SHAFIK HUFFMAN iBOOTH PHONECASE ADV. PROTOTYPING

PROJECT OBJECTIVE Design a product surrounding your smart device or tablet that solves a specific problem. This will be done using advanced prototyping techniques. The process will accomplish a desired aesthetic and solution.

INSPIRATION

AESTHETICS Several magazines, books, and comics interested me to establish a design style that fit my personality. Black and white photography inspired me to take a simple and minimalist approach to design aesthetics.

SCAVENGER HUNT During this stage of the process, several items where collected to inspire and influence the final design. These products encourage specific materials, a developed style, and an established design philosophy.

BRAINSTORMING The transition into brainstorming was a key element during the ideation process. The goal of this assignment was to quickly think of as many different products that solve problems using a smart device.

CONCEPT DIRECTION Arriving at a final design decision was a challenge. These drawings lead me to begin building my final model and to create a polaroid camera. Brainstorming to concept ideation resulted in the desired product outcome.

POLAROID DISASSEMBLY After successfully taking apart the Polaroid camera, there were several levels of precision. The majority of the mechanisms were built into the product itself. This made it difficult to take apart without getting electrocuted.

TITLE HERE Design a product surrounding your smart device or tablet that solves a specific problem. This will be done using advanced prototyping techniques on a milling and CNC machine. The process will require several steps in order to accomplish a desired aesthetic.

FINAL RENDERINGS To achieve maximum precision my final direction is a photobooth phonecase. This will use machines and advanced prototyping techniques aquired throughout the process. Captions reveal desired functions and styles.

EARLY MODELS The journey throughout this part of the process lead me to consider the functionality of how it works. Analyzing it in full scale allowed the mechanisms to be placed inside. This stage to the design process lead to a final mock-up stage.

IDEO CRITIQUE Industrial Design Engineering Organization is a RedDot Award Winning company that specializes in high precision product manufacturing. Working professionals suggested to focus more on the way I think rather then taking too much advice from others.

HOW IT WORKS A living hinge is on the inside wall of the device. Specified angles determined the pivot point for the mechanism. This is one way of keeping the phone in place to expose the camera lens, flash, and view finder.

FINAL MOCKUPS Recognizing the patterns and sequence of the final product design made it easier to understand and anticipate the actual size and measurments. These would lead to the final manufactoring process used.

TOOLING & PRECISION Former Frog designer Robert Zuchowski introduced us to tooling and high precision milling. These skills are used in industry to achieve a high level of detail. CNC machining was also used during the design process.

ACCURACY These are the contraints used to produce the final polaroid photobooth. Working between tolerances required a detailed orthographic from a CAD drawing.

FINAL MODEL The final design is a photobooth phonecase that is small enough to fit in your pocket. This was achieved using advanced manufacturing processes / techniques.
