Internship Opportunity The City of Tucson’s Immigrant Welcoming Task Force is looking for University of Arizona Spring 2013 interns to help assist in research and policy recommendations that will further Tucson’s mission of developing an Immigrant Welcoming City. On August 7th, 2012, the City of Tucson Mayor and Council passed the Immigrant Welcoming City resolution, encouraging public dialogue around the injurious affects of SB1070 and seeking out ways to make Tucson into a more immigrant welcoming city. A diverse group of faith-based representatives brought the resolution forward, basing their recommendation on the Welcome Dayton Plan. The Dayton plan developed policy initiatives and community conversations around the contributions of the city’s immigrant population, recognizing the importance of immigrants and welcome their valuable skills and contributions. Interns will work with the Immigrant Welcoming Task Force to research policy initiatives and make recommendations to the City of Tucson Human Relations Commission. The Commission will further review these proposals and make formal recommendations to the City of Tucson Mayor and Council. The Immigrant Welcoming Task Force is currently meeting once every two weeks, and will soon begin meeting weekly in an effort to craft well developed goals and policy. Interns will attend meetings and do research in between, eventually helping to structure proposals to be considered by Tucson’s Mayor and Council. The goal of the Task Force will be to have these recommendations established by the summer of 2013.
