Entertainment Lineup
Old Sidekicks Longtime Sequim residents Bill Camuso, W.L. Martin, Jack Reagan, Steve Sahnow and Vern Sprague comprise the band “Old Sidekicks.” They’re a unique viewing and listening experience, known for their three- and four- part vocal harmonies and just the right blend of talent and foolishness. With their toe tappin’, foot stompin’, knee slappin’, hand clappin’, finger snappin’, sound and humor, they are a pure delight to watch!
Standing on Shoulders Standing on Shoulders is a seemingly simple combination of eloquent songwriting, inspired arrangements, instrumental excellence and tight vocal harmonies. Very simple, but very profound, Standing on Shoulders will be an up and coming cornerstone in the ever-changing music scene, bringing together bluegrass and country influences. Dillan Witherow and Abby Mae recently formed Standing on Shoulders in the wake of their other bands — Witherow & Gibson and Abby Mae & the Homeschool Boys. “South Pacific” by Port Angeles Light Opera Association The Port Angeles Light Opera Association will be performing Rogers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” from July 13-21 at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center. Cast members will be on hand for an encore performance from the show Sunday morning, before the annual Variety & Talent Show. After attending PALOA’s show in July, you’ll want to be in the audience to get one more opportunity to hear the songs from their marvelous performance.

Clallam County Fair 2012 in Tongue and Groove. But now he’s really spread his musical wings, forsaking his bass riffs for six- and 12-string guitars! Folks will find it easy to shake it to not only some great Ches originals, but also to classic rockin’ songs from 1960s icons like The Grateful Dead and The Beatles and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, too. Bring your dancin’ shoes!
Hazelnut Grove After parting company with Deadwood Revival, Ches Ferguson and Julie Campbell found a rockin’ musical voice as Hazelnut Grove. Audiences also may know Julie as the new fiddler with the Tacoma bluegrass group Barleywine Revue or the former fiddler with Looking Glass. Ches is known here as that uke-bass player that held the groove in Deadwood Revival and for those brilliant dancing bass lines
Luck of the Draw A crowd favorite for years, Luck of the Draw is back to entertain fair-goers. This four-member band knows how to do bluegrass music right. As the band begins to play, your toes won´t be able to help themselves from tapping along.

Desperado - A Tribute to the Eagles Desperado, A Tribute to the Eagles, has musically demonstrated the fact that imitation is the highest form of flattery with their tribute to the Eagles. They’re back this year because the crowds loved them, so come out Friday night to hear the 1970s hits including “Hotel California,” “Take It Easy” and “Lyin´ Eyes.” Join us for a little nostalgia and a whole lot of rockin´ from this Western Washington band.
Buck Ellard Band Buck Ellard is an accomplished songwriter, performing his originals along with cover tunes. Buck’s show is a pleasant walk down memory lane with some brand new side streets along the way! Buck joined his first “real” band, at the age of 15, playing fiddle in a three-piece bluegrass band. Once he had played on stage and got a taste of the energy that feeds back from the crowd, Buck was hooked and has been playing professionally ever since. The Buck Ellard Band plays country and rock, with some acoustic sounds thrown in. 2nd Annual Variety & Talent Show Be a star of the community! Light up the stage and be a part of the great entertainment at the Clallam County Fair on Sunday. Money prizes will be awarded for the top three contestants. Feel Right At Home All About Me Consisting of four seasoned locals, All About Me has played just about every type of music over the years. People wonder how the name came about. Joking one night at rehearsal when they were racking their brains for a name, Lorrie Kuss commented, “Well it is all about me, right?” After a good laugh, they decided the name fits them. They play an eclectic mix of songs from acoustic rock to ballads, with an occasional classic in the mix as well. These performers really show off their talent and versatility in what they do. It’s all about the music! Be sure to stop by the Wilder stage on Saturday to catch this group’s two shows. Olympic Mountain Cloggers Clogging is an American folk dance developed in the Appalachian Mountains and is a blend of Irish, African and European dance styles. Clogging originally was danced to live music. Although danced to all kinds of music, bluegrass is still the traditional and most loved music used. The Olympic Mountain Cloggers have been dancing and entertaining in the Port Angeles and Sequim areas since 1985. They have danced for many local festivities including the Clallam County Fair, Irrigation Festival, Lavender Festival and Arts in Action. Jennifer Horton Jennifer is a solo act who sings Disney tunes, oldies and songs from Broadway musicals. She is one of many local talents performing at this year’s fair and she is the 2002 Sequim Irrigation Festival queen. This will be the first time she has performed at the fair, so join us Thursday at noon and give her a big welcome.
Shady Grove Shady Grove delights its audiences with a wide variety of fun and lively folk songs from the 1960s, including favorites of The Kingston Trio and The Brothers Four. This all-acoustic group features strong three-part vocal harmonies accompanied by guitar, banjo, mandolin and upright bass. You cannot miss this Port Townsend-based act.
Jeff Evans For the past 14 years, Jeff Evans has amazed and entertained thousands of people with his brand of magic and comedy. Jeff performs more than 250 shows each year throughout the Pacific Northwest. Besides his stage act, he will stroll through the fairgrounds performing tricks which will amaze you. Jeff was a huge hit when he performed at the fair in the past, so come on out Thursday, Friday and Saturday to welcome him back.

