ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2011

President’s Report A

big thank you goes out to all the Chamber members, staff and volunteers for your support for the SequimDungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. It is because of your support that the Board of Directors has successfully guided the Chamber through another year full of changes. Shelli RobbKahler, our new Executive Director, has introduced several fresh creative ideas which already have made an impact and we look forward to implementing more of them in 2012. As most of us have experienced in 2011, the economy has not been pleasant in one way or another. Working together in ROOKARD this community is vital to our success. The Board of Directors has worked hard this year to make a positive difference for our members and our community. Just to mention a few: A BIG shout out goes to Vickie Oen and Liz Harper with their commitment to the “Downtown” group helping to organize several downtown events to bring more dollars to Sequim. I also would like to recognize Ken Hays, Mayor of Sequim, and Barbara Hanna, the city’s Communications and Marketing manager, for their support of the Chamber and continuing to foster the partnership between the City of Sequim and the Chamber. Stay tuned for some new exciting opportunities in 2012. Whether it be participating in one of our fund-raisers, joining one of our committees, attending a luncheon or after hours networking event or enjoying some of our many other member benefits to help your business be successful. — President Christy Rookard

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2011

A look back and a look forward to 2012 BY SHELLI ROBB-KAHLER Executive Director

J

oining the Chamber as the new Executive Director in April has proved to be a very robust and rewarding new career direction! I feel incredibly honored to represent the Sequim Chamber and community. It is with much sincere appreciation I thank the Chamber Board, our awesome members, devoted staff and bighearted volunteers for their dedication of time and energy and support to the Chamber in 2011. We couldn’t do it without you! In this challenging economic environment, we all are attempting to do more with fewer resources. This requires business owners to become ROBB-KAHLER more creative in how they run their business and forces them to look closely at every dollar spent. Despite that, I am proud to say we added more than 60 new members in 2011, growing our membership to 445. It is this Chamber’s mission to advance and promote business by providing a forum to address issues and to unite and support our membership and community through programs, events and services. This year we’ve done just that by working together through challenging times and situations, cultivating a very cohesive and strong bond through our committees and projects; an example being the recent Holiday Happening events and Shopping Local — “Pay It Forward” focus in December. The Downtown Merchant group banded together and worked hard to beautify our downtown for the holidays, creating a tree-lighting ceremony for the first time in many years and combining donations for the largest gift-basket giveaway to date. The fifth annual Business 2 Business Expo was yet again a resounding success under the leadership of returning chairman Deborah Rambo-Sinn and the support of our event sponsors,

vendors, Chamber Board, volunteers and staff. This expo provides a unique forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable local resources. The Shiso City Sister City visit in 2011 again proved to be a wonderful experience for the host families and students. Mayor Ken Hays welcomed representatives from the Shiso Board of Education and the Japanese Student Exchange Group on Oct. 29. Due to the tragic earthquake in March, it was decided that Sequim students would not travel to Shiso City in 2011, but two groups of Sequim student ambassadors will visit Shiso City in 2012. Our ever-growing relationship with Shiso City also led the way to members of the Consulate-General of Japan visiting Sequim during the Lavender Weekend festivities. And to round out the year, the Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again with its 27th annual performance during the Christmas holidays. The Chamber continued its marketing efforts through social media, and thanks to chairman Jean Wyatt and the Marketing Committee, we successfully rolled out a brand-new web site in 2011. Chamber members, visitors and citizens now can obtain information about the Sequim-Dungeness Valley easier and more quickly. The new website is not only vibrant and attractive, but also offers faster search abilities, a calendar of events feature and a blog with links to current information and additional web sites. I also would like to extend thanks from the Chamber to the 2011 Irrigation Festival Royalty Court: Queen Taylor, Princesses Marissa, Stephanie and Abigail for their dedication and service to the festival, the Chamber and the entire community throughout the year. The queen and princesses served with poise and professionalism as wonderful ambassadors for Sequim attending parades and events throughout Western Washington. In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2011, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas and opportunities to launch. Please remember, anyone is welcome to partake in one of our committees, please see page 8 for a list of opportunities to get involved! Again, working together makes a huge difference and creates community of which everyone benefits.

