PRIMARY SCHOOL BASHUNDHARA, DHAKA SEMESTER FIVE - 2019 - DESIGN FOUR INSTRUCTOR - KHADEM ALI

THE SITE ASSIGNED IS IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. THE PROJECT REQUIRED US TO DESIGN A PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR CLASS ONE TO FIVE WITH TWO SECTIONS FOR EACH CLASS. BANGLADESH IS A COUNTRY WITH THE RICHNESS OF SIX SEASONS THAT PORTRAY A VERY VERSATILE CLIMATE. CHILDREN NOW A DAYS ARE UNABLE TO FEEL THAT THROUGH TANGIBLE EXPERIENCE IN A CONCRETE URBAN FABRIC. THE NEED OF LEARNING THROUGH ACTIVITY AND FROM NATURE IS A NECESSITY FOR THEM. THE IDEA IS TO PROVIDE THEM SUCH AN ENVIRONMENT, TO EDUCATE THEM AND MAKE THEM ROOTED ABOUT THEIR OWN COUNTRY. THE DESIGN HOLDS MAXIMUM INTERACTIVE GREEN SPACES ALL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT -MODEL

DESIGN OF A RELIGIOUS PLACE A RHYTHM BETWEEN THE PAST AND PRESENT LALBAGH, OLD DHAKA SEMESTER SIX - 2019 - DESIGN FIVE INSTRUCTOR - AIDA HASSAN

CONCEPTUAL SECTION SOFTWARE : RHINO - PHOTOSHOP - ILLUSTRATOR

GROUND FLOOR PLAN AT FIVE FEET THE SITE OLD DHAKA IS A LANDMARK OF BANGLADESH. THE INTENSELY DENSE AREA STANDS OUT FOR BOTH ITS ODDS AND BEAUTY. THE AREA DEMANDS SPACES FOR GATHERINGS TO CELEBRATE DIVERSITY IN BOTH RELIGION AND CULTURE. IT IS AN ASSET FOR HERITAGE BUILDINGS AND RICH ARCHITECTURE. THE SITE HAS AN EXISTING 300 YEARS OLD HERITAGE MOSQUE WITH A LARGE FRONT YARD. THE MOSQUE HAS A LOW CAPACITY AND FALSE RUMORS OF PARANORMAL ACTIVITIES. IN ORDER TO BANISH THESE STORIES AND MAKE ROOM FOR MORE PEOPLE THE HERITAGE BUILDING HAD TO BE OPENED FOR ALL VISITORS AND A NEW PRAYER SPACE HAD TO BE DESIGNED. BY BUILDING A NEW MOSQUE, THE SITE HOLDS A CONTRASTING EXAMPLE OF ARCHITECTURE. THE DESIGN IS A SHIFT FROM THE MUGHAL ONION DOME TO MODERN GEODESIC DOME. THE COMMUNITY SPACE HOLDS A PARK LIKE ENVIRONMENT, A BARRIER BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW. IT IS ALSO A BREATHING SPACE FOR THE PUBLIC. BY RESTORING THE ARCHAIC MOSQUE LOCATED CLOSE TO THE LALBAGH FORT, IT IS AN ADDITIONAL GEM TO LOCAL HERITAGE.

