Can-do attitude has served roofing duo well for 50+ years by Patricia Morrison Coate Sequim Gazette staff Of the several critical systems in a house, a solid secure roof is near the top of the list because it protects everything from the rafters to the foundation. Procrastinators will find that delaying maintenance often leads to bigger and more expensive projects. “There a lot of things to look at regularly — tabs of the shingles, whether they’re curling or cracking, and soft spots,” said Bill Potter of Quality Plus

Roofing, who’s run the family owned business with his father, John, for the past six years in Sequim. “Maintenance is a big issue, especially with the moss we have up here,” Bill Potter said. “However, the most important part of any roof is ventilation and generally problems

with a roof are ventilation issues because condensation from underneath can cause rotting of the decking and sometimes the rafters.” The Potters, with more than a halfcentury of experience as roofers, offer free estimates and thoroughly check for leaks around skylights, chimneys, valleys and flashing, plus any “soft” spots in the decking, signaling a past or present leak. As a general contractor, Quality Plus can remove and install new decking, something a roofing

contractor that isn’t would have to sub out. Some older residential homes with a 2/12 pitch or flat roofs require a hot tar treatment and Potter said they are strictly “old school” in its selection, believing its application results in a better roof than other commercial materials on the market. Although home owners in a crunch might be tempted to “reseal” a crackled roof with yet

another layer of hot tar, Potter said that just compounds the problem. “We do it and we do it right,” he said, which means taking no shortcuts. “If we walk the deck and feel soft spots, we’ll tell the customers they have plywood issues and that we can’t price the job exactly until we get the roof deck off. That’s just been our experience over the years.” The company’s four-man crew installs all forms of roofing except tile from three leading manufacturers: GAFElk, Owens Corning and Iko and has on-site samples of shingles in dozens of styles and colors. About 80 percent of its business is residential, although it takes on big jobs, too. Roofing materials also

incl include snap-togethm er metal panels and seve types of memseveral brane roofs. Depending on the material, design and quality selected, roof durabili durability runs from 10

years to the lifetime of the house, 50 years or more. “Our best seller is an asphalt composition shingle from Owens Corning with an algae blocker to prevent moss.” To get the best bang for your buck, Potter said, “If you’re staying in place and intend to keep your house and if it’s

Sequim Gazette a composite roof, I would suggest the 50-year-plus Owens Corning Duration or Woodcrest shingles because of their excellent quality. But if you’re going to sell it within the next few years, I would pick the 30-year Duration with the algae blocker. There are cheaper products out there but that’s stuff we don’t want to market because it costs the customer in the long run.” Metal roofs have come a long way from corrugated tin ones seen in farm country — now they’re sleek, simple and come in hues from barn red to forest green — even teal. But a metal roof will cost a home owner probably another 40 percent more than the best composite roof, Potter said, noting that Quality Plus uses a snap-lock panel system without exposed fasteners where leaks could develop. The business recently expanded to include gutter systems, in tandem with roof replacements or by themselves. Quality products and craftsmanship are two of the three values upon which the company stands — the third and the most important to the Potters is customer service. The business offers 24-hour emergency service, military, senior and preferred customer discounts and a certificate of warranty. “We give as much information as possible to our customers so they feel comfortable. We are upfront with our typewritten proposal and show in detail where all the costs are. By the end of a job, a customer is like a family member — customer relations is what it’s all about in running a successful business,” Potter said, noting with pride that protecting landscaping and complete clean-up is a company routine. “We had our best business ever in 2010, probably up 30 percent from 2009, and we have very competitive pricing. We are here for the long haul.” See the website at www.quality plusroofingwa.com for roofing/siding combinations for your home.

Texas in 2000, Cortez said he just jumped in headfirst to the construction business. “I started collecting tools that I would need; I handed out fliers; and I relied on word of mouth” to get the business going. The first time Cortez visited the peninsula he was only 9 years old. He flew unescorted from Texas to Port Angeles to visit his brother who was in the Coast Guard.

