Rasheeda S. Liberty t’s time! The time has arrived for the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to share with the world who we are and who we have been for the past 100 years. It should be no secret whether it is a rural community, a large-scale city or an international province that the ladies of royal blue and gold represent vision and progression. Over the past months, the world has already witnessed our remarkable brand story, our explosive growth, and our philanthropic gift of time and treasures. We are just getting started on our road of Greater. In the last months, we have elevated the brand to utilize the word, “Greater.” Our slogan of “Greater Service, Greater Progress” is one that has been the baseline of all that we do. We are not changing or eliminating our slogan. Instead, we are building upon it for the next 100 years. “Greater Women, Greater World” is a shift as we believe that as women are elevated, the world is as well. The key is executing the vision. To do that, we need the help of all members and affiliates to embed this concept. Impact can only be achieved with the efforts to expand our volunteer base. Those who have a community presence and a brand attract like-minded professional women. Attracting those who are leaders, visionaries, and sowers will benefit Sigma and ensure our continued elevation. Enabling the youth through educational programs, empowerment workshops, or simply mentorship moments is a gift defined as progress. Creating inspiration for others is demonstrated through positive engagement in social media, showing others who we are and what we do, and creating testimonials about what sisterhood means to you. It’s the personal touch that will allow us to attract, create impact, and drive inspiration. Over the last years, I personally have learned so much about our Founders and the inspirational moments along the journey to build our sisterhood. There was one common thread in their work and that was: inspiring others to carry out the vision, so that our sisterhood would outlive us and our community impact multiplies. If we follow that formula, we will truly be greater women, creating a greater world for the next 100 years.

FROM THE EDITOR | SPRING 2022
Richelle N. Jones It was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, “you don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Our Illustrious Founders took the first steps in faith, seeing the need for greater education, improved communities, and impactful resources. Now, here we are. What a journey this has been. I am elated to share this edition with you because we are at the cusp of 100 years of Greater Service, Greater Progress and have been appointed for this time to shine a positive light on our incomparable contributions and service to the community. Thank you to our Centennial Rhoyalty, Soror Sudane Ricketts, International Ms. Jamaica 2022, for gracing our Spring cover. Your impact has touched lives globally and we are ecstatic that you chose to share your journey with us. To our life members, one of the integral life lines of our illustrious sisterhood, you make us #Greater and we are honored that you continue to give selflessly to promote the aims of Sigma Gamma Rho. We salute you! Thank you to International Grand Basileus Rasheeda S. Liberty, the International Board of Directors, Executive Director Karen Y. Williams and the staff of International Corporate Headquarters for your support in this role and of The Aurora team. Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV): (9) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (10) Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. In Service,

Official Centennial Block Party
By Gwendolyn Goins
After three years of planning and two venue changes, the family reunion themed Block Party will commence on July 13, 2022, at 5:00 PM, for Centennial attendees, guests, and Indianapolis residents. The celebration will happen at Victory Field which has been featured on TripAdvisor as one of Indianapolis top ten places to visit. The stately ballpark is located on the west side of downtown Indy, nestled in White River State Park. According to visitindy.com, Victory Field has some of the best panoramic views of the downtown skyline. The Block Party is a free, family friendly event that will feature a little something for everyone. Some of the attractions include a philanthropic motorcycle club; a kid’s zone with old school carnival games and
mobile game trucks; and a municipal row complete with a mobile library (library card anyone?). USA Swimming and March of Dimes will be present and there will be local retail vendors, radio station vans, and promotional gifts while supplies last. Photo booths and photo ops with noteworthy guests will enable block party visitors to capture their experiences in real time. Sigma Gamma Rho’s heart for service will be on full display. Not only will national partners be present but the Block Party Day of Service initiative, supported by the Sophisticated Southeastern Region, will present a hefty donation to Hands of Hope which will benefit the Foster Care Unit of
THE RHOAD HOME | SPRING 2022
Indiana’s Department of Child Services. This division serves over 16,000 children in foster care, many of whom are underserved minorities. The donation will be specifically earmarked for the purchase of books with Afrocentric characters and themes, ethnic hair care products and bedding for children of all ages who are placed in group homes and private residences. The atmosphere at this public celebration will be electric with these attractions but this wouldn’t be a party without plenty of music and the Block Party will not disappoint! The infield stage will feature two celebrity DJ’s and a surprise headlining entertainer. The stadium will reverberate with the music of many genres, from old school to new school. There will be plenty of seating with the stadium’s capacity set at over 14,000 and the backfield will be open to lawn chair and blanket dwellers! Come hungry! The first 2,000 guests will receive tickets for two complimentary snacks. Concession stands will be open for food and beverage purchases, including a special Centennial themed chicken sandwich, only available at the Block Party! The top two-tier level Centennial Leadership Givers and sponsorship level VIP’s will have access to the Skyline VIP Lounge where they can enjoy indoor and outdoor viewing of The Block Party. There will be complimentary food, beverages and a few extras to enjoy. The grand finale will be a spectacular firework display lighting up the skyline of downtown Indianapolis. This will be a fitting end to the Block Party and great continuation of Sigma’s Centennial, celebrating 100 years of Scholarship, Sisterhood and Service!

