Come, play, stay
Welcome to the Sequim-Dungeness Valley as the world comes once again to rejoice in lavender! We are very excited about the spectacular Sequim Lavender Farm Faire … or the Faire, as we call it. Why? Because it offers something for everyone … Lavender in the Park near downtown Sequim is where children, parents and visitors find the food, the music, the stunning arts and crafts, the spreading green of the park, and, of course, all things lavender … it’s free and open to EVERYONE! But the magnificent center of the Faire is the tours of the historical Sequim lavender farms … all 7 of them! Each a festival in its own right … food, music, crafts, but most importantly the work of a real lavender farm … demonstrations of oil distillation, harvesting, drying and lovely products for all. Come join us … stay, play and let lavender change your mind … for good! Scott Nagel Executive Director Sequim Lavender Farmers Association 6

HERITAGE LAVENDER FARM TOUR Seven Farm Festivals for One Low Price All Weekend
Come join us at the Faire!
Our Member Farms
For over 16 years the world has descended on the Sequim-Dungeness Valley to experience the joys of lavender…and the original Sequim lavender farms that started it all! The Sequim Lavender Farm Faire – “The Faire” – connects you to all of the historic and world famous farms that you have visited or heard about and that have made Sequim an international lavender destination. The Sequim Lavender Farm Faire is your “go to” location for the summer… the original Heritage Lavender Farm Tour is the lifeenhancing event that will inspire and amaze you, and Lavender in the Park is the free, stunning family friendly all-day park venue.
The Story of Sequim Lavender
The Sequim lavender movement began in 1995 when a group of passionate farmers sought to restore the agricultural heritage of the fertile Sequim valley. Today, the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association grows and supports the production of premium quality lavender on
Ciscoe Morris Returns to the Opening Ceremonies! Come join us at 11:30 on Friday July 20 for the official opening of the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire at the Faire’s Lavender in the Park at Carrie Blake/Reuse Demonstration Park. The opening features the rousing and patriotic sounds of the 133rd Army Band, based at Camp Murray. Northwest favorite media personality and master gardener Ciscoe Morris returns to Sequim to anoint us all with lavender “buds” and his great energy and knowledge. We will honor our veterans and our community with a program of patriotic and band standards—and, of course, a shower of lavender buds on everyone. SE QUI M LAVE NDE R FAR M FAIR E 2 0 1 2
family owned farms. These dedicated farmers are working toward a common goal of preserving and promoting lavender in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and making Sequim the world-wide destination for lavender lovers.
Why Do You Charge For The Lavender Farm Tour?
The Faire is our annual fundraising event... a festival at each farm on tour every summer to raise dollars for our programs, the community, the industry-wide lavender conference, and to help us meet our mission of promoting, educating, and inspiring the importance of lavender and all its benefits, and giving back to the community. Revenue from ticket/button sales helps offset the high costs of producing this valley-wide event and taking care of thousands of visitors from around the world.
Giving Back to the Community
We are deeply connected to the communities in which we live and work. At Lavender in the Park we feature Community Lavender Links, a program for the promotion and health of our nonprofit community. We give free booth space to more than 15 nonprofit organizations so all the money they raise goes directly to their programs (See Page 61 for more details). Also our members give generously. (Please see the list of recipients on page 65.)
Sequim Lavender Weekend
Thanks to the sponsorship and support of the City of Sequim, Sequim Lavender Weekend is a community-wide celebration with multiple events celebrating this amazing plant. Access all the lavender events and transportation options at www.sequimlavenderweekend.com, or at any of the information booths. The Heritage Lavender Farm Tour features seven unique and iconic lavender farms. These heritage farms are the classic and beautiful destination farms of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley on the Olympic Peninsula – family-owned and operated farms with over 125 years of collective lavender-growing experience. Our farmers live on the land and are full time farmers, committed to the highest quality lavender, lavender products, and events. The seven Heritage Farms on Tour includes two of the original founding farms of the Sequim lavender movement – the iconic Purple Haze Lavender Farm and Olympic Lavender plus Jardin Du Soleil Lavender, Lost Mountain Lavender Farm, Port Williams Lavender, Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm, and Washington Lavender Farm. Each farm is a festival all its own with fields of lavender, hundreds of lavender products, workshops, demonstrations, u-cut lavender, crafts, food, beverages, music, and more. Each farm has plenty of free parking and you can visit the farms as often as you please, or you can take our free Farm Tour Buses. Visit the farms at your own pace, relax, and take in the aroma of lavender that fills the air.

