Seals your split-ends to give you beautiful hair till the ends You touch your hair countless times in a day. You’re probably even doing it right now. Stop for a minute and look closely at the ends of your hair, what do you see? Split-ends? If you’re not too sure, take the Dove Braid Test. The 2-step Dove Braid Test: UÊ À> `ÊÞ ÕÀÊ > ÀÊ>ÃÊÞ ÕÊ À > ÞÊÜ Õ `° UÊ,ÕLÊÌ iÊi `ÃÊ vÊÞ ÕÀÊ > ÀÊ>}> ÃÌÊÞ ÕÀÊV ii ° Does it feel rough? If yes, it means your ends are damaged. Unfortunately, for you the result of this test is something to worry about, as you are up against split-ends. With split-ends come all kinds of questions and doubts. They may not give you sleepless nights but surely they are there at the back of your mind. Whether at home, at work or even when you’re out with friends, you are constantly thinking about split-ends.

While your hair may appear healthy at the crown, the ends have a different story to tell SPLIT-END WOES

THE BEGINNING

Why does this happen? That’s because your hair at the crown is thicker compared to the tips. As the length of your hair increases, the tips of your hair become more prone to damaged. And it doesn’t take long before the hair shaft opens up giving way to split-ends. No wonder, that rough feeling at the tips, makes you uncomfortable. ,iÃÕ Ì]ÊÞ ÕÊ >ÞÊ ÛiÊ >Û }Ê long tresses but, split-ends keep you from following your heart. Although split-ends is a common hair problem among women, little is known why it happens in the first place.

As your hair grows longer it also goes through damage especially at the tips. This damage in turn leads to split-ends. Knowingly or unknowingly you damage your hair throughout the day which later makes way for splitends. Here are a few reasons behind the damage: UÊ/ Õ} ÊÞ ÕÊVÀ>ÛiÊv ÀÊÃÕ Ã i]Ê being out in the sun for long hours makes your hair dry and frizzy. UÊ9 ÕÊ ÛiÊiÝ«iÀ i Ì }ÊÜ Ì Ê > ÀÊ colour but, it also strips off the protective layer and causes damage. UÊ ÊÌÀÞ }ÊÌ Ê ii«ÊÕ«ÊÜ Ì ÊÌ iÊÌÀi `Ã]Ê you go overboard with hot irons, blow dryers and other styling devices. UÊ9 ÕÀÊ > ÀÊ ii`ÃÊV>ÀiÊÜ i ÊÞ ÕÊ comb it. Forcing your comb thorough entangled hair can cause it to fray. UÊ-Ì>ÞÊ ` ÀÃÊv ÀÊ }Ê ÕÀÃÊÕ `iÀÊ the AC and it makes your hair dry.

PROMOTION

Dos when it comes to split-ends Indulging in hair treatments often leaves your hair dry and frizzy, causing damage. But it’s okay to experiment, as long as you use the right product. Always comb your hair gently. If you see entangled hair, don’t force your comb rather untangle and then proceed. Tie your hair back before going on a ride. Wind in your hair leads to entanglement of hair, which causes damage. Have a balanced diet. Make sure your diet gives you ample amount of protein for healthier hair.

All’s Well That Ends Well When your hair splits at the ends, you may try and bun it all or curl your hair inwards, or even hide it behind a stunning hair clip. But you know these tricks don’t really work to repair the problem of split-ends. Even your ordinary shampoo doesn’t treat damage at the tips of your hair. Finally, you have to trim your hair, even when your heart is all-set on growing it a bit longer. Not Anymore! ÌÀ `ÕV }ÊÌ iÊ iÜÊ ÛiÊ-« ÌÊ `Ê,iÃVÕiÊ System, its ¼ moisturising milk nourishes your hair and its breakthrough split-end technology corrects hair damage to give you up to 4x less split-ends from end to end.