Community Events & Festivals

he Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year. Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends. May 2011 hosted the 116th Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim – “One Hundred Sweet 16.” As the longest continuous festival in Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community. May 2012 will host the 117th Irrigation Festival with the theme of “117 & Still Growin’ Green.” As a Chamber sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities! Lavender Weekend, produced by the Sequim Lavender

Growers Association and the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the Sequim area and has earned Sequim the official designation as “The Lavender Capital of North America.” 0,000 Each and every July, more than 30,000 n tour people visit the lavender farms on titude as well as participate in the multitude of events taking place during that third weekend of July. ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2011

Sequim Irrigation Festival

T

he Irrigation Festival started as a celebration of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the valley. It was as much a commemoration of the ditches as it was of the community that made it happen. Ever since that first picnic in 1896, the Sequim Irrigation Festival has been a celebration of, for and about this wonderful community in which we live. The Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuously running festival in Washington state, spans two weekends in early May and most of the events are free to the community and our visitors. Our festival has grown over the past few years and it is all due to the generosity of the businesses and individuals of the Sequim/Port Angeles area. While the Irrigation Festival is a community festival that is overseen by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, it receives no funding from the Chamber. The festival is fully self-supporting and relies on sponsorships, donations (both monetary and in-kind), fundraising and the many volunteers who help the festival to make it successful. The 2011 Sequim Irrigation Festival theme was “One Hundred and Sweet Sixteen.” The 2011 logo was created by logo design contest winner Laura Friedkin. Blake Wiker, a fourth-grader in Louise Lemley’s class at Greywolf Elementary School, created the winning festival button design during a contest open to all elementary students. Our Royal Court Queen Taylor Willis and Princesses Stephanie Laurie, Marissa Haner and Abigail Vidals represented the Irrigation Festival and the city of Sequim in parades, civic events and festivals throughout the year with professionalism, dedication and high spirits. They made appearances around town to represent the Irrigation Festival, traveled with the float around Western Washington to other community parades and also performed community service in the

area. Preparations are now being made for the 117th Sequim Irrigation Festival. The theme “117 & Still Growin’ Green” will be used throughout the festival. The 2012 logo was again created by logo design contest winner, Laura Friedkin. In addition to the logo design contest, a contest for the festival button also was held. The festival button design contest was open to elementary school students and was won by Melody Workman, a fifth-grader in Sue Park’s class at Helen Haller Elementary School. The festival buttons will sold by the fifth-graders from the Sequim School District in late March. Darrell Sharp has been selected by the Festival Committee as Grand Marshal for the 117th Irrigation Festival. The Sequim Pioneer Association also has selected the Grand and Honorary Pioneers for 2012. Jerry Anguli and Carolyn Baumunk will represent the festival as Grand Pioneers and Margaret Erickson and Chuck Baumunk will serve as Honorary Pioneers. Congratulations to our 2012 dignitaries!

Planning and building for the 2012 Irrigation Festival already has started. The building of the new float to represent the theme began after the last parade in October and will be ready for the first parade in mid-April. Additionally, the search for the 2012 Royal Court began in November and culminates in early March with the Royalty Pageant. This scholarship event selects the high school students that will represent Sequim around Western Washington at the parades they attend. At the end of March, the Kick-Off Dinner and Auction will be held as a fund-raiser for the festival, where donated items and the festival pins are auctioned. The 117th Sequim Irrigation Festival will take place during the May 4-13 with a lot of events. educational exchange of freshmen students from Shiso, Japan and freshmen students from Sequim schools. The association works diligently to maintain the Sequim-Shiso Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park and supports the City of Sequim when hosting dignitaries and citizens who visit from Shiso, Japan. In 2011, the association hosted 14 students and three chaperones. They plan to support another visit in the fall of 2012 and to send a Sequim schools delegation to Shiso in October. During February, the association will work with the local Readers Theatre Plus group to raise funds for hosting expenses and to increase awareness of the student exchange and Japanese culture.

We finally were able to update all the center’s computers and get the staff all on the same page. This should help ease the workload a bit. After a visit from the fire marshal, we completed a drywall project to the upstairs storage area. Many thanks are due to Marty Kahler for bringing the electrical system up

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2011 to date. Finally, continued thanks are due to Stephen Rosales for the lawn mowing and all those who have supported our work parties. Once again, we have to thank all the volunteers who do so much to welcome visitors to our fair city. I can’t say enough how much their work is appreciated. Incidentally, if you want to volunteer, we would love to have your help. The coming year is going to be a lean one so we will concentrate on those items we can improve with a minimum of cost. Our big expenditure will be to replace the center sign which has been on a temporary stand since its blow down.