“I remember fishing off the dock when I was here that summer and my brother took me camping,” he said. It must have made a deep impression on him, because 10 years later, not long after serving his own tour of duty in the U.S. Navy from 1992-1996, he made another visit to the peninsula to see his brother who had settled here. Cortez said he also decided to make the move and hasn’t looked back. Cortez learned much of his trade

And if he runs into a situation that he needs help with, he has many contractor friends to call on to assist him. “I like to work with subcontractors here locally,” he said, “and keep the work here on the peninsula.” A big boost to his business came several years ago from another handyman, Cortez explained. “He was busy building his own home at the time and he sent customers my way. That really helped me out,” he said. Since then, he has been encouraged by customers who call him back when they need more work done and tell their friends and neighbors about Cortez’s excellent workmanship. From major remodels, flooring, deck construction, painting, roof repair, fencing, log home caulking, porch building and room additions to smaller jobs like hanging large pictures or mounting wild animal heads, Cortez is ready and able. His motto is “Quality — Reliability — Integrity” — all good traits people look for in a general contractor. Cortez often is employed by Bridge Builders in Sequim, helping their clients with projects. “My goal is to stay busy,” Cortez said with a smile. “I enjoy doing it all.” He added that safety is No. 1 for him, after learning the lesson the hard way by having a bad fall from a ladder. “I had climbed up to repair a woodpecker hole in a roof and slipped and fell,” he shrugged — a hard way to learn an important lesson. When a customer calls to ask about doing some work, Cortez said he does his best to explain the cost of labor and materials. “I do all my own bidElizabeth Kelly photos ding,” he said. “I like to take the customers to the Above, upper deck building material stores so they can pick out their and staircase in own windows and doors or other materials. The sound of a stream tumbling over boulders and moss-covered cedars … the serene beauty of a mirror pond lined with lilies … the feel of fresh air on your cheeks as you relax next to the pond sipping a favorite tasty beverage … the

Home Improvement maintenance, Burke and Rampp reminded. “A lot of people don’t realize that a pond is a living thing,” Burke said. “They’re no different than having a perfectly landscaped yard that needs to be mowed regularly or a hot tub that has to be treated.” Rampp was born and raised in Port Angeles and has a degree in landscape architecture and horticulture from Washington State University. Burke also was born and raised in Port Angeles and has lived here most his life, with exception to nine years he spent serving in the military. But none of the diplomas or achievements on their resumes is more impressive than the examples of their work.

“We’ve actually had people photograph their water features and the plants in their ponds to hang as works of art,” Burke said proudly. After a large pond building boom in the 1970s and a smaller explosion in the late 1990s, the majority of the work Full Spectrum Landscape receives is in maintenance and remodeling. Often times, families purchase homes with severely neglected ponds or water features and don’t know what to do with them. “If you have a pond you don’t know what to do with or that you’re sick of, give us a call,” Burke suggested. “A lot of ponds that seem like a lost cause aren’t.”

Educate yourself on energy efficiency by Patricia Morrison Coate Sequim Gazette staff Mattias Järvegren, utility services advisor for Clallam County PUD, knows the top tips for energy efficiency like the back of his hand. He wants the PUD's customers to learn them and incorporate them, too. For some, Järvegren's recommendations will be like preaching to the choir — he's been promoting home energy efficiency for more than half a dozen years. For others, however, how to conserve may be news. "The first thing is duct sealing. If you have a duct system, sealing them is the easiest, fastest way to make a difference in your electric bill," Järvegren said. "Typically you would notice a difference on the day the contractor leaves." Over time ducts, the metal pipes

that deliver heated or cooled air to registers in a forced-air system, can separate from subtle shifting or deterioration of the metal tape joining them. Flexible metal ducts can tear and both can become detached from furnaces and registers. According to Energy Star®, about 20 percent of the air you've paid to heat or cool by running your furnace or air conditioning is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. The result is the more you adjust the system to be comfortable, the more energy that's wasted and the fewer benefits you receive in comfort. Clues to leaky ducts are high utility bills, rooms that are difficult to heat, stuffy rooms, having ducts in an attic, unfinished basement, crawl space or garage and finding tangled or kinked flexible ducts.

"Remember that duct work actually is part of the inside of your house," Järvegren said. Look for a licensed HVAC contractor who will inspect, seal then evaluate your system from stem to stern. Or, if you'd rather do-it-yourself and you can get to the majority of your ductwork, Energy Star recommends sealing leaks with mastic sealeant or metal tape — and not the ubiquitous duct tape because it's not long lasting. Tape duct connections at vents and registers where they meet the floor, walls and ceiling. Insulate around ductwork in unheated spaces.