Editor’s Letter

Recently, I read a real-life report in Cosmo US that will stay with me for a long time. 25-year-old Theodora Blanchfield weighed in at 100 kilos... and felt her whole life was being ruined by that number. As Theodora saw it, guys wouldn’t flirt with her because she was “chubby”, she wasn’t getting interviews at the right workplaces, and life just wasn’t how she wanted it to be. So she signed up with a fitness coach who put her through a tough workout and strict diet, and by the time she was 27, she was a whopping 60-kilos thinner. As she had imagined, life did change—she was making new friends and dating, she started a blog on losing weight, and got a column with a glossy magazine (her biggest dream). All seemed perfect except for one important thing...Theodora still wasn’t happy. She was struggling with crippling panic attacks, bouts of anxiety, and feeling of being out-of-control. Finally, anti-depressants and therapy helped her deal with the situation, and also made her realise that she needed to stop putting so much pressure on herself. Why am I telling you this story? One, because this is our annual Body Issue, and two, because I want to emphasise a surprising fact—the secret to loving your life, and body, may have nothing to do with what shows up on the weighing scale. We often fantasize that life will be perfect if we’re skinny. And while the thinner you may fit into tigher jeans or meet more men, the real you won’t change that much. If you’ve been battling feelings of anxiety, poor self worth, or dissatisfaction, they will likely remain. That’s because until you accept and love yourself, no amount of weight loss will make you happy. Spend time doing things you enjoy, gather joy from friends, family, and work, eat and exercise well for better health. Instead of ‘I will be skinny’, your goal needs to be this: ‘I will be stronger, fitter, healthier (not skinnier), both on the outside and inside’. Enjoy our Body Issue,

Your Perfect This just in: there’s a magic formula that helps determine the ideal hemline for attention-worthy pins... Australia-based mathematician, Lily Serna, has put her skills to stylish use by creating an equation for the most flattering skirt length for your body. Here’s how it works: measure the length of your body from shoulder tip, plus heel height, and divided it by the magic number 1.618. The result is your customised golden number, which when measured from your shoulder tip, indicates exactly where your skirt should fall till. The science behind it? Lily told the Herald Sun that 1.618 has been linked to the Egyptian pyramids, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the facial dimensions of attractive people. Have you got your tape measure out yet? 5 DAYS, 5 TRICKY TRENDS! We challenged the bright and young Alaiia Gujral (also supermodel Feroze Gujral’s daughter!) to try tough S/S13 looks for a week to see if they work in real time! By Priyam Chaturvedi

Peek-a-boo fabrics remain a runway staple, season after season. The key to carrying this gutsy trend is to work it in small doses. Opt for one sheer piece at a time, and balance it with a solid fabric to avoid looking over the top. Think a sheer maxi skirt with a monochrome peplum top, or a semi-sheer shirt paired with a boyfriend blazer. TRICKY TREND #1 WEARING SHEER FABRICS

fast glam TRICKY TREND #2 MIXING STRIPES AND SPOTS Stripes and polka-dots are classic wardrobe must-haves, but this season is all about pairing them together for look-at-me-now status! Remember to keep colours in the same family and have one print smaller in scale than the other. PS: curvy girls should avoid wearing horizontal stripes as they add to the bulk.

I wasn’t sure about mixing two strong patterns together, but was pleasantly surprised with the results. Now I know I’ll wear this combination more often!

Polka-dot shirt and striped skirt, both Zara; patent pumps, Christian Louboutin

TRICKY TREND #3 PAIRING BRIGHTS TOGETHER Colour-blocked, bright separates look great on the runway, and right now, it’s all about pairing jewel tones together! Think fiery reds, punchy fuschias and deep greens. The silhouettes make all the difference, helping keep the look more ‘serious’.

This look is very professional and fash-forward at the same time. I chose to wear it to a formal college presentation. .) 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

Light knit top, Marks & Spencer; peplum skirt, bYSI; bow pumps, Salvatore Ferragamo; crossbody bag, SVJ by Sanya V Jain

fast glam TRICKY TREND #4 PRINT ON PRINT It’s no longer about matching patterns together. Play mix and match with your prints (like floral and graphic) to create a striking look. Remember to keep one print the hero of your outfit.

This is the ideal summer dress to run around in. I wore this for a Sunday brunch with my besties and felt totally stylish!

Floral-print dress, bYSI; printed shirt, Marks & Spencer

TRICKY TREND #5 PAIRING LEATHER & SHINE FOR DAY Sounds scary, we know, but this tough combination is more versatile than you think. The trick is to team your leather and embellished pieces with items that are obviously casual. In this case, the leather shirt, white button-down, and flats help.