jardin du soleil
A new beginning for a familiar icon
Songwriter Peter Allen’s, “Everything Old is New Again,” from the Broadway hit, “All That Jazz,” might be a good description for Jardin du Soleil Lavender Farm. Don’t worry, fields of luscious lavender plants remain in the starring roles on the farm, but new faces share the stage as we come up on the 16th Sequim Lavender Weekend. Jordan and Paul Schiefen purchased Jardin du Soleil Lavender Farm last fall from longtime owners Pam and Randy Nicholson. “We always intended to eventually sell the farm and return to the Southwest,” Pam Nicholson said. “We accomplished what we set out to do at Jardin du Soleil and felt it was time to move on.” The Nicholsons were part of the Sequim lavender festivities since 1999 on the 10-acre dairy farm in Dungeness. The two were looking for just the right buyer and found them in the Schiefens. “They were the perfect buyers for the farm,” Pam said. “We knew they could take Jardin to the next step.” The first step for the Jordan and Paul was to buy a farm. No longer enamored with California crowds, the couple sold their insurance business in Santa Barbara, hit the road and discovered Sequim. Luckily, the lavender farm was for sale. They weren’t looking for a lavender farm per se, but wanted an existing farm. “A place for the family to be together
and for the kids to run around,” Jordan said. The couple has two children, Jack, 5 and Lucca, 2. After a crash course from the Nicholsons about the ins and outs of harvesting and distilling lavender, the Schiefens harvested late-blooming lavender for the first time in September. “It was a steep learning curve, but we love it,” Paul said. And nearly a year later, is that love still alive? Yes, Paul assures. Living on the farm has been all the family had envisioned. The children love

it, including gathering eggs from a recently added chicken coop. The chickens, Paul said, have been named — “they are pets.” Jardin du Soleil is the Schiefens’ full-time job, which includes caring for the farm, the children and creating new lavender products. One goal is to add a line of children’s lavender products and have more T-shirts available. Building a barn for more hands-on experiences is on the back burner. To be sure, it’s been a busy year for the Schiefens. They’ve had a steady stream of relatives curious about a lavender farm and after opening to the public in April, have had a fair number of tourists and customers drop by. Jordan and Paul were in Sequim for last year’s Farm Faire, so had an idea of what to expect for the Sequim Lavender Weekend. “We were excited and terrified, at the same time,” Paul said, preparing for the weekend. While the look and feel of Jardin du Soleil will remain the same as it has for the past dozen years, Jordan and Paul look forward to greeting visitors to what is now their farm. Jardin de Soleil Lavender Farm is at 3932 Sequim-Dungeness Way. For more information, visit www.jardindusoleil.com or call 360-582-1185. See Jardin du Soleil activities on page 53.

• Lavandula x intermedia “Grosso” – A semi-tall plant with dense midgreen to gray foliage. Flowers are on a long stem, conical in shape and violet-blue to dark violet in color. Used as an ornamental or hedging plant, as well as for fragrance and oil purposes. It is one of the most popular oil plants because of its high-yielding spikes.

Lost Mountain LAVENDER The owners of Lost Mountain Lavender since December 2011, Monica Quevedo and Ray Veihl have the feeling they’ve found their own piece of heaven in the 3-acre farm brimming with more than 100 varieties of lavender and 1,200 plants. They discovered the Sequim-Dungeness Valley as many transplants do. “We have friends who live here, came to visit and fell in love with the Pacific Northwest,” Quevedo said. “We saw at last year’s lavender weekend that the farm was for sale. We’re not retired, but it seemed like the right thing to do.” Compared to the urban sprawl of Orange County, Calif., that they were used to, the farm is an oasis of flora and fauna — the heady scent of lavender from summer into fall, the bounty of its well-established fruit orchard in autumn and wildlife just outside their windows year-round. Last summer, feeling they weren’t quite ready to host hundreds of visitors, the couple spent planting and weeding, “basically working in the dirt,” Quevedo said with a smile. “It’s work but in a good way,” she said. “But it’s not like work,” Veihl added, noting they do plan to plant more lavender. In addition to digging in the dirt, Quevedo said her other favorite thing is meeting local residents and tourists alike. They also jumped into learning how to make Lost Mountain’s signature products,

all sold out of their onsite store, The Cottage Gift Shop. Bath and body products include soaps, lotions, bath salts and gels, spritzers, essential oil and lip balm. For a dash of soothing lavender around the home, there are sleep pillows, potpourri, sachets, lavender and rose linen water, linen bags and candles. Culinary lavender, herbs de Provence and lavender-infused honey also are available. “We make all the products here and we’re a pesticide-free farm,” Quevedo said. “I also make and sell gift baskets.” All the

