Head of School's Message Dear Saint Gertrude Family, God bless you and thank you for all you have contributed throughout this past year! Saint Gertrude continues to be an exciting, innovative, and one-of-a-kind school precisely because of your support. Here is just a small sampling of milestones from the 2015–2016 academic year that YOU made happen: • Honored traditions such as Song Contest, May Day, Saint Gertrude’s Feast, Christmas Nativity, Sponsors and Baccalaureate were introduced to a new generation of young women. • Our Robotics Team achieved national recognition at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and Saint Gertrude was the only Richmond school selected to participate in Cisco’s International Girls in Information and Communications Technology Day activities. • Students traveled to Washington, D.C., New York, and Italy, experiencing everything from the National Gallery of Art, to a Broadway show, to visiting the Vatican. • Faculty and staff engaged in conferences and seminars throughout the U.S. and Europe both as presenters and participants, and Saint Gertrude’s powerful Discover Leadership program was

highlighted at the National Coalition of Girls Schools Annual Conference in New York. • Our famed Honors Ensemble was invited to perform throughout the region, including a candlelight concert in Williamsburg, a holiday performance at the Jefferson Hotel, at Nascar, and even before a Squirrels game. • Student athletes competed at regional and state levels in a number of sports, earning multiple AllLIS honors for young women on our field hockey, basketball, soccer and softball teams, and AllConference honors in lacrosse. • Saint Gertrude students excelled in a variety of college prep, honors, and Advanced Placement courses, and our 2016 graduates were accepted at prestigious institutions as diverse as Georgetown, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, and University of Limerick (Ireland).

Dear Friends of Saint Gertrude, It is my honor as outgoing Chair of the Board of Visitors to report that Saint Gertrude High School is thriving financially, academically and spiritually! This past year has been one of transition, especially with respect to the school’s leadership. Renata Rafferty, as our new Head, has been enthusiastic in sharing her passion for Saint Gertrude, and her excitement for the School’s future. We initiated our first comprehensive campus master planning process with the assistance of Fielding Nair International, and many of you took time from your busy schedules to share your vision for Saint Gertrude as part of this important undertaking. Our entire Saint Gertrude family joined in numerous events and activities such as Tailgator, Holly Spree, Gator Gourmet, and Envision! to support student programming and our financial assistance fund. Most importantly, you shared our School’s story with the greater Richmond community, inspiring countless new families to consider the value of providing a first-rate, truly all-girl, small-school education, in a school community where Catholic teaching and Benedictine values aren’t just taught, but are lived. On behalf of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia, the Saint Gertrude Board of Visitors, and our entire team of educators, staff, and volunteers, please accept our deepest gratitude for your contributions. Board of Visitors Designated Endowment Funds The following endowment funds were established by the Board of Visitors to honor individuals with a special relationship to the School. Alumnae Scholarship Fund This fund was established to encourage daughters and granddaughters of alumnae to attend Saint Gertrude High School. The scholarship provides tuition assistance each year to one or more current or prospective student in good standing and in financial need. The proceeds from the Holly Spree provide the funding for this scholarship. Planned Giving

Planned giving allows you to make charitable gifts now or after your lifetime while enjoying financial benefits for yourself and your loved ones now. Unlike cash donations, they are typically made from assets rather than from disposable income, and may come to fruition upon your death or during your lifetime.

While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor’s estate. Thus, by definition, a planned gift is any major gift, made during one’s lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial or estate plan. Whether a donor uses cash, appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, etc., the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive and beneficial to both the donor and Saint Gertrude.

Three Types of Planned Gifts •

•

Outright gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash (e.g. stocks whose value has risen since purchase); Gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution (e.g. a charitable remainder trust); Gifts payable upon the donor’s death (e.g. life insurance policy).

Tax Benefits of Planned Gifts

Donors who contribute appreciated property, like securities, receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset, and pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.

Donors who establish a life-income gift receive a tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the assets contributed, minus the present value of the income interest retained; if they fund their gift with appreciated property they pay no upfront capital gains tax on the transfer. Gifts payable to charity upon the donor’s death, like a bequest or a beneficiary designation in a life insurance policy or retirement account, do not generate a lifetime income tax deduction for the donor, but they are exempt from estate tax.