Soror Tommie Randolph, former Basileus and member of the Alpha Upsilon Sigma Alumnae Chapter, East St. Louis, IL says she “unofficially” became a Life Member when she joined the undergraduate chapter of Gamma Beta in 1965. Fifty-six years later she continues to value her membership as she volunteers in the community. Cultured Pearl and Life Member #736, Soror Randolph retired as a high school physical education, health, and science teacher from East St. Louis School District 189 in 2002. Favored and well-known in her community, she decided to “give back” in the form of self-care, line dancing. Soror Randolph remembers going to a line dance class with a friend one day and the teacher was a “no-show.” Since she was a novice to line dancing and repeated the steps aloud to herself, class members asked her to lead the class. She retrieved music from her car and the class resumed. Her skill and dedication for teaching line dancing was revealed and the news quickly spread through the community. Shortly thereafter, she volunteered to teach line dances twice a week at two community facilities. Additionally, organizations would invite Soror Randolph and class members to provide entertainment at local and regional community events. Mandated shutdowns due to the pandemic did not prevent Soror Randolph from performing community service. She sent videos, music, inspirational messages, and sign-ups for virtual physical activities to dance class members until they were able to safely resume classes. Soror Randolph continues to share her passion for dancing with the community and says she will dance into the Centennial providing “Greater Service, Greater Progress!

Soror Ashford says, “Many of us have faced challenging times and we understand the importance of stability and knowing that someone loves you or is thinking of you. I give back because I know that it will make a difference in the life of a child and parent(s) that must start over for whatever reason. Soles 4 Little Souls is about leaving an impact on those who need our help, but who may also grow up to help others in the same or similar ways. It is all about Greater Service, Greater Progress for many of us that serve.”

Soror Linday Ashford, a member of the Alpha Upsilon Sigma Alumnae Chapter, East St. Louis, IL, and Soles for Little Souls Chairperson, has a special connection when it comes to providing resources for children in transition. Before her adoption at age twelve, she personally experienced temporary housing, and packing and leaving in the middle of the night with only the items she could carry. As an active member of SGRHO she vowed to give back to the community. She was able to “give back” this year with the support of her Co-Chairperson, Soror Aimee Hart, her committee, and chapter members. Although Soles for Little Souls was pivoted due to the pandemic, they collected over $1,400.00 in donations and resources to provide shoes, clothing, and games to children and families at the Family Living Center in ESTL.

Upon her return from New York, Soror Runnels expressed, “It was such an honor as a doll collector to be part of an exhibit of this magnitude.” Many of the dolls were between 100 to 200 years old in the exhibit and were made by enslaved Black women and domestic workers. The dolls are incredibly rare, one a kind, and valuable. The exhibit will remain on display at the museum until June 5, 2022. After that, the exhibit will continue to travel throughout the United States and Europe. Soror Runnels has been collecting dolls professionally since 1999. She has a growing online doll collecting community called American Girl Addy Collectors, and a traveling exhibit called Nzuri Black Doll and History Exhibit (www.themobileblackdollandhistorymuseum.weebly. com). Her traveling exhibit’s mission: “…Tells the story of the Black child in America by celebrating and preserving Black art, history, and culture.” While Soror Runnels loves and admires all beautifully made dolls, her focus is on handmade, one-of-a-kind dolls by Black artists .

During this Centennial Year, Soror Constantina Pettway has been on fire to serve where she sees a need while using her platform at the Michigan Department of Health Services. At the beginning of this school year, she noticed there were students in the Detroit school district who did not have everyday necessities to succeed. Her goal was to remove barriers that prevent students from attending school and she wanted to provide items that will instill confidence to help them reach their full potential. Soror Pettway put a call out to the community for monetary donations. She launched a clothing campaign on the Donors Choose website and to maximize donations, the Allstate Foundation matched the monetary donations. She met her goal in less than 24 hours and was able to purchase uniforms for students. Soror Pettway also kept men, women and children warm in Detroit during the winter. She partnered with Burlington Coat Factory and Delivering Good for a coat drive. She collaborated with Triumph Church Detroit to distribute the coats in January. Soror Pettway served approximately 155 people and distributed 220 coats, hats, gloves and scarves. Thanks to Soror Pettway for making a measurable impact in people’s lives. Soror Pettway is the true definition of ‘Greater Service, Greater Progress.’

LIFE MEMBERS Stand Up!
By Dr. Wanda LeFlore
It’s too late now, you’re in it for life. Cherish the sisterhood and embrace the strife. Service to others is part of Sigma Gamma Rho’s pact— volunteering and mentoring without looking back. Life Membership was not an easy task, especially for seven women during the days of, “you do as I ask.” Intentional, innovative, and quite intelligent too—imagine our outreach if Life Membership grew! Devoting a lifetime to sisterhood, scholarship, and service is all that you need to leave an indelible mark in our communities!