No debate, insulate! Remember that your home is an envelope against the outside elements. "Properly insulating is like wrapping yourself in a blanket so the

heat stays in the house as long as possible," Järvegren said. "With today's energy costs, insulating poorly insulated crawl spaces and attics will pay for itself in one heating season if a homeowner takes advantage of the PUD's incentive programs." Järvegren recommends stuffing as much insulation as will fit between the floor joists in crawl spaces to get an R-value of 25-30 for this area of the country. Bring uninsulated or partially insulated attics to at least R-38. "I suggest once a year having somebody look at the crawl space to check for moisture problems and nesting vermin that can tear up insulation," Järvegren said. Sears in Sequim features largest appliance showroom on peninsula by Ashley Miller For the Sequim Gazette Sears in Sequim is known for a lot of things. Kenmore appliances. Services on all the brands in the store. Quality tools. Unique gift ideas. But above all, Sears in Sequim has a reputation of outstanding customer service and satisfaction, something owner Bob Grey prides himself and his employees on. “We work with customers,” Grey said. “We help you look for the best promotions and we never force anybody toward a certain brand. We lead them to the products that are going to make them happy long term.” The Sears store in Sequim has the largest appliance showcase on the North Olympic Peninsula — including Silverdale. Popular name brands include Kenmore, Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, Maytag, General Electric, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Bosch, Electrolux and Jenn-Air — which can’t be found anywhere else in the area. From ovens and microwaves to refrigerators and freezers and washers and dryers, Sears has an expansive inventory. “We have it all,” Grey said, gesturing to the large warehouse, with more than eight rows of laundry machines alone. “If we don’t have it on the floor,

coil ranges. In fact, a convection oven with coil-style burners is one of the most common choices among homeowners for rental houses, Grey said. Not much has changed with dishwashers recently, according to Grey. Hidden controls and ultra quiet settings are the most common requests among buyers. Other than that, the choice pretty much comes down to rack arrangement and color, he said. In fact, almost all dishwashers are Energy Star® rated with large wash areas. Refrigerators, an important appliance in any kitchen, are bigger than ever. Literally. Manufacturers are starting to offer the same width fridges with larger storage space by using high density foam. This allows homeowners to upgrade to a “larger” fridge without remodeling their cabinets. While there are many refrigerators available to choose from, certain styles “date” a home, Grey said. Refrigerator and freezer combinations that are split vertically are a thing of the past, he said, and tend to indicate an older home the same way olive and almond colored appliances do. Newer homes are being stocked with fridges that have bottom freezers, sometimes one large drawer, sometimes two smaller compartments, and won’t date a home five years from now. Samsung manufactures a refrigerator that features a second fridge drawer specifically for chilling wine, fish, soda, vegetable platters, etc., and can be set a certain temperature, different from the main section of the fridge. Samsung also offers a “mom” fridge that looks like stainless steel but actually is a platinum finish that’s easier to clean and wards off children’s fingerprints. Also, the platinum finish allows magnets to hang on the surface unlike stainless steel.

even the tightest places. In the oven world, an oldie but goodie is coming back into style. Double ovens are all the rave and a popular purchase in the past two years. “Everybody’s using them,” Grey said, pointing out the dual space for cooking a large turkey and smaller side dishes, like a casserole, bread and pie at the same time at different temperatures. Or, the smaller top portion can be used to cook a small, simple meal without heating the entire oven. Though many people seem to prefer flat top stoves, Sears continues to offer and sell traditional

