KONP HOME SHOW 2011

Welcome

to the KONP HOME SHOW

It’s time again. It seems we just said goodbye to one of our most successful KONP Home Shows a year ago, but it’s time to welcome another show. We’re celebrating 29 years of KONP Home Shows and this one again will offer a wide variety of new exhibits plus many of your favorite returning vendors. We’ve come a long way from the humble Home Show beginnings in the Vern Burton gymnasium with leaky tents and just a handful of booths and exhibitors. Now we’re sporting three gymnasium levels full of displays and exhibits. We expect thousands of people to come through during the two ORTLOFF days of the show. We hope you’ll again find the KONP Home Show a show for living. We’ve tried to bring you a wide range of exhibits from buying a new home to outfitting your home, to improving your life. No matter what you’re looking to do with your home or in your life, I’m sure you’ll find the resources and ideas to get started (or finished) at the KONP Home Show. Once again I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor, Clallam County PUD No. 1. They continue to be an integral part of putting the show on for our community. The PUD’s partnership with KONP has helped the peninsula’s original exhibition for homes, home improvement and living grow and continue to be the premier event of its kind in the area. We hope to see all of you there at the KONP Home Show Feb. 26-27 at Port Angeles High School. And we hope you keep your radio tuned to AM 1450 and FM 102.1 to KONP! KONP HOME SHOW 2011

THANK YOU, EXHIBITORS! What is the key to a successful KONP Home Show? Wow, what a loaded question! There are so many elements that can lend to a truly successful show. Organizing, planning and scheduling are on the top of my list. But what is the one element that outshines them all? Our exhibitors … hands down. The KONP Home Show exhibitors take this fantastic weekend event very seriously. As a matter of fact, the day after the annual show our exhibitors are planning for the next year. Our two-day marketing and networking venue kicks off the new year, bringing new exhibits and innovative ideas to our entire county, which gives each exhibitor the opportunity to “strut their stuff.” The KONP staff takes their exhibitors’ best interests at heart. They are what have made our show a success for the past 29 years. Our show has been compared to other shows in Seattle, Tacoma and Victoria. While these shows may be larger and longer, they don’t have the attention to detail and small-town treatment that brings our exhibitors back year after year. So, hats off to each and every 2011 exhibitor. A warm welcome to our new participants and a huge thank you to all of you from the entire staff at KONP Radio!

Angeles Furniture

New exhibitors combine with veteran vendors to provide showgoers with a wealth of resources all in one venue. Upon setting foot in the East Gym, showgoers always look forward to the gorgeous décor that Angeles Furniture displays year after year. Its design team always has a ““room”” fill filledd withh ffurniture, llighting h and accent décor to show you how easily you can update your living space. people employed so they can support their families families. We are lo looking forward to a fantastic show this year and have Angeles Furniture and all of our local businesses to thank. See you all at the show! Jody Copeland, Sales and Marketing

As I prepare for my second

KONP Home Show, I have to wonder why wouldn’t a local business want to showcase its goods and services in front of thousands of potential customers? As I ponder this question, I have spoke to some local exhibitors that wouldn’t miss the opportunity. Ray Gruver at State Farm Insurance has been participating in the KONP Home for 28 years! Ray tells me, “We come back to the KONP Home Show every year because it is a great opportunity to see friends, neighbors and introduce ourselves to others, support a wonderful and KONP HOME SHOW 2011

valuable community event and help families better protect themselves and save money on personalized auto, home, life, health and business insurance.” Ray Gruver-State Farm Insurance has seven employees and has been at the same location, 210 E. Seventh St., for 29 years. Another local business that wouldn’t miss the opportunity to participate in this annual event is Bargain Warehouse. Stu Smith loves the excellent exposure to showcase his full-service furniture store to potential customers. Bargain Warehouse has been participating in the KONP Home Show for 14 years and features complete sofa, recliner, dining and bedroom sets. Bargain Warehouse has nine employees and has been serving the Olympic Peninsula at the same Port Angeles location for 15 years. I look forward to visiting with all of our Home Show exhibitors again this year! Tracy Swanson, Sales and Marketing

