KSQM
KSQM, Sequim’s all-volunteer, nonprofit radio station at 91.5 FM, is a new sponsor of the Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo in 2010. Sequim’s first radio station went on the air in December 2008, serving Sequim and the Dungeness Valley by broadcasting local weather reports, highway and road conditions, school closures and schedule changes, bridge closures, changes in ferry boat, air carrier and transit schedules. The station’s format includes music from the 1940s-1960s seven days a week plus taped shows from Clallam County Master Gardeners and fishing guide/humorist Pat Neal. KSQM supports other nonprofit organizations with announcements of their activities. One of listeners’ favorites is “Musical Matinee” with tunes from Broadway and Hollywood musicals. As of its first anniversary last December, its volunteer staff had 15 trained DJs, including Police Chief Robert Spinks, 20 receptionists, eight newsroom writers and several others who do miscellaneous tasks. KSQM is dependent upon listener donations and underwriting from local businesses. Its mission is to broadcast quality radio programming that informs, educates, entertains, involves and inspires the people living in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley ... and beyond. Through its Web site, www.ksqmfm.com, KSQM is streamed online in 118 countries and 1,400 cities. KSQM will be broadcasting live from Expo on Saturday and Sunday. Sequim Community Broadcasting owns and operates KSQM and is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, governed by a board of directors. Officers are Rick Perry, president; Jeff Bankston, vice president; and Lynda Perry, secretary.

