America’s Finest ★ cue s e W r e h t o t

hether you’ve been gone for 30 minutes or three months, the shock and panic is the same. Water squishing under your feet or sloshing from one room to the next is a true home disaster. Along with your insurance company, America’s Finest can make it all better. “We are a 24-hour emergency service,” said co-owner Robert Bourns. “We have two mounted carpet cleaning trucks and an emergency response trailer with all the dehumidifiers, fans, air scrubbers, etc.” The company has an office just outside of Sequim on U.S. Highway 101. It serves Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties for commercial, residential and emergency cleaning services. Bourns, co-owner Sean Ryan and their staff of five deal with the destructive power of water daily, from sewage backups, to broken pipes, to washers, toilets and dishwashers overflowing. “The 24-hour emergency service is the crux of our business and we like to take a job from beginning to end. A big part of our job is to restore the customer’s home to its pre-condition loss state,” Bourns said. The company also specializes in recovery from smoke damage, from getting rid of its pungent odor to particulate removal, and works closely with customers and their insurance companies. “On one job, a person had thousands of books and we cleaned each one,” Bourns said. Sequim resident Stan Gilliam established the business in 1993 as a carpet cleaning company and soon branched out into a water, fire and smoke restoration service. “Stan is very experienced and works closely with us,” Bourns said. “He’s our on-hand expert consultant.” Bourns explained how employees typically go about attacking soggy flooring and drywall, which acts as a wick.

“When we come in to a water situation, we use a moisture meter and read it for the walls, floors and carpet and ceiling sometimes. We also take a reading for humidity and temperature. Once that’s done, we have to figure out if the carpet needs to be pulled up and the pad removed to dry out the area,” Bourn said. “I’ve gone into situations from half an inch to 5 inches deep. Sometimes the flooring and drywall can be saved and sometimes not.” Employees pull out as much water as they can with the super vacs and then bring in behemoth fans and dehumidifiers. “With drywall, we make a hole and dry the inside wall cavity (with blowers), restore the drywall and paint it,” Bourn said. The process usually takes two or three days to dissipate the moisture, he

said. America’s Finest employees also have been trained to clean up mold — and death situations — Bourn said. Masks are mandatory for both scenarios. If, in the crew’s best judgment, the carpet or wood can’t be salvaged, America’s Finest also is the place to purchase new flooring. Many will remember Bourns’ partner Sean Ryan as the owner of Northwest Interior Design for nearly a dozen years. After selling the business about a year ago, he was compelled to take it back and reopened under the America’s Finest umbrella. The display store, in the former Northwest Interior Design building, has ample room to showcase the company’s wide array of carpeting, hardwood and laminate flooring, tile and vinyl. It also carries a selection of “green” products such as bamboo and cork flooring. Wood cabinets and countertops in a rainbow of man-made

composites and selections of natural marble and granite are displayed conveniently at the store. “We have from the oldest to the newest in products and we can get our hands on any flooring that customers desire,” Bourn said. “We like to think of ourselves becoming an interior design center, too, and I am excited by the possibilities. I really enjoy the interaction with people and getting their homes back in order — whether it’s new flooring or cleaning, it’s exciting to see their homes come together. He termed the tri-part business — commercial and residential cleaning, emergency services and retail flooring sales — as a good mix that meshes well. “It’s been good because we’re a local company that deals with these kinds of things and we think we’re America’s finest,” Bourn chuckled at his own pun. “I love the name and I love our business.”

A nursery that has what its customers need

Rose Jaeger, above, takes time to present her beautiful display of pots and containers. From annuals to perenials, to shrubs and trees, Henery’s Garden Center is a popular, fully equipped garden center.

