Why is the PUD Distributing CFLs? Clallam County PUD is committed to helping our customers effectively manage and reduce energy costs. One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to save energy is to replace incandescent light bulbs with high-quality, high efficiency, long-lasting ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. This is one reason why PUD residential customers have received or will receive 5 free CFLS. According to the ENERGY STAR Web site, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, that would save enough electricity to light more than 3 million homes for a year. Although CFLs usually cost more than comparable incandescent bulbs, they generate energy savings worth up to $30 per bulb over their lifetime, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition to energy and cost savings for the customers, the mailing of CFLs helps the PUD reach conservation targets mandated by the Washington Energy Independence Act (formerlyy known as I-937). These targets g and upp

ward rate pressures were discussed widely with the public during the latter part of 2011. As the PUD’s conservation targets continue to rise as a result of this Act, the PUD looks for the most cost effective means to achieve them. CFLs are the most cost effective to both the PUD and to the customers at this time. A rate presentation named “Electric Rates Presentation” explaining both items, rate pressures and CFLs cost effectiveness, is available online at www.clallampud.net by clicking the “P.U.D. TV” icon on the right hand margin of the home page. You can also learn more about these issues by clicking the “P.U.D. Radio” icon and listening to audio from the January 12th Todd Ortloff Show on KONP. For additional information about the PUD or to view the PUD’s CFL informational sheet, please visit www.clallampud.net.

Benefits of ENERGY STAR CFLs • Energy Savings – Watt for watt, ENERGY STAR CFLs use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs co provide the same level of light. For example, a 23-watt CFL is just as bright as a 100-watt incandescent bulb. • Long Lasting & Low Maintenance – ENERGY STAR CFLs can last up to 15,000 hours, requiring fewer replacements, making them ideal for hard-to-reach sockets. • High Quality - Over the past decade, technological advances and tough ENERGY STAR performance standards have produced noise-free CFLs with fastacting ballasts and high quality light.

Welcome

to the KONP HOME SHOW

Wow, 30 years! It’s hard to believe the KONP Home Show is celebrating its 30th run this weekend in Port Angeles. We’ve come a long way from the humble Home Show beginnings in the Vern Burton gymnasium with leaky tents and just a handful of booths and exhibitors. Now we’re sporting three gymnasium levels full of displays and exhibits. We expect thousands of people to come through during the two days of the show. We hope you’ll again find the KONP Home Show a show for living. We’ve tried to bring you a wide range of exhibits from buying a new home to outfitting ORTLOFF your home, to improving your life. No matter what you’re looking to do with your home or in your life, I’m sure you’ll find the resources and ideas to get started (or finished) at the KONP Home Show. Once again I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor, Clallam County PUD #1. They continue to be an integral part of putting on the show for our community. The PUD’s partnership with KONP has helped the peninsula’s original exhibition for homes, home improvement and living grow and continue to be the premier event of its kind in the area. We hope to see all of you there at the KONP Home Show Feb. 25-26 at Port Angeles High School. And we hope you keep your radio tuned to AM 1450 and FM 102.1 to KONP! KONP unveils “virtual” Home Show Attend a home show without leaving home? In your pj’s? At 2 a.m.? Yup, at this year’s KONP Home Show, we’re unveiling one of the most exciting new marketing tools to date. The KONP Home Show 24/7! KONP has teamed with Lonnie Lambrecht and his staff at Ashton Data, a Sequim company specializing in what I crudely refer to as, “cool digital stuff.” KONP Home Show 24/7 will feature virtual “booths” from a wide-range of local and regional companies. These “booths” may include videos, avatars, product demos, web links — all kinds of “cool digital stuff.” When you visit KONP Home Show 24/7, you’ll be able to visit model homes and shop for real estate, windows and doors, roofing companies, furniture, floor covering, a mortgage and pretty much everything else you’ll find at the REAL KONP Home Show this weekend. And you’ll be able to visit 24 hours a day, right from the comfort of your computer. As a marketing tool, KONP radio continually will be educating, inviting and reminding our audience to visit KONP 24/7, so the exhibitors should enjoy a constant flow of “traffic” to their company displays. Want to see the “virtual” home show? Come to Port Angeles High School this weekend and you’ll find KONP Home Show 24/7 and take a look. Officially, the online home show will launch on March 1. You’ll be hearing a lot about this in the months ahead. BY STAN COMEAU KONP STAFF

