STUDIO PROJECTS

markaz centre of islamic studies and mappila cultural centre calicut, kerala.

This project aims at creating an islamic studies institute and cultural centre for Mappila Muslims ( Native muslims of the state of Kerala ) .It is a graduate and post graduate , residential college for students to learn about islamic culture, jurisprudence and philosophy. It is also aplace where people from different faiths or no faith can come together and interact with each other, to change the orientalist and islamophobic narratives about Islam. This place also helps to learn and know about art and culture of muslims, specifically the mappila muslims of Kerala which can be celebrated and shared

ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE OF KERALA

The mosques of Kerala differ greatly from

Muslim structures of any other region of India. The extensive use of timber in the construction of the upper storeys and the tiered form of their roofs represent a type of Indo-Islamic architecture, peculiar to the region.

MAPPILA MUSLIMS OF KERALA

The Mappila community originated primarily as a result of the pre and post-Islamic Arab contacts with Kerala, which was fundamentally based upon commerce. . This has resulted in the formation of an unique tradition in literature, art, and music.

MUSLIM PROBLEMS

Media , art and literature create a narrative of muslims which doesnot represent the real life of muslims. To frame muslims ,which includes many types of people belonging to different gender, ethinicity and believes, in a single box is actually an oversimplification and erasure of the life of the muslims

CLIMATE AND TERRAIN Kerala belongs to tropical climate zone . Kerala receives heavy rainfall throughout the year, which leads to the pitch roofs in most of the buildings in Kerala . The climate in Kerala is also hot and humid most of the times

STEP III

STEP II

STEP I

The minaret and dome is re interpreted with the sloping roof and traditional architecture of Kerala

The classical elements of a mosque, the minaret an the dome is added

DESIGN EVOLUTION OF THE MOSQUE

Unlike the mosque in Central Asia with open courtyard, mosques in Kerala is closed because of heavy rain.

PROTECTION OF EXISTING GREEN ZONING

The existing green in the Eastern side of the side is protected. which are mostly coconut trees.

ORIENTATION The orientation of the complex is kept in Nort West to South East direction since the Qibla (Direction to Mecca ) and the slope of the site ( 1:60) are in this direction and which are in opposite directions.

COURTYARDS

The complex is made with a series of courtayds with different hierarchy and uses .Courtyards help in the airflow and thus reduces the discomfort due to high humidity.

CENTRAL GARDAN

A persian styled central garden is made which is planted with native and ornamental plants. This courtayard can be used as an extention to the mosque

SETTLEMENT STUDY RESEARCH

SUNDER NURSERYLANDSCAPE ANALYSIS.

INTRODUCTION

CONSERVATION

CENTRAL VISTA / HERITAGE AXIS

AMPHITHEATRE

The garden complex is undergoing an extensive restoration project, undertaken by Aga Khan Trust for Culture India, jointly with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Central Public Works Department (CPWD) which currently runs the garden. The project also involves restoration work 30 near by heritage structures. Plans for the project were drawn in 2007, and work on the third phase was initiated in 2010, and is part of the larger Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Project of the Aga Khan Trust.Due lying abandoned for decades, much of the area has since overgrown, and during the initial work some 1,000 trucks of rubble was removed, before the ground was leveled and subsequently classical Persian gardens were recreated, with fountains and water channels. Two main architectural features were restored. The Lakkarwala Burj tomb is now set in a new rose garden, while the 16th-century Sunderwala Burj tomb was restored as per the orange sandstone and white lime mortar used in its original design. Its red sandstone interior walls saw entire sections of white Quranic verses being recreated.

Sunder Nursery is a 16th-century heritage garden complex adjacent to the Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Delhi. Originally known as Azim Bagh, it lies on the Mughal-era Grand Trunk Road, and is currently spread over 100 acres. The garden was originally built by the Mughals in the 16th century. Today it contains nine heritage monuments, including ASI-protected Sundarwala Burj, Sundarwala Mahal and Lakkarwala Burj. During the British rule, nursery was established to grow experimental plants, which gave it its current name, though much of the original garden was thus lost.