When it is time to winterize your yard, you will find help and expertise at Henery’s Garden Center. Center Preparing your yard for winter is not always a simple chore. Fall projects can eliminate much of the drudgery during the following spring. Henery’s Garden Center was full of customers on an August afternoon. Rose Jaeger, owner, took time out to discuss winterizing. “It is like getting ready for a party,” she said. “If you don’t do the work in the fall, you will have a bit of a mess in the spring.” Tim and Rose Jaeger own the large popular nursery at 1060 Sequim-Dungeness Way. They are getting ready for the fall planting season and are well-stocked with trees, shrubs and perennials. “Their roots grow all winter unless it is freezing hard,” said Rose Jaeger.” That is why fall is such an important time to plant those new additions to your landscape. If they are planted in the fall, they will be well-established and ready to grow in the spring.” Hopefully, gardeners will have their favorites tucked away and ready for the first frost. Jaeger stressed that people should stop fertilizing in late summer or fall, as the frost will kill new growth. “The lawn is the only place for fertilizer in the late summer,” said Jaeger. “Grass needs to be healthy before winter.” Henery’s offers mulches such as soil building compost and bark. Many plants benefit from good mulch surrounding

Mulch keeps the soil moist and shelters tender roots. “Remember the four D’s!” said Jaeger. “When cleaning your yard in the fall, it is important to discard materials that are in that category. The four D’s are dead, deranged, diseased and damaged. Get rid of them!” Most gardeners get excited about fall bulbs. Henery’s excels in finding unusual hard-to-find varieties. The Jaegers search for species and hybrids that are scarce in local nurseries. “We beefed up our seed order this year,” said Jaeger. “Many of our seeds come from Territorial Seed Company. We will carry their whole line of organic seeds. Many are heirloom collections. One can plant lettuce, chard and spinach in the fall. During the winter, one can snip small tender shoots and those plants take off in the spring.” When asked about winterizing cement and ceramic containers, Jaeger said there is little to worry about unless the pot material is porous. Porous containers should be kept dry and under the eaves of the house during cold weather. The display of pond plants at Henery’s

Henery ... makes it easy to select the aquatic plants that suit you. Most of the water plants offered are very hardy providing ice does not get to the corms or roots. Water lilies should be left deep in the water where the ice cannot get to them. There are many water features at Henery’s and they will inspire a gardener to create his or her own. Jaeger stressed that fountains and other equipment that are used for water flow should be drained before a freeze. Tools tend to be neglected at the end of the year. Gardeners are rather anxious to hibernate when the cold weather sets in and interest in the yard and equipment wanes. However, it is important to clean tools. Cleaning prevents rusting and removes organisms that can cause disease. Blades should be sharpened and sterilized. All of the preparation that takes place in the fall helps to make spring a joyous time without a heavy work load. The perennial garden will need your attention also. Fall is the time to divide plants and throw away those that are diseased or dead. The dry perennials will need cutting down and some might need dividing. Gardeners have a lot to think about in the winter when it comes to their gardens. As Rose Jaeger says, looking forward to spring can be like getting ready for a party.

Insulation might not be as exciting xciting as home décor but it is much more important because of the many benefits it offers. Tom Foley, owner of C & F Insulation at 258315 Highway 101 just west of Sequim, has been in the insulation business for 21 years. “Contractors are always calling me for advice,” said Foley. “Business is still good even in the recession.” C & F Specializes in new construction or remodeling homes and commercial buildings. Walls, floors, cathedral ceilings and metal buildings are on their long list of services. There is also a long list of certifications and memberships on the company’s Web site at www. candfinsulation.com. The company serves both Jefferson and Clallam counties. Among their most recent projects were the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Longhouse Market & Deli and the remodeling of Chimacum School. Insulation, the all-important ingredient in any building, protects from cold, heat, noise, vapors and air movement. It also saves on energy and the cost of energy. High quality insulation improves the value of your home and if you plan an entertainment room, quality insulation is a must for proper acoustics. Harmful materials no longer are found in insulation and the various products are much easier to work with than they were a decade ago. Today, you will find C & F Insulation many new 258315 Highway 101, products on the Sequim market 681-0480 that provide

structural support, as well as insulation. The products are made from a variety of materials and usually come in four types: rolls and batts, loose fill, rigid and foamin-place. Contractors such as C & F Insulation are well informed about all the options and what is appropriate for a given project. Be sure to check with building codes. “I want to emphasize the importance of quality,” Foley said. “Folks go for a cheaper product because of the economy but what you put into it pays back every day. It is a very important investment, the buyer needs to know that. The cheapest job is the worst job!” The higher the quality of insulation you choose, the more you help the environment. Heating and cooling consumes 30 percent of all energy used in commercial buildings. You can cut the monthly utility bills in your home up to 48 percent with high quality insulation. Builders and developers are very concerned about green factors, such as energy efficiency. “The good contractors get that idea,” said Foley. Reducing emissions of CO2 with proper insulation is an important responsibility for builders. Attic insulation is very important, Foley stressed. To learn if you have enough insulation in your attic, measure the thickness of the material. If rock wool or fiberglass is less than 11 inches thick or if cellulose is less than 8 inches

