors, attendees and the Chamber board volunteers and staff. B2B provides a unique forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable local resources. The Shiso City Sister City visit in 2010 was an especially unique experience with the arrival of the mayor of Shiso City, Japan, and city representatives. Plans are under discussion

P eninsula Mortgage

regarding the potential for a business excursion to Shiso City by Sequim Chamber members. Interested? Contact the Chamber and we will add you to the list! The Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again this year with its 26th annual performance during the Christmas holidays. I would like to extend a personal thank you from the Chamber to the 2010 Irrigation Festival Royalty Court — Queen Fallon, Princesses Ashley, Sarah and Sierra for their dedicated service to the festival, the Chamber and the community throughout the year. The queen and princesses served with grace and professionalism as ambassadors for Sequim as they attended parades across western Washington and local events.

What’s in store for 2011? The prognosis we hear from the economic experts is cloudy — one day it’s looking sunny and the next report is gloomy. So what’s the Chamber to do? Press onward! In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2010, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas to launch and Vice President of Special Projects Jeff Anderson and his committee will be making announcements of special events! Check out the committee reports on Pages 10-11 for more details. We will be pursuing avenues to enhance membership benefits and have a major overhaul of our website planned for early 2011. After nearly three years as president of the Chamber board, Bill Littlejohn has “retired” as president and will be serving as our past president for 2011. We offer Bill a huge collective THANK YOU for his leadership, guidance and support during his extended tenure as president. This year begins under the inspirational and energetic leadership of our new president Christy Rookard! The Chamber Board and staff extend our sincere thank you to our Chamber members for their continued support for the Chamber. Your investment in the Chamber is truly valued and appreciated. — Executive Director Vickie Maples

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2010

Chamber’s financial picture The Chamber board of Directors adopts an annual budget to provide for the most efficient and productive use of revenues received by the Chamber throughout the year. The board then monitors Chamber revenues and expenditures through a variety of reports provided at each monthly meeting of the board. The Chamber’s fiscal year is based on the calendar year (Jan. 1-Dec. 31) beginning Jan. 1, 2010. The Chamber ended the 2010 budget year with an estimated net profit of $3,500. As we indicated last year, it is important to note that the Chamber’s annual budget provides for separate accounting for the following activities: Chamber member services, Visitor Information Center operations, Irrigation Festival, Shiso City Sister City Program, Flower Basket/Retail Trade and Sequim Community Choir. A copy of the Chamber’s prior and current budgets is available to all Chamber members upon request.

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2010

YEAR-ROUND

Community events and festivals The Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year — and the festivals continue to increase! Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends. May 2010 hosted the 115th Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim — “115 Years of Growing Pioneers!” As the longest continuous festival in Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community. May 2011 will host the 116th Irrigation Festival with the theme of “One Hundred and Sweet Sixteen!” As a Chamber-sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities! The Lavender Festival, produced by the Sequim Lavender Growers Association, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the Sequim area and has earned Sequim the official designation as “the Lavender Capital of North America.” Each and every July, more than 30,000 folks visit the lavender farms on tour as well as participate in

a variety of events taking place during that third weekend of July. This year free concerts, including Pearl D’Jango in downtown and Crème Tangerine at the James Center for the Performing Arts, courtesy of the Lavender Festival, welcomed visitors to Sequim. The Sequim Community Choir celebrated its 26th anniversary in December 2010 and performed its annual Christmas Concerts to full houses of local residents and community visitors. The introduction of the monthlong Glass Arts Festival and the Incredible Edible Festival during September triggered an exciting new publication and advertising vehicle now available to Chamber member festivals and events. While working on the marketing for the Glass Arts Festival, festival chair Connie Alexander and her committee noticed that a number of great events and festivals were happening in September — so why not collaborate and generate a collective marketing printed piece? This decision to partner with other events led to the development of the “September in Sequim” publication that featured nine local events. The publication was distributed to the Seattle and Portland areas and to visitors to Sequim during the Lavender Festival to encourage them to return to Sequim in the fall. It then became apparent that with the wonderful variety of events taking place all year, we should develop quarterly publications! The Chamber was asked to and gladly accepted the responsibility of coordinating these publications with the cooperation and dedication of design services by the Sequim Gazette. What started out as “September in Sequim 2010” quickly transitioned into “Sequim Year-Round,” a quarterly publication of seasonal events and festivals held in the SequimDungeness Valley. The “Sequim Year-Round” spring 2011 edition is under development! To further expand the opportunities of “Sequim Year-Round,” Chamber Board vice president and major marketing volunteer Jean Wyatt, developed the Sequim Year-Round blog that now features local area festivals and events produced by both the Chamber and Chamber members. Visit www.sequimyearround.wordpress.com for more information!