products also are available online at www.lostmountainlavender.com. This year Lost Mountain Lavender Farm is on the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire farm tour and Quevedo and Veihl say they are a bit nervous but excited but about their first lavender weekend. “The group (Sequim Lavender Farmers Association) has been really helpful — we were part of the lavender conference in April and we learned a lot,” she said. With views of the majestic Olympic Mountains, the farm’s signature attractions are an established demonstration garden with 80 varieties of lavender, as it makes such a visual impact on visitors, the orchard open for picnicking to visitors and a running waterwheel, a favorite place for photos. Quevedo and Veihl hope tour attendees are as excited as they are to have Lost Mountain Lavender back on the tour and will make themselves at home — there will be music, good food and wine and several venders. After getting their first Sequim Lavender Farm Faire under their belts, then it’s on to harvest in the fall. “It’s a big challenged,” Quevedo said, “but we’re looking forward to it.” The farm is conveniently located 1.5 miles south of U.S. Highway 101 at 1541 Taylor Cutoff Road. OLYMPIC LAVENDER
Looking forward to celebrating lavender
After 15 years of showing off her lavender fields, Mary Borland-Liebsch is nonetheless excited for year 16. Although Borland-Liebsch and her husband, Bruce, work their lavender farm nearly year-round, the “official” lavender season opens with this year’s 16th annual celebration of the purple plant and the second Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. “We look forward to this weekend every year,” Borland-Liebsch said. “I like talking to the people who visit and to answer their questions.” This will be Bruce Liebsch’s third lavender fair. He said it is still a bit new to him. The two were married in 2010 after both lost their spouses to cancer. The first Farm Faire for Liebsch was a baptism by fire, as he had not had much experience farming, much less growing and cultivating lavender. But he jumped in garden gloves first and, along with his wife, is looking forward to this year’s Farm Faire. To be sure, growing lavender is labor intensive. However, with a decade and a half under her belt, Borland-Liebsch admits it’s easier than when she first began. Back in 1996, she and her late husband, Steve, along with other farmers interested in growing lavender, met to talk about … well, growing lavender and possibly hosting a lavender weekend in Sequim. With five acres, the Borlands decided to plant some lavender. The first year they planted nine rows of Provence lavender.
“We were living in Main’s Farm, so we were going back and forth from home to the farm,” Borland-Liebsch remembers. That first summer turned out to be very hot and the irrigation was turned off, so watering the new lavender plants had to be done by hand. Yes, Borland-Liebsch admits, they wondered what they were thinking. By 1999, more lavender was planted and a studio was added that was used for drying lavender. Eventually BorlandLiebsch began selling lavender products and opened the farm for the summer season as well as the lavender weekend. The couple moved to the farm in 2007.
Story by MARY POWELL
Today, three fields are dedicated to growing lavender. “I never would have thought I would look out at fields of lavender,” she said. “It’s the last thing I thought I would ever do.” Olympic Lavender Farm is a certified organic farm that has not only lush lavender fields, but also a panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains. As any lavender farmer will attest, the weather conditions on the North Olympic Peninsula are perfect for growing lavender, mild winters and warm summers. The farm offers a variety of True and English lavender and will have plenty available, both U-pick and already harvested, as well as soaps and other certified lavender products. As much as the couple are enthused about the Sequim Lavender Weekend, they do have the farm up for sale. They say they are not unhappy, but ready for a change. “I’m ready to have my summers free,” Borland-Liebsch said. “This is a yearround job.” Don’t worry, if and when the farm sells, the couple plans to stay in Sequim and enjoy retirement. In the meantime, they plan to enjoy every minute of the Sequim Lavender Weekend, meeting new friends and connecting with former ones. Olympic Lavender Farm is at 1432 Marine Drive. For more information, visit www.olympiclavenderfarm.com or call 360-683-4475. See Olympic Lavender Farm activities on page 55.