thick, more would be better. If your attic has a lot of quality insulation and your home still is drafty, you might need to add more insulation to the exterior walls. Do not forget to insulate around recessed light fixtures (consult an electrician) and vents. Crawl spaces should be inspected for problems and proper insulation. Floors should be insulated. Many utility companies offer incentives for insulation upgrades. There are also tax credits available. Clallam PUD, Puget Power and other power companies have approved C & F Insulation for weatherization programs. For your insulation questions, call Foley at 681-0480.

Montelius said one of the first things he tells a new crew member is, “You treat my customers like your favorite aunt and we’ll be getting along fine.” Brother’s Plumbing is a full-service firm with six service trucks, a retail site in the office and a warehouse in Port Townsend, which has a large inventory of plumbing supplies: water pumps, water heaters, faucets, toilets and garbage disposals. With the manufacturer’s warranty, Brother’s Plumbing also gives a one-year company warranty on all labor and parts. If a unit is from their inventory, Montelius said, “We put it it at no cost at all. Customer satisfaction is the key ... The husband and wife team of Dave Kreps and Shirley Mercer of Kreps Construction, LLC, believe that working to help their customers discover what they really want and need from a new home or remodel is the best approach to customer satisfaction. Kreps has been interested in building for as long as he can remember and worked in some aspect of the trade for the past 36 years. His grandfather was a craftsman and his father a carpenter. He remembers as a youth the amazement he felt watching how they used tools and soon followed their lead by constructing treehouses and boats. When it came time to make a career decision, he toyed with the idea of pursuing his other interests of welding and wildlife management, but it seemed that construction work came naturally and always paid the bills. When the opportunity to become a builder’s apprentice presented itself, he did not have to think twice. In the 1980s, Kreps found himself working in Juneau, Alaska, where difficult and remote construction jobs were the norm. By that decade, most of the easy building lots had been scooped up, narrowing the work available to downtown remodels and new home lots on

During the 1990s Kreps met and married his sweetheart and fellow sailing enthusiast, Shirley. They built a small home, living off the grid for the first year, and sailed when they could. One favored destination was 45 miles southwest to Tenakee Hot Springs which was a popular vacation get-away for locals. Kreps became a general contractor and began building summer homes on the island, which proved to be a greater logistical nightmare than the Juneau work sites. The only way to access the area, that had no running water and generator power only, was by plane or boat. He generally would fly back and forth to work, but success depended on really good planning as supplies arrived by barge once every six months. If essential tools or equipment were forgotten, misplaced or broken, the only two options were a creative solution or a very long wait for the next shipment. In 2002, Mercer retired from her job as a geographic systems specialist and became a partner in Kreps Construction. The couple decided they had enough of inclement weather and impossible building sites and moved to Sequim where they spent two years clearing the land and building their own home. Mercer’s computer savvy and working knowledge of maps and data management proved to be great assets to the business. She learned architectural software easily, which she utilizes in the design of the custom single-family dwellings they specialize in building. Mercer draws the plans, manages the paperwork and budget. Kreps takes over the construction work from there, except for the finishing touches of landscaping and tile work, which Mercer completes. One of the services Kreps Construction offers is particularly helpful to out-of-town customers who have purchased or are considering a building lot. Mercer researches the features of the site to include such details as wetlands delineation, critical aquifer recharge and wildlife concerns such as eagle habitat. She can arrange soil analysis and septic system placement. Avoiding pitfalls is the best way to save time and money and Kreps Construction, LLC prevents running afoul of codes 398 Pierson Road, Sequim and regulations. For all jobs, they consider how the room will be used and who will use it. Especially in kitchens, sun exposure will dictate window and skylight placement. The flow of the design is all important to making the space functional and attractive. Many cabinetry options are available that will satisfy anyone from a gourmet chef to a heat-and-eat cook. Kreps recently completed a course with Fine Line Pacific, Inc., in Kent, which enables him to create templates for Corian® and stone countertops. Lots of storage space, multiuse rooms, flex-space areas and many cable outlets are other features they employ to add convenience and usability. Above all, the goal of Kreps Construction is customer satisfaction by helping homeowners realize the home of their dreams. They feel confident guaranteeing their work for the long run as they make a great effort to get it right from the very beginning.