Sequim Irrigation Festival The Irrigation Festival started as a celebration of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the valley. It was as much a commemoration of the ditches as it was of the community that made it happen. Ever since that first picnic in 1896, the Sequim Irrigation Festival has been a celebration of, for and about this wonderful community in which we live. The Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuously running festival in Washington, spans two weekends in early May and most of the events are free to the community and our visitors. Our festival has grown over the past few years and it is all due to the generosity of the businesses and individuals of the Sequim/ Port Angeles area. While the Irrigation Festival is a community festival that is overseen by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, it receives no funding from the Chamber. The festival is fully selfsupporting and relies on sponsorships, donations (both monetary and in-kind), fundraising and the many volunteers who help to make the festival successful. The 2010 Sequim Irrigation Festival theme was “115 Years of Pioneers.”

The 2010 logo was created by logo design contest winner Lina Jussell. Amber Lamb, a fifth-grader in Jennifer Lopez’s class at Greywolf Elementary School, created the winning festival button design during a contest open to all elementary students. The Royal Court for the 115th Sequim Irrigation Festival is made up of Queen Fallon Schneider, Princess Sierra Shelden, Princess Ashley Fuentes and Princess Sarah Berkes. They made appearances around town to represent the Irrigation Festival, traveled with the float around Western Washington to other community parades and also performed community service in the area. In return the members of Royal Court each received a scholarship (one $1,000 and three $750 scholarships) and an opportunity to make lifelong friends around the state and within the community. T h e Ro ya l C o u r t represented the Ir rig ation Festival and the community of Sequim throughout

the year with professionalism, dedication and high spirits. Fast forward to 2011! Laura Friedkin created the winning logo for 2011 featuring a carousel design which depicts the essence of the 2011 theme of “One Hundred and Sweet Sixteen.” Emily Westcott has been selected by the Festival Committee as Grand Marshal for the 116th Irrigation Festival. The building of the new float has begun and it will be ready for the first parade in mid-April. Additionally, the search for the 2011 Royal Court culminates in late February with the Royalty Pageant. This scholarship event selects the high school students that will represent Sequim around Western Washington at the parades they attend. At the end of March, the Kick-Off Dinner is held as a fundraiser for the festival, where donated items and the festival pins are auctioned. The 116th Sequim Irrigation Festival will take place May 6-14 with many events, including the First Friday Art Walk, Arts and Crafts Fair, Merchant Fair, Kids Day Picnic, Crazy Daze Breakfast, Grand Parade, Kids Parade, Car Parade and Show n’ Shine, Logging Show, Strongman Competition, Sequim Arts Juried Arts Show and carnival. If you are interested in the Irrigation Festival Committee, contact Deon Kapetan at 461-6511 or via e-mail at Info@ IrrigationFestival.com. The Irrigation Festival Committee meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Mariner Cafe. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. — Maureen Pfaff

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2010

Chamber Board of Directors 2011 Christy Rookard Rookard, President First Federal Incredible Edible Festival Chair I proudly say that I am a native of Sequim, only away for a couple of years when I attended Western Washington University. I returned to Sequim and have been at First Federal for over 19 years. I’m happily married to Willy and have two teenage daughters, Bailey and Alexis, who attend Sequim High School. The Sequim Chamber is a great fit for me because I truly want to help the entire community where we live, work and play to thrive. With my family background in owning their own businesses, I understand the challenges that small business owners fface. I am h honored d to serve on the Chamber Board.

Jean Wyatt, Vice President Individual Member Ways & Means Committee Chair Jean Wyatt retired from the workforce in 2004 after working more than 30 years in information technology. She has strong project management and business systems analysis skills having worked in various industries, including manufacturing, telecommunications and most recently at Microsoft for 9½ years. Her work experience has been on the business side of information technology: designing, managing and implementing business computer solutions. Since moving to Sequim in 2006 with her husband, Rich, she has been very involved in handling the public relations, marketing and advertising for the Sequim Irrigation Festival. Having many artistic interests, Wyatt is very interested in seeing Sequim become an “artists’ community” and is on the board of the Sequim Humanities and Arts Alliance. In her spare time she enjoys working with stained glass, fusing glass, creating canvas floor cloths and working in their yard. She and her husband have been riding their tandem bike for more than 20 years and have ridden from Seattle to Portland 10 times (although that was a few years ago). Since moving to Sequim they have gotten into geocaching and enjoy the new places it takes them.

