A Note of Appreciation

On behalf of Shady Side Academy, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the nearly 1,400 donors who helped us achieve another record-breaking year in philanthropic giving. Not only did we surpass our ambitious Blue & Gold Fund goal by raising nearly $2.3 million to support the school’s most pressing needs, but we also received more than $1.5 million through the Pennsylvania tax-credit programs. At the heart of SSA’s success is a dedicated community that honors our past, celebrates the present and envisions a bright future.

I am pleased to share with you our 2021-2022 Report of Philanthropy, which includes stories that represent the many SSA community members who, when called to action, volunteered their time and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the school’s mission, including financial support, which will leave an everlasting impact on our students and faculty. As a result of this generous spirit, Shady Side continues to offer its students not only an exceptional education, but an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and diverse perspectives.

While 2021-2022 proved to be another challenging year, I have no doubt that this coming year will be just as exciting and the school’s growth will be even greater! I hope you will consider attending a community event, connecting through our social media sites or visiting one our beautiful campuses. I look forward to connecting with you soon!

Supporting the Workforce of Tomorrow

The Benedum name is synonymous with so many great philanthropic efforts across Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania—and Shady Side Academy is the recipient of much of that tremendous benevolence.

Paul G. Benedum, Jr. ’50 has been actively involved in helping to create the future of Shady Side Academy since his days playing soccer and tennis on campus. Benny, as he is affectionately known, went to work with the family business of managing investments in oil and gas exploration, where he later became the president.

His early career success and family legacy set Mr. Benedum on a path of generosity at a young age. “People need to understand that Shady Side Academy is more than just a leading prep school, it’s an important part of the Pittsburgh business community,” he said. “The investments we make in the school today have a direct impact on the level of graduates we have entering the workforce tomorrow. We have an incredible reputation to uphold.”

Mr. Benedum’s long-standing service to the boards of both Shady Side Academy and his alma mater Brown University are evidence of his commitment to shaping tomorrow’s leaders. Monetarily, Mr. Benedum continues to make extraordinary impact through generous support of the SSA boarding program with more than $350,000 donated through the Paul G. Benedum, Jr. Foundation, a commitment of more than $2.7 million over his lifetime through concentrated initiatives including the Benedum Visual Arts Center on the Senior School campus, the

Benedum Student Center in Rowe Hall, and the creation of an endowment for faculty compensation and benefits in the name of Walter Jones, one of his beloved teachers and coaches. Most recently, the entrance to the Middle School campus was named Benedum Lane, giving the school the new address of 100 Benedum Lane. Mr. Benedum has also graciously opened his home in Naples, Florida to host SSA alumni events.

Mr. Benedum is especially proud of the work that he’s done growing the Paul G. Benedum Teaching Fellowships. This fund provides the necessary means for faculty to strengthen their professional development through graduate studies, sabbaticals, teaching fellowships, and travel - all sparking intellectual vitality in teaching at Shady Side Academy. Last year alone, the Benedum Fellowship awarded over $250,000 in professional development funds.

“People need to understand that Shady Side Academy is more than just a leading prep school, it’s an important part of the Pittsburgh business community.”

“I have such great memories of Shady Side Academy,” says Mr. Benedum. “I encourage others to remember the great opportunities the school has provided and do what you can to provide those same opportunities to the students and faculty that help to make Shady Side Academy the exemplary institution it continues to be.”

SPOTLIGHT

Jennifer Riscili & Karen DiFiore Drive the Spirit of Blue & Gold Fund

A large part of the success of Shady Side Academy’s annual giving can consistently be seen through the dedication and support of the faculty and staff. While the Blue & Gold Fund enjoys strong support from faculty and staff at all four campuses, the Junior School has the longest run of 100% participation. Leading the charge of this important program for more than 13 years is the dynamic duo of teachers Jennifer Riscili and Karen DiFiore.

Riscili, who joined the Junior School faculty in 2003 and currently teaches third grade, began her work with the Blue & Gold Fund near the beginning of her tenure with Shady Side Academy. DiFiore, who has been a physical education teacher at the Junior School since 2008, has partnered with Riscili in the faculty giving efforts.

“We work with all of our school heads to bring a sense of fun to the Blue & Gold Fund,” says DiFiore. “To encourage participation of all faculty and staff early in the school year, we like to offer incentives to encourage each school to reach 100% participation.”

“It’s never about the amount of the monetary donation. It’s more about participation,” says Riscili. “In fact, we never even know what the contributions are. For us, it says a lot for the school to be able to go out into the community and say ‘our faculty and staff believe in supporting the school.’”

Shady Side Academy’s Blue & Gold Fund, also known as the annual fund, supports the highest needs of the Academy by providing necessary and critical resources for the annual operating budget. Beyond the support

of Shady Side’s outstanding faculty, the Blue & Gold Fund looks to alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of SSA. In 2021-2022, the Blue & Gold Fund goal was $2.2 million—the money raised impacts faculty enrichment, innovative academic programs, and a range of student opportunities in athletics and the arts.

