From the Editor... Sometimes dreams really do come true. . . I know this because starting this magazine was a long held dream of mine. I wanted to put everything I love in one place… all the shabby, French and vintage inspired gorgeousness; beautiful homes, inspiring creative spaces, amazing people, lovely blogs and special events. My hope is that you too will love all these beautiful things and look forward to each new quarterly issue of Simply Shabbilicious. Last Spring I painted my kitchen cabinets with Annie Sloan chalk paint. It was a bit of a risk painting new cabinets, but I knew what I wanted and when I decorate I am a bit of a risk taker. Nothing really scares me. . . I love taking chances. After painting my cabinets it brought so much light into my home. So many people think that white is such a cold color, but I feel if you pick the right white it adds lots of warmth and charm to your home. I love using different tones of white to give interest and contrast to a room. The hardware I used on my cabinets was bought at a thrift store. They were shiny brass and I painted them to look like variegated copper. I didn’t know how to get that result, so I just messed around with paint until I got the color I wanted. My advice is not to be afraid to try something. Just go for it!

Getting to know Gail McCormack Tell us a little about yourself. I’m a mother of 2 and Grandmother to One. I’m married to my best friend and business partner Tony. We live on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Victoria Australia where I paint in my little studio in our Old Cottage. We also have a bricks and mortar shop “Second Hand Heaven” which my husband runs, I also sell my artwork from here.
How long have you been painting? I’ve been drawing and painting since as long as I can remember, but painting full time for a living for approx. 16 years.

Getting to know… Gail McCormack What inspired you to start painting? I started seriously painting to sell my artwork when I finished my regular 5 day a week job, prior to that I’d dabbled and sold at the odd market, artwork on consignment in shops etc. etc. I remember Tony made an Easel to sell at one of our markets and I decided to do a quickly half finished painting to make a quirky display on the easel, what do you know my half finished painting sold, which I guess gave me a little confidence and inspiration to take things a little further. What is the main inspiration for your designs? I have quite a collection of China Painting magazines, these are wonderful inspiration! I’m besotted by Vintage Rose & Floral Artists, Catherine Klien, Paul De Longpre, to name a few. Are you working on anything special at the moment? I’m working on gallery stretched canvas original paintings at the moment, all different sizes and subjects, but all in the pretty soft, shabby chic theme. I love the way these can be grouped on a wall, or propped in amongst pretty china and treasures. They are easily framed too. How many projects do you usually have going at once? I tend to have only one painting going at the one time, I’m quite limited for room in my little studio, which probably is a good thing, as I think if I had too many on the go, I’d maybe not finish certain ones.

What does "shabby chic" mean to you, and why do you find this design style appealing? To me “Shabby Chic” means, the contrast of Chippy, blemished, rustic WITH Pretty, glamorous, stylish, I’ve always loved this style even before the term “Shabby Chic” was known. You do some up-cycling, what's the most unusual item you've recycled and what did you transform it into? My most recent favourite up-cycled item was an old chippy door Tony rescued and prepared for me. I painted my roses on the front, the original rustic latch was left on….The new owner was very happy. (shown at left) How has your art affected the rest of your life? My art is my passion; I feel my life revolves around my art, especially as a large part of my time is taken up with sourcing interesting and unique pieces to paint….always on the lookout wherever we go! It’s just wonderful Tony and I can work together sourcing our treasures. I can’t imagine a different life to the one we’re leading now! It’s taken a long time to get here but well worth the Journey! A quick and easy ‘shabbilicious’ Easter gift. . . made from a recycled egg carton.
1. I gave this one a quick coat of white Gesso to seal the cardboard egg carton. 2. Next I gathered some pretty supplies. . . I used a free vintage Easter download image for both the top and inside of egg carton lid. There are many free vintage images available online. Checkout The Graphics Fairy 3. A coat of paint in antique white (top) and pale pink (bottom) was used before adding a pretty polka dot paper to the top of the lid. 4. Next came the beautiful embellishments. . . some lace, paper doilies, crinkly pink ribbon, paper flowers, buttons and bling. 57
And so it became a pretty gift box ready to be filled with Easter goodness!