POLLI SHONDHI

CUMILLAH , BANGLADESH SEMESTER SIX - 2019 - DESIGN FIVE INSTRUCTOR - AIDA HASSAN

‘POLLI SHONDHI’, THE TITLE ITSELF GIVES AWAY THE BASIC CONCEPT WHICH MEANS, VILLAGE JUNCTION. THE PROJECT ACCOMMODATES 300 PEOPLE. THE LANDSCAPE OF BANGLADESH DIVERSIFIES IN THE HIGHWAY. STARTING FROM ENDLESS FLAT FARMLANDS TO THE VIEWS OF HILLY AREAS, THE ROAD HOLDS A GREAT VIEW. THE CHALLENGE WAS TO MERGE THE BUILDING INTO THE LANDSCAPE OF COMILLAH AND YET KEEP IT VISIBLE TO THE TRAVELERS. THE IDEA WAS THAT THE BUILDING MUST NOT BE AN INTRUSION TO THE NATURE PRESENT BUT RATHER AN UNINTERRUPTED ADDITION TO ITS BEAUTY. THE BUILDING SINKS INTO THE LANDSCAPE WITH GREEN POCKET SPACES, STRUCTURAL TRANSPARENCY, GREEN ROOFING AND THE LIGHT HOLLOWED MASSING, THUS ENSURES NATURAL CROSS VENTILATION THROUGHOUT. THE LARGE CORRIDORS AND BALCONIES ACT AS IT’S MAJOR CIRCULATION SPACES. IN ORDER TO BRING IN THE LOCALITY , THE PROJECT HOLDS A MARKETPLACE LIKE THE OPEN BAZAAR. A PLATFORM FOR THE VILLAGER’S EXTRA INCOME.

KUAKATA TOURIST ACCOMODATION KUAKATA TOURISM CENTRE, BANGLADESH

SEMESTER ELEVEN - 2021 - DESIGN NINE INSTRUCTOR - SHAILA JOARDER AND NANDINI AWAL

THE STUDIO EXERCISED ON AN URBAN GROUP PROJECT THAT EMPHASIZED ON THE OVER ALL DEVELOPMENT OF KUAKATA TOURISM CENTRE. THE PROJECT WAS CATEGORIZED INTO TOW PARTS WHERE THE STUDENTS WERE TO GIVE LARGE SCALE PROPOSAL FOR THE AREAS DEVELOPMENT. IN THE SECOND PART THE STUDENTS WERE GIVEN AN AREA FOR DETAIL AREA LAN AND PROPOSAL IN A CERTAIN SECTOR OF THE TOURISM PLAN. THE STUDENTS WERE TO KEEP IN MIND THE GOVERNMENT PROPOSAL OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT DIRECTORATE. THE PROJECT REQUIRED STUDENTS TO WORK IN A GROUP OF FOUR MEMBERS. THE TOURIST ACCOMMODATION PLAN IS DESIGNED BASED ON THE TOURIST PROJECTION OF 50 YEARS. WHAT WOULD KUAKATA BE LIKE AFTER 50 YEARS? THE IDEA WAS TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION RESPECTING EXISTING FEATURE OF OUR SITE AND NOT CHANGE KUAKATA SIGNIFICANTLY. OUR GOAL WAS TO BRING BACK THE LOST NATURAL FABRIC, ENHANCE THE CURRENT BEAUTY AND PRESERVE EXISTING NATURE. BY DOING SO, WE BELIEVE, WE CAN GIFT TOURIST AN AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE OF THE KUAKATA TOURISM CENTRE. THE MAJOR CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PROPOSALS WERE THE FOLLOWING:

1. PEDESTRIAN CORRIDOR

2. EXISTING LANDMARK

3. RESPECTING NATURE 4. NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE SPACES

5. EXISTING STRUCTURES

THE PRIMARY IDEA WAS TO GIVE TOURIST AN EXPERIENTIAL JOURNEY THOUGH MULTIPLE PEDESTRIAN CORRIDORS. THEY CONNECTS TOURIST ACTIVITIES AND PUBLICS PACES THAT LIES ADJACENT TO THE PROMENADES WHICH LEADS THEM TO THE BEACH EASILY. THE TOURIST CAN READILY ACCESS THE BEACH AND ITS ACTIVITIES AS THE STEP OUT OF THEIR RESPECTIVE ACCOMMODATION. THE PROJECT SHOWS ONE OF THE CORRIDOR EXPERIENCE THOUGH A BLOW-UP PLAN AND ITS JOURNEY THOUGH MULTIPLE SECTIONS.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION THE INSTALLATION WAS A GROUP PROJECT DONE ALONG TWO OTHER DESIGN STUDENTS. WE WERE TO DESIGN AND BUILD A STRUCTURE BY OURSELVES WITHIN GIVEN PARAMETERS. THE PROJECT ‘DRUMASROY’ IS A SERENE ESCAPE FROM THE BUSY MECHANICAL LIFE OF THE CITY. IT IS AN EXPERIENTIAL SPACE, CONSTRUCTED WITH VERY LOCAL VERNACULAR MATERIALS SUCH AS AUTHENTIC BAMBOO, JUTE STICKS AND JUTE ROPES. THE SPACE HAS MULTIPLE GATEWAYS TO MOVE AROUND FREELY ALONG MOVABLE LOCALLY MADE TOOLS AND MATS TO SIT. THIS WAS TO PROVIDE A, BENGALI VILLAGE, RURAL FEELING OF THE ‘UTHAN’ - COURT. THE SCREEN FABRICATED OUT OF JUTE STICKS GENTLY COVERS OUR VISION, ALLOWING US TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE CITY STRUCTURES ALL AROUND. AS THE BRIGHT SUNLIGHT OR THE GLOWING LANTERNS HITS THE STRUCTURE, BEAUTIFUL PATTERN OF LIGHT AND SHADOW IS CASTED ON THE FLOOR. THE STRUCTURE IS A SELF STANDING BAMBOO FRAME THAT HOLDS JUTE STICK SCREEN ON THE SURFACE. MOREOVER THE SCREEN FORMS A HYPERBOLIC PARABOLOID SURFACE. THE BEAUTY OF THE VAST SKY CAN ALSO BE FELT THROUGH THE CENTRAL OPENING IN THE CANOPY SPACE PLAYS WITH OUR SENSES AND EVENTUALLY CALMS US DOWN WITH A BLISSFUL ESCAPE. IDEA MODEL

PROJECT DESCRIPTION THE PROJECT WAS ABOUT EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITIES OF A FACADE DESIGN. WE WERE ASKED TO FABRICATE A SCREEN BY INTRODUCING OUR OWN PARAMETERS FOR IT, WITHIN A 3 FEET BY 5 FEET PANEL. THE FACADE WOULD THEN BE FORMED BY A REPETITION OF THESE PANELS. WE WERE TO BUILD A REAL SCALE SCREEN WITH ACTUAL MATERIALS ON OUR OWN IN GROUPS OF TWO STUDENTS. THE SCREEN IS MADE UP OF TWO DIFFERENT LOCAL BAMBOOS. AN INTERLOCKING TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN USED FOR STRUCTURAL RIGIDITY. PLACING THE BAMBOOS ON EITHER ENDS, ORGANIC OPENINGS FLOW ALONG THE PLANE AS PER REQUIRED VISIBILITY IN DIFFERENT HEIGHTS. THEY ALSO HAVE RECTANGULAR PUNCHES ON OPPOSITE SIDES, ALLOWING WIND FLOW AND LIGHT THROUGH THEM. THESE PERFORATIONS ALSO CAST AN INTERESTING PLAY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW. THE FACADE IS A GREEN SCREEN THAT CAN HOLD SMALL PLANT POTS OR AIR PLANTS, WHICH REST UPON THE BAMBOO JUNCTIONS. FACADE

THE DESIGN IDEA IS DERIVED FROM A PIECE OF CLOTH. SKETCHING LINES ON IT’S WRINKLES GENERATED SHAPES AND INTERSECTING LINES. THIS LANGUAGE OF FOLDS AND CREASES REFLECTS UPON THE BUILDING AND LANDSCAPE CREATING RELATABLE ENVIRONMENT THAT STUDENTS CAN CONNECT TO. THE UNDULATED ROOF, SLANTED FACADE, BUILDING FORM AND THE SCREEN, ALL TOGETHER EXPRESSES A UNIFORM STYLE. THE MASSING EMPHASIZES ON LINEAR FORMS ALONG CROSS VENTILATION. THE BUILDING EVOLVES AROUND A CENTRAL PLAZA BY MAXIMIZING RIVER VIEW AND OUTDOOR ACCESS. THE GOAL WAS TO INSPIRE THE STUDENTS TO PUSH THEIR CREATIVITY THROUGH THIS DESIGN.