Wednesday, February 16, 2011 • 23 In addition to household appliances, Sears in Sequim sells electronics, televisions, fitness equipment, vacuums, tools, lawn and garden power equipment and home health products. Delivery salesman Ed Ireland touts plasma televisions as an underappreciated option for home entertainment. “Plasma televisions have a bad reputation because they started out as expensive and had screens that would sag and become grainy over a short amount of time,” Ireland said. “But they’ve fixed all those problems and now they are actually very top-end, consumer-rated products.” Plasma televisions generally run several hundred dollars less than LCD screens and are high-definition capable. Rob Grey, who started in the family business as a child and sold his first tractor at the age of 12, talks tools with customers. Craftsman has a new Nextec line that is lightweight, lithium powered and less expensive. A 12volt compact multi-tool that cuts, sands, scrapes, grinds and charges in 30 minutes is “great to have around the house,” he said. Even more popular than the tool section itself are the store’s cabinets, toolboxes, work benches, hooks and wall fixtures, commonly used to remodel “man caves.” In 2009, the Sequim outlet was named the seventh largest Sears dealer selling appliances. Though the 2010 results haven’t been tallied, Grey said he “still anticipates being in the top 10.” “People consistently walk in and say, ‘Wow, you have a lot of stuff in here!’” Grey said. “And we laugh every single time,” his son added with a chuckle. Whether you need to buy a new kitchen appliance, have your eye on a larger TV or are looking for a good deal on a pressure washer, Sears is a great place to start for all your home projects.

Sequim Gazette

TheCommunity’sown store by Elizabeth Kelly For the Sequim Gazette Offering the Sequim community a way to reuse building materials and supplies, home furnishings, appliances and even some selected collectables, Around Again at 765 W. Washington St. in Sequim will pick up your items and sell them at a fraction of their cost to someone who needs them. Gavin Wuttken, president of the board for the nonprofit company, said he was inspired to open the store when he was at “the dump and watching brand new kitchen cabinets — still in their original boxes — being thrown away by a construction company.” He explained that it was cheaper for the company to throw the materials away than to hold them in their inventory and look for a new buyer. “They didn’t have any options,” he said, “and perfectly good stuff was being thrown away.” He said most things being thrown away don’t necessarily break down and disintegrate in a landfill. “They have found newspapers from the early 1900s that can still be read,” Wuttken said. The Regional Transfer Station in Clallam County is one of 10,000 in the nation, he added. The refuse is compacted and trucked to a landfill in Oregon. Operating as a 501(c)3 not-forprofit organization under the Lessening the Burden of Government and Educational laws, as well as Washingt o n s t a t e ’s Beyond Waste program, they opened in November 2009 and have been a boon to construction companies and homeowners in the area. “Construction companies and individuals can write off their donations,” Wuttken said.

Gavin Wuttken shows a birdbath made from an old satellite dish

It isn’t necessary to be a member of the community store to donate or shop there, but they encourage membership as a way to help keep people informed. Becoming a member of Around Again is free and only requires filling out a form that lists what a new member might be looking for or what they want to dispose of. They have about 400 members to date, he said. They have no employees but many volunteers. The five board members receive a stipend for their time. Wuttken has another job, working three days a week at the Point Defiance Aquarium near Tacoma, but his heart is in working with recyclables.

Kathleen Potter is a dedicated volunteer who takes pictures of collected items and posts them on the store’s website, www.aroundagainstore.org. The website lists a current inventory of 3,500 square feet of “stuff,” Wuttken added. “Everything donated is checked out to make sure it is in usable condition.” The store accepts “appliances, tables, chairs, doors, windows, exercise equipment, used carpets, light fixtures, blinds, lumber, any kind of building material.” They don’t accept most electronics, like television sets or computers, he said. One of the first things they were given to recycle was a donation of 45 vinyl-framed glass patio doors. “People made sun rooms and green houses with them,” Wuttken said. Another project undertaken was crushing 35 old toilets and turning them into landscape materials, he said.

Around Again’s motto is “Yesterday’s Waste, Today’s Innovation.” To that end, they hold workshops on how to reuse materials. “We just had a workshop in November on how to reuse hollow core doors,” Wuttken said. In the free workshop they instructed members on how to build bookshelves, corner cabinets, divider doors and closets from used interior doors. “Hollow core doors made into shelves can hold up to 85 pounds,” he added. There were seven workshops held in 2010, which included three on saving and displacing water. One workshop was held on making useful items from corks. They collect and send used corks to a company in Oregon to be used in cork flooring. “We can also show you how to turn an old satellite dish into a beautiful tiled birdbath,” he smiled. “This is really the community’s

