ARTIST RESEARCH—WILLIAM MORRIS (ART NOUVEAU)

Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
'WILLOW BOUGH BLUE'
Here I have looked at William Morris and focused on his recurring them of nature. To transcribe his work into a font I used : curves, swirls and leaves. This experiment using the floral approach makes the letters very decorative and are aesthetically complex.

ARTIST RESEARCH— Kalvyn Ffrench-James Kalvyn believes in design with a purpose. Conceptually strong ideas that communicate clearly and can be applied to any medium. 'Basic Shapes' was inspired by the use of geometric shapes. As part of a pitch for Kingston University Degree Show, I was experimenting with the idea of illusion, depth of field and perspective. By overlapping the shapes I was able to create this interesting typeface.

Looking at this typeface led me to experimenting with pieces of neon bright square paper to create letters all being straight angled.

ARTIST RESEARCH— José Ernesto Rodríguez ‘Handschrift’ is a simple font. Created by José Ernesto Rodríguez just with a photocopier and his hands. Handschrift is german for hand-writing. SOURCE: ’Everything Creative’
To sample this artists work I have experimented using charcoal sticks: applying different strokes and tones.
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
I have then transcribed a few letters in a similar style.

ARTIST RESEARCH—Armin Hofmann
Looking at one of Hofmann’s works I straight away experimented with rough textures on a variety of surfaces. Such as rough brush scraped into letterforms after experimenting in a haphazard method.

ARTIST RESEARCH—JASPER JOHNS
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
Here I have sampled the artists work by applying acrylic paints using a palette knife. I did this to achieve the rough and smudged aesthetic and texture that appears in Johns work. The colour palette mainly focuses on the primary colours of: blue, red and yellow with white highlights as these are the colours that reflect our learning of the alphabets and numbers such as in our primary education it is the first thing we are taught.

ARTIST RESEARCH—PAUL RENNER (GEOMETRIC SHAPES)
This piece of Renner's immediately led me to focus on the basic shapes and the colours.
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
Below I have transcribed the shapes into letterforms being in both upper and lower case.

ARTIST RESEARCH—HERBERT BAYER
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
Here I have picked a piece of Bayers work to sample the shape and colours. I have experimented using watercolours, bright promarkers and crayons looking at tone and texture. However I don’t think it turned out very successful to continue it further.

ARTIST RESEARCH—KANDINSKY
To sample this artists work I have experimented using watercolours and bright promarkers applying different strokes and tones. I have then transcribed a few letters in a style focusing on colour and line. However this may be perceived as pop art rather than Kandinsky's style due to the bright bold colours, pattern fill and black outline. I also experimented using simple lines, shapes and colour with coloured biro pens on lined paper. This resulted in being too dull.

ARTIST RESEARCH—ROY LICHTENSTEIN
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
Lichtenstein’s work intrigues me as I admire the handwritten text on each of his pieces. I also like the comic style use of speech bubbles. To sample Lichtenstein's work I have analysed his works in order to produce my own developments of variations of his style of work put into a typeface.

Here I have sampled some variations by analysing Lichtenstein’s works. For example I have looked at: bold colours, dot variations and outlines But I think the two fill designs which work towards Lichtenstein’s style of work are the polka dots and cross hatching.

ARTIST RESEARCH—JEAN DUBUFFET
To sample Dubuffet’s work I have shown the development process of how I have identified certain characters within Dubuffet’s work by analysing the line, colour shape and form using: pencil shading, black fine liner and coloured fine liners. The colours I chose to use reflect the colours used in Dubuffet’s work which are Blue, Red, Black and White.

ARTIST RESEARCH—PABLO PICASSO
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
To sample Picasso’s work I first looked at one of his works and identified a few letters which I found within his painting. I then experimented by sampling a selection of flesh/skin tones using: promarkers, acrylic paint, charcoal, sanguine oil pencil, sepia light pencil and pastels.

NEW & IMPROVED
Project: ARTIST TYPEFACE
I have re-designed my Roy Lichtenstein inspired typeface as I feel like the first outcome was not successful. With the new design I have focused on certain shapes which I picked out from Lichtenstein's painting of ‘WHAAM’. The recurring shapes in my typeface are circles, dots and exclamation marks.