Building a business, building a community Thomas Building Center has been a steady presence in Sequim since Vern Thomas and his son Rand first opened the doors in 1972. During their 37 years of business, they have weathered the low points and expanded to meet the booms in the building trade all the while keeping fast to their vision of customer service and community support. Before arriving in Sequim, the elder Thomas was a thirdgeneration lumber man with a business in Seattle. After a sevenyear hiatus to do Christian work, he decided to return to commerce, turning his sights toward a smaller community. Sequim came to the family’s attention when another son was clearing titles for the new SunLand development. Rand Thomas had experience in the retail grocery business. He and his dad considered opening a mom and pop store but instead joined forces to buy property in the current location from a company whose business was manufacturing trusses and wall panels. That first operation was about 25 percent of its present size with the entire retail store occupying what is now the paint department. Reflecting on those days, Thomas says that he and his dad had a great partnership. The two diverse backgrounds of customer service in a retail setting and building supply expertise attracted local contractors who appreciated the friendly and reliable service — and who to this

Photos by Kelly McKil lip As the contractors’ place of choice, the business grew steadily to supply building materials and tools to the general public from Forks to Port Townsend. In 1974, the Thomases purchased two more lots to add to the existing four, built a large showroom and became an affiliate of the Ace® Hardware Corporation. Always with an eye to the future, they bought a building supply company in 1975, which they converted to manufacture and sell pre-hung doors, cabinets, mouldings, prefinishing and also added a carpet and vinyl showroom. A building slump in 1980 brought rethinking their vision for the future and they closed that part of the business. The family always had been involved in community activities and remained so in tough times. From 1981-1982, Rand Thomas served as the Rotary Club president. A plaque hangs on his wall expressing gratitude for his support in the building of the Sequim Library. From 1985-1995 local home construction began to explode with the development of Bell Hill and the Dungeness Golf Course. Contractors started to build expensive, custom homes. Tony Steinman was hired for his building experience and technical background to make sure contractors had what they needed to get the job done. Steinman continues in the role of contractor sales manager and has won great respect from his peers in the industry. The Thomases continued to purchase property for their business as it grew, bringing it to the size it is today. In 1995, Rand Thomas took six months off, partnering with Rochelle McHugh of McHugh Realty to organize the 100th Sequim Irrigation Festival. The years 2005-2006 brought a boom in speculative home building. Again, Thomas geared up with more salesmen who were relationship-driven partners in the projects of their contractors and owner-builder customers. In 2007, Rand and Darlene Thomas made a significant donation to the Olympic Medical Center Cancer Center and it subsequently became the

Thomas Family Cancer Center. Thomas had been involved with the Olympic Medical Center Foundation for many years, but the center has a much more personal meaning for him. He fought cancer in 2000 and lost both of his parents to the disease. The greatest pride he feels in this achievement is that patients no longer have to bear the expense and stress of traveling out of town for cancer care, chemotherapy, radiation treatments and doctor visits. With his experience of roller coaster trends in the industry, Thomas, who continues as CEO, recognized the approach of the current economic down turn as early as 2007. Together with Steinman, and his son, store manager Andrew Thomas, who by then had been a full-time employee for many years, he looked for new ways to strengthen the business. Bill Matthews was brought onboard as general manager in December 2008. Matthews arrived with an extensive and varied background in the building industry. Although new construction is depressed, he says, people still want to improve their residences. Helping their customers sort through the bewildering array of products always has been an important part of the business. Outside the center, there is a large, walk-on display of decking products that are available. The new “Designs by Thomas” showroom allows the homeowner to stroll by model kitchens and see and touch hundreds of door styles, cabinets and many other home products. The model bathroom on display is not only tastefully appointed but complies with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In addition, the store now offers installation services for decks, kitchens, counter tops, doors, mouldings, hardware and windows using their extensive contractor base. Andrew Thomas says they work with customers to offer style at any budget and warranty their work. Mike Stratton is in charge

of window installation and service and can guide the customer through all aspects of the process. Recently, the retail area has been remodeled to accommodate and merchandize the new products. They are in the process of remodeling the outdoor area with new fencing and racking that will add 20 percent more storage space. Faith in their business, the community and optimism for the future are evidenced by Thomas Building Center and Designs by Thomas moving forward when others are retreating. Thomas says unlike large chain outlets, they offer building supply expertise and service and will continue to adapt to the needs of the community rather than expecting the community to adapt to them.