PORT WILLIAMS LAVENDER FARM For eight years, the expansive 9-acre Port Williams Lavender Farm has been part of the Heritage Lavender Farm Tour during the annual Sequim Lavender Weekend. And Sue and Michael Shirkey, owners of the lush lavender farm, say they’re looking forward to many more years on the farm. “We still love it,” Sue Shirkey said of both working the farm and hosting visitors during the lavender weekend. “We enjoy being involved in agritourism and meeting people from all over the world.” Indeed, during the annual lavender event, Sequim’s population can swell by as much as 35,000 lavender-lovers, which it has done so for the past 15 years. This year’s Sequim Lavender Farm Faire marks the 16th year of festivities as part of the Sequim Lavender Weekend. Like many a lavender farmer, spring found the Shirkeys out in the fields, weeding, rotating crops and creating new features for the summer Faire. “This year the plants are filling out beautifully with an abundance of lavender spikes,” Sue said, referring to last year’s wet, cool spring and summer. A good mixture of sun and rains this spring is just what nature ordered for an exceptional crop of the purple plant. The Shirkeys purchased the land that became the Port Williams farm in 2000, after discovering lavender farming on earlier visits to the area. Sue was working with Horizon Air at the time and Michael as an engineer at Boeing. They both enjoyed farming and were looking for about five acres to keep them busy after retirement. Like many local lavender farmers, the 26
A tranquil way of life
Shirkeys joined the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association and decided to put in “just a few” lavender plants. And, also like other lavender farmers, a few turned into more and then more and before they knew it, they were growing rows upon
rows of lavender. At first, the couple admitted they didn’t really know much about growing lavender. “We do what we do because we love digging in the dirt and talking to people,” Sue said. But it didn’t take long before the alluring purple fields began to draw visitors, family and friends to the farm. And it’s no wonder. Port Williams Lavender Farm is situated just outside Sequim, just far enough so to be away from busy city life, yet close enough for a quick trip to town. Surrounded by acres of farm field and views of the Olympic Mountains, deer, elk, eagles and Canadian geese — and people — are welcome guests. “My farm is peaceful and tranquil,” Sue said. “It’s the way we like it.” Sue said the farm has brought her family closer and that the annual lavender weekend has become a time for
Story by ASHLEY MILLER
a family reunion for her three brothers and their families. “We are truly a family business in every sense of the word,” Sue said. “We couldn’t do it without them (family).” At Port Williams Lavender, the Shirkeys distill all their own oil and process all of their dried lavender bundles and lavender buds. Michael works the portable 100-gallon still, build by lavender pioneer Robert Norman, that he uses to distill their lavender into essential oil. Their oil is used in all of their products, i nc l ud i ng s p r i t z e rs, lotions and handcrafted goat’s milk soap. During the Farm Faire, Michael will be conducting allday demonstrations of the process of distilling lavender into lavender essential oil. Arts and crafts vendors, live entertainment, plenty of food, and of course, plenty of time to wander the acres of lavender plants is just a smattering of activities guests can expect during the three-day Farm Faire at Port Williams Lavender Farm. Sue and Michael continue to tweak the farm, adding a greenhouse here, a blueberry patch there, a new U-pick section and planting new varieties of lavender and flower gardens. It’s a neverending process, but one the Shirkeys want to continue. Yes, for Port Williams Lavender Farm’s owners, it’s definitely eight years and counting on more. Port Williams Lavender Farm is at 1442 Port Williams Road. For more information, visit www.portwilliamslavender.com or call 360-582-9196. See Port Williams Lavender Farm activities on page 56. PURPLE HAZE LAVENDER farm Unlike most of the lavender farms in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, Purple Haze Lavender Farm is not easily seen from the roadway. Instead, the rolling hills of blooming purple plants beckon those who follow the scent of lavender down the intriguingly named Bell Bottom Road. Closest to Sequim’s city center, Purple Haze Lavender is at once nearly hidden, yet easy to find, especially during the annual Sequim Lavender Weekend. Just follow the steady stream of cars and tour buses for those looking to experience a little bit of country at the edge of the city. And once you arrive, it’s a happening place. Typically the farm hosts about 25 vendors and artisans, seven or so bands, serves up its famous lavender margaritas and cosmopolitans and boasts five flavors of ice cream, lavender included. On more than one occasion, Purple Haze has been described as a destination, not just a stop along the way. Wearing a baseball cap stating “Real men wear lavender,” owner Mike Reichner said he and his farm managers create an experience for folks to remember and to share with friends and relatives. However, Reichner doesn’t take all the credit for the farm’s success. “Our staff is amazingly loyal, hardworking, dedicated and honest,” he said. Case in point, general manager Vickie Oen has worked with Purple Haze Lavender for 12 years. This is the 16th year owners Mike and Rosalind Reichner have opened their farm for the lavender weekend, specifically the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire tour of Heritage Farms. Mike is surprised at the continued success of the lavender weekend and how it has grown over the years. SE QUI M LAVE NDE R FAR M FAIR E 2 0 1 2
An unforgettable purple experience About 250 people showed up at the first one 16 years ago. Now, upwards of 30,000 visitors wander about the farms. Back in the day when local farmers were looking for a new crop to help sustain Sequim’s rural character, grow-
ing and cultivating lavender became the vision. Mike was an ardent advocate of the vision and is one of the founders of the lavender movement. That was nearly 20 years ago and today lavender has become a worldwide agritourism market. A retired state park ranger, Mike began his lavender business with 19 plants on 2.5 acres, selling the first bundles off the front porch. Today, Purple Haze sits on 12.5 acres, with 40,000 and 50 varieties of lavender plants. Throughout the years, the farm itself has grown with the number of laven-