Home Show, , o i d a r P N O K e lik s e l e g n A t r o P e ar fixtures We’re marking the 30th KONP Home Show this weekend. Think about that: 30 years, THREE decades! That means when the very first KONP Home Show was being held, the kids were babies and I still had hair. Much has changed. After 30 such events, it’s no wonder that the show has become a way of marking time each year in Port Angeles. After the Home Show, we start looking for the first robin and checking to see if the lawn mower will start. The Mariners opener can’t be far off. The Home Show is like the Clallam County Fair six months early. Each year it’s very similar to the year before, but it’s never the same as the year COMEAU before. So folks keep showing up by the thousands, not wanting to miss anything — and not wanting to miss seeing everyone. Another reason why the Home Show has become a chunk of the local tapestry is because it’s rooted in KONP radio — the daily local narration of life in P.A. In the morning we get our gruff “good morning” from Scooter Chapman and we hear about a horse on the highway west of Joyce. Rush Limbaugh drives the local left crazy until noon and then Todd Ortloff has the news and his “T.O. Show” with guests ranging from Oliver North to the lady with tips on keeping the dog from chewing on the sofa leg. From Dan Kari on the way home to Sandy Keys’ “Weekend Wrap Up,” our little radio station is a member of most families in our neighborhood. The hometown radio station brings the community together around the radio. The KONP Home Show brings us together to kick the tires on the new riding lawn mowers, be reminded that the house needs paint and get a sandwich and coffee from the Kiwanis Club. People buy stuff at the Home Show, from a real person. We live in an age where you can buy most anything from home on your computer. Convenient? Yes. But also boring, impersonal. There’s no handshake. You don’t get the satisfaction of making a deal with another human being. You get that at the show. So plan to meet your friends, neighbors and community this weekend at the KONP Home Show. Can’t make it? Just flip on the radio, your neighbors and friends will be there, too. BY STAN COMEAU KONP STAFF

KONP Home Show planning a year-round effort How does KONP organize and pull off the largest annual exhibition event on the Olympic Peninsula, despite having a staff of fewer than a dozen people? They prepare almost year-round and enlist the help of professional event planning specialists and local service club volunteers. “We love the Home Show and this year’s event will be every bit as special as people have come to expect,” said KONP Sales Manager Stan Comeau. Organization for this year’s 30th annual KONP Home Show started last February, immediately following last year’s successful offering at Port Angeles High School. KARI Comeau noted, “It’s almost getting to be an ongoing process,” as staff teamed up to look at what went right in 2011 and eyed possible improvements. Last summer, KONP sales and marketing specialists began contacting exhibitors, looking for those interested in returning for the 2012 event, then marketing for replacement vendors to sell out the show. “It sounds terrible to say this, but we actually don’t want to have all of the same exhibitors back year after year because you essentially would end up with the same show,” Comeau said. While many stalwart local businesses have returned to the same booth locations at the Home Show, Comeau says KONP attempts to “keep the show fresh” with new faces, including many start-up business ventures each year, both from the local and Puget Sound areas. The transformation of the Port Angeles High School gymnasiums from athletic facility to Home Show venue actually starts on the Thursday night prior to the event. “That’s the manual labor part and we get lots of help from Continued page 10

Add insulation and other energy saving measures for a lower bill By Mattias Jarvegren Utility Services Advisor II As upward electric rate pressures become more and more common, it is now even more important to take advantage of every cost-effective opportunity to use electricity as efficiently as possible. That can include easy habit changes like turning off lights and appliances that don’t need to be on, or turning down the heat a couple of degrees. Many conservation measures come at a cost and that’s where Clallam County PUD can help. We have a 30-year tradition of offering homeowners and businesses energy conservation cash incentives. One of the best ways to save money on heating is to add insulation in your attic. If you live in an electrically heated home and you have any insulation in your attic below an R-19 (about 5 inches), Clallam County PUD offers 90-cents a square foot toward the cost, up to R-49, with the incentive level capped at 60% of the full project cost. Your savings could amount to 5 to 25 percent of the heating portion of your bill. The PUD has conservation specialists who can help you determine what you’ll save. There are many other incentives. Are you thinking about replacing an electric furnace with an efficient heat pump? Clallam County PUD can now pay up to $1,900 in incentives to help move to a heat pump. You could save up to 50 percent of the energy used to heat your home. Do you heat with electric baseboards or wall cadet heaters? Clallam County PUD can now pay a $1,500 incentive to help you switch to a ductless heat pump. This could save up to 50 percent of the energy used to heat your home. There’s more. Whether you have an electric furnace or heat pump, leaky ductwork is the equivalent of throwing hard-earned cash out the window. A majority of homes, regardless of age, have duct systems that waste energy and money. That’s why Clallam County PUD is running a duct testing and sealing program. Fixing leaky ductwork can save you around $90 a year. If you have the testing and duct sealing done by an approved PUD contractor, we will pay up to $500 of the cost. Often, Clallam County PUD’s incentive covers the full cost of the duct sealing and testing. By using one of our participating installers, you will be sure to get a heat pump that fits your home and is installed to run efficiently. And you can also still take advantage of the duct testing and sealing program. You’ll be happy you did. The conservation staff at Clallam County PUD is always looking for ways to make more programs available, as well as finding the most efficient methods to get those programs out to the most people. Most importantly, we want all of Clallam County PUD’s customers, residential, commercial and industrial alike; to know that we are here to help you with conservation planning and questions. Please go to our website, www.ClallamPUD.net or call us – (360) 565-3249 or (800) 542-7859 x249. 2431 E. Highway 101 • PO Box 1090 • Port Angeles, WA 98362