Soror Sharon Wilson asks, why a Life Membership? A Ruby and Life Member #1398, she says Life Membership has always been her goal. When life challenges and family obligations became priority, she took a pause from sisterhood, but knew she would return. Soror Wilson relocated from NY to GA during the lowest part of her life and remembers that her Sorors were there to support her. As she matured, she embraced Life Membership as a sign of long-term dedication, service, support, and the pursuit of learning. She believes in the mission of SGRHO and embraces the need to enhance the quality of the life of women and their families and strive to achieve greater service greater progress through SGRHO initiatives. “It’s not only investing in Sigma Gamma Rho, but an expression of my genuine love for the Sisterhood. I’ve had so many “pour” into me; now it’s my time to “pour” into others. SGRHO is truly a Sisterhood like no other” says Soror Wilson.
Melanie Charles
Nu Beta Sigma
Soror Charles’ Sigma journey began March 25, 1992, Kappa Rho Chapter, Pennsylvania State University. She says she could not imagine the trajectory of this thirty years later. This Centennial year she is grateful for Sigma Gamma Rho; being able to enter spaces and represent women of achievement and purpose is beyond rewarding. Soror Charles said that she has grown personally by being a part of this organization and seeing the impact of SGRHO’s work in the communities served. The sisterhood has allowed her to create relationships with women that not only are her sisters but are truly family. These bonds have sustained her and will continue to develop deeper in years to come. She appreciates the sisters who have stood by her through every high and low and is eager to return the favor whenever needed. She is a two term Basileus, four term Anti-Basileus, member of the First Grand Anti-Basileus Committee, Charter Member, and now a Life Member. Reflecting on the meaning of those milestones, she is smiling because she is at a place of peace and accomplishment; a Sigma light that will never be diminished. Soror Charles says, “I cannot wait to continue down this path of service and constant growth.”

Soror Tonishia Holloway applied for Life Membership in 2012; however, after receiving approval, she felt the timing was not right and decided to be still. She often thought about her decision knowing she wanted to show her loyalty to Sigma and obtain the momentous milestone of Life Membership. When she returned to the Sisterhood, she knew the “right time” was the fall of 2017. She attended an area meeting with her application in hand to secure the signature of her Basileus. Soror Holloway immediately submitted it for approval and the journey to Life Membership began.

Foster has served the sorority at the national level as 2nd Grand Anti-Basileus, the local level as 1st Anti-Basileus, 7th Anti-Basileus, Epistoleus, Corresponding Secretary, Parliamentarian, as well as chairing committees. Verna L. Tolden
Alpha Upsilon Sigma
Soror Verna Tolden Life Member #815 remembers two notable events that took place in 1957. The passage of the Civil Rights Act and her induction into the Alpha Chi Undergraduate Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated at AM&N College renamed University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff. Her membership began when she expressed interest in Sigma Gamma Rho and joined an interest group called, “INSIGAROES.” Later she joined the official pledge club, the “Aurora.” After demonstrating her commitment to service, sisterhood, and scholarship she became a Soror. “Once a Sigma, always a Sigma” proclaimed Soror Tolden when she became a Life Member in 2009. “It solidified my goal of remaining in good standing with the sorority for as long as I can.” Although Soror Tolden’s journey began before the birth of millennials, and generations of X, Y, and Z she is a respected member of Alpha Upsilon Sigma, East St. Louis, IL. She is a role model and mentor to AUS members and is often requested to share “herstory” during local and regional events. Soror Tolden was a featured speaker for the AUS 80th Charter Day Celebration and remembers the membership growth from National to International status. A retired school administrator and servant leader, she passionately served positions ranging from Basileus to her current position as Chairperson of Community Outreach. A revered Cultured Pearl, Soror Tolden is extremely proud of her sixty-five-year membership in Sigma and is looking forward to attending and sharing Centennial activities with her legacies: daughter, Andrea P. Tolden-Hughes, granddaughter Pamela Hughes, and nieces Nakeesha Tolden-Mosley and Kayla Berry. A beacon of light for Sigma, she hopes the following quote will inspire the next generation to become loyal Sigmas and Life Members. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. Phil. 4:13.
Shawna Harrell
Kappa Omicron Sigma
Soror Shawna Harrell, Esq. was introduced to Sigma as a high school student when she saw one of her childhood friends wearing royal blue and gold with Greek letters that looked like ETP. When she inquired about the organization her friend told her to research the sorority when she went to college. On campus she obtained a work study job, joined student government and the judicial board but was still curious about sorority life. She attended a “Meet the Greeks” event with friends. Soror Harrell said that each group had a different vibe, and some groups were more welcoming than others, so she left the event wondering if sorority life was really for her. A week later she attended a Broad Street Sweep community service event. When the volunteers divided into groups, young ladies asked if she wanted to collaborate with them, and she agreed. She bonded with the volunteers and had a great community service experience. Weeks later Soror Harrell said one of the ladies from the event saw her walking and called her name. She was impressed that the volunteer remembered her name and surprised that she was wearing royal blue and gold Sigma Gamma Rho paraphernalia. That was the beginning of her Sigma journey, and she was inducted into the Beta Delta Chapter at Temple University in 2000. Soror Harrell, Life Member #1278 hails from the Notable Northeast Region and is a charter member of the Kappa Omicron Sigma located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She is a past Area 6 Coordinator, past Regional Rhoer Coordinator, current International Life Member liaison, and proud Philo Advisor. A licensed attorney and Coordinator of Child Protective Services for the Milton Hershey School, Soror Harrell also is a member of the Dauphin County Children and Youth Advisory Board. She looks forward to becoming a Centennial Ruby!