der plants. Demonstration gardens, an orchard, pond, seating areas, a drying shed and an entertainment stage all have been added since those first days of porch-selling lavender. In 2001, Mike and Rosalind opened their retail store in downtown Sequim, where year-round sales and shipping of Internet orders takes place. Their signature lavender salad dressing is now sold at retail outlets across the United States. Along with being featured in several national magazines, Mike appeared on a 2010 segment of Good Morning America, touting the beautiful lavender in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Last year, the couple added a covered distilling station that houses the 400-gallon distiller. Mike said watching the distiller in action was a popular attraction. “The ground rumbles when it’s going,” he said. What’s new this year? “We are the same Purple Haze everyone has come to know and love,” Oen said. Visitors should not pass up the opportunity to enjoy all of the experiences they have come to expect at Purple Haze. “We really look forward to the Faire,” Oen said. “We love sharing the farm with everyone who comes here. There is a happiness at this time of year.” Mike agrees. “Expect a total sensory overload when you get out of your car at our farm,” he said. “The Purple Haze experience is unforgettable.” Purple Haze Lavender Farm is at 180 Bell Bottom Road. SUNSHINE HERB & LAVENDER farm Location, location, location. The familiar adage comes to mind when considering Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm. With its large red barn, white picket fence and rows of carefully manicured lavender plants, it is, after all, the first of many lavender fields most tourists see when coming into Sequim. But for Carmen and Steve Ragsdale, owners of Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm, it’s more than geographic location. It’s all about the lavender — growing it, cultivating it, cooking with it and showing it off to visitors. The Ragsdales have been doing just that — showing off the farm — for the past six years during the annual Sequim Lavender Weekend. This will be their seventh and both look forward to “talking lavender.” “We really enjoy talking to the people,” said Steve, who admits growing lavender is a lot of work. “But,” he adds, “we like doing it, this is our lifestyle. We were never meant for sitting back in our retirement. This farm is our retirement.” The couple began growing lavender on a 1-acre plot at their home in Kitsap County many years ago. When they outgrew that space, they started looking for land in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. They purchased what is now Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm in 2000 with the plan to grow lavender. Today, the 10-acre farm has 65 varieties of lavender with more than 8,000 plants in the ground. There is a gift shop, espresso stand, ice cream shop and more than 900 natural products, including soaps, lotions and handmade items for the home and even lavender products for kitty or doggy. Like all those on this year’s farm tour, as part of the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, the Ragsdales are planting more lavender. 32
Growing high quality, Dungeness Valley lavender
They have built a new greenhouse to accommodate the many varieties of lavender grown and processed on site. Unfortunately, they lost their original greenhouse this past winter when too much snow accumulated on the roof and it collapsed. Future plans include building three more greenhouses. Carmen has a passion for cooking with
lavender. She has published several cookbooks with recipes showcasing the farm’s herbs and lavender. Experimenting with lavender and herbs, she has created some unusual ways in which to use lavender to enhance the flavor of a dish. From desserts to salads, soups, entrees, jams and bread, Carmen has a way of seasoning with lavender. And if you think you couldn’t eat lavender, think again. “People who say they don’t like lavender in their food have changed their minds,” she said, when she serves a dish seasoned with lavender. “Lavender enhances the flavor if it’s done right— lavender is like any other herb and has been used for thousands of years to enhance the flavor of food.”
Story by MARY POWELL
Carmen, along with other well-known cookbook authors, will give cooking demonstrations throughout the three-day Farm Faire. There is more to culinary lavender than meets the eye, or, maybe the palate. First, not all lavender varieties are suitable for culinary purposes. Second, lavender used for cooking must be high-grade and cleaned properly. In January 2011, President Barack Obama signed into law the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, the most sweeping reform of food safety laws in more than 70 years. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from contamination to preventing it. This year, trial lavender samples from Sequim Lavender Farmers Association farms were tested by a contracted independent lab and came back with a grade of 97 percent clean, higher than many well-known production crops. “It shows just how clean the lavender grown and processed by the Sequim Lavender Farmers is, we really do take a lot of pride and care in what we do,” Steve said. “This test is the beginning of a new program the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association will be launching in the fall called Sequim Certified. It will give the consumer confidence in the purity of the lavender used in our products.” The Ragsdales distill and process all of the lavender they grow and will be distilling on site during the Faire. Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm is at 274154 Highway 101. For more information, visit www.sunshinelavender.com or call 360-683-6453. See Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm activities on page 58.

GEORGE WASHINGTON INN & washington LAVENDER About halfway between Sequim and Port Angeles, along Finn Hall Road, the stately George Washington Inn bedazzles passersby and visitors alike. It does, after all, closely resemble George and Martha Washington’s mansion 2,000 miles away at Mount Vernon, near Alexandria, Va. As if the sight of the inn isn’t enough, when the fields of lavender are in bloom during the summer months, travelers find it difficult to resist driving along the flower-lined driveway leading up the inn, the farm and the gift shop. The best time of all to explore the George Washington Inn and Washington Lavender is, of course, during the Sequim Lavender Weekend, and owners Dan and Janet Abbott encourage visitors to stop by the farm during the three-day festival and to brings friends as well. T he b o ld a nd beautiful waterfront inn is one of seven farms on tour during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire this year. Tickets may also be purchased for catered High Tea on the oceanfront piazza ($32.50) or a guided tour of the inn ($10). More than 2,000 lavender plants are planted in multiple fields and line the 1,200-foot driveway on each side. The contrast between the dark purple plants and the snow-white structure is breathtaking, not to mention the Strait of Juan de Fuca peeking out at guests from behind the inn. Ten years ago, the Abbotts relocated from South Carolina to build and manage the Mount Vernon-inspired inn. They purchased the initial five acres in 2002 after reading an article in the Wall Street Journal about Sequim and later bought an additional five acres to open the bed and breakfast. While the floor plan is not an exact replica of the founding father’s home, the exterior is almost identical. The only really obvious differences are an enclosed veranda on the north SE QUI M LAVE NDE R FAR M FAIR E 2 0 1 2