Hardware stores and much more The divisions of Lumber Traders Inc., continue to grow, offering more and more supplies for contractors, landscapers and do-ityourselfers on the peninsula. Anchored by Angeles Millwork & Lumber Company, now more than a century old, also under the Lumber Traders umbrella are Hartnagel Building Supply, The Showcase and The Quarry, all in Port Angeles. Hartnagels will mark its 50th anniversary in June and Donna Pacheco, advertising and promotions coordinator, said the company is excited to have Bill Matthews on board as the store’s new general manager. “We’re redesigning the store with more emphasis on roofing, paint and hardware products,” Matthews said. “We are rebuilding our exterior deck display to showcase great new products and increasing our inventory in fencing.” Matthews, who has 30 years experience in the lumber/building business, said Hartnagels will unveil its new look iin time for its anniversary. “Traffic and awareness are suddenly building at The Showcase,” Pacheco said. “Customers are surprised at our variety and selection w when they stop in for the first time. And the addition of two unfinished f furniture lines has been an overnight success.” The store is a design center f cabinets, countertops, for doors, windows, hardware and accessories. Pacheco said the biggest
thing recently has been The Quarry’s expansion from Hartnagels to The Showcase with a 750-square-foot showroom displaying natural and cultured stone and pavers available. The large inventory yard stocks an extensive supply of flagstone, ledgestone, slate, pavers, wall block, boulders, slab steps and risers. Its grand opening begins at 10 a.m. March 20 with a ribbon-cutting followed by a demonstration at 10:30 a.m. on how to lay a circle paver kit and at 1 p.m. on how to assemble a circle fire pit. Customers can discuss their masonry needs with hardscape division manager Greg Downing, who has more than 20 years experience in the business, or other knowledgeable employees. Pacheco said Donna Hoyt, The Showcase’s window specialist, keeps customers up to date on weatherization rebate programs for window replacement offered by the city of Port Angeles and Clallam PUD, plus vendor rebates and federal tax credits. The Showcase will be hosting a “Smart Home Seminar” on March 24, presented by Milgard Windows, which will detail the different types and styles of windows, UV protection and why it’s important, and what homeowners should expect when replacing their windows. First Federal builds partnerships “We are lending,” said Teri Ward, residential loan manager at First Federal in Port Angeles. “There’s a misconception out there that banks aren’t lending but First Federal is still in the business of making good loans for home purchases, construction and remodeling, to name a few.” The locally owned bank offers a variety of mortgage products including adjustable rate, fixed rate and home equity loans. “We really listen to the customer and talk about their needs before we make any recommendations,” she said. For remodeling projects, the type of loan can depend on the scope of the project, which is why communication between the customer and loan officer is so important. First Federal’s loan officers work diligently to assist customers throughout the lending process. “First Federal is all about building relationships. We firmly believe that when someone stops in to inquire about a loan, they’ll want to bring their entire banking relationship to us because of our great customer service and products,” said Ward. First Federal has been partnering with the community for 87 years. A business and banking leader, the bank is intent on remaining a strong, forward-thinking financial institution. Eight branches strong, First Federal serves Clallam and Jefferson counties from Forks to Port Townsend. Rooted in the values and traditions that have strengthened area communities, the bank is committed to provide the best in financial services to the people living on the Olympic Peninsula. “Visit the bank’s Web site at www. ourfirstfed.com, call 417-3204 or 800-800-1577 or stop by one of our convenient branches and experience the best in customer service and banking products. Geothermal making gains
With 1.2 million units in residential and commercial use nationwide, geothermal or ground source heat pumps are saving consumers millions in energy costs annually. As a renewable, sustainable energy alternative, properly sized and installed systems can save households and businesses from 30 percent to 70 percent in their electricity or carbon fuel costs when compared to other heating sources — and as a bonus, ground source heat pumps provide air conditioning, dehumidification and domestic hot water, too. Between 1990 and 2010, as more companies manufactured geothermal systems, more installers were professionally trained and costs became more affordable, homeowners f locked to geothermal systems, especially in states where summer and winter temperatures, like a pendulum, swing from one extreme to another. “The ‘guts’ of ground source heat pumps are like those of a standard refrigerator that also can run backwards (to heat). High efficiency results from taking only one unit of electricity from the grid to run its compressor, its blower and its circulation pumps,” said John Geyer, owner of John Geyer & Associates, Inc., in Vancouver, Wash. “The rest of the heat is collected from the ground and delivered into your house when you’re heating or from your house to the ground when you’re cooling. It’s not uncommon to heat or cool a 2,000-squarefoot house for about a dollar a day or $400 per year. So three-quarters of the energy used, in fact, is renewable and sustainable,” Geyer said. The system takes advantage of the earth’s nearly constant temperature year-round six or more feet below ground. Depending on location, it can range from 45 degrees to 70 degrees; local averages are near 52 degrees. According to the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, “… water or
antifreeze solution is circulated through plastic pipes ( loops) buried beneath the earth’s surface. During the winter, the fluid collects heat from the earth and carries it through the system and into the building. During the summer, the system reverses itself to cool the building by pulling heat from the building, carrying it through the system and placing it in the ground. This process can produce free hot water in the summer and delivers substantial hot water savings in the winter.” The real value behind geothermal systems is it takes much less energy in the winter to extract heat from 50-degree soil and raise it to a comfortable indoor temperature than from icy outdoor air. In the summer, the cool ground absorbs and dissipates heat much more efficiently than an air conditioner pulling in warm air to cool it. “I view a geothermal heat pump as a practical, renewable energy that will work nearly anywhere for anyone,” said Geyer, who has been a geothermal consultant, designer and trainer for 15 years. “When properly designed and installed, geothermal heat pumps run for 30-plus years with scarcely more maintenance than a kitchen refrigerator.” Even though Western Washington doesn’t see sustained frigid temperatures like the Midwest and East, systems are “every bit as efficient here,” Geyer said. “I’d guess there are between 2,000 and 3,000 geothermal heat pump systems in the state. The market continues to grow 20 percent a year but the West is trailing the Midwest and East by 20 years in development — it’s now a $1.2 billion industry in the U.S. and about 2 percent of the heating market.” For more information, see www. geoexhange.org, www.igshpa.okstate. edu/ or contact John Geyer & Associates at 360-882-5050. — Patricia Morrison Coate