The KONP Home Show

has sprung up every February for 29 years and Frank and Judy Murr have been around for the past 17 of them. Ever since 1994, Frank and Judy have presented their company The Window & Door Shoppe at the show. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” says Frank Murr. “We get to see a lot of old friends, folks drop by to say ‘Hi.’ That’s what happens when you’ve been around the show for 17 years.” The Murrs have operated for 21 years in Poulsbo. “We opened up in a little 20- by 30foot garage and somehow we’re able to pay the rent on 8,000 square feet today.” Like everyone else, The Window & Door Shoppe has felt the effects of the sluggish economy. “I think things are getting better,” said Murr. “I believe the government stimulus was good for us, our manufacturers stepped up with rebates, the city and PUD — everyone’s working to try to stimulate this economy.” Murr said more consumers are seeking The Window & Door Shoppe for remodeling work and window replacement since new construction has slowed to a crawl in recent years. Whether for building or for home improvements, Murr is proud to bring the Andersen line of windows to the KONP Home Show. “I come back to the show with two goals goals, to create some new business for our business but also to remind local buyers that the Andersen products are available and they are affordable.”

The Window & Door Shoppe

The Window & Door Shoppe will anchor its exhibit in the East Gym at the show, in the same spot they’ve occupied all these years. Stan Comeau, Advertising Sales Manager/Production Director

KONP Home Show planning a year-round effort How does KONP organize and pull off the largest a annual exhibition event on the Olympic Peninsula, d despite having a staff of fewer than a dozen people? They prepare almost year-round and enlist the h of professional event planning specialists and lohelp c service club volunteers. cal “We love the Home Show and this year’s event will be b every bit as special as people have come to expect,” s KONP Sales Manager Stan Comeau. said Organization for this year’s 29th annual KONP Home H Show started last February — immediately foll lowing last year’s successful offering at Port Angeles H School. High Comeau noted, “It’s almost getting to be an ongoi process,” as staff teamed up to look at what went ing r right in 2010 and eyed possible improvements. Last summer, KONP sales and marketing speciali began contacting exhibitors, looking for those inists t terested in returning for the 2011 event, then marketi for replacement vendors to sell out the show. ing “It sounds terrible to say this, but we actually don’t w to have all of the same exhibitors back year after want y because you would essentially end up with the year

14

same show,” Comeau observed. While many stalwart local businesses have returned to the same booth locations at the Home Show, Comeau says KONP attempts to “keep the show fresh” with new faces, including many start-up business ventures each year, both from the local and Puget Sound areas. The transformation of the Port Angeles High School gymnasiums from athletic facility to Home Show venue actually starts on the Thursday night prior to the event. “That’s the manual labor part and we get lots of help from service organizations to lift, pull and carry,” Comeau said. The primary effort involves protecting the school’s hardwood basketball courts. Enormous vinyl mats are carefully placed and attached to the maple surface with a special adhesive tape to protect the finish. Mats go into the east gym on Thursday night and the older Roughrider gym gets a vinyl surface on Friday morning.

Once the floor work is completed, professionals from GES Exposition Services start building booths, hanging curtains and rolling out carpets, while local electricians connect a series of long cables to provide each exhibitor with power. GES provides exhibition and event services in every major convention market across North America. It produces many of the world’s most recognized trade shows including IMTS, CONEXPO/CON-AGG, Consumer Electronics Show, National Association of Broadcasters, MAGIC, World Shoe Associates, National Restaurant Association and E3. GES serves more than 3,000 exhibitions and events annually. “The fact that we have teamed up with a real professional outfit like GES is the reason why we can pull off this event with a reasonably small staff,” Comeau said. Peninsula Service Club volunteers and KONP staff move tables and chairs from the school’s cafeteria to the gymnasium to provide seating for the concession area. They also assist exhibitors in finding their booth space when they arrive at the high school. It’s a total effort that Comeau calls “a huge job that doesn’t get any smaller.” Workers toil late into the night Friday to have the venue shipshape for the first visitors. Once Saturday morning rolls around, the