Peninsula Paint is a source for quality and expertise You can feel it when you walk in the door, the positive energy is there. Peninsula Paint Company, at 154 Washington St., is in a handy location and is a handy place for advice. The general public and conscientious contractors look to Peninsula Paint Company, a full-service paint store, for all products related to interior and exterior paints. The store has a commitment to provide the best quality and value for the money. They are open every weekday and on Saturdays. “Some contractors want quality,” said Mike DuBeau, manager. “There is a huge difference in how grades of paint perform. Our staff gives good advice and our quality products are reliable. We have any color you need and one-pint sample cans of paint are available.” The staff was laughing and joking on the sunny day they were asked to take time out to talk about their busy store. “Business is good,” said DuBeau. “Not as good as it was before the recession, but things keep moving.” Susan Hubner is the color coordinator Store manager Mike DuBeau can advise customers on the many types of paint available. and knows the various painting techniques. Peninsula Paint has many free pamphlets with detailed instructions for applying stain. All of the tools needed for a paint job can be found in the store. Dropcloths, rollers, brushes and various tools that are new to the market are available. There are paints for garden décor, sealants, stains and trims. You will find multiple brands of house paints and all are premium grades. When asked about repair issues, DuBeau talked about many new methods. He mentioned flexible caulk. “There are new ways to repair areas that can save a lot of money and time,” said DuBeau. Specialty paints are not always necessary if quality paints are used. Good examples are trims and primers. If you are painting over old paint of the same color, a primer is not necessary. Regular house paint can be used for a trim. Do not cut corners on the quality of paint and always use two coats when painting a surface for the first time. DuBeau grabbed a pamphlet that contained an amazing variety of subdued colors with exciting examples of color combinations for interior walls. It is likely that a customer in need of help will leave Peninsula Paint with enthusiasm and a wonderful collection of new ideas.

Home Safe Home So who among modern men and women hasn’t entered their driveway with a sigh of relief and sought refuge from the stresses of the outside world within the shelter of their home? Indeed, deep within the DNA of Homo sapiens and beast and bird alike, must lay the drive to build, burrow or seek the confines of their own protected nest. Today, that drive for safety and security definitely has gone electronic. Burglar alarms, surveillance cameras, driveway vehicle detection systems, door phones and intercoms, smoke and fire detectors, carbon monoxide and moisture detectors comprise an array of entry and security systems for both residential and commercial applications. Some insurance companies actually require monitored fire and burglar alarm systems on homes above a certain value and most offer reduced rates for homes with alarm systems. In business since 1982, Hi-Tech Electronics in Port Angeles is the largest locally-owned electronics business on the Olympic Peninsula. Owner Gary Politika and manager Mike Shirley discuss the improvements the security industry has undergone over the years. “Many people don’t realize how easy to operate the systems have become,” Politika says. “Just like with a car door, you press a button on a key fob to arm or disarm, turn on house lights or set off a panic button. You can even tell whether someone has entered your home through radio wave communication with the panel of a two-way system.” Shirley explains that for existing structures, the company often relies on the newer, wireless devices that are more cost effective to install. Small, noninvasive units require no wires that can be cut to disarm and can be hidden in crevices such as door jambs, rendering them virtually invisible. Today’s advanced motion detectors use a combination of passive infrared and microwave technologies that greatly reduce false alarms, since both signals are required for a trigger. Pet-immune units also are available. And cellular communicator modules relay data to the monitoring company even if power and phone lines are down.

“The weakest link in any security system has always been the out going communication,” says Politika. “But with the latest in dedicated cellular dialers, it is virtually impossible for a burglar to get around the system.” Auto dialers can be preprogrammed to call several emergency phone numbers, from alarm companies to your office or cell phone. Complementing the electronic advancements in window and motion sensors, today’s surveillance systems offer cameras that can view in color for the best in daytime detail, but automatically switch to black-and-white, along with infrared illuminators, for superior nighttime viewing of up to about 50 feet.