She returned home to Chicago after graduating with a Chemical Engineering degree and continued servant leadership. She became Life Member #530 as soon as she was eligible because she was invested in sisterhood and wanted to proudly highlight her membership through this distinction. Soror Watkins-Asiyanbi stays invested in the sisterhood because she has developed as a Soror and leader through the various situations she has experienced as a Sigma. She also wants to help shape and develop governance and policies that are sustainable in the sisterhood for the next one hundred years. Soror Watkins-Asiyanbi wants to support and mentor the next generation of leaders, and continue to be a role model so others can envision themselves being what they see. Soror Karen Kimber’s, Life Member #803, journey began in 1990 through Gamma Tau Sigma and she has remained financial and active since her induction. On June 29, 2009, she received confirmation that her Life Member application was accepted and approved. She was so excited to join this esteemed group of Sorors. Soror Kimber’s Life Member journey began during her last year as Basileus, and it was extremely important to her to apply and pay for her life membership at that time. In addition, she wanted to encourage other eligible members in her chapter to apply for membership. She said it was important to her legacy as Basileus to increase Gamma Tau Sigma’s voting strength and have a “Greater” voice in the decisions at the regional and national level. During her application process, Gamma Tau Sigma had two Life Members and by the end of her administration, there were seven Life Members, and the voting strength increased to nine. As a Life Member, Soror Kimber also served the Western Region as Nominations and Elections chairperson, as well as chapter Grammateus for multiple terms. She recognizes that life membership has its privileges, bragging rights, and benefits at chapter meetings and conferences, and it is the recognition that Sorors strive to achieve. She says, “My life membership is truly about “Greater Service, Greater Progress” and I am honored to receive this recognition.”
Monica Mathis
Nu Sigma
TWENTY-TWO years ago, Soror Monica Mathis decided to join Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. On February 27, 2000, she became a member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter on the campus of Lane College in Jackson, TN. She quickly observed that this chapter developed leaders and trendsetters. She was in awe with the ladies that matriculated through the chapter and became leaders in their community and the sorority. Soror Helen J. Owens was inducted as the International Grand Basileus in St. Louis, MO at the 2000 Boule. It was exciting to witness a chapter member become the International Grand Basileus. Her journey and involvement encouraged Soror Mathis to stay connected and involved in the sorority. After college, she became inactive so that she could regroup and obtain a steady salary! In 2004, she transitioned to the Nu Sigma Chapter in Jackson, TN and immediately started working and serving the sorority. Soror Mathis said she made a promise to herself, that with God on her side, she would remain active and financial in her chapter. She said since she admired how Life Members were honored and respected at regional and national conferences, that she made a personal goal to become a Life Member to show her love and dedication to SGRHO. In 2016, that dream became a reality, and Soror Mathis is Life Member #1132. In addition to being a Life Member, she is Centennial Basileus for Nu Sigma Chapter in Jackson, TN.

Marier Edwina Cox
Alpha Sigma
As an undergraduate student at Purdue University, Soror Cox said she was extremely impressed with the members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. She recalls attending a rush with four Black sororities and when the Basileus of Epsilon Gamma spoke of the history and expectations of SGRHO, she knew Sigma was her choice. She hails from Indianapolis, IN and the first university she attended was Butler University through a High School Achievement Program. Soror Cox followed the career path of the Seven Founders and majored in elementary education because she knew educators influenced society. Due to her father’s illness, she postponed pledging on campus, but later became a member of the Alpha Sigma Chapter in 1985. She has served as Basileus, held other offices, and served on regional and national committees. During her first Boule in Seattle, Washington under the leadership of Past Grand Basileus Dr. Rejesta V. Perry, Soror Cox learned about life membership and decided to make the commitment. She says that a Life Member is not all about the benefits one can receive, it is about making an impact on Sigma Gamma Rho in a positive way. Her biggest impact occurred as Basileus of Alpha Sigma with the reactivation of the Alpha Chapter on Butler University’s campus in 1992.

Soror Tysha Bryant’s, Life Member #1242, journey into this remarkable sorority began with the Theta Omicron Chapter at the University of Delaware in 1990. She recalls being a young girl looking to serve her community and make an impact on the predominately white campus. During the early campus years, Soror Bryant was a Gammette, connecting with like-minded women striving and thriving in sisterhood. As she reflects on the humble beginnings of her Sigma journey thirtyone years ago, she is in awe of the bonds that formed and that continue to endure to this very day. She is also a proud Ruby Member and said it is truly an honor to be an active and financial member of such a prestigious organization that embodies sisterhood, scholarship, and service. She is grateful for all the Sorors who paved the way, setting a “Greater” standard of success. Soror Bryant looks forward to continuing the work of ensuring that the sisterhood remains dedicated to public service and has a positive impact in the communities in which SGRHO serves. She also states that she will continue to fulfill the mission of “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”