KONP Home Show doors open for thousands of peninsula residents taking advantage of the free admission. KONP staff welcomes the event kick-off. “We can kind of relax because the show sort of takes care of itself,” Comeau said. “The exhibitors, that’s their time to shine — it’s all about

them — and we’re just there as a caretaking role, to observe and be available.” GES is available to help during the show. “They anticipate problems before they happen in many cases and they meet us more than halfway to solve it,” Comeau said. The Home Show closes on Sunday at 4 p.m. and the clean-up work is just beginning. The scene outside the gymnasiums becomes almost

chaotic, as most of the exhibitors begin dismantling their booths and loading up equipment for the trip home. It’s a steady flow of vendors with dollies and carts streaming through the exit doors, heading for limited loading space in the parking lot. “People are in a hurry, exhibitors are tired and they just want to get loaded up and go home,” Comeau said. “Some of the local vendors have learned that it is easier to just leave the school, go out to dinner and relax for a while, then return later and be able to work a little more slowly.” After exhibitors are clear of the venue, GES begins its task of removing curtains, booth framework and carpeting. KONP staff and Service Club volunteers team up to pull up the huge vinyl floor mats, plus returning the tables and chairs to the school’s cafeteria. The west gymnasium must be cleared Sunday night in order to be ready for use by physical education students Monday morning. By Monday noon, both Port Angeles High School gyms will be back to normal, floors swept and mopped, ready for bouncing basketballs and squeaking athletic shoes. Comeau and company already will be scheming for 2012 — and the 30th annual KONP Home Show. Dan Kari, KONP staff

Energy efficiency . . . A utility/ community partnership Washington’s Energy Independence Act (I-937) did more than mandate utilities meet new renewable energy requirements; it also mandates new conservation requirements. Essentially, the PUD must take a look at what its potential conservation efforts could attain over the next 10 years. Then, it must meet one-fifth of that potential within a 2-year period. The rules have changed for how conservation efforts can be achieved, too. In the past, one of the ways the PUD had met its conservation goals was through the distribution of Compact Fluorescent Lights. However, 2011 is the last year that CFLs count toward the PUD’s conservation efforts. Making conservation even more interesting is that new conservation goals double in 2012 and only go up from there. As important as conservation

is today and as successful as the PUD and its customers have been with conservation to date, beginning in 2012, PUD customers will see an even greater push for conservation. The exciting part of this is that the existing partnership between the PUD and its customers will become even more important as we work to meet the new conservation mandates. For more information on how you can partner with the PUD on conservation efforts, visit www. clallampud.net.

Thanks Kiwanians! Those attending the show this year will no doubt notice dozens of men and women scurrying about with matching blue T-shirts. They are the energetic, hard-working, enthusiastic members of the Port Angeles Kiwanis Club who play such a vital Home Show role each year. The Kiwanis relationship with the KONP Home Show began years ago, when our small radio station staff decided to stop killing ourselves and get some help. Ever since, the Kiwanis Club members show up by the dozens to assist with setting up and tearing down the show. In return for several hours of manual labor, KONP makes a donation to the club. This year, for the fifth year in a row (I think), the Kiwanians also will run the concessions for the Home Show. The club serves up the munchies and keeps all the proceeds to use toward the club’s yearround good works. Now, this is where I have to come clean — in the interest of “full disclosure.” I have a strong bias toward these people, as I am a member of the club and have seen

firsthand their willingness to give and do for others. This weekend, virtually every member of the club will work at least one shift in order for the club to fulfill its tasks. Many members will spend most of the weekend at the high school doing more than their share. The Kiwanis Club will use the money raised to offer scholarships to graduating seniors, to help the Northwest Kiwanis Camp near Chimacum for children with severe special needs, to fund “Kids Fest” in March, support the “Dream Playground” and so much more. So this weekend at the Home Show, have a hot dog (or two) and a pop at the concessions stand. Heck, leave ’em a nice tip. You can be sure the Kiwanians will put that money to good use. Just like the Kiwanians can be sure we’ll put them to work. Stan Comeau, CRMC and Sales Manager

KONP HOME SHOW 2011

The Money Pit As long as there have been homes, there have been home repairs. If you know when your home was built however, there are problems common to that era that can be avoided. While home construction has changed quite dramatically over the years, every era of home construction had its strengths and weaknesses. For example, old homes offer character and charm that is rarely reproduced in modern construction. But, old homes also are drafty and leaky. Newer homes might offer energy efficiency but they go up so quickly that workmanship often falls by the wayside. Any way you look at it, the

KONP HOME SHOW 2011

27

home repairs add up. Here’s how to know what home repairs might be needed by house age:

1900-1940 Green lumber: Between 1900-1920, it was common to use lumber that came right from the saw mill as the kiln drying process had not been developed. As a result, this lumber shrank, twisted and turned, resulting in some pretty interesting wall and floor shapes. Knob and tube wiring: Around 1920, it became standard practice to install electrical wiring in homes. This wiring was called knob and tube because it was strung alongside wooden framing on ceramic knobs and run through lumber via ceramic tubes. If you spot this in your home, get rid of it. Knob and tube wiring is unsafe for a bunch of reasons and should be replaced completely. Steel plumbing pipes: Used from 1900 until around 1940, steel plumbing pipes worked well for the first 20 years or so, then they began to rust shut much like a clogged artery. If the reduced water pressure doesn’t force you to change them, the bursting pipes will. If you spot steel pipes in your house, you might notice white spots on the outside. Don’t touch them. The white stuff is a mineral salt deposit that got left behind by the leak which you’ll soon rediscover once the mineral scab falls away! Also look for uninsulated walls, unlined chimneys and issues associated with plaster on wood lath. Asbestos issues also can be a problem, as this was the insulation of choice for heating systems up until the 1940s.

1940-1960 Undersized electrical systems: Although the wiring of the 1940s was a bit safer than knob and tube wiring of the 1920s, it still was plagued by lots of problems. Small electrical systems of less than 100 amps were common, as were two-prong ungrounded outlets. If you have some of this wiring still running parts of your home, add upgrades to your to-do list of home repairs and call your local electrician. Drafty windows: Inefficient steel and aluminum windows were common in this era. While seen at the time as a modern upgrade to ironweighted wood windows that swelled and rotted, time has proved these windows to be just as problematic. Steel windows rust badly and unless they have rusted shut, are probably very drafty. Asbestos ceiling tile and textured ceilings: Remember those old 12-inch by 12-inch ceiling tiles that you may have grown up with? Chances are they contained asbestos.

1960-1980 Aluminum wiring: In 1962, a new era of electrical code made homes a lot safer than they ever had been before, with one single lapse in judgment. This same code allowed for aluminum branch circuit wiring. Used between 1964-1973, this wiring had the nasty little habit of catching on fire and took many a home down before it was pulled out of service. If your home was built in these years, have an electrician check to determine if you have any aluminum branch circuits. If so, home repairs may be needed. Poor roof ventilation: In the 1960s and through to the mid-1970s, attics typically did not have enough ventilation. As a result, moisture build-up over all those years caused the roof sheathing eventually to rot away. Fogged window and door glass: Insulated glass was becoming the norm as energy prices rose in the 1970s. Unfortunately, manufacturers didn’t quite have it down right just yet and as a resulted, the seals be-

28

tween the glass failed, leaving windows and doors fogged. If you spot old windows around your home that have bad seals, replace them to restore energy efficiency.

1980-Present Old appliances: Many house components have life cycles that run from 15-20 years. These include appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, washers, dryers and dishwashers. By plotting the age of your appliances, you’ll have a good idea when the home repairs should be expected. Cathedral ceilings: Over-sized cathedral ceilings that did not heat or cool well were common in this era. If you have one that looks good but wreaks havoc on your heating or cooling bills, you may be able to install ceiling fans that would blow hot air down in the summer and pull cold air up in the winter. Fiberglass roof shingles: Around 1980 or so, roofing manufacturers began changing the way they made roof shingles by replacing the organic mat that held the asphalt with a fiberglass mat. Originally this seemed like good idea but once many of these fiberglass shingles got to be 5-10 years old, they began to crack, rip and tear and needed to be replaced. If you have a home with fiberglass shingles, have it inspected periodically. The best way to tackle this home repair is via a ladder at the roof edge as the cracks are hard to spot from the ground. Yes — they don’t build them like they used to. But if you know when your house was built, this will give you a good idea of what home repairs you might need to do. by Tom Kraeutler, host of The Money Pit Radio show heard on KONP KONP HOME SHOW 2011

As important as conservation is today and as successful as the PUD and its customers have been with conservation to date, beginning in 2012, PUD customers will see an even greater push for conservation. The exciting part of this is that the existing partnership between the PUD and its customers will become even more important as we work to meet the new conservation mandates.