Legislative Committee Chair: Ron Gilles Meeting date: As Needed Gilles monitored and reported to the board on legislative items of interest to the board and its members. One of the main areas of concern is WRIA 18, which is new regulations affecting land owners with private wells in our east end of Clallam County. These rules have been in process of change for several years now and the current proposed-draft rules are scheduled to go into

effect August 2012. Another area of focus has been the City of Sequim — Zoning, Critical Areas update and Downtown Plans that are important to follow. In addition, Gilles has been working on the SMP (Shoreline Master Plan committee) with regard to updating the County Shoreline Master Plan which is to be done by the end of 2012.

Marketing Committee Chamber Staff Meeting Date: As needed After releasing Request for Proposals to update the Chamber’s web site, a vendor was chosen and the work began; the Chamber rolled out its new web site on July 21! This new web ite allows members to have better visibility with improved search capabilities, a blog to keep members more informed about chamber and member happenings and events, and more information for our members that is easier to read and understand. The chamber is offering improved features to its members, including ads on the web site, and pictures and member pages that are easy to maintain.

For the fifth year, the Business 2 Business Expo was a resounding success! More than 40 local businesses and restaurants participated in October 2011. The evening was a fun-filled event, with many vendors providing games and prizes as well. The annual event highlights the abundance and quality of our local businesses and many great connections are always made during the evening’s event. The Business 2 Business Expo could not take place without the wonderful help from our sponsors who were: • Gold – Sequim Gazette (5th year!) • Silver – First Federal • Silver - The Lodge at Sherwood Village/Sherwood Assisted Living/The Fifth Avenue Retirement Center and Olympic Ambulance. • Bronze – Sequim Health and Rehabilitation • Bronze – US Bank • Bronze – KSQM We also want to thank KSQM for doing a live broadcast of the event and to Wave Broadband for supplying wi-fi to our vendors for the evening! Plans already are under way for the sixth annual Expo that will be held in October 2012. This evening is touted as the best networking event on the peninsula, so call the Chamber and reserve your place for 2012!

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2011

Chamber Board of Directors 2012 Christy Rookard, President First Federal The past three years serving on the Sequim Dungeness-Valley Chamber of Commerce Board has been an invaluable experience. Having been born and raised in Sequim, serving in this capacity has been an opportunity to give back to the community that raised me. After graduating from Sequim High School and attending Western Washington University, I returned to Sequim to marry my wonderful husband, Willy, and start a family. I have two beautiful daughters, Bailey and Alexis. Bailey is a senior attending Peninsula College as a Running Start student and Alexis is a sophomore at SHS. Earlier this year, I celebrated 20 years of employment at First Federal. I started as a teller and have worked my way up to branch manager as my current role. With the background in the banking industry and both sets of parents having owned their own business in Sequim, I feel I have the real life experiences to help me contribute to the Chamber Board.

Bill Littlejohn, Past President The Lodge at Sherwood Village Bill Littlejohn grew up in Sequim and stayed here after graduating from college with a degree in business and accounting. Most of his professional life has involved managing health care facilities. Littlejohn owns and operates Olympic Ambulance Service, Sherwood Assisted Living, The Lodge at Sherwood Village, and the Fifth Avenue Retirement Center. He was on the board of Olympic Medical Center for 11 years and on the Economic Development Council board for three years. Littlejohn has served the Chamber as president from 2008 until the end of 2010 and will continue this service as Past President during 2012.

Scott Clausen, Secretary/Treasurer Peninsula Mailing Scott Clausen was raised in Iowa and Minnesota. After a career in military service he spent time in the education and private sectors. The Clausens fell in love with Sequim with their first visit and moved to this area in 2003. In 2005, they opened Peninsula Mailing and celebrate six years of operations in December. Clausen continues to enjoy Sequim and believes this community is the best in Washington.

Joe Borden, Fundraising Chair Individual Member When Joe Borden retired from Carquest, he chose to devote more time to his Chamber and Irrigation Festival activities. Borden is twice retired, having served 22 years in the Army, and is a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and his wife, Tawana, moved to Sequim in 1986 to raise their two children, Chuck and Tawni. Six-time Irrigation Festival chairman, Borden has worked with the Chamber board for as many years and has worked with the Irrigation Festival for more than 14 years. He also is an Instructor for the AARP Defense Driving Course and a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders who attend services for America’s fallen heroes.