Junior Royalty Junior royalty was started as a way for younger students to be involved in royalty and community events. Senior royalty is open to students in grades 10-12 and junior royalty open to grades 3-6. Senior royalty candidates do not have to be in 4-H or FFA. Junior royalty applicants have to be active 4-H Club members in Clallam County. Candidate selection is based on written essays. Junior royalty members attend the Sequim Irrigation Festival and Port Angeles Fourth of July parade, sell a certain amount of fair passes and make sure their 4-H record book is up to date by fair time.

Fair joins Pro-West Rodeo
The Clallam County Fair became a member of the Professional Western Rodeo Association in the past year. Pro-West Rodeo has its roots in the Washington Rodeo Association, formed by a small band of contestants in 1967. Today, under a governing board of directors, Pro-West ranks have grown to over 600 members. There are over 60 sanctioned rodeos throughout the West. The association believes in its members — in their ability, their professionalism, their integrity. By the
same token, the association expects, and enforces, high standards of conduct from its members. Pro-West Rodeo means top contestants, stock and contract personnel. This combination of top cowboys and rank stock adds up to the unparalleled excitement of “America’s most dangerous sport.” From courageous bullfighters and barrel men to a selection of veteran announcers, secretaries and member photographers. Pro-West rodeo offers the smoothest, most-efficiently managed rodeo package available.

Draft horse pull an annual favorite Come out to the grandstand at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, to see some majestic gentle giants at work. It’s the annual Draft Horse Show, presented by members of the Washington Draft Horse Pullers Association. The club strives to promote the sport of horse pulling through organized and regulated competitions. Club members spend many hours daily grooming and conditioning their horses in order to get them into shape for competition. Throughout the year members use their horses for logging, plowing, parades and riding in addition to pulling. These members participate in events in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Canada. Each team will have a chance to pull a sled of weights for a distance of 20 feet. The weight on the sled is increased until only one team is able to pull it. Teams from across the Northwest will participate. Horse teams will compete in two divisions according to their combined weight: Heavyweight 3,501 pounds and over; Lightweight under 3,500 pounds.
Bred for strength and endurance, draft horse teams often pull more than twice their combined weight and the heaviest and strongest team may pull nearly 10,000 pounds by the end of the performance. Draft horses are large, muscular horses bred for heavy work, not speed. Popular
breeds include Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire and Suffolk horses. Historically, draft breeds have been used for plowing and farm labor in pre-industrialized societies and to pull heavy carts around town. By 1950, using draft horses for agricultural and transpor tation
purposes decreased significantly due to the popularity of cars and tractors. Despite changing times, the importance of true horsepower continues to be remembered through programs such as the draft horse pull.

12th annual
Kiss the Pig contest is set
This is the 12th annual Kiss the Pig and all participating veterinarians have piggy banks in their offices to accept donations in their names. Several businesses in Sequim and Port Angeles also have had display boards to allow voting for your favorite veterinarian. See below for this year’s participating veterinarians. The “winner” – the vet with the most money donated in his or her name – gets to kiss the pig in the swine/ sheep arena at the Clallam County Fair at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19. Money raised in this contest provides yearend awards, scholarships
to graduating seniors ($1,500 awarded last year) and helps with costs of out-ofarea 4-H teen events. Each 4-H graduating senior who applies for a scholarship and completes the year receives a scholarship. More than 700 county youths are active in 4-H programs. Previous winners chronologically since 2001 are Dr. Bob Mowray, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Cheryl Adaska, Dr. Dennis Wilcox, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Marna Hall, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Brian Marts, Dr. Sandra Smith, Dr. Meg Gordon and Dr. Sandra Smith.

The Clallam County Fair is a buzz of activity, filling all five senses during its fourday run. There’s an air of excitement even among adults and teens and if you’re a half-pint or pint-sized visitor being propelled by parents or grandparents, it’s a whirl to take in. That’s why again this year the Clallam County Fair is featuring KidZone, a place to have kid-sized fun. Located in the northwest corner of the grounds, the KidZone is tailored for those 12 years old and younger, although the entire family can enjoy the activities. Featured entertainment and activities include pedal tractor pulls, pony rides and more. New this year, the Sequim Sunrise Rotary is bringing its Build-A-Bale activity to the fair on Thursday, Aug. 16, for Kids’ Day. Kids can learn how to bale hay with this mini baler. It’s free and the kids get to keep the hay bale!

Last year’s “winner” and 2012 contest spokesman, Dr. Sandra Smith, will be cheering on the new winner and giving advice in the challenging event of actually Kissing the Pig.