Ashley Branch
Lambda Upsilon Sigma
Soror Ashley Branch was inducted into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated through the Elite Eta Nu Chapter during the Southwestern Regional Conference in 2011. Like a dream come true, she was excited and overwhelmed at the same time. Although she said she never wins anything, Soror Branch won a Herff Jones sorority pin during her first conference. She knew then that SGRHO was for her and enjoyed a weekend of fun, joy, love, and accomplishment. After graduating from college, she was in an unhappy place with Sigma. The undergraduate experience was not what Soror Branch expected, and she was uncertain about staying in the organization. She was unsure if she wanted to remain financially active.
30 | THE AURORA
Although Sorors tried to keep her from becoming inactive, there was still uncertainty. She said one day a spark ignited inside of her and she began missing everything about Sigma. She saw the amazing things her Sorors were doing and saw a sisterhood that set her soul on fire. Since her love and passion for Sigma was back, Soror Branch wanted to do more for the sorority. She wanted to show her love and devotion, so she decided to continue her life commitment by becoming a Life Member. She said it has been the best decision any Sigma Woman could make. Today, she is Soror Ashley Branch, Life Member #1768 and a Military Soror.
Saundra Giles Gaffney Soror Saundra Giles Gaffney Life Member #966, whose Sigma Gamma Rho journey began in 1972, is a member of Xi Sigma Chapter, Spartanburg, SC. Before she was old enough to join a sorority, she knew that she was going to become a SGRHO legacy because her mother, the late Soror Esther Elkins Giles and her aunt, the late Soror Lillie Mae Elkins Hill were members of Xi Sigma. Not only was she inspired by her mother and aunt, but she was also surrounded by SGRHO members in her church and community who upheld the motto, “Greater Service, Greater Progress” and served as role models and leaders. Since Soror Gaffney’s induction, she has taken her pledge seriously and has committed herself to serving her sorority not only on the local level, but also on the regional level. She has been a three term Basileus and has served in other leadership positions. A current advisor for her chapter, becoming a Life Member was not an option for Soror Gaffney. Life Member means commitment and continuous service and that is exactly what she hopes to do. Not only is she a proud Life Member, but during the Centennial Celebration she will become a Cultured Pearl. Greater is coming!

Angela Hampton
Epsilon Nu Sigma
All her life Soror Angela Hampton, Life Member #1340, wanted to be a Sigma woman! After her induction in 2006, she set her sights on becoming a Life Member. Thirteen years later, she achieved her goal, one number behind her legacy and mother, Soror Janet Hampton Life Member #1339. Her message to Toya, Rachel, and Brianna is, “You’re up next!” Her official journey started at Bradley University where the Sigma’s nurtured her. She is grateful for their love, support, and thank God for them. Her mother, Sorors she watched from the Gamma Rho Chapter, and her Zeta Phi Chapter foundation really prepared and inspired her to become one of the youngest Life Members. Soror Hampton takes pride in showing her life membership credentials when Sorors say she is too young. She says Sigma has taught her life lessons and she has met great friends that manifested in the form of Sorors that led her to new experiences. Soror Hampton’s advice to any new young Soror is, “Stay financial and actively involved in a local chapter. Surround yourself with positive Sorors that are interested in your growth and development. Count it a privilege to serve the sisterhood. Save your coins girls! This has been one of my greatest accomplishments within the sorority. I know it is just the beginning!”

Additionally, Soror Malcolm led the Philly area “RHOyal Dynasty 2.0” combined step team through undefeated step show seasons which culminated in the ultimate victory, Step Show Champions, at the 2014 Boule in National Harbor, MD. And yes, they say she still got the moves and the magic to win shows so do not try her! Soror Malcolm served two terms as Alpha Eta Sigma’s 23rd Basileus and was recognized as one of the Philadelphia Tribune’s Most Influential African American Leaders. She was the recipient of the regional and national Award of Achievement for impactful leadership in 2018. She has served on the Northeastern Region Undergraduate Development and Scholarship committees and currently serves the Northeastern Region Board of Directors as the 2020-2022 Area VI Coordinator, assisting with chapters in Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. A sister, mentor, confidante, friend, and servant leader, her greatest Sigma accomplishment is fulfilling her lifelong commitment to Sigma instilled in her as an undergraduate, becoming a Life Member.
Andrea R. Magee Davis Soror Andrea Magee Davis, Life Member #1692, began her Sigma journey as a twenty-year-old at the University of Southern California. As she sends a Shout Out to the Elite Theta Epsilon Chapter, she remembers that taking a pledge to be an active and financial member for life is “heavy” at that age. However, no matter how life shifted (and she says it did shift), she remembered the pledge and did everything she could to honor it year after year. Soror Magee Davis celebrates twenty years as a member of SGRHO by deciding to support her sorority and the principles that she holds dear, for a LIFETIME. She did it just in time to celebrate the #RHOadtoCentennial. She says this is a proud moment because she “grew up” with phenomenal Life Members as mentors and examples and she is honored to join them in becoming an example for other Sorors. She is excited and congratulates the new wave of Life Members.

