Faculty Spotlight Faculty Spotlight: Jun Peng PhD At what institution did you do your undergrad and undergraduate work? “I did my undergraduate work in my home country of China. My graduate work and doctoral work was done at State University of New York at Albany.” What is your field of research in? “My field of research is in finance. The areas that I focus is on public budgeting & debt, and pension management. What initiated your interest in this field? “I love the public sector and numbers so it kind of came together on it’s own. I did a lot of research on my own that interested me as I researched more.” What inspired you to want to teach? “I felt like I wanted to teach public finance because students aren’t familiar with it and it is very important in understanding government. I want students to have a SGPP Undergraduate Newsletter Page 4
Faculty Spotlight good understanding of the public sector and how finances in the public sector affect them.” What advice do you have for your future students? “ I want students to be familiar with Excel. Students should be familiar with these basic programs that will benefit them. Try to read newspapers regularly and follow what's going on at the national, state and local level. As you take this class you understand the issues I will discuss a lot better. What do you like to do on your free time? “For an academic profession there is a blurred line between free time, my only obligation is teaching 8 hours a week so I have a lot of free time but I read and write to advance in my research and teach better material to my students. I also like to watch PBS and interesting things that is also related to my academic career. I also exercise to stay fit.” What is one of your greatest inspirations? “In terms of teaching my doctoral advisor, he was very instrumental in me acquiring my degree, he went out of his way to help me and I want to give it back to my students to help them like I was helped.” SGPP Undergraduate Newsletter Page 5
Reminders The 2014-2015 Magellan Circle Scholarship The 2014-2015 Magellan Circle Scholarship application is now available! The Magellan Circle Scholarship is a $500 award made possible through the generous donations of SBS Magellan Circle members.
The Magellan Circle Scholarship is available on Scholarship Universe at: scholarshipuniverse.arizona.edu/ To qualify, a student must:
Be an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Arizona, majoring in one of the programs offered within The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Have a documented level of financial need
Be making satisfactory progress toward their degree
Be enrolled in classes at the University of Arizona during the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters
Recipients will be selected based on a combination of their academic performance and financial need. Students who have received the scholarship in the past can now reapply. Magellan Circle Scholars will be expected to attend a breakfast event on December 11, 2014, where they will have the opportunity to meet their scholarship Patron.

Reminders Dear Juniors and Seniors, We have partnered with Career Services to give our junior and senior majors access to Wildcat Joblink. Wildcat JobLink is a state-of-the-art career management tool, offering UA students access to jobs, internships, and a range of other services including campus interviewing and resume referrals. To access JobLink, please visit the Career Services website at https:// www.career.arizona.edu/joblink. All you need is your NETID and password to login and take advantage of these great services.
Why is SGPP only funding juniors and seniors to have access to JobLink? The funding comes from SGPP Program Fees, which only our junior and senior majors pay. If you are a freshman or sophomore, you are welcome to register and pay the annual $5 fee out of pocket. Visit https:// www.career.arizona.edu/joblink to register. I will be a junior at the end of the current semester. When can I have access? SGPP will be requesting access for any students who have reached 60+ credits each semester after the census date (the 21st day of the semester). So, if you will have 60+ completed credits at the end of this semester, you will be granted access next semester after the census date. SGPP Events Accelerated Master of Public Administration Truman Scholarship Information Session Are you interested in earning a Master’s degree while completing your Bachelor’s degree? Are you interested in earning a Master’s degree, but are unsure of scholarship opportunities?
Interested students are invited to attend the Accelerated Master’s Program and Truman Scholarship Information Session Wednesday, October 29th Social Sciences 311 1-2 PM Pamela Adams, Graduate Programs Coordinator, will discuss SGPP’s dynamic Accelerated Master’s Program requirements and opportunities. Scholarship Advisor Emily Kotay will present information regarding the Truman Scholarship. This scholarship provides funding for graduate school to students who are interested in pursuing a career in public service.

Meet the Court: Judge Miller and Chief Staff Attorney Beth Beckmann James E. Rogers College of Law, Room 138, 11:00 am Arizona Court of Appeals Judge Michael Miller and Chief Staff Attorney Beth Beckmann will speak with a limited number of students before the scheduled oral arguments, providing context for oral arguments before the Court of Appeals Division II and the roles of court staff members throughout the appellate process. Judge Miller previously practiced as a licensed psychologist and has worked in juvenile court and federal and state prisons. As an attorney, he worked in private practice for 17 years in the areas of product liability, commercial, and health care law before joining the bench 12 years ago. Ms. Beckmann also has a diverse background in private practice and juvenile and criminal law, having previously served as a judge pro tempore for the Pima County Juvenile Court and the Juvenile Subcommittee of the Court Improvement Program. This judicial visit will include arguments in 2 cases: Robert Fleming v State of Arizona, AZ. Dept. of Public Safety, Gallivan, and MCA Financial Group, Ltd. v. Enterprise Bank & Trust. Seating in the Ares Auditorium is limited. Priority seating is available for law students, attorneys appearing before the Court, and others with confirmed reservations. Panelists include representatives from the Arizona Diamondbacks, UA Athletics, Randolf Golf Complex, Sports Business Solutions, Tucson Sports and the Arizona Daily Star. Whether you are just considering a career in one of the facets of the Sports industry, or are convinced this career path is your destiny, check out this Networking opportunity, Wednesday, October 15th, 5:30 pm to 7 pm in the Ventana Meeting Room on the 4th floor of the Student Union Memorial Center. Panelists offer career insights that might help you figure out where YOU fit into this exciting field. Panelists will share information on their own career paths, trends in the field and critical skills students should hone. You can look forward to meeting: Bob Hamer, UA '06 (business management), founder and president of Sports Business Solutions, a company that helps students and recent grads gain entry into the sports business. Starting in entry level ticket sales with the Phoenix Suns, Bob rose all the way to Vice President of ticket sales during his eight years there. Mike Dellosa, Dir. of Season Ticket Sales and Inside Sales for the Arizona Diamondbacks, has worked in sales, marketing and management with the Frisco RoughRiders and the Cleveland Browns and has a bachelor’s degree in Sport Business from the University of Mount Union. During college he launched his career through numerous sports business internships. Angel Natal Jr., Dir. of Tucson Sports for Visit Tucson, is responsible for building awareness of Tucson as a preferred destination for all types of sporting events. He has worked closely with baseball, softball and aquatics national governing bodies and youth and amateur organizations on events such as the BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, USA BMX events, Major League Baseball spring training activities and college football bowl games. Dan Wickman, UA '88 (political science), PGA Head Golf Professional at Randolph Golf Complex, one of the busiest public courses in the nation. Dan has nearly thirty years of golf course management experience, has opened or been involved in opening eleven golf properties, and has owned and operated a PGA Certified Golf School. Zack Rosenblatt, UA ’13 (journalism) is a full-time sports reporter for the Arizona Daily Star, focusing on UA athletics, local high school sports, and Pima Community College, Tucson Rodeo and the Accenture Match Play Golf Championships. At the UA, Zack was editor of the Daily Wildcat’s sports section and interned in the sports section of the Courier-Post in New Jersey. Daniel Heck, Associate Dir. of Marketing and New Media for UA Athletics, assists in developing and executing the department’s marketing and new media strategy including email, media/advertising, graphic design and print collateral. Dan also oversees the student internship program and is co-advisor for the UA Sports Marketing Association. A UA Student Services fee grant has made this career panel/networking event series possible. Seating is limited and food and beverage is free!