Phil Castell, Director Castell Insurance In the mid-1990s while living in the Seattle area, Phil Castell began a search for a place less crowded where he could continue to grow his business in an enjoyable environment with friendly people. Needless to say

Sequim won the search hands down. He found the only thing more amazing than the people he met was the wonderful effect of the rain shadow. Driving home from Sequim in brilliant sunshine to the typical Seattle weather was the clinching factor. Phil attributes the friendliness of the people to the fact that the vast majority of people in Sequim were newcomers themselves at some point and they go out of their way to make new residents feel welcome. Castell said that every member of the community is a voice for the Chamber of Commerce in extolling the virtues of the area and doing business here. He feels privileged to serve as a board member.

Lizbeth Harper, Director Blue Whole Gallery After retiring, my husband and I moved to Sequim five years ago from Durango, Colo., where we had lived for many years. I have a master’s degree in counseling from San Jose State and a certificate in alternative dispute resolution from Pepperdine Law School. As a glass artist, I am a member of the Blue Whole Gallery and am president of the Community Organic Gardens of Sequim. Always a strong advocate of giving back to the community I live in, I have helped start a chain of day care centers for low income parents; facilitated many community meetings; mediated cases for the court and acted as lead negotiator for the Durango Education Association. As a member of the Chamber Board, I have enjoyed contributing to the Chamber’s general mission and being very involved with the Downtown Merchant’s Group.

Vickie Oen, Director Purple Haze Lavender Having been born and raised in this wonderful small town, I enjoy being a true “native Sequimite.” The combination of great childhood memories and the special benefits that a small community offers are why my husband and I chose to stay and raise our two, now teenage girls, in the beautiful Sequim valley. Being a small business owner of Race Street Auto Parts with my husband and working as the general manager for Purple Haze Lavender Farm for the past 10 years have given me a firsthand look at the challenges that face a small farm and a retail business in the Sequim community. I hope to bring to the Chamber board an enthusiasm for all of Sequim and the great community that it is, but my particular hope is to work with my fellow small business owners to continue to create a vibrant downtown Sequim retail area that is not only a great place to visit, but a great place to stay and shop!”

Steve Perry, Director Peninsula Daily News Assisting and nurturing businesses is one of the founding commitments a Chamber of Commerce has to its members. Being involved in varying capacities in three other chambers over the course of my 27 years in the newspaper industry, I know there are so many good things that a chamber can do, not only for its existing members, but by fostering new ones as well. Being general manager of a small business, like so many others, it is a challenge to find the time and resources to help our business grow. A Chamber is one source we can tap into for help, guidance and networking opportunities. Being able to serve on the board allows me to continue fostering business relationships that benefit our community.

Bill Thomas, Director Bagley Creek Associates Former Sequim mayor Bill Thomas first joined the Chamber in 1972 and was an active member until his first retirement in 1999. As mayor,

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2011 from 1995-2002, Thomas worked closely with the Chamber to develop such events as the Lavender Festival and Sequim 2000. He has worked on several boards of directors, including the Sequim Bay Yacht Club.

Linda Barnfather, Director Individual Member As a native of Washington, Linda knows the issues that the state and its communities are facing. She works as an executive legislative assistant to State Rep./House Majority Whip Kevin Van De Wege. During her employment with Van De Wege, she simultaneously served former House Majority Leader Lynn Kessler, for the last nine months of her term. Prior to Barnfather’s work in the public sector, she successfully managed properties in the greater Sequim area. Additionally, she has worked with local land issues on a personal and professional level. She and her husband are small business owners of Barnfather Properties. Barnfather is a graduate of Washington State University in liberal arts. She attended London University on an exchange program in liberal arts and cultures. Barnfather also holds a certificate in non-fiction writing from the University of Washington. She serves locally on the boards of directors of the Olympic Peninsula Visitors Bureau and the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. She is a member of the Clallam Economic Development Council and League of Women Voters, and volunteers at the Port Townsend Film Festival.

Ron Farquhar, Vice-President Shiso-Sequim Sister City Appointee to the Board Ron Farquhar was born and raised in Compton, Calif., graduated from Brooks Art Institute of Santa Barbara, with a bachelor’s of professional arts degree. After serving with the U.S. Army, Farquhar operated his own photo studio in La Habra, Calif. In 1970, he entered the JC Penney management program and served with the JC Penney company for 33 years, with his last eight years in Sequim. He and his wife of 44 years, Carol, retired in 2003. He served as a Sequim City Council member for six years and served as president of the Rotary Club of Sequim in 2005-2006. Farquhar is actively involved as a civil service police commissioner and chairman with the Shiso-Sequim Sister City program and serves as their appointee to the Chamber Board.