This is my favourite! It’s both comfy and glam, and the denim shirt makes it more day (and concert) appropriate. .+ 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

Pleated body suit and skirt, J Mendel; bracelets, Jennifer Fisher

She has built a global business empire and amassed 17 million Twitter followers, shares top billing in a new movie, and is expecting a baby that’s getting almost as much buzz as Kate Middleton’s. But Kim Kardashian says her biggest new project isn’t any of these: it’s growing up. By Amy Wallace; Photographs by Matthias Vriens-McGrath

Four

tiny bottles, each with a secret code name, sit on a shiny white table in front of Kim Kardashian, awaiting inspection. Inside the vials are versions of her latest fragrance, Glam, which is being tweaked to appeal to Japanese consumers. Whatever the 32-year-old beauty chooses today will be sold overseas under her name, so she is taking this smell-off seriously. It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, but Kardashian is hard at work. Pregnant but not showing, she’s dressed in a filmy, grey-pink Lanvin top, a form-fitting skirt, and pointy-toed Balmain heels. The Glam for Japan meeting is the first of three today; next up is a look at marketing materials for an upcoming fragrance (her sixth) and a strategy session with the heads of her online shoe company, ShoeDazzle. This is probably not how you expected Kardashian’s weekend to unfold. She is, after all, a girl who is famous for having fun—sometimes too much of it. On Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she’s forever trying to drag her sisters, Kourtney and Khloé, out clubbing. While her 2006 sex tape with singer Ray J feels like ancient history, her 72-day marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries and her subsequent romance with singer Kanye West keep her constantly in the tabloids. It’s hard not to assume that’s by design. Nonetheless, she tells me: “2013 for me is about scaling back. I want to focus on the few projects that I’m passionate about and not spread myself too thin.” To which I can only ask myself the same question that has nagged me since I first shook her hand: is this girl for real? Full disclosure: this is not the first time I’ve met Kim Kardashian. Our first encounter occurred five years ago on L.A.’s 101 Freeway when, inching along in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I rear-ended the woman famed for her bodacious backside. It was my fault completely. She could’ve been pissy or freaked out as we exchanged insurance information. Instead, she was sweet. No big deal. “In situations like that, emergencies, I’m super-calm,” she says, laughing when I reveal that I am the distracted driver who hit her in 2008. “Especially with material things, I feel like it’s not the end of the world as long as everyone’s safe. I’m like that in any stressful situation. Even when my father passed away, I sat down and I said to everyone, ‘Okay, guys, what are we supposed to learn from this? We all need to grow up.’” Kim was 22 when Robert Kardashian, a lawyer best known for serving on O.J. Simpson’s defense team, died of cancer. She was going through her first divorce, splitting from a man she’d married at 19, and she admits she relied on her dad for counsel and support. On his deathbed, though, he told her he knew she’d be okay. “I’ll never have to worry about you,” she recalls him saying. “You’ll always make it happen. Take care of your brother and sisters.” She promised she 6EG>A '%&( 8DHBDEDA>I6C &&&

would. “I really took that to heart. I was always working. I had a job at 16 in a clothing store. I love to work.” Even as early as high school, she says, she’d been planning her wedding. “Oh, I had, you know, books of colour palettes,” she says with a smile. “I’ve always pictured my life as going a certain way, as being married. I’m super traditional.” So when Kourtney got pregnant with her first child in 2009, Kim was judgmental. “I was like, ‘You’re not married! How could you do this?’ I was really firm and strict. But she was like, ‘Marriage isn’t what I want’. And later, I realised she had a better family life than I did.” Looking back on why she’s made some bad decisions in the past and looking forward to what she wants to change in the future—both issues are at the top of her mind for Kim these days. While still not divorced, she is about to start a family with West. “I’ve always said that I wanted kids, but I don’t think I ever would have been ready until now,” she says. And for the record, she’s loving pregnancy. “I feel good. Nothing’s slowed me down,” she says, adding happily that when it comes to weight gain, she expects “I’ll definitely be up there”. Meanwhile, she and West have recently bought a $10 million, 9,000-square-foot house together and are re-modelling and expanding it by another 4,000 feet. But more important than the lavish trappings of their union, she insists, is this: she feels connected to West, who she met in 2003, in ways she never thought possible. “Sometimes you’re just not ready. A person could have it all, and you’re not ready for it all. But this is where I probably always should have been,” she says, adding that marriage “is something I know that we both want in our future, but I don’t have this sense of urgency about it. I have this best friend who understands me and helps me through all my tough experiences, and vice versa, you know? It just feels like this is it for me.” Forgive her for being a hopeless romantic, she says, but her life with West feels “meant to be”. Then she gets unexpectedly analytical. “You know, there are relationships that are all the way insecure. There’s a lot of passion, but there’s so much distrust. I’ve had those, and you can never quite let them go. Then there are those relationships that are so safe, you know they’ll never, ever stray. But that’s not really what you want. So I used to think, ‘Can you really have it all?’ The trust, the

