This is a project about the public. Located in mid-town Phoenix, the project sits on lots once occupied by private residences that were razed years ago for high-rise development that has yet to come. This project gives back to the community it belongs to. As much as it provides an efficient and functional fire station for the Phoenix Fire Department, it creates a new place for the community to call home.

After a comprehensive program analysis of fire stations, these diagrams were the genesis of this project.

Finish Face Steel mesh shading fins are supported by brackets which are supported by mullions of the outer curtain wall which wraps encases the truss. A second curtain wall inside the plane of the truss encases it, creating a double envelope system. Curtain walls are supported by the truss. Where glass doesn’t occur on first level, insulated structural precast concrete panels take their place. These also comprise the building’s two towers.

Walls Removed Removal of precast panels and curtain walls reveals the extent of the structural reach of the truss. The main structure is comprised of three “supporting” trusses and two outer trusses that span between them (forming the two squares in the plan). These are aided by intermediate trusses. Cellular beams (with regular web perforations) allow air to be returned through the plenum without need for ductwork. A raised-floor system is responsible for air supply.

Stripped to the Bone Removing all but the structural members reveals the true nature of the structural hierarchy. The raised floor rests on a series of precast hollow-core concrete planks. These in turn rest on the cellular beams, which span the distance between intermediate trusses. The resultant long spans means future programmatic changes could easily move interior partitions. The cellular beams are additionally braced by smaller cellular members that allow the plenum to remain porous for easy air return.

Sections East-West

East-West sections reveal the function of the two towers - natural ventilation via opposite methods. The west tower is an evaporative cooling tower, using damp mesh screens to cool air. This is used to naturally cool the courtyard and elevator lobbies. The east tower is a solar chimney, with windows to allow ample heat gain. The resultant hot air rises, subsequently creating negative pressure that evacuates the apparatus bay. The shaft is also equipped with fans that can be used when the solar-driven air cycle is inadequate.