Home Improvement own store,” Wuttken W said. “We like to use things instead of th throwing them out.” T The store’s countertop is made from an old solid maple bowling alley, he pointed out. Currently, they are collecting tools for a tool “library,” he said. “People who need a certain tool for a certain job can just check it out for a short time.” Also available at the store is an “In-Store Artist” program. Artists and craftspeople who make things out of recycled materials can display and sell them in the store. No comm commission is collected and no charge is required for f using their space. from old pallets are just inside the entrance to the store — a decorated bench and a cabinet. “It’s nice to be able to help people out, especially now,” Wuttken said. “I like to see someone come here and pick up something that might cost $30 new for only $2.” Not only does Around Again pick up items for free, it also has a service to help in the planning stages of a remodeling job. “We have a trained crew that can tag and itemize materials in your home that we will take ahead of time,” he said. “Then the owner can claim a write-off for the donation he made.” Wuttken explained that they do like to inspect and accept donated items. “We don’t like people to drop things off here after we’ve closed or at night,” he said. “Someone once dropped off a pool table that had been broken up into pieces. We had to turn around and take it to the dump,” he shrugged. Showing his personal passion for waste reduction, Wuttken said they hope in the future to have a drop-off station at the Regional Transfer Station. “It will mean having a volunteer out there, but I think we can organize that,” he added. An admitted devotee of R. Buckminster Fuller, who spent his life exploring what the “little penniless, unknown individual might be able to do on behalf of all humanity,” Wuttken, with his wife, Sally, live in a Fuller-inspired geodesic dome that he built.

Olympic Restaurant Equipment

Not just for eateries

Eric Schwartz photo

Eric Schwartz enjoys preparing marvelous meals for family and friends in his home kitchen which he designed using commercial equipment.

Kitchen Equipment for the Home Chef by Kelly McKillip For the Sequim Gazette CEO and owner of Olympic Restaurant Equipment, Inc., Eric Schwartz has had a lifetime of experience with cooking and kitchens. His foray into the professional culinary world began when he was just a youngster working at a Chicken Delight Restaurant in New York City. From that first step he moved on to become a classically trained chef working for hotels, restaurants and corporations. Visiting kitchen equipment stores became one of his favorite pastimes and after 25 years of professional cooking, he decided to hang up his chef’s hat and start a restaurant equipment business of his own.

nd seeing Beginning in a single-car garage and customers by appointment, Schwartzz relocated into ever larger warehouses as his business and inventory grew. Encouraged by a friend, he took the leap and opened a store in 1996 on Washington Street in Sequim. By 2007, it was clear to Schwartz that he needed a larger space for all the equipment he wanted to display and sell. Like creating a masterful meal, he put together the elements that would appeal to both commercial and residential customers. An attractive storefront with a great location that was easily accessible from the highway was a

Sequim Gazette must. Plenty of room for customers to shop for all manner of new and used kitchen appliances and equipment on site went into the mix. Then he seasoned the business with friendly staff, design know-how, installation and repair services. The doors to his dream store opened in 2009. The home foodie can find all the kitchen gear needed for preparing great meals including pans, pepper grinders, china, glassware, cutlery, small utensils and appliances. Schwartz offers specialized equipment for holiday baking, candy making, home canning, cake decorating, plus meat processing equipment for hunters. Butcher blocks, islands, stainless steel sinks, wine coolers, apple peelers and cherry pitters make the cook’s job easier. Commercial ovens, ranges, hoods, refrigerators and a multitude of storage solutions are also available. The business has on staff a general contractor and licensed and bonded technicians who can install and repair equipment. Although most of Olympic Restaurant Equipment’s installations are in

restaurants and institutions, the company can design and install a commercial type kitchen for the homeowner. Schwartz issues two stern warnings for the serious foodie who wants to h upgrade to the magic of cooking with professional equipment. astee First, once home chefs get a taste of the convenience and efficiency of commercial grade appliances, they will never want to cook on anything else. Secondly, commercial cooking equipment requires equally serious safety provisions including fire and heating barriers and special hoods and sprinklers. Insurance companies also should be consulted. Schwartz has developed a business relationship with more than 500 vendors and although he generally buys in volume to pass along good prices, he will do his best to fulfill special requests for products. Customers are encouraged to come in the store to browse and check out the antique culinary equipment he has collected over the years.