side and the front portico with pillars. The main floor of the home serves as common areas for the guests and also houses one guest suite — Martha’s Retreat. The upstairs contains the other four guest suites: the Presidential and General’s Suites and the Surveyor’s and Mount Vernon Retreats. Dan splits his time between Sequim and
the East Coast. His goal is to retire from his job as a financial advisor after the inn becomes successful and profitable enough to support itself and the family. Janet keeps busy as the innkeeper and making lavender products from their farm. The Finn Hall Road property has a unique history of its own. A man-made ditch in the ground not far from the inn once served as a machine gun nest during World War II to guard against the Japanese, according to neighbor John Jarvis, a Sequim resident since 1931. When people ask Dan Abbott, “Why lavender?” he responds with, “Why not?” “Lavender is the most versatile herb with its anesthetic, aromatic and culinary properties,” he said. “There are so many ways to develop the product taken from the lavender plant.” Once the inn was up and running, the Abbotts experimented with planting different berries and fruit trees, but lavender won

them over and was found to thrive in Sequim’s unique climate. The farm has become a vital part of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association and will be on the Heritage Lavender Farm Tour for its second year. As the event approaches, Dan Abbott has a better understanding of what it takes to make it all happen. Last year they were the “new kids on the block,” but found it exciting to share the inn and lavender farm with the community and tourists. Friends and family came to help. “When we bought the property 10 years ago it was just a worn-out hay field,” Janet Abbott said. “We never set out to do this originally. It’s evolving and we find it fulfilling to see how it has come together.” The inn has a small lavender gift shop that is open year-round for guests or by appointment. The couple also decided to convert the three-car garage of the carriage house and transform it into a larger, seasonal gift store. Products include lavender basics such as soaps, lotions, bath salts, candles, teas, spices, essential oils, sachets and pillows as well as several new products that have been added this year – all handmade and marked with the “Martha’s Own” or “By George” labels. Like so many successful couples, Dan and Janet Abbott balance each other. He’s the “visionary” of the relationship and she’s the “one who makes it work.” As they walk the property and enjoy its incredible panorama, they hold hands and smile at each other, reflecting on all that they’ve accomplished together over the past decade. George Washington Inn & Lavender Farm is at 939 Finn Hall Road. For more information, visit www.walavender.com or call 360452-5207. See Washington Lavender Farm activities on page 60. 35

cally enhanced sound quality last year, we have booked a weekend of music that will fill the lawn with great sounds from jazz to rock to country and more. Bring your garden chairs and blankets and picnic on the lawn. Our food booths are very near the amphitheater and the wine and beer garden has seating overlooking the stage. we are pleased to bring back is Pearl Django in cooperation with The BrokersGroup. On Friday Pearl Django will perform at the James Center stage during the day, and in the evening at Jazz in the Alley downtown. Now in its 17th year of performing, Pearl Django continues to be one of America’s most respected and busiest Hot Club style groups. Though still strongly influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt, Pearl Django’s repertoire includes many original compositions. Its music reaches out across the divides of taste to a wide variety of audiences. The band’s fervent followers include Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli fans, guitar enthusiasts (and guitarists!) lovers of string music, including bluegrass devotees, who relish nimble, clean, intricate picking, “world music” fans drawn to French and Gypsy accents, plus jazz buffs and aficionados of the new swing music. The 133rd Army Band We are honored to have been selected for a performance by the 133rd Army Band, based at Camp Murray. This is a diverse group of musicians and ensembles, which serve the community and represent the Washington National Guard to audiences across the state. Members of the band range in age from their late teens to mid-50s and represent a wide cross-section of our community. These soldier/musicians are special people who possess a rare mix of both military and artistic abilities. This mix is best expressed in the acronym “BAND LDRSHIP”, which represents both Band Values and the Army Values.

A legacy of lavender What better way to celebrate the local family owned lavender farms than to incorporate each into an original painting? This year’s official artwork selected for the Farm Faire is the creation of Port Townsend artist James Lyman. Titled “Sequim Lavender Legacy,” the painting incorporates icons from each of this year’s participating farms in the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association. Lyman said the idea to have each of the farms represented in the poster was at the suggestion of his wife, Terree. Scott Nagel, executive director of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association, decided to make the unique painting not only the cover for the official Farm Faire program, but to make it an interactive part of the Faire itself. “People are going to have great fun with this painting as they visit our farms and Lavender in the Park to identify the images that represent the farms and their legacy,” Nagel said. As for Lyman, he said he is honored to be part of the fair and to have his painting selected for this year’s official poster. “We go every year and wander around the farms,” he said. “It’s a great time for the community of Sequim.” Early on, Lyman, who grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, had aspirations of becoming an artist, but his road to the easel took a few detours along the way. “I wanted to be an artist for Walt Disney,” he told his teachers when they asked what he wanted to be when he got older. However, in 1957, after a friend joined the Army, he opted for adventure and put his art career on hold. He served in the Army for 24 years, but often found time to draw. During his time in Vietnam he said he wished he had time to draw. “The temples and buildings were fantastic.” While in Germany, stationed at Man-
nheim and Heidelberg, he went back to school, majoring in culinary arts, business management and, you guessed it, art. “Again, the castles and intimate little streets in the 600-year-old towns gave way to my pen and ink, and in no time, I was selling my work,” Lyman said of his time at
school in Germany. After his two-decade career in the Army, Lyman spent the next 20 years owning, managing and being a chef in several restaurants. The restaurant business eventually brought him to Port Townsend. “I started doing my pen and ink again off and on between chef positions,” he said. But there was another calling on the horizon. He decided again to go back to school, this time to become an ordained minister in