Harnessing the wind
Renewable energy for future
Humans have been awed by the power of H wind since the beginning of time. Cultures from fr om Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, Asia, Meso Mesoamerica and the Indian subcontinent have personified and worshiped wind gods in th their mythologies. But there is no magic to the p power of wind — only science. The sun’s radia radiation heats the Earth at different rates over differ different topographies. Hot air rises and cold air is pul pulled in to replace it — the constant changes i atmospheric in atm pressure cause wind. M Moving air has mass and it can be harnessed fo or m for mechanical force with windmills or to make elect electricity with wind turbines. Windmills were sstandard tand on farmsteads to pump well water and grind g grain from the 1870s-1940s before rural electric cooperatives strung their lines. Once farmers had electricity, motors replaced wind windmills. W Wind turbines capture the wind worldwide and convert it into electricity. Two turbine ddesigns de sigg exist: the horizontal axis or propellertype ty p and the vertical axis or eggbeater-type. Wind turns fiberglass rotors, which are con co nn connected to a drive train, a generator and a util ut ilit it grid. Data about the entire process is utility track k by computer. Towers may be several tracked hund hu nd feet high to best capture the ambient hundred wind wind. A turbine’s capacity is measured in kilow kilowatt-hours. According to the American Wind Ener En ergg Association, a 5 megawatt turbine can Energy prod produce more than 15 million kWh in a year, enou enough to power 1,400 households. The average hous household uses 10,000 kWh annually. N Nearly all of the “utility scale” wind turbines are h horizontal. Although Western Washington doesn doesn’t have constant stream winds required for tturbines, east of the Cascades winds are stead steady and strong enough to power wind farms, consi consisting of dozens or hundreds of turbines. Ac According to the AWEA, Washington moved from fifth to fourth in ranking of megawatts insta installed. For 2009, in total generating capacity, Texa Texas led, followed by Iowa, California and Minn Minnesota. AWEA figures state U.S. wind turbine powe power will eliminate 62 million tons of carbon dioxi dioxide and conserve 20 billion gallons of water
in conventional power plants. Compared to other ways of generating electricity, such as coal plants, wind turbines leave a small ecological footprint. Renewable energy companies lease sites from landowners who can continue using their acres for farming or ranching. Not until the fuel crisis of 1973 did Americans begin thinking about solar and wind energy but once it had passed, the national fervor for renewable fuels declined. However, by the 1980s and 1990s, wind turbine development allowed forward-thinking manufacturers to erect a wind turbine or two to generate all of their plant’s electricity and then some. They sold the excess to their local utility, which had the “effect” of rolling their meters backward. Within a decade, investors began supporting wind turbine technology and in 2009, the federal government came on board with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to spur installation and manufacturing. Wind power has the capacity to create thousands of American jobs. According to the AWEA, since 2005, hundreds of billions have been invested and in 2008 alone, 35,000 jobs were created in wind turbine installation and manufacturing. Even in this stagnant economy, the wind power industry is making gains as it requires well-trained technicians to install and maintain wind turbines. The International Air and Hospitality Academy in Vancouver, Wash., saw the demand for qualified technicians and in July 2009, established the Northwest Renewable Energy Institute, which offers a six-month wind turbine technician program. After graduating, students can expect to secure professional, family wage jobs. The curriculum is organized into these categories: • Introduction to Wind • Electrical • Mechanical • Electronics • Hydraulics • Metallurgy/Torque and Tensioning
Topics include an industry overview, safety practices, rigging, technical writing, electrical systems, vibration analysis, metals and their properties and employment preparation. According to its Web site at www.nw-rei.com, “Students can expect an innovative approach to learning that will include classroom, computerbased and hands-on training. Our green energy training programs will teach students the technical skills necessary to service, repair and maintain the demanding requirements of wind turbines. “Students will become familiar with the basic concepts of rigging, multi-meters, AC/DC electrical systems, hydraulics, the techniques of computerized data collection, utilize solar energy training and more. Upon completion of this program students will understand the need to follow industry critical safety requirements. Students also will be able to confidently demonstrate their newly developed skills. Graduates of this program will be qualified for entry-level positions as wind turbine technicians.” — Patricia Morrison Coate