Partner in Olympic Peninsula landscaping for 7 years by Kelly McKillip For the Sequim Gazette A home’s landscaping imparts the first impression to a visitor of the attitudes and values of the owner. With the largest variety of bark on the peninsula and many types of mulches, soils and rocks, manager Steve Wilkinson of Cascade Bark can provide the materials and information to help Kelly McKillip photo create a beautiful Cascade Bark Landscape and natural yard. Supplies is conveniently Many of Wilkinlocated at Washington son’s repeat cusHarbor and West Sequim tomers are profesBay Road in Sequim. sional landscapers, but his 20 years experience with landscaping materials is really helpful to the homeowner who wants to create his or her own paradise. A great garden begins with good soil and Cascade Bark offers special blends such as lawn mix, garden mix and native soil. Custom blend requests are no problem. Wilkinson will gladly calculate from drawings and dimensions how much product is needed. Advising customers about soil preparation and choosing appropriate amendments is part of the service. Different terrains require different types of bark and mulch. Hillside landscapes require bark that doesn’t slide off, such as the three sizes of nuggets that are available at Cascade Bark. Light barks in windy areas should be avoided and walk-on bark that stays put is appropriate for paths. Barks beautify a landscape, help conserve water and suppress weeds. Mulches are generally finer and provide more nutrients. No order is too large or too small at Cascade Bark. Customers are welcome

to buy a bucketful of material or have hundreds of yards delivered for a reasonable fee. (4-yard minimum for delivery with 120 yards maximum per truckload.) Assisting Wilkinson is Melanie Dunning who works as the office manager, dispatcher and runs the loader. Greg Mottis delivers any and all of the materials and performs other general duties as needed. Cascade Bark is owned by Brady Trucking Company in Shelton which provides consistent products that never have been in saltwater, contain no chemicals and no human waste. Nuggets come from Longview and the rock is brought in from Oregon. The garden mix is organic. Cow manure is from local animals. When it comes time to prune back all that lush growth and dispose of garden debris and grass clippings, Cascade Bark serves as a drop-off center which is available to everyone

Never a cold shower

hot water on demand by Jerry Kraft For the Sequim Gazette When you turn on the shower in the morning and wait for the water to heat up, do you ever consider what a waste of energy it is to have a hot water tank holding those gallons of water, at temperature, and at some distance from the shower head? How about those days when because of showers before you, or loads of laundry or dishes being washed, the water suddenly turns cold and your shower is abruptly ended? The smart alternative is tankless, propane, natural gas or electric powered hot water on demand. H2O Plumbing of Sequim has been supplying those systems for both new and

existing homes since going into business in 1990. Rick McDougal, owner, says that on-demand hot water systems are more energy efficient, provide limitless hot water when needed and save a great deal of money over traditional hot water tanks. “On the peninsula most people who put in these systems use propane, but we also have electric systems for smaller needs. The average home can save half of their annual energy bill for heating water by going from a traditional electric tank to a tankless system,” McDougal said. “The reason is that instead of heating and maintaining the temperature of 40 or more gallons in a tank, the system only heats that water which is immediately being delivered

through the heat exchanger.” The on-demand system also provides unlimited hot water at a consistent, safe temperature. The Rennai brand that H2O stocks delivers 240 gallons or more per hour with no recovery time. That compares to the output of 10 40-gallon electric water heaters or six 40-gallon gas water heaters. In addition, the tankless system saves space in your home, an average of 12-16 square feet compared to a conventional tank water heater. The interior mount systems can be placed in any room using a concentric venting system, which is a single vent assembly featuring an inner, metal vent for exhaust gases and an outer PVC or metal tube for bringing combustion air from outdoors. The result is a compact, direct-vent, sealed combustion system for safety, performance and ease of installation. “These systems are especially popular with new construction,” McDougal said, “but for anyone who plans to be

Home Improvement in their existing home for eight to 10 years, the cost of the system will pay itself back easily. Even better, you’ll never worry about having enough hot water or having it come out at a dangerously high temperature. The electronic controls can be pre-set to a maximum of 120 degrees and that is precisely the temperature that the water will come out every time.” There are a number of digital controllers and even wireless controllers to allow individualized output at each location within the home. McDougal also said that the ondemand systems have a considerably greater life expectancy than conventional water tanks, with most having a typical life span of 20 years or more in residential settings, as opposed to 6-8 years for the traditional tank. “You also have to consider the risks to your home of traditional tanks leaking. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to repair or replace water tanks that had flooded the basement, often without the owners even knowing about it for several days.”