service organizations to lift, pull and carry,” Comeau said. The primary effort involves protecting the school’s hardwood basketball courts. Enormous vinyl mats are carefully placed and attached to the maple surface with a special adhesive tape to protect the finish. Mats go into the east gym on Thursday night and the older Roughrider gym gets a vinyl surface on Friday morning. Once the floor work is completed, professionals from GES Exposition Services start building booths, hanging curtains and rolling out carpets, while local electricians connect a series of long cables to provide each exhibitor with power. GES provides exhibition and event services in every major convention market across North America. They produce many of the world’s most recognized trade shows including IMTS, CONEXPO/CON-AGG, Consumer Electronics Show, National Association of Broadcasters, MAGIC, World Shoe Associates, National Restaurant Association and E3. GES serves more than 3,000 exhibitions and events annually. “The fact that we have teamed up with a

real professional outfit like GES is the reason why we can pull off this event with a reasonably small staff,” Comeau said. Peninsula Service Club volunteers and KONP staff move tables and chairs from the school’s cafeteria to the gymnasium to provide seating for the concession area. They also assist exhibitors in finding their booth space when they arrive at the high school. It’s a total effort that Comeau calls “a huge job that doesn’t get any smaller.” Workers toil late into the night Friday to have the venue ship-shape for the first visitors. Once Saturday morning rolls around, the KONP Home Show doors open for thousands of peninsula residents taking advantage of the free admission. KONP staff welcomes the event kickoff. “We can kind of relax because the show sort of takes care of itself,” Comeau said. “The exhibitors, that’s their time to shine — it’s all about them — and we’re just there as a caretaking role, to observe and be available.” GES is available to help during the show. “They anticipate problems before they happen in many cases and they meet us more than halfway to solve it,” Comeau said. The Home Show closes on Sunday at 4 p.m. and the cleanup work is just beginning. s The scene outside the gymnasiums becomes

almost chaotic, as most of the exhibitors begin dismantling their booths and loading up equipment for the trip home. It’s a steady flow of vendors with dollies and carts streaming through the exit doors, heading for limited loading space in the parking lot. Comeau noted, “People are in a hurry, exhibitors are tired and they just want to get loaded up and go home. Some of the local vendors have learned that it is easier to just leave the school, go out to dinner and relax for a while, then return later and be able to work a little more slowly.” After exhibitors are clear of the venue, GES employees begin their task of removing curtains, booth framework and carpeting. KONP staff and service club volunteers team up to pull up the huge vinyl floor mats, plus returning the tables and chairs to the school’s cafeteria. The west gymnasium must be cleared Sunday night in order to be ready for use by physical education students Monday morning. By Monday at noon, both Port Angeles High School gyms will be back to normal, floors swept and mopped, ready for bouncing basketballs and squeaking athletic shoes. BY DAN KARI KONP STAFF

Is your home vulnerable to burglary?

Is your home safe from burglars and thieves? Or are you courting them with obvious security lapses and poor planning when you’re away? More than 2 million homes were burglarized in the United States last year alone. Moreover, more than 60 percent of all residential burglaries took place during the day, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The average burglary results in a loss of more than $2,000 of property, not to mention the loss of peace of mind and security when you’re home. But a few simple precautions can keep your home safe while you’re away: • Lock your doors and windows. Burglars usually don’t have the fancy tools seen on television — pliers, screwdrivers and crowbars typically do the trick. Having strong locks on front doors and keeping ground-level windows locked when you’re not home are two easy ways to deter the average burglar. • Make sure your home is well lit. Better yet, use motion-sensing lights that come on when movement is detected. They’ll keep you from having to fumble your way to a dark door. Lights, indoors and out, also should be on a timer when you’re away. • Install wireless security cameras. Motion-sensing cameras with an Internet connection allow you to monitor your home while you’re away via any Internet browser. For example, some wireless IP network cameras send an alert to your phone or computer with a photograph when body heat, audio or motion is detected. They also allow users to view real-time video from anywhere in the world using a personalized secure web address provided for free. • Evaluate your home’s surroundings. Don’t inadvertently make it easy for burglars to hide. Keep landscaping neatly trimmed to eliminate hiding places around the house. And careless placement of tools in the backyard, such as ladder, can be used by the burglar to break-in. So be sure always to store tools properly and in secure locations. • Keep up appearances. Make sure to stop all newspaper deliveries and have the post office hold your mail when you are away. Also, keep your grass watered and cut, along with other landscaping if you are gone for an extended period. These simple tips and precautions should allow you to rest easier while away — and keep your home safe as well. (StatePoint)