the Baptist faith. For the past seven years he has been leading services at the Evangelical Bible Church in Port Townsend, in addition to continuing his art business. “I am now enjoying the best of two worlds, serving my Lord and painting for him,” Lyman said. Lyman has had a passion for painting buildings, but has specialized in painting lighthouses and barns and Victorian homes. Look closely at the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire poster and sure enough, there in the far background is the Dungeness Lighthouse. Lyman is married — “to the greatest woman in the world” — has four children, six grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. As well as enjoying his family and congregation, Lyman sings in a gospel quartet, and as he puts it, “am actively pursuing retirement, although I’m a lot better painting and singing than I am at being retired.” “It’s such an honor to be chosen as the artist to paint the 2012 Farm Faire, that sometimes I can’t understand what I did to deserve it,” Lyman said. “Then I look back over the years that I’ve looked forward to and prayed to become an artist recognized for my work, that it just proves my point … God answers prayer on his timetable.” He said he’s excited that he’s in the same company as last year’s poster artist, Pat Taynton of Sequim. “She is a super person and to be put in that category is cool,” Lyman said. Lyman will sign posters and sell limitededition prints at Lavender in the Park during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire.

Farm Faire lavender in the park All FAMILY, ALL WEEKEND, ALL FREE!
AT CARRIE BLAKE/REUSE DEMONSTRATION PARK Immerse yourself in the essence of lavender, surrounded by the lush green lawns and gardens of Sequim’s most beautiful park … for an hour or for the day. And this weekend you also can experience art, music from the band shell, stunning crafts, the finest foods, beer and wine, and festivities for everyone … especially the kids. The Faire’s Lavender in the Park site also is the hub for the famous Faire Farm Tour Buses and the In-City Shuttle Bus that connects all of the lavender events and event parking lots in Sequim. Getting here is easy – the free In-City Shuttle service takes you right to the band shell or you can park right next to the Carrie Blake/Reuse Demonstration Park ($2 suggested donation with a portion of the proceeds supporting the Sequim High School Band Boosters). There are so many fun lavender and community festivities going on at our free Lavender In The Park that we had to make you a list! Ciscoe returns to the opening ceremonies – Friday, July 20, 11:30 a.m. – The patriotic sounds of the 133rd Army Band from Camp Murray will bring our community together at the Opening Ceremonies at the James Center Amphitheater. And, if that were not enough, we welcome to our opening ceremonies, Northwest master gardener and media personality, Ciscoe Morris. Ciscoe loves lavender – ooh la la! We will honor our veterans and our community with a program of patriotic and band standards and, of course, a shower of lavender buds. Juried Crafts, Lavender & Community Booths – Over 100 booths feature lavender products and plants, juried hand-made crafts, food, community organizations and family activities. Please see page 68 for a list of vendors. Food – 14 of the region’s best food booths, including seafood (oysters, clams, salmon, chowder, fish tacos, calamari, fish and chips!), crepes, pizza, gyros, espresso, Thai, barbecue, Italian, lavender desserts, lavender ice cream, strawberry shortcakes, and more. We have lots of tables and chairs for seating. Please see page 52 for a complete menu. The New Lavender Tea Garden – presented by one of the founding members of the Sequim lavender movement, Cedarbrook Lavender and Herb Farm, the tea garden provides traditional teas and lavender desserts. Wine and Beer Garden with Lavender Wine and Lavender Hard Cider – Sponsored by Olympic Peninsula Wineries and Olympic Distributors Olympic Peninsula Wineries presents a selection of two wines from each of their member wineries, available for tasting by the glass or to purchase by the bottle. Wineries include: Black Diamond Winery, Camaraderie Cellars, Eaglemount Winery, Fair Winds Winery, Finnriver Farm and Cidery, Harbinger Winery, Olympic Cellars, Wind Rose Cellars. Check out the real “local lavender wine” made by Olympic Cellars Winery. Their La Mélange Nouveau, 46
“The New Blend,” features the infusion of the “Melissa” lavender species from Purple Haze into their coastal varietal Müller-Thurgau wine. Always know the winemaker! Finnriver Farms is creating a special limited edition Lavender Black Currant Infused Botanical Hard Cider that will only be offered at the Faire’s Wine & Beer Garden. Regional micro brews on tap include selections from Pike Brewing Company, Fish Brewing Company, Snoqualmie Brewing Company, Two Beers Brewing Company, and Leavenworth Biers. Music – Thanks to the amazing acoustic qualities of the James Center band shell, music at Lavender in the Park is a special experience. We have great Northwest artists playing throughout the weekend including Pearl Django and the 133rd Army Band on Friday. Sit on the lawn, bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and absorb the sounds. Please see page 40 for a complete schedule. Hot Air Balloon – Sequim Balloon Festival – The new Sequim Balloon Festival will have two hot air balloons tethered throughout the weekend at Lavender in the Park at Carrie Blake/Reuse Demonstration Park (weather permitting). During Sequim Lavender Weekend There will be a private hot air balloon wedding and 40 rides available at the park. Hugh “Bullshot” Crummond for the favor of the lovely Rosemary Fenton, whose father is being tortured in a dark and gloomy castle. Exploding dynamite, sword fights, crashing planes and car chases make this crazy comedy the perfect family fun. “Laughter is contagious,” says director Debbie Embree “and in these serious times it truly is the best medicine.” Come share with us in this wonderful Olympic Theatre Arts production of “Bullshot Crummond.” Tickets available at www.olypmictheatrearts.org.

