Summer maintenance automobile checklist Breakdowns never happen at a convenient time After what seemed like an endless winter, you may be planning to hit the road for a spring or summer road trip. It’s time to give your car or truck a little springtime TLC. Drivers often overlook their cars and trucks when it is spring cleaning time. Following a few easy steps to spruce up your vehicle helps avoid costly repairs. So take your vehicle to a dealership to get checked out - or, better yet, to an independent mechanic you trust. Check the battery You can’t get where you are going if the car won’t start. Winter is tough on all the starting components like the starter and alternator. The battery works harder and can get drained. ** Signs of a weak battery: dimming headlights or interior lights; power windows that take longer than usual to go up and down.

Check the brakes Winter conditions and salt on the roads can lead to corrosion of brake parts; anti-lock braking systems get an especially hard workout in winter’s slick conditions. Nothing is more crucial to your safety than your brakes, so get them checked. **Trouble signs: pulling to one side when you hit the brakes, squeaking or grinding noises and a brake pedal that feels too soft. Inspect the tires Worn-down tires make it hard to stop, even if your brakes are in good order. Try the coin test on your tires: Insert a quarter into several grooves across each tire. If part of Washington’s head is always covered, you still have 4/32 inch of tread left and can probably drive safely. If you have less tread, it’s time to think about replacements. (A definite danger signal comes when you slip a penny into a groove and the tread does not reach Lincoln’s head.) Even if your tire treads are OK, make sure you keep them inflated to the pressure listed on the placard visible when the driver’s door is open. You can boost your gas mileage by 3% or more

and make the car safer as well. To get an accurate reading, check the pressure of tires when they are cold, not when you have been driving. Check the belts and hoses A broken belt or hose can cause problems ranging from the loss of power steering to an overheated engine, but these parts are easily overlooked. Look for cracks and peeling on the belts, softening on the hoses - or ask your mechanic to do it for you. Broken belts are one of motorists’ worst summer breakdown surprises. Test the air conditioning Turn on the cooler full blast and make sure it reaches that max chill in short order. If you suspect problems, get a mechanic to check it out soon. Check your oxygen sensor This one is obscure, but it is important to gas mileage. Because the sensor helps set the fuel mix going into your engine, a faulty one can cause too much gas to be used - cutting your mileage by up to 40%. Replacing the sensor, which usually costs less than $200, needs to be done every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. And it is the repair problem that most often causes the “Check Engine” warning to light up near your speedometer! Getting a spring checkup for your car not only could avoid a summer breakdown, it could save you money on your monthly gas budget.

Emergency Road Kit No matter how long your trip will be, you should have an Emergency Road Kit in your car for those unwelcome moments. Your kit should include: • Flashlights and flares • Jumper cables • Tire inflator • Extra fluids (oil, coolant, transmission) • A First Aid kit • A jack (make sure that the vehicle jack is operational and all the tools are present) • Gloves • Rags/paper towels • Water • Blanket • Multi-purpose tools (pliers, wire cutters, a knife, a saw, a bottle opener, screwdriver, file, and an awl) • Pack as lightly as you can to avoid adding unnecessary load on your tires; this can help save some gas, too! By packing lightly, you’ll also avoid blocking the view in your mirrors while driving.

 • Following posted highway speed limits will increase your car’s fuel efficiency because gas mileage declines by a few percent for each 5 MPH increase in speed above 45 mph.

 • Finally, buckle up, slow down, and have fun!

Don’t put your pet in the back of a truck It is very dangerous, and in Washington illegal, to drive with a dog in the back of a pick-up truck. Not only can flying debris cause serious injury, but a dog may be unintentionally thrown into traffic if the driver suddenly hits the brakes, swerves, or is hit by another car. Dogs should ride either in the cab (in a crate or wearing a seat belt harness designed for dogs) or in a secured crate in the bed of the truck.

Preparing your auto for warmer weather Spring is one of the most important times of year for you to detail your car. Winter is very hard on your car with extreme temperature changes, rain, sleet, snow, sand, salt and other chemicals that are used on our roads. You need to clean your car thoroughly and then seal and protect it from all of those damaging elements.

Protecting Your Car’s Paint/Clear Coat Finish for Spring: Washing your car before waxing and polishing is the first step. It is important to use a car wash soap before waxing to ensure that you clean and remove all remaining dirt residue. Using professional car wash mitts, in conjunction with car wash soap, will ensure clear coat protection and reduce minor surface scratches that may occur. Polishing your clear coat will be the first line of defense and will minimize paint defects. Using a professional finishing car wax is important because it lays the foundation in the waxing

process. The final step is to seal the car wax with paint sealant. The paint sealant stays above the wax layer and will be the first barrier for protection from the sun and other environment fallout. If your paint is in good shape with little to no paint defects, you can skip the car polish step and go right into waxing and sealing your paint. Taking the time to detail your exterior properly will ensure that your car is protected from the summer heat that can cause paint oxidation. It is a good idea to polish your car’s windshield, windows and headlights. Using a strong glass cleaner to keep your windshield clean and dry will ensure clarity and prep your glass for the polishing phase. Clean your auto glass. Use a professionalgrade cleaner to provide you with a spotless glass surface. Don’t forget about your wheels and tires; your brakes get hot and release dust and other

contaminants on your wheels which can cause pitting overtime. If you do not clean them on a regular basis, your wheels will lose their integrity and cause them to deteriorate. Clean, seal and protect your wheels and tires for summer months ahead.

Arriving safe!

It’s always important to drive defensively and cautiously, but it’s even more important to drive carefully during the summer months. People tend to spend more time on the road during the summer, thus increasing your likelihood of an accident. In fact, the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day have been dubbed the “101 deadliest days for all drivers.” To drive safely this summer, make sure you are following basic driving rules. Always make sure to leave enough space between you and the car in front of you (1 car length for every 10 miles an hour is the rule of thumb). Look far ahead when you are driving, as you are more likely to spot a crossing pedestrian or another car making a sudden stop. Defensive driving may seem obvious, but utilizing your defensive driving skills can save your life.

Beginning with 2008-model vehicles the EPA now incorporates higher speeds, stop-and-go driving, more aggressive acceleration, use of air-conditioning and driving in colder temperatures when calculating fuel efficiency averages. The new formula reduces city mpg by 12%, on average, and highway mileage by 8%, according to EPA estimates. Gas-electric hybrids and some other high fuel economy vehicles could see even bigger reductions. The Kiplinger tool lets you compare old and new mpg averages for some model cars. As long as the manufacturer has not significantly altered a 2008 model, the estimated changes offer a fair guide to your vehicle’s real mpg. Go to: Kiplinger.com/tools/gas_mileage.

Avoid summer breakdowns

Check coolant levels: One of the greatest causes of summer breakdowns is overheating, The system should be flushed and refilled at least every two years. Most drivers think that antifreeze is only necessary during the winter, but it prevents your car from overheating in the summer months, too. The levels need to be maintained year-round. A 50-50 solution of water and antifreeze is usually recommended, but it’s best to refer to your manual.

Examine filters, belts and hoses: Belts and hoses endure a lot of wear and tear during the winter. When the engine is off and it cools, look for worn or cracked belts and damaged, blistered or soft hoses. Replace cracked and torn belts. Also tighten any loose belts. Follow the same routine when inspecting hoses, including tightening any loose clamps. In newer vehicles, some of these checks will have to be performed by an authorized mechanic or taken to a dealer. Cooling system: A marginally operating air-conditioning system can fail in hot weather. AAA recommends having the system examined by a qualified technician, who will inspect and adjust drive belts and check for cold stream air from outlets.