Lighting tips to create home ambiance Are you looking for a way to spruce up your home but don’t want to spend a bundle? Consider your light bulbs and fixtures. Lighting can go a long way in creating ambiance in a home and often is cheaper than painting. Plus, it’s more functional than unnecessary knick-knacks cluttering your living spaces. Here are some lighting tips to create a welcoming atmosphere in your home: • First impressions count. Make your guests feel at home by using floodlights, which provide illumination across a wide area. And consider adding a light bulb dimming switch, which allows you to illuminate the entry but creates a lower level of light to help visitors adapt to sudden changes in light levels when coming in from outside. Floodlights also can create added drama in hallways, kitchens and guest rooms. • Add color. Looking for a subtle shift in the color of your living spaces? Light bulbs are available in a variety of color temperatures, from warm, soft white to cool, natural daylight. Each changes the look and feel of a room. You can filter out dull yellow rays produced by standard incandescent bulbs with CFL or halogen lights. Or use a special incandescent light to make colors “pop,” bringing out the vibrant colors and textures of fabrics and furniture that typically would go unnoticed.

• Cozy up in the kitchen. Often a main gathering place, the kitchen should be well lit for both cooking and entertaining. Create a cozy look using recessed downlights that also offer a well-lit work surface for creating those gourmet meals. Place them 6 to 8 feet apart for even illumination. • Let the dining room glitter, not glare. To achieve a welcoming ambience in the dining room, keep your chandelier dimmed. For extra sparkle, consider installing small recessed downlights on either side of the chandelier. If your dining room table, china cabinet or fixtures incorporate dull materials such as wood, pewter or wrought iron, coated bulbs offer a softer illumination that brings out the textures of these materials. And they’re offered in candelabra, globe and other shapes fitting for decorative applications. • Enhance brick and stone. Many of today’s home fireplaces incorporate stone and brick walls that can be highlighted with a wall-washing technique called “grazing” to showcase their great color and texture. Place recessed directional fixtures 6 to 8 inches away from the wall and 12 to 30 inches apart for a dramatic visual effect. (StatePoint)

OK, I will admit it … as a little girl I always dreamt of being a “super-star.” I frequently would move one of the dining room chairs out in to the family room. This chair became my “stage” and the jump rope in my hands instantly became my microphone. I am sure my mother would remember my own personal renditions of “Love Will Keep Us Together” by The Captain and Tennille and “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” by Leo Sayer. They always seemed to be part of my regular evening “set.” One might ask the host of KONP’s brand new COPELAND Saturday afternoon show if he too aspired to be a super-star. airing Saturday afternoons from noon-1 p.m. The show’s growing popularity already has extended the length from half an hour to an hour, and if that doesn’t show how well received this locally produced public affairs program is, we don’t know what else will! “In the Booth” is designed to bring a broad perspective of information on important issues to KONP’s listeners. The show focuses on state, regional and national issues but don’t be surprised when it delves into international issues too. Past guests include former Vice President Dick Cheney, Gov. Chris Gregoire, Dr. Walter Williams (an occasional guest host for the Rush Limbaugh Show), former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson, Congressman Jay Inslee, Attorney General Rob McKenna, and many more. Mike Howe is no radio rookie. He co-hosted a similar show in Fort Morgan, Colo., on KFTM and has been a guest on national and local radio programs across the country. With a professional and educational background in politics, Howe knows information is king and wants to bring that information to the listeners. The Olympic Peninsula now is where the Howe family calls home. After a brief hiatus from the airwaves, Howe is excited to be back on radio talking politics — his favorite topic. An accomplished freelance writer for a number of transportation, energy and news publications, he brings his political insight and expertise, along with his subtle sense of humor, to the airwaves of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula for all to enjoy! Howe says, “The opportunity to bring this show format to the KONP airwaves is an honor. I commit to bringing high quality guests to the listeners that will cover the topics that are of interest to them.” KONP is happy to add “In the Booth” to its Saturday line-up. The only thing we do want is a picture of him with spatula in hand, inside his tree house “studio” from 1975 as he interviews the President of the United States, also known as Rocko the dog. For more information about “In the Booth” and Mike Howe, go to www.michaelhoweshow.com and www.facebook.com/michaelhoweshow. BY JODY COPELAND, KONP STAFF