Deon Kapetan Irrigation Festival Appointee to the Board Deon Kapetan is the peninsula lending team manager with Sound Community Bank. Deon and her husband, Kevin, moved to Sequim in 1990 and have been very active in the community and with the Irrigation Festival for many years. She has been involved with the planning of the festival since 2000, including co-chairing and then chairing the Crazy Daze Breakfast from 2000-2006 and then in 2007 she became the chairman of the float display committee. Their two children, CJ and Hailey, have been involved in the festival from an early age as well. She is excited about her new role as festival chairman and sees lots of new ideas, committee members and opportunities happening over the course of the next year. “We are adapting to the needs of a fast-growing festival by developing teams to better facilitate the festival.”

Theresa Rubens, Director Theresa Rubens is a native of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and the third generation member of her family. She graduated from Sequim High School in 1979 and pursued a 25-year career in the family business of restaurant hospitality and tourism on the Olympic Peninsula. She loves living in Sequim and enjoys talking to whomever will listen about the benefits of living in a small town! She now owns and operates her own small business and her husband is the general contractor of their construction company. Solar City’s Tesa Boutique & Tanning Retreat recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in the downtown core. “My husband and I have raised our son and daughter here, and felt it was the best place to raise and school our children. Over the years I have volunteered and participated in many

groups. In 1996, I was Sequim Little League president and a 5-year member of the board of directors. I then was asked to sit on the Sequim’s Citizens Advisory Committee for the Master Plan of Carrie Blake Park. It is wonderful to see the park plan come alive and be such a beautiful showcase of nature and life in Sequim. Within the arts I sat on the board of directors of Pioneer Dance and enjoyed the Biannual Dance Recital. I hope to bring to the Chamber of Commerce Board a voice in which small town life can be enriched so businesses can grow and prosper within the integrity of what Sequim is to so many of us, a gift. I would like to continue to encourage people to shop locally and with their local merchants, who work so hard to remain a vibrant retail core.

Michele Sorrentino, Director Michele Sorrentino moved to Sequim 22 years ago from California where she and her husband, John, owned a small garment factory. She has lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Spokane and finds Sequim to be one of the most beautiful and friendly places to live. Sorrentino is Assistant Vice President and regional team leader at Sound Community Bank in the Sequim office. She has been in banking for 30 years and with Sound Community for 14 of those years. She has participated in the Irrigation Festival, Boys & Girls Club, Paint the Town, Relay for Life, Northwest Harvest, October Fest, Lavender Festival and numerous golf-tournament fundraisers. “I care about our community and feel it is a privilege to have an opportunity to assist the Sequim Chamber in serving our community.”

Liz Parks Liz grew up in Jamaica, West Indies, and came to the United States with her family in 1970 to Miami, Fla. She became a proud U.S. citizen in 1976. Sequim Visitor Information Center The Chamber staff and volunteers operate the Visitor Information Center (VIC) seven days a week with closures scheduled only for major family holidays. Approximately 90 percent of the Chamber’s building is allocated to the operations of the VIC. While some of our visitors arrive at the VIC at some point during their stay in Sequim, many others may not be staying in Sequim but merely passing through to Port Angles or Hurricane Ridge, heading to Forks to experience the “Twilight” phenomenon, the West End, heading toward Seattle or exploring our area during their stay elsewhere on the peninsula. Others still are trying to decide where to stay, how long they should stay and what to do while they are here. And that’s where our staff and volunteers can help! In addition to providing staff support for telephone calls, travel planner mailing and e-mail responses, the Chamber staff and volunteers provide information at the VIC to encourage visitors to: 1. Stay in Sequim 2. Extend their stay in Sequim 3. Return to Sequim for another visit 4. Encourage friends and families to visit Sequim 5. Change their plans and stay in Sequim

Flower baskets

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim flower basket! Each year, Chamber volunteer Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the city of Sequim to create more than 100 flower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim. The agriculture class selects the flower theme, buys the seeds and starter plants, and prepares the baskets. The city crews install the baskets and then water and fertilize the baskets until nature dictates their removal. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these prolific blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork! The proceeds from the sponsors also fund the annual holiday lights that magically appear each year at the Bank of America Park at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. This magical corner plays host to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Irrigation Festival Royalty elves each year along with the musical talent of the Sequim City Band. In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area. The Chamber extends it sincere appreciation to all flower basket sponsors and their support for the program which significantly contributes to maintaining the hometown atmosphere we enjoy!