Seizing on solar energy Port Townsend leads the way
Made-in-Washington solar modules are available, manufactured by Silicon-Energy of Arlington. Photos by Power Trip Energy Corporation
When it comes to embracing solar energy, by population the Port Townsend area bests Seattle for the most solar usage per capita in Washington. That’s one solar array (module) tied to the grid for every 294 people living in Jefferson County. Seattle has one per every 2,789 people. Port Townsend was honored as “Solar City of the Year” at the Northwest Solar Center summit at Shoreline Community College in October 2009. Its electric utility is Puget Sound Energy. “What makes Port Townsend so special is that people here are not only vocal activists, they also become the change they want to see,” said Andy Cochrane, president of Power Trip Energy Corporation. “If we want to live in a solar-powered community, we have to start by living in solarpowered houses.” “Our blue hole, from Port Townsend to Sequim, is about having good sunshine, people who want solar and installers who can do the work,” said Jeff Randall, Cochrane’s colleague, who designs and sells solar systems through the Port Townsend-based general and electrical contractor. “Ever more solar is going into the area. Port Townsend and Sequim are being recognized as the solar centers of Washington.” With the recession hitting the building industry hard, it may be surprising to hear, Randall said, that the past year has been Power Trip’s “best ever” for solar design, sales and installation, with 40 new systems in 2009. “The solar sector is part of a new economy. With the recession, there have been reductions in global demand for solar photovoltaic, especially in Europe, so we saw prices drop 25 percent to 35 percent on solar modules,” Randall said. “Solar is one of the few energy sources that continues to become more affordable every year.”

NPBA Expo 2010 • Typically a system consists of a number of solar modules, containing scores of silicon crystal solar cells, which are wired together to form a solar array, that generates electricity that’s fed into an inverter. The inverter makes the current usable by the home or business with the excess power fed back to the utility. The solar modules can be roof-mounted or freestanding on a pole that’s fixed or follows the sun for the best solar saturation. The beauty of solar is that when the system produces more power than it uses, the power flows back into the utilities’ grid. This process is called “net metering” and for each month that an eligible solar customer produces more energy than is expended, a credit will appear on his or her bill. “Solar energy is invested back into the economy — we install an array every week,” Randall said. Utilities, banks and cities recognize the importance of creating a solar network, one house or business at a time, and offer loans around 4 percent for solar array systems. A large part of Randall’s job is educating the public about the advantages of solar living and he will give a presentation at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in Area #1. – Patricia Morrison Coate

Recycle, reduce, reuse Built Green directory shows how Construction waste puts a burden on landfi lls across the nation. To reduce that impact locally, Built Green of Clallam County has published a recycling directory, not just for contractors but for the public, too. According to Garret DelaBarre, steering committee chair and owner of DelaBarre Construction, the driving force behind the director y has been the count y ’s Department of Community Development. It applied for and received a grant forconstruction waste management through the state Department of Ecology that detailed the scope of work mandated by the grant. Community Development administers the grant for Built Green of Clallam County and the latter carries out the

grant’s scope of work. “We partnered with Sequim and Port Angeles to create solutions for construction waste and worked with other jurisdictions to find out what they were doing to best handle it,” DelaBarre said. Fourteen percent of the annual debris going into the Port Angeles Transfer Station is construction waste. Built Green is asking all contractors in Clallam County to develop construction/ demolition/land clearing strategies before they build. “We like keeping most of our organic recycling on site — the more we can let it be where it is, the better,” DelaBarre said, regarding site

