VENTURI SKETCH

T h i s e x e rc i s e w a s t h e f i r s t I u n d e rtook outside of studio time. At this point, I was completely untaken by the brief, and felt the need to kickstart any sort of passion. T h e a i m o f t h i s e x e rc i s e w a s t o re a l i s e w h a t a b o u t t h e b r i e f I d i d n ’t like. I had always associated the Motel with Route 66, and American G o o g i e A rc h i t e c t u re . I n ‘ L e a r n i n g f ro m L a s Ve g a s ’ ( 1 9 7 2 ) , R o b e r t Ve n t u r i a n d D e n i s e S c o t t B ro w n e x p l o re t h e m e r i t s o f t h i s s t y l e o f a rc h i t e c t u re . I s h o u l d n o t e t h a t I d o n ’t e n j o y t h e a rc h i t e c t u re e i t h e r p ro d u c e s , a n d s o h a v i n g re a d t h e book, I decided to sketch exactly what I thought either would design. T h i s w o u l d s e r v e a s a re p re s e n t a t i o n o f w h a t I e n d e a v o u re d n o t t o d e s i g n . REFLEKTIONS THE MOTEL. H a v i n g b r i e f l y e x p l o re d w h a t i t w a s I did not want to design, I then e x p l o re d t h e n o t i o n o f t h e m o t e l i n m o re d e t a i l . A t t h i s s t a g e o f t h e p ro c e s s I f o u n d the motel to be charming, and w a n t e d t o m a k e re f e re n c e s t o i t s significance on some level, albeit not a formal one. M i c h a e l a n d G y v e l W i t z e l e x p l o re i n “Legendary Route 66� (2007) what makes the motel in Middle, Modern America. This form of brainstorming allowed me to find a clear vision of what t ro p e s a n d c o n v e n t i o n s re l e v a n t t o the motel it was that I wanted to f o l l o w.

I i m m e d i a t e l y f e l t a s t h o u g h t h e re a re m a n y d r a w b a c k s w h e n b u b b l e d i a g r a m m i n g , b e c a u s e t h e n a t u re o f re l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n e l e m e n t s i s n e v e r c o n s i d e re d ( o r r a t h e r, i t c a n immediately give connotations of seperatedness, or exclude notions o f h i e r a rc h y ) . REFLEKTIONS CONVERGENCE. The most intruiging part of the brief was, to me, being given the opportunity to design a single space which could serve as the hub f o r t h re e v e r y d i ff e re n t d i s p e r s e d i n t e re s t g ro u p s . The exploration of this theme became the focus of my design intent, a n d n a t u r a l p h e n o m e n a w e re u s e d as inspiration. F l o c k i n g i s t h e c o h e re n c e o f a u t o n o m o u s a g e n t s w i t h re g a rd s t o a l l c i rc u m s t a n c e , i t i s t h e p a t t e r n i n w h i c h s c h o o l s o f b i rd s a n d f i s h m o v e a n d i n t e r a c t w i t h o n e a n o t h e r. A metaball is an isosurface, a form a p p ro x i m a t e d b y t h e i n t e r a c t i o n of forms and lines; the manner in w h i c h a t o m s a re c o v e re d b y a s k i n . REFLEKTIONS T H E D E AT H O F T H E C A R . A t t h i s s t a g e o f t h e d e s i g n p ro c e s s , I a m u n i n s p i re d w i t h t h e b r i e f . T h e d i ff i c u l t i e s i n v o l v e d i n d e s i g n i n g for the car immediately begin to make me consider the banality of designing for a form of transport which will likely not be dominant in use (particularly in this part of the c i t y ) f o r m u c h l o n g e r. This encourages me to look at the p ro c e s s o f a p p ro x i m a t i o n - I l o o k e d in to several ways of making a constructable object, but this manner was one which appealed to me g re a t l y. I c o u l d p i c t u re t h i s m o n o l i t h i n c o n c re t e , s e r v i n g a s b o t h a tombstone, and a celebration of t h e m o t o rc a r, c e n t r a l t o t h e b u i l d ing. I s t i l l d o n ’t k n o w w h y p e s s i m i s m w a s s u c h a d r i v i n g f o rc e i n t h i s p o rtion of design, but I am immensely happy with the outcome of this passionate exploration.

REFLEKTIONS FORM AND VOID. Again the dichotomy between form a n d v o i d b e g a n t o e n t e r t h e a rc h i tectural dialogue of the design. Exploring this dialogue became the o v e r a rc h i n g t h e m e w h i c h w o u l d b e re f e re d t o i n t h e p ro c e s s e s o f d e tailing and formal arrangement. I c a m e a c ro s s t r a n s u l e c e n t c o n c re t e , w h i c h i s i n e s s e n c e , s t r u c t u r a l l y s o u n d c o n c re t e w i t h tiny perforations to allow for light p e n e t r a t i o n , re s u l t i n g i n a s l i g h t l y transulcent, load bearing material. To c re a t e a w a t e r- t i g h t a n d s u i t a b l e b u i l d i n g m a t e r i a l , I re f e re n c e d t h e B o t s f o rd S m o k i n g P a v i l l i o n . I n u s i n g a similar skin to clad a curtain-wall glazing system, the pavilion would be watertight and maintain its unique aesthetic.
