OBJECTIVES Medical University of South Carolina is the client for this project. Main requirement is to provide a comprehensive design for ASC (Ambulatory Surgery Center) and MOB (Medical Office Building) Buildings. It includes Surgery Suits, Pre/PostOps, Imaging, Othopedics and General Examination rooms, PT/OT Gym, Retail Shops and Restaurant/Cafe. Project site is located in West Ashley in Charleston.

44

Site plan top view render demonstrates how buildings have tremendous access to view and daylight while sustainable parking area keeps most of the parking spaces under the shade. Charleston has a very hot and humid climate.

MUSC Campus Main Entrance Perspective ASC, MOB, and Community buildings are separated to maximize access to view and daylight. At the same time, a fourth element connects all buildings while keeping the separate.

Portfolio | Summer 2020

The main entrance to the campus is introduced by a 4 lane boulevard, which serves as the main vehicular access spine for all buildings. It also cuts through the buildings along the connecting bridge where pick-up and drop-off area is located.

Parking in Park Rendering No parking space will remain under direct sunlight for more than 3 hours each day.

Pick-up and Drop-off Area Under the Bridge

ASC building is separated from rest of the facility using a three-story atrium to provide more isolation. It also serves as family waiting area right next to Post-Op.

Portfolio | Summer 2020

A paving system is introduced under the bridge where buildings connect and pick-op/drop-off areas are located. Paving system works as a bumper as well to slow down the traffic and bring sense of safety for people crossing between buildings. It also provides a very safe and covered environment and easy access to all buildings for all patients, families and visitors.

Connection between ORs and Pre-Op/Post-Op rooms is through a core of four elevators, which each pair can serve as “back & front” and/or “staff & supplies”. This type of vertical connection is tested on surgery center in New York City. Post Occupancy Evaluation shows that vertical connection has worked successfully for this center.

A comprehensive renovation process for Watauga Medical Center Including inpatient and outpatient facilities. WMC currently has an old facility including Hill-Burton building. The facility is starting to come short in responding to county healthcare needs. Client’s initial desire is to add an outpatient facility and eventually an inpatient facility to replace the whole hospital. Complete replacement is proposed for next 30-40 years. Replacement will take place in three phases including construction of inpatient facility, construction of outpatient facility and finally demolishing the existing hospital and replacing it with community related programs.

Greenhouse Lobby Includes a enclosed waiting area that can also be served as dining space. Vegetation from outside grows into the lobby and provide a therapeutic lobby in front of main entrance.

Loading Dock behind the future facilities takes advantage of the slope and hides under the topography surface. It creates and opportunity to make a horizontal underground connection without digging down into earth. It serves loading dock as well as power plan right next to it.

OBJECTIVES A comprehensive design for a universal Pre-op/Post-op room that can be able to fit to different healthcare settings, layouts and care-models. Design starts with Post-op room layout of a previous design for MUSC Ambulatory Surgery Center. Objective was to achive a universal room layout by considering all aspects of room requirements from technical, mechanical, movements, eye-sights, equipment movements, equipment positions etc.

Conceptual Objectives Diagram

Different Possible Room Formation

Initial Intention was to optimize use-of-space buy testing different room layout geometries. Modification of room layout starts with a seris of taxonomy using deformation and slanting walls of the both right and left sides. After the study, 10 degree wall slant was chose to be the most effective layout by providing the best use-of-space, easiest stretcher movement and better eye sight for patient, family and staff to corridor and nature.

Another significant element that provides more freedom in terms of movements and positions is a sleek and slim ceiling-mounted designed boom. This boom carries nurses Work Station as well as Vitals on its arms. These arms can be located nearly anywhere in the room.

Portfolio | Summer 2020

Since all the required elements in the room are places on the boom, there is no need for any other type of horizontal surface. This facts significantly results in easier cleaning process and shorter turn-over times, which leads to higher percentage of room utilization.

61

Designed Boom brings a lot of freedom and allows for a wide variety of different movements and positions for nurses and staff. All of these variations works with both patients and family.

Mazious geometry is inspired by the “Topo the World” story written by Jean-Pierre Petit. Mazious’ geometry is a combination of a three-dimensional Mobius with a maze by keeping inherit of both geometries. The overall geometry shows a Mobius, but the section shows a maze

MAZIOUS

Winter 2015

The gap on one of the sides of Mazious’ sections serves as entrance. This occurs when the gap kisses the ground and then starts to spin around the Mazious. This will allow the light to penetrate into the space and serve as an opening

Portfolio | Summer 2020

In order to explore the whole geometry with all spatial qualities, twenty five loops are needed, as each loop serves as an internal segment. In each loop, a unique spatial experience will happen, caused by the exact positioning of the person in Mazious

There are several strips of glass that make a reflection more effective and complicated during the viewer’s experience. The more you go up in the Blending Wall, the more complicated the reflection experience gets

For Map House, the middle section of the floors are made out of glass, making that segment transparent. These glassy gaps are bigger on higher floors. By this manner, an observer who stands on the ground floor, in the middle of the gap, sees all of the frames the same size. The perspective affects the observer’s view.

Portfolio | Summer 2020

Each floor has a layer including specific information about Botanical Garden map. By standing on the ground floor, an observer is able to have an over-layering view of all map information, at the same time.

71

A long hallway separates two reflection rooms from each other. It allows the viewer to forget the previous experience and get ready for the next more complicated experience, by seeing it as a glowing room at the end of hallway

Map House’s vertical reflection of the sky and environment makes an illusion for the viewer. This makes him/her to have a feeling that resembles like walking on air

Map House is placed at the edge of the woods. This is the way it appears to a viewer walking in the woods