This is Clausen’s first a fforay into business and says, “It has opened a new world” to him. The challenges are daily but the rewards are great. Littlejohn has h served the Chamber as president from 2008 until the end of 2010 and will continue this service as Past President during 2011. se

Joe Borden, Director Individual Member Irrigation Festival Float Committee Chair When Joe Borden retired from Carquest, he chose to devote more time to his Chamber and Irrigation Festival activities. Borden is twice retired, having served 22 years in the Army, and is a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2010

Lizbeth Harper, Director

Deborah Rambo Sinn, Director D

Blue Whole Gallery Merchants Group Co-Chair “Recently retired, my husband and I moved from Durango, Colo., where we had lived for many years, to Sequim more than years ago. I have a master’s in counseling from San Jose State and a certificate in alternative dispute resolution from Pepperdine Law School. As a glass artist, I am a member of the Blue Whole Gallery and am president of the Community Organic Gardens of Sequim. Always a strong advocate of giving back to the community I live in, I have helped start a chain of daycare centers for low income parents; facilitated many community meetings; mediated ti di t d cases for the court and acted as lead negotiator for the Durango Education Association. As a relative newcomer to Sequim, I welcome the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the Chamber board.”

Olympic Music School Business 2 Business Expo Chair Deborah Rambo Sinn has served as a director on nonprofit boards in Texas, Washington and Germany. She served as executive director of the Museum and Arts Center in Sequim for two years before opening th Olympic Music School in 2004. The school, located in downtown the S Sequim, has a professional teaching staff of six. Previously, she taught at Indiana University, Angelo State University (Texas), Universitaet Luneburg L (Germany) and Peninsula College.

Marc Lawrence, Director US Bank Marc and his wife, Julie, moved to Sequim three years ago after coming here monthly for four years. Lawrence is the Regional Commercial Banker for US Bank and takes a very active role in the locally community. Besides the Chamber of Commerce, he serves on the boards of other organizations such as Sequim Sunrise Rotary and the Olympic Workforce Development Council. Julie is a small business owner and he knows first-hand the challenges faced by many small businesses in today’s economy. His goal is to help make Sequim a vibrant, sustainable community that both residents and business will want to calll h home.

Vickie Oen, Director Purple Haze Lavender Merchants Group Co-Chair “Having been born and raised in this wonderful small town, I enjoy being a true ‘native Sequimite.’” The combination of great childhood memories and the special benefits that a small community offers are why my husband and I chose to stay and raise our two, now teenage girls, in the beautiful Sequim valley. Being a small business owner of Race Street Auto Parts with my husband and working as the general manager for Purple Haze Lavender Farm for the past 11 years have given me a firsthand look at the challenges that face a small farm and a retail business in the Sequim community. I hope to bring to the Chamber board an enthusiasm for all of Sequim and the great community that it is, but my particular hope is to work with my fellow small business owners to continue to create a vibrant downtown Sequim retail area that is not only a great place to visit, but a great place to stay and shop!”

Steve Perry, Director Sequim Gazette Luncheon Program Development Committee Chair Assisting and nurturing businesses is one of the founding commitments a chamber of commerce has to its members. Being involved in varying capacities in three other chambers over the course of my 27 years in the newspaper industry, I know there are so many positive outcomes of being involved in a chamber, not only for its existing members, but by fostering new ones as well. Being general manager of a small business, like so many others, it is a challenge to find the time and resources to help our business grow. A chamber is one source to tap into for help, guidance and networking opportunities. Businesses play an important role in the fabric of our community. Being able to serve on the board allows me to continue fostering relationships that benefit our community and the business environment in the greater Sequim-Dungeness Valley.

Bill Thomas, Director Bagley Creek Associates Business Retention & Expansion Committee Chair Former Sequim mayor Bill Thomas first joined the Chamber in 1972 and an was an active member until his first retirement in 1999. As mayor, from 1995-2002, Thomas worked closely with the Chamber to develop fr such su events as the Lavender Festival and Sequim 2000. He has worked on several boards of directors, including the Sequim Bay Yacht Club.

Ron Farquhar, Director R Shiso-Sequim Sister City Appointee to the Board Ron Farquhar was born and raised in Compton, Calif., graduated from Brooks Art Institute of Santa Barbara, with a Bachelor’s of fr Professional Arts degree. After serving with the U.S. Army, Farquhar operated his own photo studio in La Habra, Calif. In 1970 he entered the JC Penney management program and served with the JC Penney company for 33 years with his last eight years of service here in Sequim. He H and his wife, Carol, retired in 2003. He served as a Sequim City Council member for six years and served as president of the Rotary Club C of o Sequim in 2005-2006. Farquhar is actively involved as a civil service police commissioner and a chairman with the Shiso-Sequim Sister City program and serves as their appointee to the th Chamber board.