Neither is being pregnant. No, the biggest change is, quite simply, that in the wake of her second failed marriage, she feels she’s gotten deeper. Allegations that she married Humphries to draw attention to her show once crushed her. (“Who would do that for ratings? There are real lives involved. That’s not who I am.”) But she’s not crushed anymore. How she made this leap, she says, was to retreat from the world for six months. She never left her mother’s house, never put on make-up, never went out clubbing, and she cancelled her press. “I was like, I need to sit with myself for a minute.” “I’ve always been about the image. I cared so much about what the media was thinking. But now, I just don’t care as much. I feel like I’m in high school again,” she says, in a good way. “Back then, I had no worries because I only surrounded myself with the people I knew were my real friends.” Today, she adds, “If someone were to say, ‘Well, what would you have done differently?’ I’d say, ‘Nothing.’ I think you need to make mistakes. And I like this person today better than who I was a year ago. People think they know me, but they don’t know everything,” she says. “I know people think we’re fair game because we live our lives on a reality show. But we’re just a fun, crazy family, and we pride ourselves on being open. Still, as we get older and as we’ve been burned a bit by the media, you want to be more closed off. You don’t want to share everything. At some point, you have to draw lines to just maintain and guard yourself a little bit. It’s like I’m Q working backwards.” Fashion Director: Michelle McCool; Hair: Chris McMillan for Living Proof/ soloartists.com; Make-Up: Pati Dubroff at The Wall Group; Manicurist: Elle at The Wall Group; Producer: Yael Knopf for First Shot Productions.

The Sex Moves That Bring You Closer Any trick that makes sex hotter for both of you will make you feel more connected—in and out of bed. We asked women to reveal their most game-changing moves. By Annie Daly Next time, she vowed to wear comfortable shoes

THE LIFT “Don’t get too jealous, but my guy is insanely good at giving oral. One time, right when I was about to come, I lifted my butt a few inches off the mattress and clenched my butt muscles for a couple of seconds. The tension made my orgasm stronger than ever!” —Rita, 25

.........

THE KNEEL “My boyfriend and I made up a move, and now when we use it, we feel extra close, since it’s our thing. I lie down on my left side and pull my top leg as close to my chest as I can. Then he kneels behind me and goes in, so our bodies are perpendicular. He strokes my boobs and hips and hits my clitoris —Layla, 29 perfectly!”

.........

always curious about S&M but felt it was too kinky for me. Then one time, my guy held my hands over my head and wouldn’t let go...and I loved it! It felt like I’m being taken, but it was comfortable —Neha, 27 since I wasn’t tied up.”

.........

THE CLOSER “When my guy is getting close, I pause and get into doggiestyle. Then he touches me down there for the final moments as he’s thrusting, and it’s nearly guaranteed that we’ll come at the same time. When we do, it makes us feel more bonded.” —Lisha, 27

He kept my clothes on—he just reached inside my jeans to touch me for a few hot seconds, then said, ‘More later’. I was such a sucker for that! I’m not dating that guy anymore, but I stole his trick and tried it on the new guy I’m dating. He, like me, loved it. Now I try to give him some sort of preview (even just a thigh touch or an ear whisper) as often as possible. It makes us really anticipate what’s going to happen later on. By the time we get to bed, we’re practically —Bianca, 20 bursting.”

THE SQUEEZE “In my opinion, the whole point of being on top is to feel like you’re dominating. My trick: when I’m sliding up and down his penis, I squeeze my PC muscles on my way down. The pressure my clenching creates makes me feel in control. Judging from my guy’s sighs, he digs it, too!” —Ekta, 25

.........

THE TEASE “Once when I was playing around solo, I realised that I loved the friction my underwear created against my clitoris, so I brought the move to my boyfriend’s attention. Now, I’ll stay clothed for a bit longer, and when we do finally strip, the sex is extra intense because of the feeling of urgency.” —Ruth, 27

THE TROPICAL TRICK “My guy spread coconut oil around my vagina, then went down on me (it’s safe!). Knowing I taste good relaxes me so I enjoyed —Lydia, 27 the moment more.”

