COMMUNITY HOUSING STUDIO SITE, SANAND MATERIAL: BRICK AND CONCRETE

The site is located on the tp raod. It is an agricultural land. The site area is 6000sq.m. TP road id 8m wide which connects directly to the national highway. View towards NH947

The site was meant to develop a selfsustaining unit for farmers in the area. The most important factor was the balance between providing amenities according to climate and the nature of spaces.

MATERIAL STUIDO SITE: LUDIYA, KUTCH MATERIAL: BAMBOO

The site

Ahmedabad to Bhuj

The site for our material studio was located in a secluded area in Kutch in close vicinity of Ludia Gaam. The given material for exploration was Bamboo. The studio focused on making a material exploration institute located strategically in order to encourage the communities around it to visit and learn skills related to bamboo construction and technology. The built-form in itself had to be a manifestation of the material in every which way. The idea was to understand the properties of the material and to challenge them in the course of designing. Another agenda at hand was to design a module for bamboo and repeat it in various proportions and mannerisms to condense to different nature of spaces required by the program.

Ludiya to Site Following the guidelines, after a thorough case study of the Kimbell Art Museum, a completely contradicting building type, to identify a challenge. I then derived the module shown alongside in the images. I faced challenges while coming up with joineries in order to imitate the smooth arch in the museum. However, after a lot of trial and error, I could resolve the joineries to achieve a fairly arched shape. I then repeated the module to create various spaces. I tried to develop proportionally large interrupted spaces using wide arches while using Bamboo as a material.

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY The exercises emphasised on technical detailing of layers of building skin and material. The external facade of a building is an intelligent skin regulating temperature and light, they also determine its very appearance. By appropriate use of the building material, the facade has become an important part in building architecture. The size and location of the openings are placed in such a manner so that the optimum amount of light is perceived here.

WORKING DRAWING ON PRIMARY SCHOOL SITE: AHMEDABAD MATERIAL: BRICK AND CONCRETE

The site is situated opposite to CEE in a mixed- residential, commercial and institutional context. It has a gradual slope with roads on two sides and buildings on others. The process mainly involved explorations of the nature of light required in different spaces through abstract models representing the same for our institution. Local primary schools were visited to understand spatial arrangements and functionality. Apart from this, Zen gardens were studied to understand the importance of semi-open and open spaces and its relation to the building. The primary school had to be designed keeping in mind the children’s behavior and likely through their minds. The central idea was to provide a dedicated open play area to each class such that the lines of vision are considered to not disturb the other classes in progress. The other areas of the school such as admin, teachers’ room, etc., where placed separately to zone the building into private and public, in order to ensure smooth functioning of classes. Other spaces such as the multipurpose hall, etc., were placed considering ease of access and in some cases, to insulate.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION DETAILS In order to understand the pragmatic aspects of a toilet, we designed a toilet with basic amenities and designed it in and out, included the flooring, placement of fixtures, plumbing, etc. We produced a set of drawings and rectifed the design issues in them. To take this forward, we made a 1:10 part section model of the same bathroom with all the plumbing exposed.

MANDANGADH The workshop was a collaborative effort by PYHT (Put Your Hands Together), TIC (Thumbimpressions collaborative) for IDEA(Institute of Design Environment and Architecture). It was organised for students to understand the implication of natural materials using traditional knowledge and modern techniques. The intent of the workshop “DESIGN AND BUILD was to design and execute the construction by the participants to get the on-site experience. The task given was to design a pavilion with bamboo trusses and rammed earth wall, sketches and mock- up models were made and further developed through interactive discussions between the participants and faculties. As the truss was ready to install, rammed earth wall was erected with multiple layers of different composition that were explored by participants. The workshop guided participants to think sensibly towards the use of natural materials keeping in mind the parameters related to design, on-site problems, climate and material.

The below sketches explains the design of the truss.

BASIC DESIGN The subject was to exploring forms and how these can be transformed into spaces and functions. No restriction in terms of other technicalities were placed so that these explorations could be made to the fullest. Also, the picture on left is an abstraction of a city. I have tried to show the high rised buildings, racing track, etc by making the plan and continuing it with the elevations and sections. There are elements like playground, windows coming out of the facade, open spaces on the upper floor, street lights, etc that shows the activity hapening on the city. This particular medium was chosen to show how things in the city build up organically but with stark expressions at the same time.

RAMESWARAM The study program carried out at Rameswaram mainly focused on analysing the impact of the presence of Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple on its surrounding development, activities and the urban fabric. Over a period of 10 days, we mapped activities and made observations that interested us. Later, all the data and respective analysis was compiled together in a publication (still due).