THE SOPHISTICATED SOUTHEASTERN REGION – BE THE MATCH, SAVE A LIFE In a world full of possibilities, it is unknown to us where or when our next blessing will come. Some of us wait days while others must wait years upon years in order for their prayer to be answered. In the end, it is their diligence and belief that has proven them more than worthy in God’s eyes to be blessed. On October 7, 2021, Southeastern Region Youth Services Coordinator Kristian-Zani Eatman, was able to help answer the prayer of a stranger. Someone she never knew, but just so happened to stumble upon. Outside of a Publix parking lot, she came across an advertisement on a car for a woman in need of a kidney. She read the ad and wanted to know more about the situation, so she waited for the owner of the car to return. In five minutes, the owner of the car returned. Ms. Cassandra Fells had been searching for a kidney for the past seven years, and there standing in front of her was a young woman, eager to know more about how she could be of service. Madam YSC and Ms. Fells spoke briefly that day and had over-the-phone discussions about her search for a kidney, leaving Madam YSC stunned and amazed about the strength she has had to have in order to overcome the adversity Ms. Fells faced. Within the following two weeks YSC Eatman thought endlessly about Ms. Fells, pondering what she could possibly do in order to help. Whether it be to share her story in hopes of finding someone else who could be a suitable donor, becoming a donor herself, or simply praying for her. Fortunately, there were different plans already in place. At the end of July of 2021, YSC Eatman received a phone call from the Be The Match® Foundation. To her surprise, the representative spoke to YSC Eatman in consideration of becoming a donor for a woman in her city, Ms. Cassandra Fells. It was unbelievable that this call had reached her to speak about the same woman she had met only two weeks before, but God doesn’t work in coincidences. The conversation led to YSC Eatman being put in touch with the UAB Kidney Transplant Clinic to begin the process of finding out if YSC Eatman would have the ability to donate. She wholeheartedly went through the process – MRIs, Blood work, X-RAYs. A week later in late August of 2021, YSC Eatman found that she was a perfect match for Ms. Fells. October 7, 2021, Ms. Fells and YSC Eatman underwent surgery at UAB Hospital to complete the kidney
donation. A smooth process that has now altered both of their lives and joined them together. Ms. Cassandra Fells, an exceptional woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Southeastern Region YSC Kristian-Zani Eatman have been joined together as newfound sisters, as well as added a member to one another’s families through the simplicity of a call…and the willingness to serve at all costs. What a powerful way to live out our motto of “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” The Southeastern Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is continuing to partner with Be The Match® to recruit life-saving donors to help disrupt the disparities affecting Black/African-American searching patients. CENTENNIAL RHOYALTY | SPRING 2022
oror Sudane Ricketts wears the crown as International Ms. Jamaica 2022, and is celebrated as a woman of elegance and empowerment. Coupled with her passion for knowledge, Ricketts’ life-long platform of philanthropy is changing the world through education. “My dad knew at the age of three that I would be a teacher,” Ricketts reminisces. “While other kids were playing with dolls, I was teaching the trees.” Born in Manchester, Jamaica, Ricketts’ family relocated to the United States. They lived in Lansing, Michigan and along the east coast before moving to Palm Beach, Florida. Ricketts’ repeated change of address readied her for new beginnings. Her father, also an educator, encouraged and supported Ricketts’ capabilities, but she wanted to journey on a path of her own.

resources that students need, works with local youth in Palm Beach to clean up their community through the Adopt a Street program AND has done work with the Sweetwater Blossom Foundation headed by Soror Michele Tinglin. In addition, she is the Dean of Students in St. Lucie Public Schools in Florida. Ricketts’ inspiration to pursue and pour into youth is knowing her mission and herself. “Once you know your purpose, you know what to say yes to and what to say no to,” Ricketts confirmed. “What inspires me is my gift, my mission to work with children, and to know that’s fulfilling for me and what I’m on earth for. I’m here to make a difference in children’s lives.” Pageantry has been an interest of Ricketts’ since childhood. With a goal of leaving no stone left unturned, Ricketts researched the International Ms. organization. After interviews and competition, Ricketts was selected as International Ms. Jamaica. The competition for the International Ms. title will be held September 2022.
Even though Ricketts was in the Teachers’ Academy in high school and involved in activities that supported her zeal for education, she went to college and majored in Marketing. However, her heart was in teaching and she was moved to answer the call.
“There’s nothing like representing your homeland,” says Ricketts proudly. “This [title] means the world to me, being the little girl that dreamt of that, now finally living that.”
“I’ve always been working with kids. I always had a mission where children are my home,” says Ricketts. “After three years of teaching, the Lord laid on my heart to start traveling the world and volunteer at orphanages.”
Ricketts’ Sigma journey began in New Jersey, while becoming a Rhoer attending Union High School. She is a Spring 2010 initiate, inducted via the “Oh So Pretty” Pi Eta Chapter at Florida Atlantic University. The connection between her love for education and life as a Rhoer inspired her pursuit to