“As a teacher coming from the public school sector into the private school sector, one of the biggest differences I experienced was the support of the school, the administration and the importance of professional development,” says DiFiore. “We are encouraged to find conferences and learning opportunities that allow us to become better teachers. The Blue & Gold Fund makes those opportunities happen. I feel like since I have started at Shady Side, I am such a better teacher because of this enrichment.”

“Shady Side Academy is a family, a community of excellence, and we work hard to maintain the relationships with students and families for many years after they leave the school,” says Riscili.

“I have a rocking chair in my classroom that every student signs on the last day of school. With that signature, I always remind them that they have a special place in my heart and with Shady Side Academy. That pride and our guiding principles is what motivates us to continue our work with the Blue & Gold Fund.”

Taking the Arts to New Heights

Dek Ingraham arrived at Shady Side Academy in summer 2021 as the new Executive Director of the Hillman Center for Performing Arts and Senior School Performing Arts Chair. In these roles, Ingraham already has taken great steps to expand the Senior School’s performing arts program and will work toward shifting the Hillman Performing Arts Series to be much more studentoriented and community-focused.

We sat down with him to see how his first year at Shady Side Academy has been and what lies ahead for the arts program.

“Dek”—what a great name! There HAS to be a story behind that.

It’s actually from my middle name Dexter, and my great grandfather used that nickname, so my parents gave it to me as well. I’m actually Richard Dexter Ingraham III, which is ridiculous and scary. So I’m a Dek.

Tell us about the new spin you’re putting on the Hillman Series.

I’m programming the series to connect with the community in

truly meaningful ways. Not only are we bringing in great artists, we’re connecting them directly with students through workshops and performances during the day. We will welcome the entire community to take part, as well as a focus on bringing students in the Pittsburgh community to the Hillman facility.

This all happens, of course, through the support of generous donors and the Henry L. Hillman Foundation.

The Henry L. Hillman Foundation is just incredible. The building and the program wouldn’t exist without their continued support. I met Henry once, and it was a great experience. He was such an incredible supporter of the arts. It’s really great to be able to honor that and bring his wishes to our stage year after year.

What do you want our donors to know about the arts program at Shady Side Academy?

You make art great by building a community and making sure that it’s open for everybody to participate. Having a way to have difficult discourse and still come out of it as a stronger community through conversations really matters. We’re creating a place where people belong, where they can explore, and where failure isn’t a bad thing. I teach my students that we need to embrace those failures, because that is what teaches us to be better artists and better people—learning to fail gracefully.

CLASS OF 1966 MAKING IT

HAPPEN

The Memorial Hall Library project is a $2.2 million conversion of Memorial Hall from its origins as a chapel and theater space to a contemporary library that serves as a hub for academic research, collaborative learning and small community events.

Dr. Bartley Griffith ’66 generously contributed the lead gift to kick off the project and challenged his classmates to raise additional funds to secure the naming opportunity for the new space in honor of their class.

Thanks to this incredible support, the space will be known as the Class of 1966 Memorial Hall Library.

Keeping it in the Family with an EITC Gift

Tracy and Chuck Warden are proud Shady Side parents and grandparents. Their son Wes graduated from Shady Side Academy in 2022 and started at Cornell University this fall as part of their golf team. Their granddaughter Avery started kindergarten at Shady Side’s Junior School this year.

Their devotion to Shady Side started early during Wes’s time with the school, as they became supporters of the Blue & Gold Fund. Tracy, operating as the executive director of multi-location Tri-State Orthopaedics and Chuck, founder and chairman of Newedge Capital Group then put their business expertise to work 10 years ago to set up a Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) gift to Shady Side Academy.

“We were very happy with Wes’s experience at Shady Side, and I just think it’s a responsibility to make sure that those experiences are funded and carried forward for others,” says Chuck.

“Charitable giving through a company is fundamental. The EITC program makes giving more efficient, because if you give a dollar, the state kicks in 90 percent of it, and then the other 10 percent is tax deductible. It just makes good business sense” says Chuck.

“We reapply every two years. It’s an easy process,” says Tracy. “There are benefits to the two-year commitment—it takes you from 75 percent to 90 percent support from the state.”

Since 2001, Pennsylvania’s EITC program has allowed businesses and individuals to lower their tax bills by donating to private schools, scholarship organizations, pre-K programs, and other educational enrichment initiatives.

The bulk of the tax credits—$110 million per year—are reserved for donors that give to scholarship organizations, which provide financial aid to children attending K-12 private schools.

Businesses can donate up to $750,000 each year to EITC-eligible organizations, and then claim 75-90 percent of that donation as a credit that offsets their state tax bill.

“We look at it and say, ‘why WOULDN’T businesses take advantage of this benefit,” says Tracy. “It’s a win-win for everyone!”

Olajumoke “Jumoke” Adebimpe ’96 could hug a room with her beautiful voice and kind spirit. She was an active member of Shady Side Academy’s plays and musicals— and created friendships in school that would endure both time and distance.

Jumoke passed away suddenly on March 19, 2021, leaving her friends and family shocked, but holding onto the beauty she created everywhere she went.

“Jumoke and I instantly gravitated toward each other at Shady Side,” says Hindatu Mohammed ’95. “We were both Nigerian and had this mutual understanding of life, being the children of immigrant parents.”