clearing — for example, mulching on site for erosion control. “ We just completed the 2010 Recycling Directory and, depending on the type of material, it tells where to take waste for disposal. The directory is available to the public at the NPBA Expo and every possible location that makes it accessible to the public,” DelaBarre said. “Our thing is getting people to think about recycling. Basically everything can be recycled if you look hard and far enough to handle it.” To encourage recycling by everyone, the directory lists local recyclers for household goods, from antifreeze to yard waste. The grant’s goal was to reduce construction waste going in the Port Angeles landfi ll by 10 percent in 2009, approximately 5,775 tons. “We’re hoping to reduce the total tonnage of construction waste received at the transfer station by 11,550 tons for 2010,” said DelaBarre, an increase to 15 percent. In accordance with the grant provisions, this year Built Green will develop workshops for local businesses, government and not-for-profit stakeholders on construction/ demolition/land-clearing waste reduction and create strategies for CDL waste management. “For me as a contractor, to be involved with Built Green and its mission is very much an honor,” DelaBarre said. “When we reuse, we win. That is the goal.” – Patricia Morrison Coate

seal silent leaks Did you know that running your home’s heating or cooling system with leaky duct work is like running it with the windows open?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homes with uninsulated leaky ducts in unheated spaces attics, crawl spaces, etc.), could be losing up to 60 percent of heated air before it even reaches the registers. (attics, The good news is your PUD’s no/low-cost Performance Tested Comfort System (PTCS) duct-sealing program seals those leaks, increases the efficiency of your heating system, increases home comfort, reduces heating costs and conserves resources. Our duct-sealing program incentives range from $350-$750, depending upon the type of home, heating system and PUD service area. Through this program, a bonded, participating installer, following strict PTCS duct-sealing procedures, will evaluate, properly seal and test your home’s duct system to ensure optimal performance. Some participating installers have opted to do PTCS duct-sealing jobs for the incentive amount, thereby making the job free to customers, while other participating installers may charge more. As with all of its weatherization and heating incentive programs, PUD recommends obtaining a few bids to maximize your options. Just because it’s a new system, doesn’t mean it’s leak-free. To ensure that you’ll be getting maximum warmth and efficiency from your significant investment in a new furnace and/or heat pump, it’s especially important to request PTCS duct-sealing and “commissioning” at the time of installation. To learn more about this no/low-cost energy-saving program, visit the PUD Web site at www.clallampud.net/conservation) or call 565-3249 or 800-542-7859 x249. — Shoshanah Wright, Clallam County PUD

CFLs: Lighting the way to a brighter tomorrow Clallam County PUD is committed to helping our customers effectively manage and reduce energy costs. One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to save energy is to replace incandescent light bulbs with high-quality, high-efficiency long-lasting ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. SAVES MONEY
SAVES ENERGY
Did you know that household lighting accounts for up to 20 percent of the energy use in American homes? By replacing the five most frequently used incandescent bulbs in your home with CFLs, you can lower your household lighting costs substantially. Given their significantly lower energy and replacement costs, ENERGY STAR CFLs pay for themselves. Start saving today bby purchasing discounted CFLs from local participating CChange a Light, Change a World vendors.
Watt for watt, ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs use 75 percent less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light. Save energy, save money, save time: Change a light, change the world. 15,000 hours. One CFL bulb can outlast up to 15 incandescent bulbs, which makes CFL bulbs an ideal choice for hard-toreach sockets. With CFLs, burned-out bulb changes are few and far between, so you’ll be climbing step ladders less often!
HIGH QUALITY CFLs have come a long way in the past 10 years. Today’s CFL bulbs use electronic ballasts that illuminate immediately and do not fl icker or buzz. CFL bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR rating have been tested to meet stringent performance criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. CFLs 101: Here are a few terms to know when purchasing ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs ♦ Watt: The amount of energy required to power the bulb.
Watt for watt, CFLs use 75-percent fewer watts than their incandescent bulb equivalents to produce the same amount of light. ♦ Lumens: The amount of light that a bulb puts out. To produce 1,600 lumens, a CFL bulb only needs 23 watts whereas an incandescent bulb would need 100 watts. ♦ Color temperature: Where lighting is concerned, “temperature” (measured in degrees Kelvin, “K”) doesn’t refer to heat but rather the color quality of the light. ht. For warm-toned CFLs that mimic conventional al incandescent bulbs, choose a 2700K or lower colorr temperature. For daylight orr cool-toned CFLs for task areas, eas, choose a CFL rated 3,500K or higher. igher.