Gray earned a degree in interior design in 1997 and her husband’s family owns Angeles Furniture in Port Angeles. She creates the room vignettes on display so customers investing in a large piece of furniture, such as a sofa, can visualize what it could look like in their home. “People want new pieces but they don’t know how to make them work in their home and they need a lot of help,” Gray said. “I”ll go out and take measurements of the furniture and see how to arrange it in the best way.” Most customers also need space planning help with fixed features — fireplaces, windows and book shelves — and how to get the best use of their space. “I can push the envelope a little bit and take their look and feel and move those out into their accessories by grouping things to make a larger impact,” Gray said. “Sometimes there are voids in a room, so I’ll move pieces to different walls to balance it out better.” Gray always tells her customers they can take their redecorating in phases and gives them tips on how to re-energize their homes, even on a small budget. “I talk a lot about paint because paint can freshen up the décor and make for a dramatic change at a minimal cost. I also tell clients to pick the paint color last. They need to first pick something that inspires them in the room and then build on it.” Gray, who worked for Starbucks’ corporate office in retail design from 1998-2005, said her own personal style is simple and cleanlined. “I suggest the most expensive piece be neutral, something simple. Start with the basic pieces and think about the accessories you can change,” Gray said. “I recommend throw pillows in seasonal colors — warm tones fall and winter, cool tones spring and summer.” The key to home decorating is understanding scale and proportions,

Oftentimes, more is less in design work and there are challenges. “I think it’s always hard to tell customers they haven’t been doing it right so that they’re not offended and they embrace a different perspective,” Gray said. “For example, they’re trying to do too many things at once in a room. I tell them they have to narrow their focal points. I try my best to accommodate their focal points but by allowing just one to take precedence, the room comes together.” With newly blended families, Gray cautions that all of his and her possessions shouldn’t be displayed together because the décor then is too chaotic to be focused. With Gray’s talent and experience, she can sort out what adds to and detracts from the room’s ambience. Janet Gray Interiors offers these services: design concepts for new and existing spaces, redesign with existing pieces, color consultation, retail design for sales floors and windows, kitchen space planning and decor, staging for home sales, holiday decor, special party decoration, nursery design, and organizing for efficient use of small spaces. She also has several different packages catering to specific needs, such as a one-hour “designer touch” visit to “Deck the Halls” packages for the holidays. A Sequim native and business owner since 2005, Gray said she has the best of both worlds — working out of her home and being a mom. Gray said she’s always enjoyed design and colors and knew in high school she wanted to do something along those lines. “I really like the business side of things because it provides balance for me,” she said. “It’s great working with people to accomplish their goals — and when they have ‘light bulb’ moments on what I’ve done, I enjoy that.”

There’s never been a better time to replace the windows in your home. In addition to adding to the beauty of your home inside and out, new windows can decrease your heating costs significantly. “With the $1,500 government energy tax credit in addition to the rebate incentive from the county of up to $6 per square foot, this has been a very busy time for re-doing home windows,” says Marlene Garling of Matthews Glass in Port Angeles. The combination of incentives and major reductions in heating costs makes new vinyl windows an irresistible bargain and Matthews Glass has plenty of experience and expertise. This family owned company has been in Port Angeles since 1952. Patrick McGinitie is the third generation in the business, the son of owner Thomas McGinitie. “Our business is primarily replacement windows,” said Garling, “as most builders of new construction use various other glass manufacturers as part of their construction package. With such a large percentage of the housing in Port Angeles being existing structures, that makes replacement windows a vital business.” Most people replace their wood or aluminum windows with modern vinyl, which is the least expensive and most efficient material. Aluminum frames lose a great deal of heat, wood requires

significant maintenance, fiberglass is efficient but expensive and vinyl has been perfected over considerable use and in a variety of locales. How does someone know if it’s time to replace the glass in their house, other than when prices are really good? With aluminum windows, you know it’s time to replace a sealed unit if you start seeing moisture inside the unit or if it’s often misty or cloudy inside the unit. Even though it can dissipate and clear at times, eventually it will get to the point where it won’t clear at all. Then it’s time to replace it. You can’t repair the sealed, insulated unit, so what you have to do is cut out the old sealed unit and install a new sealed unit. It’s really pretty simple. If you call Matthews Glass, they’ll send a specialist to the house to do a no obligation estimate. This can be done from the outside of the house and no one needs to be home. That estimate will be mailed to you and you

