The 2010 Expo registration process is in full swing. Already 39 exhibitors have registered, reserving more than 45 booths with more registrations coming in almost daily. Demonstrations have been set by a number of exhibitors with topics that are sure to be of primary interest to homeowners at all levels, as well as general and subcontractors. Rated as one of the most professional shows many of the vendors have attended, the Expo anticipates a sellout in early January. Now is the time to be thinking about completing the registration form in order to stake out your booth at the Expo. Recovery is on its
way and the Expo can be your springboard to meeting the public’s needs. If maintaining a booth is not an option, think sponsorship. There is no better return on your advertising dollar than investing in a sponsorship opportunity. Whether you can afford $50, $100, $500, $5,000 or more, there is a sponsorship to fit your budget. Legislative preview In early December, the Legislature came to Olympia to hear updates on potential issues for the 2010 session. Work sessions on unemployment, lending practices and small business, healThcare and employer leave policies provided some outlook about what our members may face next session. BIAW lobbyists met with Democratic and Republican legislators to discuss the dire condition of home building and legislative

options for improving the housing economy. The House Commerce and Labor Committee conducted a work session on the Department of Labor and Industries’ retrospective rating program. Labor unions testified in favor of changes to the program which would result in its demise. Business representatives testified about changes to the program which have cut refunds in half and threaten the viability of retro. Democrats on the committee demonstrated a clear interest in moving retro legislation in 2010. BIAW, working with other business organizations, will fight harmful retro legislation. The legislative session begins Jan. 11.
Important Notice Resellers Permit The old “resale certificate” process ends Dec. 31, 2009. In order to continue not paying tax at point of purchase for items and materials to be included in your projects, you now are required to have a “resellers permit” by Jan. 1, 2010. The Department of Revenue will be mailing the paperwork to all registered contractors beginning in September. Do not delay in responding to this paperwork so you will have the proper “resellers permit” by Jan. 1, 2010.

Future Builders House There is a reason for blueprints By Dan Peacock, Construction Superintendent Construction on house #10 is on schedule. The exterior walls have been completed and just a few of the interior walls remain to be finished. As one visitor commented last week, “It is starting to look like a house.” Our goal has been to get the structure ready for truss delivery on Dec. 10. Not only have the students worked hard to get us ready, but we also have had the help of Tim Fraser with J.P. Cabinets and Craig Hoffman, a former F.B. graduate home for Thanksgiving break from WSU. Many thanks to both as well as to our regular volunteer, Mike Martineau; your help is really appreciated. It now looks like a roof may very well be in place before Christmas break. Samuel Rodman had been participating at several of the Building Connections events throughout the year. He appeared to be enjoying himself along with his brother, Kevin. Both are with Eden Excavating, which joined NPBA in October 2007 and was sponsored by Roger Wheeler of RJ Services. After finding bags of gold tied with a doubloon, looking an awful lot like President Tracy Gudgel, the treasure hunt sponsored by Peninsula Mortgage paid off big time for Samuel. R313 International Residential Code — Smoke Alarms When more than one smoke alarm is required to be installed within an individual dwelling unit, the alarm devices shall be interconnected in such a manner that the actuation of one alarm will activate all of the alarms in the dwelling unit.