But unlike most products, choosing higher-quality home services from Wave Broadband doesn’t mean you’ll be paying a premium. 1. Energy-efficient homes
t o H 10 s d n e Tr ines, By Andy H
6. Storage space
As energy prices continue to rise, it is a wise choice to use materials that can save it. Not only are many current materials designed to give better efficiency, they also are “green.”

For the past few decades, homes have not taken advantage of storage space in the attic but attic storage space is back with storage trusses. Walk-in closets and built-in cabinets are other places to store things you need to get to easily.
7. Outdoor living spaces Outdoor kitchens are the must-have for those who love to be outside. Add an outdoor TV niche for you diehard outdoorsy types. Don’t forget that wood-fired pizza oven for the outdoor entertainer who wants to be the talk of the neighborhood …. And not in a bad way!
2. Larger windows Not only for view but for light. Large windows have not been used as frequently because of energy loss. With new low-E windows, the amount of energy loss is reduced dramatically.
8. High-end features Appliances that only were seen in very high-end homes are becoming more prominent in mid-grade homes. Of course, you need to have a retreat to get away from it all and what better place than your spainspired bathroom suite.
3. Accessible plans
Homebuyers, especially those who are aging, will want to look into having a home that can grow old with them. You may want to look into having your home built by a CAPS (certified aging in place specialist) builder.
9. Entertainment room
4. Larger garages
10. Pet amenities
Make room for the toys!
Let’s not forget about our animals — but what a pain to clean the litter box. Your pet friendly area will be the place for your cat’s toilet, self-flushing of course. Don’t worry about letting out the dogs — they can go on their own — your automatic pet door is like a garage door for your pet that only will open for the pet who has the collar key.
Sometimes called media room, this is your other room to get away from it all. Opt for stepped seating with vibrating seats and floors that “float” for the full effect of your subwoofer. When the ground moves in your movie, your theater’s floor will, too. Sound-reducing materials confine movie audio to the theater.
5. Smaller homes Homebuyers are choosing more options in a smaller footprint and are looking to have higher quality features rather than large rooms.

Hand-crafting kitchens As a Sequim business since 1997, Bliemeisters’ Wood Works, Inc. has completed many quality residential and commercial cabinet projects but also supports the community as a sponsor of the NPBA Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo. Owners Darrell and Laurie Joslin and the Bliemeisters’ crew have provided birdhouses for children to assemble at the Expo for the past several years. After some refinement, the Bliemeisters’ crew has perfected the fabrication process for the birdhouses. They take care in ensuring that the houses are easily assembled and safe for youngsters to handle. “Our hope is that the parents as well as the kids enjoy the time spent together — all of us realize how important family moments are,” said Darrell Joslin.” We truly enjoy putting this project together for the Expo because of the parent/child involvement.” “The fun part of the business is all the possibilities available to people for their homes,” said Laurie Joslin. “From traditional to ultra-modern, from simple lines to furniture-inspired cabinetry, I enjoy showing our customers the many options.” They welcome requests for unusual counter shapes and innovative arrangements including solid-surface sinks and the new vessel sinks. And they
offer an incredible range of hardware to carry through on your creative plan. Bliemeisters’ offers a variety of door styles, wood types and stains displayed in their customer showroom.