Romancing the Home 2009 then can sign a contract and schedule a time for installation. They’ll also help you with the paperwork for the rebates and tax incentives. The actual work of installation, especially with complete window units, rarely takes very long, especially with such experienced crews. If you want to keep your aluminum frames, they’ll direct you to other repair specialists in the area. They don’t really do construction work; they do the glass. Most people replace the frame and the glass at the same time and change to a more energy efficient material such as vinyl. Especially in this beautiful part of the world, where so many have amazing views of the mountains, the water, the woods or all three, good windows add the beauty of the outdoors to your indoor environment. They also add light to your living space and a financial bright spot to your utility bill. If you think it may be time to replace the glass in your home, call Matthews Glass and schedule an estimate. If you do it soon, you may very well take advantage of big economic incentives and also give yourself a brighter, more beautiful outlook on the world.

Is it really just garbage?

36 • Wednesday, October 7, 2009

“Packaging.” That was the simple, direct answer from Helen Freilich, waste reduction specialist for the city of Port Angeles, when she was asked what most important thing the average household could focus on to reduce their waste. “If people will just be aware when they’re at the store that they’re not just buying the product, they’re also buying the packaging. If you make that connection and try to avoid buying things in individual servings, buy milk in plastic containers that can be recycled instead of wax-covered paper cartons that can’t, look for things they can buy in bulk or look for recyclable packaging, all that can make a huge difference.” As a society, Americans have an enormous waste disposal problem and it is expensive for individuals and for the gover nment. The key to effective, environmentally conscious waste management involves three primary factors: reducing the amount of waste generated, reusing as many products as possible and recycling what is left. All three of those factors rely heavily on the individual and the individual household. After the initial problem of packaging, the next responsibility is disposing of material after it’s used. Recycling is making a significant improvement in dealing with waste. In Port Angeles, for example, everyone has free recycling pickup as part of their garbage bill. From curbside containers, they have weekly pickups of plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum

and tin cans, mixed paper and cardboard. In addition, glass bottles and jars can be recycled at conveniently located sites around town. Yard waste is the next most common type of material that can be recycled, either through the curbside yard waste recycling bins in the cities or through home composting, an increasingly popular option. The average family produces about four pounds of food waste per household per week and all of that can be composted easily and then used as clean soil in yards and gardens. “We’re encouraging home composting because it’s simple, a great source of soil for the garden and the right thing to do with food waste, yard waste, anything that can decompose. We can’t mix food waste with yard waste in our recycling program, so unless you compost it the only other option is for it to go in the garbage, which is expensive and more difficult for us to process,” said Freilich. Compost can either be brought to the city composting facility or it can be composted at home. More difficult materials to dispose of can be handled through the Moderate Risk Waste Facility at the Regional Transfer Center. They will take things such as cleaners, solvents, pesticides and herbicides, as well as paint, oil and many types of metal. Such things as motor oil, antifreeze and auto batteries also can be taken to the Regional Transfer Station to be disposed of at no charge. Larger items such as appliances, architectural materials and such can be taken there for a charge. If the item still is in working condition, there are many options. An important means of recycling larger items that are in working condition is to use local Internet resources,

such as the 2good2toss program, where people can give away reusable building materials and large appliances for other people to put back into use. Things such as furniture, bicycles, working TVs, clothes, household appliances, computers and monitors can be given to the local thrift stores to be resold to benefit the organizations that sponsor those stores. “People outside the city limits can also

participate in the recycling pickup, but they don’t want to pay for it,” Freilich said. “What they don’t seem to realize is that everyone pays for waste disposal in one way or another, at one time or another.” The smarter people are about how they use and reuse resources, the less expensive it is for everyone. Americans may not eliminate their astonishing level of material consumption, nor

does the country want to as an economy, but people significantly can improve the unnecessary waste problem by reducing consumption of packaging, recycling the materials and resources they purchase and reusing the products that still have a usable life. That way everyone can have a healthier, more ecologically sound and environmentally more sustainable world.

Compost can either be brought to the city composting facility or it can be composted at home.
