Danny Vernon — Elvis
With the voice, look and passion of the 20th-century icon, Danny Vernon strives to recapture Elvis Presley’s appeal to an ever-growing audience. Vernon creates a show that holds the excitement of the King on stage throughout various stages in his career. He shows respect and supports the integrity of the man and his music. He enjoys performing all three decades of Elvis’ career, including the “recklessly abandoned” hillbilly cat 1950s, the sleek 1960s movie years including the Comeback Special, and the sexy 1970s jumpsuit years. Be there Thursday evening — this is a show you can’t miss.

rockin’ brand of original and cover music. Their sound is a blend ranging from Keith Urban to Johnny Cash. The six-member band has opened for many well-known artists. The two Saturday night shows will be the only opportunity to catch this talented group.
Royalty Coronation The Clallam County Fair Royalty Coronation is on the Wilder Stage at 7 p.m. The reign of Queen Marissa Wilson and Princess Stephanie Lindquist will be coming to an end. Three local girls — Brooklyn Bauer, Katelyn Noard and Ruby Jackson — are vying for the royalty crown and have been busy this spring and summer with fundraising and marketing for the county fair. Come on out and celebrate with them Thursday evening.
Desperado — Eagles Tribute Chris Ward’s Desperado Tribute to the Eagles has musically demonstrated the fact that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Come out Friday night to hear the 1970s hits including “Hotel California,” “Take It Easy” and “Lyin´ Eyes.” Join us for a little nostalgia and a whole lot of rockin´ from this Western Washington band.
Brian Ledbetter Forget about coat tails, top hats and bunny rabbits. This young, hip performer presents thrilling magic with a universally appealing contemporary flair. Brian Ledbetter’s extensive background in theater has benefitted his magic, honing it to a seldom reached

In her live performances she has the undeniable ability to captivate and connect with her listeners.

The Athletics of Rodeo Bareback riding A bareback rider begins his ride with his feet placed above the break of the horse’s shoulder. If the cowboy’s feet are not in the correct position when the horse hits the ground on its first jump out of the chute, the cowboy has failed to “mark out” the horse properly and is disqualified. Throughout the 8-second ride, the cowboy must grasp the rigging (a handhold made of leather and rawhide) with only one hand. Optimum spurring action begins with the rider in control, his heels at the horse’s neck. He then pulls his feet, toes turned outward, to the horse’s withers until the cowboy’s feet are nearly touching the bareback rigging. A rider is disqualified if he touches his equipment, himself or the animal with his free hand. The rider is judged on his control during the ride and on his spurring technique. The score also is based on the rider’s “exposure” to the strength of the horse. In addition, the horse’s performance accounts for half the total score.
Breakaway roping Breakaway roping is a modification and adaptation of men’s tie-down calf roping. The contestants begin behind a rope barrier. The barrier is released automatically by a
measured length of twine around the calf’s neck. When the calf reaches the end of the twine, the barrier is tripped. If the roper rides through the barrier before it is tripped, a 10-second penalty is added to the total time. The loop must be thrown and go over the head of the calf. When the slack in the rope is pulled tight, the tension will break a string that is holding the other end of the rope to the saddle horn. When the rope “breaks away” from the saddle, the judge will drop the flag to stop the timing watches.
Team roping The header is the first cowboy out of the box. He chases down the steer and ropes him around the head and once around the neck or around both horns. The header must turn the steer to the left, giving his partner (the heeler) a chance to rope both of the steer’s hind feet. If the header breaks the barrier, a 10-second penalty is added to the total time; catching only one hind leg results in a 5-second penalty. If the heeler tosses his loop before the header has changed the direction of the steer, it’s called a “crossfire” and it results in a disqualification. The run is complete, and the clock is stopped, when the steer is secured, the team ropers’ horses are facing each other on opposite sides of the steer, and the slack

Barrel racing In barrel racing, the contestant enters the arena at full speed on a sprinting American Quarter Horse. As they start the pattern, the horse and rider trigger an electronic eye that starts the clock. Then the racer rides a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels positioned in the arena and sprints back out of the arena, tripping the eye and stopping the clock.
Come see professional cowboys rope and ride at two rodeo exhibitions at 5 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday in the Grandstands.