Saloni Sharma ’96 also became friends with both Jumoke and Hindatu while at Shady Side. “I have so many good memories from our time there—most of which revolved around Jumoke and her beautiful spirit,” says Sharma.

In honoring the great presence Jumoke created while with us, Hindatu and Saloni began to reach out to Shady

Side Academy classmates, family and friends to establish a legacy in Jumoke’s name. They decided on a bench placed at the doors of the Hillman Center for Performing Arts to honor her beautiful voice and as a place where all could physically come to be with her.

“When I think of Jumoke, I think of her voice. She had a beautiful, trained operatic voice, a bold voice in service and social justice, and a constant voice of kindness,” says Saloni.

“When we started to solicit donations for this, we experienced this outpouring of emotion and stories from all who knew her,” says Hindatu. “It reinforces why this is something that’s important to do because she had such a positive impact on so many lives,” says Hindatu.

To make a gift in memory of a loved one, please contact the Development Office at development@shadysideacademy.org

As a strong advocate for social justice, she was an active member of the ACLU and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Also a devout Christian who exemplified the teachings of her faith, Jumoke was exceedingly kind and welcoming to every person she met. She believed absolutely everyone, without exception, was deserving of understanding, compassion and love. This is evidenced by the volunteer work she did singing for children in hospice and the host of friends she leaves behind.

GIVING

Honoring Faculty with a Semper Society Bequest

Hilary E. Harley ’82 grew up on Hickory Hill Road in Fox Chapel, just steps from Shady Side Academy’s Senior School. The youngest of three sisters, her journey to Shady Side started when her middle sister, Heather, enrolled in 1973 as the school opened its doors to female students for the first time. After witnessing her sister’s love for the school, Hilary enrolled in 1978.

Hilary describes herself as not being a particularly athletic child but she soaked up the arts. Having taken an art class with faculty member Philip Joyce, she proceeded to take art courses all four years of high school. She says, “The art studios were a reprieve from the heavy focus on academics. It felt like therapy in a way.” It wasn’t only the art studio that spoke to Hilary and left an impression. Hilary is now an accomplished writer living in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, who fondly remembers the faculty who introduced her to literature and instilled a passion for storytelling in her heart. “I wouldn’t be the writer I am today without the teachers that I had at Shady Side.”

Hilary speaks to not only the breadth and depth of the English curriculum, but she fondly remembers summer reading assignments and lively classroom discussions facilitated by teachers such as Bill Tadler as having an instrumental impact on her as a writer and human. “I still remember my sophomore year. I read Native Son by Richard Wright. When people ask which book has been most important to me, it’s that book. I was only 15 when I read it.”

Hilary hails from a family with a rich history of philanthropic support to educational institutions. “My father probably set up too many scholarships—if that’s possible.” She credits her parents’ incredible generosity with instilling in her a passion for giving back. “I just want to continue that legacy of educational giving, and I want to be able to support the wonderful teachers at Shady Side Academy.”

In addition to beloved faculty members such as Philip Joyce, Bill Tadler, and Joe Felder, Hilary recalls the critical thinking skills she and fellow students were asked to develop, and the realization that she had a voice in important conversations, as worthy of her support. “It was a no-brainer for me. How can I not give back when I see how richly my experience at Shady Side shaped my life? I want to pass that on.”

Hilary Harley is a member of our esteemed Semper Society, donors who have made a commitment to leave Shady Side Academy in their will or other estate plans.

WHY I GIVE

Nurturing the Next Generation

Remington Jackson ’08 considers Shady Side Academy a life-changer. Under challenged in his academics through middle school, Jackson had the opportunity to come to Shady Side Academy in 9th grade thanks to a scholarship from FAME (Funds for Advancement of Minorities through Education) and generous support from SSA alumnus John Kramer ’57.

“You meet certain people in life and they’re so good that you just can’t believe they’re real,” says Jackson. “Mr. Kramer is the real deal. He’s genuine— and he taught me the importance of matching words with actions.”

Kramer’s mentorship of Jackson continued well past Shady Side Academy, through Jackson’s law school journey, and is a constant to this day.

“An important part of my story is that I didn’t pass the bar exam the first time after I graduated from law school,” says Jackson. “Mr. Kramer continued to encourage me and I finally passed my third time around. He helped me to understand that failure is as important as success. It helps us grow.”

Part of Jackson’s growth journey with Mr. Kramer came in the form of giving back. Kramer encouraged Jackson to become part of Shady Side Academy’s Board of Visitors, a distinguished group of alums from across the country that serve in an advisory capacity to the Academy’s leadership. Kramer founded the Board of Visitors in 2002 with Ed Grefenstette ’85 as a way to provide the Academy with valuable perspective, feedback, suggestions, and insight.

“John Kramer helped me to understand how important that is. A society grows great when older generations plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit. Great SSA stewards like John Kramer gave generously, which helped create scholarships for up and coming students like myself to achieve our dreams. Now is my turn to give and carry that flag forward to do the same for the next generations.”

“Serving on the Board of Visitors is a great way for me to give back and help guide the future of Shady Side Academy,” says Jackson.
