The idea of the thesis project is to design the first purpose-built shelter or retreat center for the female victims of domestic violence in Oman to protect and help them escape abuse in all its forms. This socially-minded project aims to bring awareness on the disregarded societal issue as well as create a safe space for the victims to heal. The seventy-bed full service retreat center offers safety, transitional housing, counseling, legal services, and community support for the female individuals whose lives are at risk. Burkana Haven is named after the Arabic word burkan which translates to volcano. This is a personification of the internal pent up emotions of grief, pain, and hurt of a domestic violence survivor that suddenly erupts over a long period of time. Studies from UN show that one of the dominant causes for violence against women is the financial issues found in low income regions. Thus, the chosen location for Burkana Haven is Alkhoudh, Muscat; due to its housing of low income families. The center is within reach of local community resources such as health clinics, convenience stores, jobs, recreational facilities, training and educational instituitions, housing, and legal services. The form of the building is influenced by the need to take advantage of the prevailing winds, hence the sharp angles, as well as avoiding a prison-like structure so incorporating courtyards in between the functional spaces. All in all, the design concept is to design an open town within a walled city. When violence against women is eradicated in the country, only then can the building be transformed to an entirely different function.

This two floor and a penthouse contemporary villa, designed for a family, features 6 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 storages and a balcony. Each bedroom includes an en suite and a dressing area. The dining and kitchen spaces are in close proximity to the living room to ensure quick mobility between attending to guests and preparing a meal. The service door in the kitchen is near the car port to shorten the distance when unloading groceries from the car. The sun blockers are integrated as part of the design near the windows, while large corner windows are designed in the living room for better natural lighting. The balcony on the upper floor is great for the magnificent mountainscape found behind the residential building.

The concept is to design a space that would help shed light on the importance of one of the world’s leading architects, Mimar Sinan, by incorporating similar feautures of his own architectural buildings onto the visitor center. The architect’s famous buildings are known for their symmetricity, visibility, indoor gardens, and ability to provide significant viewpoints to which the visitor center in Üsküdar, Turkey reflects. The rooftop features 3 stationary tower viewers aligned with Mimar Sinan buildings on the site. It is situated along the seaside for more visibility and better accessibility as it is a stand alone structure not engulfed or swallowed by other surrounding buildings.

The new school is designed to allow more ventilation to pass through and circulate into the inner parts of the building without causing any blockage to the dominating northwest wind pathways. Some tactics to make this possible include incorporating the podium and setback design, which can be found near the entrance, to help improve the urban ventilation not only in the school itself, but the surrounding area of the neighborhood as well. All features of this private male school like the grand courtyard with an elevated shading area, the rooftop football pitch, the open sitting area in the library overlooking the street, a small garden by the well, the 7 meter high basketball court with elevated seating will help to create a new lively, vibrant and active neighborhood.

This community based mosque is a proposal to an existing one in Almawaleh called AlSadiq Alameen Mosque. It focuses on creating comfortable and heavenly spaces for both men and women because everyone deserves good design. It is situated between a commercial and a residential area. The main concept is to have more functional spaces, aside from the prayer halls, to give the worshippers a reason to stay after prayer times. It features a library, a males majlis, a multi-functional classroom, a central courtyard, and a little open area by the water for anyone to use.