Deon Kapetan, Director D Sound Community Bank Irrigation Festival Chair & Appointee to the Board Ddeon Kapetan is the Peninsula Lending Team Manager with Sound Community Bank. Deon and her husband, Kevin, moved to Sequim in 1990 and have been very active in the community and with the Irrigation Festival for many years. She has been involved with the planning of the festival since 2000 including co-chairing and then chairing the Crazy Daze Breakfast from 2000-2006 and then in 2007, she became the chair of the float display committee. Their two children, CJ and Hailey, have been involved in the festival from an early age as well. She is excited about her new role as festival chairman and fe sees se lots of new ideas, committee members and opportunities happening over the course of the th next year. “We are adapting to the needs of a fast-growing festival by developing teams to better facilitate the festival.”

First, and foremost, I’d like to give a big thanks to all the volunteers who give of their time to assist visitors to our area. Your willingness to help speaks volumes and I can’t thank you enough. Of great benefit to all was the installation of a window blind to reduce the heat and glare for staff and visitors alike. This was most noticeable in the summer months and made for a much better environment to welcome visitors. The flat screen TV, purchased and installed in the VIC during 2009, was activated to display information relevant to local festivals and events taking place in beautiful Sequim. The installation of permanent lighting for our outdoor flags now allows for round the clock posting of the U.S. and Washington state flags while negating the difficulty of having to raise and lower the flags in inclement weather. Additional projects include signage to indicate pet walk areas and the purchase of new computers for staff. Thanks to Stephen Rosales for doing a great job of mowing our lawn throughout the year and to the board members who gave of their time for work parties throughout the year. Your dedication is greatly appreciated.”

Thank nk you! Thank you! Thank you! To all businesses, organizations ations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim flower basket! Each year, Chamber member Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the city of Sequim to create more than 100 flower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these prolific blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork! In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area. The Chamber extends it sincere appreciation to all flower basket sponsors and their support for the program which significantly contributes to maintaining the hometown atmosphere we enjoy!

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2010

Business 2 Business Expo The fourth annual Business 2 Business Expo was yet again a resounding success! More than 40 local businesses, restaurants and service providers participated in the annual event which was held at Sunland Country Club in October 2010. This annual event highlights the abundance of local products and services available in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area and provides the local business community with an opportunity to meet and greet fellow businesses. While vendor tables and sponsorships are available only to Chamber members, all businesses and members of the community are welcom to attend. Event Chair Deborah Rambo Sinn reports that numerous Chamber members who participated in this year’s Business 2 Business Expo reported that “It was the best one yet.” We implemented several changes this year, including a new floor plan that seemed to work well for everyone. The mood was lighthearted and positive, businesses were able to showcase their products and services, and food and wine were delicious. Additionally, rumor has it that several deals were made that evening. A huge thanks goes to our sponsors of this year’s event: Gold — Sequim Gazette Silver — Olympic Ambulance Silver — First Federal Silver — Kenmore Air Express Bronze — Sherwood Village/The Fifth Avenue/The Lodge Group The Business 2 Business Expo was touted as the “best networking event in Clallam County” by a participant. We agree! Plans already are under way for the fifth annual Business 2 Business Expo, scheduled for October 2011. Call the Chamber office at 683-6197 to make your reservation now!

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce presented the first annual Incredible Edible Festival on Sept. 25, 2010! And it was — dare we say it — “Incredible”! Based on comments from the participating vendors and attendees, it was a great success! More than 30 vendors participated and there were an estimated 500 attendees. The Incredible Edible Festival is a fun and exciting community event that provides participating businesses with great exposure and opportunities. The festival offered a variety of activities, including classes, demonstrations, vendor exhibits and sales, samples, contests and much more. The focus of the event is on food, including meals, goodies, gifts, decorating, packaging/shipping of food gifts and many other food-related items and activities. Contests in 2010 included estimating the number of candy corn pieces in a giant jar and sunflower seeds in a bird feeder. Participating volunteers also competed in candy wrapping contests and table display challenges! This exciting new event is produced by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and the planning for the next Incredible Edible Festival is progressing nicely with a great group of volunteers. There still are opportunities to help with planning or at the event. If you are interested in volunteering with this festival, please contact Christy Rookard, event chair, at Christy.Rookard@ourfirstfed.com. More information is available on the festival website www.IncredibleEdibleFestival.com. Mark your calendars and save the date! Applications for businesses to participate are available now! Whether you are an exhibitor or attendee, the Incredible Edible Festival will be the event of the 2011 fall season! The second annual Incredible Edible Festival is Sept. 24, 2011.