The garden is set to replicate the four micro-habitat zones which were part of Delhi’s original landscape namely Kohi (ridge), Bangar (alluvial), Khadar (riverine) and Dabar (marsh). In 2013, a Mughal-era lotus pond was excavated, which is being restored. An ariel view of the central axis

SUNDERWALLA MAHAL

CONTEXT Sundher nursery is an heritage complex located near to Humayuns tomb, a UNESCO world heritage site and Nizamuddin basti, which houses the famous dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and also the tomb of the famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib. All three of this regions collectively form the part of Nizamuddin Urban Renewable Project by AKTC

AZIMGANJ SARAI

Sundherwalla Burj -Before and after pictures of conservation

The ceremonial axis connects the pedestrian entrance with with Humayun’s tomb through Sundher nursery’s tranquil environment and terminates at the threshold of the 16th centuary Azimganj Sarai. The grand corridor of land scape and heritage is designed as a modern interpretation of a Mughal garden and comprises of water channels, marble fountains, flower beds, sandstone seatings inspired from the Mughal landscape of the subcontinent.

ENTRY

An amphitheaatre is created which is looking towards the Sundherwalla Burj from one side and Sundherwalla Mahal on the other, as a part of the landscape. This amphitheatre will act as medium to integrate public and culture towards the Sundher nursery.

PATHWAYS

Most of the pathways are created using red sandstones with grey sandstone borders , with very minimal mughal motifs

TOPOGRAPHY

FLORA AND FAUNA

The garden is set to replicate the four micro-habitat zones which were part of Delhi’s original landscape namely Kohi (ridge), Bangar (alluvial), Khadar (riverine) and Dabar (marsh).

DEFINING LAND MARKS

MUGHAL MOTIFS The major landmarks in the site are the 16th century mughal monuments like Sundherwalla Burj, Sundherwalla Mahal, Lakkarwala Gumbad and Azimganj serai. Which are conserved and then landscaped with Mughal land scape features and are created as landmarks which are then connected with pathways

Marble water paterre

With almost 200 acres being landscaped, the project has aimed to enhance the biodiversity by planting of over 20,000 saplings since its inception. Besides planting within the Humayun’s Tomb complex, Sundar Nursery, Batashewala complex, peripheral areas of Humayun’s Tomb and Nizamuddin Basti have also been planted with native tree saplings. A small portion of Sundar Nursery is retained as a maidan with grass. In addition to the conservation of existing vegetation forest groves and mature trees, an arboretum has been established, exhibiting the flora of the Delhi region and the different habitats (ridge/river/flood plain and a lake for water borne plants) of the city respectively. The proposed plan for the nursery includes nature and heritage trails for people to wander and discover, a world-class interpretation for the plant species as well a space for flower shows.

Sundherwalla mahal before conservation and landscaping Angoori bagh

Over 15 acres of special fruit and flowring bearing trees have been planted to attract birds. Nearly 50 bird species identified so far. Sunder Nursery enjoys an important place in the urban ecological fabric of New Delhi – constituting 370 acres of green area stretching from Purana Qila to Humayun's tomb – while remaining a major flora and avifauna habitat in the National Capital Region. Numerous species of plants have been sourced from forests, hilly and riverine tracts on the outskirts of Delhi where these species still survive – away from the city's urban sprawl.

Sandstone light post with Mughal jali

Modern interpretation of mughal motifs are extensively used for landscaping which includes arabisque patterns.Sandstone and white marbles are the major materials used o make these motifs. Sundherwalla mahal after conservation and landscaping

Angoori bagh is one of such examples which is basically sandstone arabisque landscape elements which have punctures in it , in which flowering plants are grown.

WATER BODIES

Lakes and rivulets are created inside the nursery both for recreational purposes and also for the flora and attracting the birds towars the site.

MUGHAL WATER CHANNEL SYSTEM

Also an artifital Mughal style water channel system is created on one side of the Sundherwalla burj which creates an axis towards the Azimganj sarai. Mughal water channel system for landscaping and irrigating the landscaped plants are reinterpreted in Sundher nursery. It also creates a visual axis which connects the Sundherwalla burj to Azimganj sarai

LOTUS POND A Mughal era lotus pond is recently excavated and and conserved and then provided with appropriate seating arrangements for the visitors.

SUNDER NURSERY LAKE A lake has been created in the low lying area. This will also serve as an holding tank for the water required for irrigation. This artifitial lake covers 10000 sq.m.Once filled with water the lake along with the rivulets will create an extraordinary microclimate within the sundher nursery attracting additional birds and biodiversity.

RIVULETS Within the north-eastern region of Sundar Nursery is a planned ‘micro-habitat zone ‘to display flora historically found in the diverse geological Delhi region such as the ridge, river banks and swamps. n 2015, the riverine habitat was created by creat ing water channels or rivulets, along the banks of which water loving plants and trees are planned to be grown.
