OLYMPIC LAVENDER FARM After 15 years of showing off her lavender fields, Mary Borland-Liebsch is nonetheless excited for year 16. Although Borland-Liebsch and her husband, Bruce, work their lavender farm nearly year-round, the “official” lavender season opens with this year’s 16th annual celebration of the purple plant and the second Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. “We look forward to this weekend every year,” Borland-Liebsch said. “I like talking to the people who visit and to answer their questions.” This will be Bruce Liebsch’s third lavender fair. He said it is still a bit new to him. The two were married in 2010 after both lost their spouses to cancer. The first Farm Faire for Liebsch was a baptism by fire, as he had not had much experience farming, much less growing and cultivating lavender. But he jumped in garden gloves first and, along with his wife, is looking forward to this year’s Farm Faire. To be sure, growing lavender is labor-intensive. However, with a decade and a half under her belt, Borland-Liebsch admits it’s easier than when she first began. Back in 1996, she and her late husband, Steve, along with other farmers interested in growing lavender, met to talk about … well, growing lavender and possibly hosting a lavender weekend in Sequim. With five acres, the Borlands decided to plant some lavender. The first year they planted nine rows of Provence lavender. “We were living in Mains Farm, so we were going back and forth from home to the farm,” Borland-Liebsch remembers. That first summer turned out to be very hot and the irrigation was turned off, so watering the new lavender plants had to be done by hand. Yes, Borland-Liebsch admits, they wondered what they were thinking. By 1999, more lavender was planted and a studio was added that was used for drying lavender. Eventually Borland-Liebsch began selling lavender products and opened the farm for the summer season as well as the lavender weekend. The couple moved to the farm in 2007. Today, three fields are dedicated to growing lavender. “I never would have thought I would look out at fields of lavender,” she said. “It’s the last thing I thought I would ever do.”

Claire Koenigsaecker, the realtor for the Olympic Lavender Farm, thinks of herself as a service person as opposed to a sales person. She's commonly seen around town in her old red truck, lugging furniture in and out of homes for staging or bringing signs to pound into a seller's front yard. People frequently tell her they can't believe how much work she does to help get their houses ready for listing. The Olympic Lavender Farm is a case in point: Mary and Claire met in 1995 when they were teachers at Helen Haller School. When Mary moved to the lavender farm in 2007, she asked Claire to sell her home in Mains Farm. Mary was impressed that Claire took the time to stage the home for sale, using her own things. "Listing and marketing a home are just the beginning of the process," says Claire. "Negotiating a contract requires a skilled and knowledgeable realtor. Many sellers want to sell their own homes to save the real estate fees; however, they are often actually losing money because they are more likely than a professional is to give up money in the negotiating phase." Claire's job goes beyond the sale: "After the contract is negotiated, the realtor manages the contract through the escrow period. This has become much more complicated than it was just a few years ago." Claire takes special pride in helping buyers and sellers through the process. "When the transaction is complete and I know that I eased my clients' anxiety and saved them time and money, then I have the personal Fifth Avenue satisfaction of a job well done."