Although Cathy and Leeon Angel have not had their iconic farm on the tour portion for the past five years, they are nearly as busy as when the farm was a popular destination for lavender weekend visitors. The couple might have thought they were on their way to relaxing among their lavender fields, but instead, the Angels continue to grow lavender and sell their products, both locally and with partner The Weary Gardner at their year-round store called All Things Lavender at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. “The store (in Seattle) is going strong,” said Cathy, whose had the store for nine years. “With its location near the waterfront, it’s a big tourist draw.” Now in their 12th year of farming on the North Olympic Peninsula, Cathy and Leeon have added another crop, Clockwise, from top left: The historical goldenseal, which is a me- at Angel Farm; circular lavender dicinal herb. Victor’s Lavender
Victor Gonzales has been growing and propagating lavender for the past 16 years, but says he knew next to nothing about the plant before moving from California to Sequim in 1996. However, his lifelong background in farming gave Victor the knowledge to develop growing practices that have made his lavender plants sought after worldwide. In fact, he has traveled extensively, presenting workshops regarding the propagation of lavender plants. Victor is considered the North Olympic Peninsula’s go-to expert when it comes to growing the purple plant. He has helped many a lavender farmer in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley save entire fields of lavender, giving advice on planting, irrigating and fertilizing techniques. A year ago, he developed a DVD detailing the process of selecting lavender products, as well as harvesting and drying lavender. Victor’s farm is quite different from most of the lavender farms visitors see on the peninsula. There is no distillation of oil or production of lavender products. Instead, it’s all about the plants. “My whole focus is the plant,” Victor says. A wholesale lavender grower and supplier, he truly cares about his customers and what they want. He compares his consulting services to a personalized eight-hour workshop. “When I go into a consulting session, I literS E Q UI M LAV E N D E R FA RM FA IRE 2012
ally start from the ground up to find ways to make their lavender and business healthier,” Victor explains. During the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, Victor will be at Lavender in the Park and give daily demonstrations at Purple Haze Lavender Farm regarding propagation and planting lavender. (See Purple Haze Lavender Farm activity schedule, page 57.) From nothing to reproducing more than one million lavender plants, Victor says he most enjoys helping people select plants that are right for their homes or businesses. “I have to admit, I love it,” he says. For more information about Victor’s Lavender, visit www.victorslavender.com.
Willow Farm/The Weary Gardener
Willow Farm, owned by Lillian and Doug Gimmestad, is one of the pioneer farms of the Sequim lavender movement. The couple planted their first lavender plants in 1994. Fast-forward to 1998 and the year Lillian turned 50. After deciding to be more conscientious about
a healthy lifestyle, she developed a line of body care products using pure vegetable and fruit oils, herbs and flowers, beeswax and pure essential and fragrance oils. No animal products. The recipe stuck, both for the healthy lifestyle and the products. For the past seven years, the products have been available at All Things Lavender, a shop in Seattle’s historical Pike Place Market. The shop is the partnership of Angel Farm and The Weary Gardener and brings premier lavender and lavender products from Sequim. The Gimmestads will have a booth at Lavender in the Park during the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire. In addition to the products sold at All Things Lavender, the couple will feature the artwork of their granddaughter, Taylor Roads. Taylor is a graduate of Sequim High School and is attending the Northwest School of Art. Natural lavender products and artwork from an up-and-coming artist — what better reason to visit the Willow Farm booth at Lavender in the Park? For more information, visit www. thewearygardener@hotmail.com.
Moosedreams Lavender Farms
Owners Elizabeth Norris and Barbara Landbeck have been in the lavender business for a dozen years, but this year, said it was time to retire. Moosedreams was best known for its full line of pet products, marketed under the name Full
Moon Dog. The line included dog shampoo, conditioners, flea powder, a coat mist and for kitties, a catnip pillow and catnip spray. And for the humans, plenty of bath and body products. Elizabeth and Barbara will surely be missed, but they plan to relax and enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

The Sequim lavender movement began in 1995 when a group of passionate gardeners sought to restore the agricultural heritage of the fertile Sequim valley. The Sequim Lavender Farmers Association is a remarkable group that grows and supports the production of premium quality lavender on family owned farms. Today these unified and dedicated farmers are working toward a common goal of preserving and promoting lavender in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and making Sequim the worldwide destination for lavender lovers. Through their passion and dedication, the sweet aroma of lavender in the valley has given the farms international acclaim.