Sequim Gazette The contestant can touch or even move the barrels, but receives a 5-second penalty for each barrel that is overturned. With the margin of victory measured in hundredths of seconds, knocking over one barrel spells disaster for a barrel racing competitor.
Bull riding Upper body control and strong legs are essential to riding bulls. The rider tries to remain forward, or “over his hand,” at all times. Leaning back could cause him to be whipped forward when the bull bucks. Judges watch for good body position and other factors, including use of the free arm and spurring action. Although not required, spurring will add points to a rider’s score. As in all the riding events, half of the score in bull riding is determined by the contestant’s performance and the other half is based on the animal’s efforts. A bull rider will be disqualified for touching the animal, himself or his equipment with his free hand.
Saddle bronc riding Each rider must begin his ride with his feet over the bronc’s shoulders to give the horse the advantage. A rider who synchronizes his spurring action with the animal’s bucking efforts will receive a high score. Other factors considered in the scoring are the cowboy’s control throughout the ride, the length of his spurring stroke and how hard the horse bucks. Model spurring action begins with the rider’s feet far

forward on the bronc’s point of shoulder, sweeping to the back of the saddle, or “cantle,” as the horse bucks. The rider then snaps his feet back to the horse’s neck a split second before the animal’s front feet hit the ground. Disqualification results if, prior to the buzzer which sounds after 8 seconds, the rider touches the animal, himself or his equipment with his free hand, if either foot slips out of a stirrup, if he drops the bronc rein or if he fails to have his feet in the proper “mark out” position at the beginning of the ride.
Steer wrestling The steer wrestler on horseback starts behind a barrier and begins his chase after the steer has been given a head start. If the bulldogger leaves too soon and breaks the barrier, he receives a 10-second penalty. The steer wrestler is assisted by a hazer, another cowboy on horseback, tasked with keeping the steer running in a straight line. When the bulldogger’s horse pulls even with the steer, he eases down the right side of the horse and reaches for the steer’s horns. After grasping the horns, he digs his heels into the dirt. As the steer slows, the cowboy turns the animal, lifts up on its right horn and pushes down with his left hand. After the catch, the steer wrestler must either bring the steer to a stop or change the direction of the animal’s body before the throw or is disqualified. The clock stops when the steer is on its side with all four legs pointing the same direction.

Draft horse pull an annual favorite Come out to the grandstands at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, to see some majestic gentle giants at work. It’s the annual Draft Horse Show, presented by members of the Washington Draft Horse Pullers Association. The club strives to promote the sport of horse pulling through organized and regulated competitions. Club members spend many hours daily grooming and conditioning their horses in order to get them into shape for competition. Throughout the year members use their horses for logging, plowing, parades and riding in addition to pulling. These members participate in events in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Canada. Each team will have a chance to pull a sled of weights for a distance of 20 feet. The weight on the sled is increased until only one team is able to pull it. Teams from across the Northwest will participate. Horse teams will compete in two divisions according to their
combined weight: Heavyweight 3,501 pounds and over Lightweight under 3,500 pounds Bred for strength and endurance, draft horse teams often pull more than twice their combined weight and the heaviest and strongest team may pull nearly 10,000 pounds by the end of the performance. Draft horses are large, muscular horses bred for heavy work, not speed. Popular breeds include Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire and Suffolk horses. Historically, draft breeds have been used for plowing and farm labor in preindustrialized societies and to pull heavy carts around town. By 1950, using draft horses for agricultural and transportation purposes decreased significantly due to the popularity of cars and tractors. Despite changing times, the importance of true horsepower continues to be remembered through programs such as the draft horse pull.
Belgian draft horses Ace and Pat, driven by owner Bob McGowan from Lebanon, Ore., pull mightily during a Washington Draft Horses Pullers Association event in Grass Valley, Calif. The team won their division at the Calgary Stampede in 2009.

11thKiss annual the Pig contest is set One lucky local veterinarian again will have the unique opportunity to kiss a pig at the Clallam County Fair, courtesy of the 4-H Leaders’ Council. For the past several weeks, all participating veterinarians have had piggy banks in their offices to accept donations in their names. Several businesses in Sequim and Port Angeles also have had display boards to allow voting for your favorite veterinarian. See below for this year’s participating veterinarians. The “winner” — the vet with the most money donated in his or her name — gets to kiss the pig in the swine/sheep arena at the Clallam County Fair at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21. Money raised in this contest provides year-end awards, scholarships to graduating seniors ($750 awarded last year) and helps with costs of out-of-area 4-H teen events. Each 4-H graduating senior who applies for a scholarship and completes
the year receives a scholarship. More than 800 county youths are active in 4-H programs. Previous winners chronologically since 2001 are Dr. Bob Mowray, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Cheryl Adaska, Dr. Dennis Wilcox, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Marna Hall,