become a member of Sigma Gamma Rho. Ricketts’ membership is active with Gamma Gamma Sigma Alumnae Chapter in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her excitement for Centennial is one hundred percent.
“The first place I volunteered was at Robin’s Nest Children’s Home in Jamaica,” Ricketts explains. “It was just something about going home first.”
While her excitement for Centennial is real, so is Ricketts’ calling to sow into the lives of youth, especially today’s generation of young women. She constantly leaves words of wisdom for a new class of leaders.
Currently, Ricketts sits on the Board of Directors for Robin’s Nest, a nonprofit Christian organization focused on caring for hurting children in Jamaica. Her passion for youth does not stop there. She also mentors high school students at Scholar CC, an organization in the Palm Beach area with the tools and services needed to promote their academic and career future success. She is an active volunteer with the Rose Ann Reid Foundation, supporting their efforts in providing local schools in Jamaica with the
“I am going to be at Centennial,” Ricketts smiles. “Flight is already booked, room is booked. I’m supposed to be there!”
“Learn to love yourself and be confident in who you are,” advises Ricketts. “Authenticity is what drives people to you. We are leaders and creators of the future. Once you fully embody that, you’re powerful. We should walk in our power. This is what I want to give to the next generation of women, letting them know that once you become that person you’re supposed to be, nobody can stop you.”

Authenticity is what drives people to you. We are leaders and creators of the future.

Ricketts says serving in education and philanthropy has been a natural way of life, but she also creates a means to rejuvenate her giving spirit. In addition to the inspiration of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana, Ricketts listens to motivational speaking and is constantly encouraged by family, friends, and associates within the pageant industry. “I listen to a lot of Pastor Myles Munroe and Oprah,” says Ricketts. “I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I just finished ‘The Four Agreements’ by Don Miguel Ruiz and ‘Goddesses in Everywoman’ by Jean Bolen.” Ricketts’ musical playlist is full of Reggae but she loves all types of music. “I’m all over the place,” laughs Ricketts. “I love Reggae, I love old school R&B. I love Rap. I love a little bit of Country. I love the lyrics, the words. I like to understand what I’m listening to. It is quite clear that Soror Sudane Ricketts serves— locally and globally and she has the crown to prove it. Her selfless passion for youth coupled with her tenacious spirit to follow her dreams and aspirations are the essential attributes that have personified her into the royal woman she has always been destined to be.

Celebrating 99 Years Of SisteRHOod & Service! On November 7, 2021, Alpha Xi Sigma added to their Sigma family inducting four Rhoers. They welcomed Rhoers Kayla Nickson, Chloe Humphrey, Emiliana Nguyen and Iysabella Juarez. Founders’ Day weekend was full of excitement for Alpha Xi Sigma. On November 12, 2021, they toured the newly built Greenwood Rising Museum where the Black Wallstreet exhibit was on display. The exhibit provided information on the history and development of Black Wallstreet. The exhibit took them through an era when Black Wallstreet was a thriving district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but in 1921 it was decimated during the Tulsa race massacre where white mobs attacked residents, homes and businesses in the Greenwood district. This era correlated with Sigma Gamma Rho’s history because seven founders were breaking barriers when blacks were not allowed to attend PWI institutions. By the Founders’ being the only African American sorority founded on a predominantly white campus at Butler University, it reminded chapter members of how far they have come throughout the history of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. The Alpha Xi Sigma Sorors and Philos partnered with the Tulsa Dream Centers Super Saturday’s event to complete their International Day of Service on November 13th. Members and affiliates sorted groceries and clothes for the clothing closet. The goods were provided to people within the community who were in need. Sorors, Philos, and Rhoers ended the Founders Day celebration on November 14th as they worshipped at Covenant Family Church. On November 28, 2021, Alpha Xi Sigma was proud to announce the introduction of 4 Rhoyal Highnesses to their beloved chapter. They welcomed Sorors Chephon Morrison, April Sallis, Sherrie Wallace and Courtney Walker. RHOvember was definitely eventful with lots of excitement and growth.

Mad City Money Mu Tau Sigma Alumnae Chapter members had the pleasure of partnering with the local chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and A+ Federal Credit Union to bring the “Mad City Money” creative roleplay simulation activity to young people in their community. The goal was to help teens develop financial skills by getting a taste of the real world as they took on the role of an adult – complete with occupation, salary, family, student loan and credit card debts, and medical insurance payments. The challenge was for the teens to select housing, transportation, food, household necessities, clothing, daycare, and other wants and needs, while creating and following a realistic budget. Teens also had to make debt payments and decide how much to save. At the start of the event, teens received a packet with information about the role they were playing, a budget worksheet and a budget summary page. Teens completed their budget worksheet as they visited all the merchants. They revised their budget and purchases as needed by revisiting those merchants. Their goal was to try to have no more than $100 undesignated at the end of a month, taking into account their income, purchases, debts, and savings. A debriefing was given at the close of the event to highlight what they learned and experienced, and volunteers were encouraged to discuss the simulation experience with the teens who participated.

