The Best Days of Summer By Steven Boots, Sequim Middle School

“School’s out for summer, and it will be out soon, as the song says. Please be extra aware and careful and safeguard our young people and others. Summer vacations can be filled with wonderful and exciting opportunities if students take the BOOTS initiative and remember that summertime freedom is a luxury. Sleeping in is great, but in life, “the early bird catches the sunrise, or the worm. Getting an early start is the first step to having the most active and meaningful summer. Summer vacation and school days should be a combination of Harvard, West Point and Disneyland. You should fill your days with a little of each. We have wonderful libraries that provide a safe and comfortable environment to further your studies and interests, as well as providing the starting place for a great adventure by reading a book. There are videos, books on tape, newspapers, magazines, readings, lectures and other students who share the same interests. You may

make a new friend. Always carry a book with you. You never know when you may have to wait for your ride or the bus, or you find that perfect space to enjoy the moment while reading. We have art galleries and museums, which provide entertaining and educational experiences. There is music from summer concerts and impromptu musical events. The Coast Guard Flotilla and the Junior Yacht Club teach boating safety and sailing. SARC offers swimming lessons, sports and fitness programs. For those that wish to learn martial arts, we have fantastic instructors and studios. Dance lessons and theater shows are within the area. The Discovery Trail and the many different parks and beaches offer a convenient and beautiful way to discover and enjoy the great outdoors, whether it be on your bicycle, skateboard or as a walker/runner. Our trails and parks offer handicap access as well. Walking your dog or getting a job walking someone else’s is a great way to get exercise and make our canine friends very happy. Bird watching and tours are available at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, where you can take in educational programs as well as a river swim on those warm summer days; remember never to swim alone, but always with

responsible friends. Olympic National Park, Dungeness Spit and the lighthouse, and Sequim Bay State Park provide wonderful choices for outdoor experiences. Carrie Blake Park and the BMX/Skate Park offer bicycle and skateboard enthusiasts a great facility. Our local golf course provides lessons and play. For those who like to fish, we have rivers, lakes, and salt water within a short distance. Our tourism center, schools and local newspapers can help you find schedules and offerings. Summer sports, swimming, tennis, soccer, and the many recre-

ational leagues can help fill your days. Churches offer activities, camps and services. Use your initiative and imagination and ask our businesses as well as the neighborhood to do chores. You may be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to earn money. Fill your days with meaningful activities by creating something, playing and thinking about the possibilities open to you. Visit the senior centers, share your dreams of tomorrow and learn about the past from others. Brighten a day. Remember, this summer is the real thing and not a dress rehearsal.