DELTA SIGMA CHAPTER “Welcome Home, Sorors: Reactivation Celebration With Stringing Of The Pearls” A dream fulfilled. This ceremony has been four years in the making. What began as Soror Jeanine Donaldson’s vision was realized Sunday, October 17, 2021, when over 100 members of the Delta Sigma Chapter gathered for their first in-person event in over a year to welcome Sorors back into Sigma life. “We needed something special to make reactivated Sorors feel special,” says Cultured Pearl Vivian Carwell, ceremony creator. “We hoped they felt special and welcomed back into the Sisterhood regardless of the circumstances of why they left.” This sentiment was echoed by Soror Donaldson, Reclamation Chair. “We wanted to celebrate the Sorors who were courageous enough to reactivate. This was a Centennial kickoff, and it gave us a space to connect, break bread, and fellowship.” Highlighting Delta Sigma’s history, the ceremony focused on fun facts and trivia about pioneering Sorors who call the chapter home. The event was adorned in pearls, royal blue, and gold. Soror Johnson sang a beautiful rendition of Jill Scott’s “Golden” and there was a recitation of Bible scriptures by Cultured Pearl Carwell. The event culminated with the individual recognition of each reactivated Soror–13 in all. Many smiles were seen, and countless memories created, bringing the moment full circle for both Sorors Donaldson and Carwell, who shared their ultimate goal of making Stringing of the Pearls a national ceremony. “I would love to see that come to be,” Carwell says. “I did the same thing with the Ruby Ceremony, and I would love to add this program, too.”

Julia Davis continues to be esteemed for her commitment to education, work as a community activist, historian, and the endowment she left to the library. Celebrating 75 Years Serving Our Children Through Operation Bigbookbag The Pandemic has not hindered the Beta Epsilon Sigma Chapter from making a difference to help “somebody.” Not being able to provide the normal Operation BigBookBag project at the beginning of the academic year, the Chapter moved forward choosing to sponsor Alcorn Middle School at the beginning of second semester. After contacting the Principal, Dr. Cedric Wright, a meeting was held with the school administration, Basileus McIver, and Dr. Goodwine, chair. The chapter’s goal of supplying a class of 30 with school supplies including jump drives, paper, pencils, composition books, masks, and hand sanitizer was enthusiastically welcomed. During the meeting, Dr. Wright made chapter representatives aware of the socio-economic needs of students: (1) food packages as many students went without food during the weekend, (2) the need of toiletry items, and (3) the athletic department need of girls’ and boys’ basketball uniforms. Once this was relayed to chapter members, the operation was expanded to include snack packets and toiletry bags. Cultured Pearl January and Ms. Charlotte Royster provided monetary contributions to assist with feeding the children and purchasing new uniforms. On Friday, January 7, 2022, Basileus McIver presented Dr. Wright with school supplies, snack packets, and toiletry packets for a class of 30 students. Beta Epsilon Sigma continues to move forward while trying to provide services to the community just like their legacies, step-by-step. Celebrating 75 Years With A Clean Sweep While Partnering!!!!! ESTATE PLANNING | SPRING 2022
It’s Never TO TooSTART EarlyYOUR ESTATE PLAN*
By Soror Bomopregha A. Julius
If you are active on social media or any family group chat, you have probably received a request to support a GoFundMe for an unexpected death or illness. You have given money to the effort or ignored it because the request has become too frequent. This practice is all too common in our community, reflecting a stark statistic. According to the 2021 Wills and Estate Planning Study, by Caring.com, only about 29.5% of Black people currently have a Last Will and Testament or will, contrasted with 33% of people in the United States. Black people comparatively lag behind other racial groups. Culturally, there can be many explanations. The topic of pending death, even when inevitable, may be an uncomfortable one. So, What Is An Estate Plan? An estate plan is a plan of action for your loved ones in the event of your death or incapacity. An estate plan can change and should change because of several factors. Some of which include marriage, children, assets, and age.
72 | THE AURORA
Why Do You Need One, Or Why Would You Need One? Wills and estate plans have become synonymous, but they are not the same. Many believe that an estate plan only covers death and wrongly leaves themselves uncovered for incapacity. At age 22, you can have a serious car accident and survive but become incapacitated. Generally, an excellent question to ask yourself right now is if I wasn’t able to care for myself, who and how will/would my everyday needs be met personally and financially? Or if I die today, whom would I trust to carry out my final requests, and what would those requests be? Estate plans work for anyone at any age, even when you are single and renting. How To Get Started? First, you may want to complete a personal information inventory and a personal asset and liability inventory questionnaire. These questionnaires help you or a professional have a complete picture of your estate. Second, you may want to make an appointment with a lawyer and a financial advisor to see their recommendations based on your questionnaires. Thirdly, you may want to make sure you name beneficiaries on the accounts you control and update their information. Lastly, there are some additional documents outside of a will that you may want to have drafted and kept. These documents include: Durable Power Of Attorney: This document lays out who can make financial decisions if you are incapacitated. Health-Care Power Of Attorney: This designates someone to handle your medical decisions if you become sick and cannot make them for yourself. Many hospitals have a form document you can request or even your local health department. Living Will: Also called an advanced directive, a living will is a document that expresses your wishes for medical treatments you would or would not want to use to keep you alive. This may not be recognized in every state but can help your designated agent make decisions. Remember, estate plans should continuously be updated and changed as life events happen. You may start with just a few documents and work towards a will. Simple estate plans are not expensive to create. Create a plan and inform your friends and family. This process can be unbearable, but ultimately a plan will help alleviate stress in difficult times.