THE DIG “I used to be timid in bed, but the move that brought me out of my shell is when I dug my nails into my guy’s butt when we were in missionary and pulled him closer. It’s an easy way to show you’re into it without shouting.”

.........

—Priya, 27

How to Talk DIRTY!

(WITHOUT SOUNDING RIDICULOUS) Yes, it’s possible. And if you do it right, it’s so, so worth it. Here’s what you need to know. By Lux Alptraum

&'' 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

W

e all want to be that mythical sexy girl who always knows the perfect naughty something to whisper in her guy’s ear. But in reality, most of us are stumped as to what sounds hot instead of cheesy or porny (sorry, Fifty Shades, you were no help), much less how to feel comfortable saying it. As the editor of fleshbot. com, I’ve spent the past four years watching countless hours of porn and reading page after page of erotica. And yes, I’ve cringed my way through some of the least sexy dialogue known to humankind. But I’ve also learned that done right, a little dirty talk can make an already sexy affair downright unforgettable... because it keeps you in the moment. How many times have you found yourself distracted during a hookup, more worried about how you look than how good the action feels? Telling your partner how awesome he feels inside you forces you to focus on exactly what you’re feeling and helps push away any

love & lust mental distractions. If you have never been one to talk dirty or aren’t sure if you can pull it off, take it from me: anyone can master the art. All you need is some inspiration (and some practice). Here’s what to do...

START SIMPLE The bedroom doesn’t have to be a venue to spout the filthiest thing you can imagine. Phrases as simple as “Oh, that’s hot” or “That feels so good” will get temperatures rising. As DJ, a 34year-old writer, explains, “Enthusiasm for what’s happening goes a long way.”

CREATE AN ALTER EGO By day, you’re a well-brought-up girl who never forgets to say please and thank you. But behind closed doors, you can take on any persona you like. Maybe you’re a seductive spy or an adventurous French dancer. Whomever you decide to be, playing a character can help you experiment with all sorts of dirty phrases you never thought you’d hear yourself say. Need help getting into character? Turn on a playlist or a soundtrack that gets you hot, and lose yourself in the music.

ASK FOR WHAT FEELS GOOD Any straight man will tell you there’s nothing hotter than a woman who knows what she wants in bed...except a woman who isn’t afraid to ask for it. If you’re at a loss for words, tell your partner what hot, dirty things you’d love for him to do. If he’s already doing them, tell him how much you enjoy them.

GAUGE HIS DIRTYTALK THRESHOLD If you have no clue whether your guy’s dirty-talk meter is set to ‘a little naughty’ or ‘downright filthy’, do a sneaky little test. Ask him, “What would you like me to do to you? Details, please.” And see what words he uses and how risqué he’s willing to get. Then follow his lead.

&') 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

DONT WORRY ABOUT SOUNDING SILLY When you’re aroused, your brain works differently—a lot of things that seem ridiculous when you’re in your normal state of mind can suddenly seem really, really hot. “It’s primal,” says Sanya, a 33-year-old graphic designer, “so it’s all fair game.” And if you say something dirty and he acts weird? If he’s a jerk about it, leave—this guy’s not worth messing around with anyway. If he’s

just a bit thrown off, just smile and say, “What I meant was...”

GO AHEAD: TRY A FOUR-LETTER WORD Maybe you’re not big on cursing— especially if you’re not big on cursing—try a little swearing in bed. Like a primal scream, you won’t know how good an F-bomb feels until you let it out. And your partner will love Q how worked up you are.

THE HOTTEST THING SHE’S EVER SAID IN BED WONDERING WHAT GUYS REALLY WANT TO HEAR WHEN THINGS GET HOT AND HEAVY? WE ASKED THEM! “I was hooking up with this girl for the first time, and after I made her come, she looked at me and said, ‘Where the f*ck did you come from?’” —Nikhil, 25

“Go ahead: try your best to pin me down.”

“I want to tie you up and do things to you.” —Anand, 23

“It’s hot having someone who’s known for being composed just say, ‘I want your [whatever you want to call his penis] now.’” —Chris, 30

—Kashif, 27

I

f you want to turn off a guy fast, allow me to recommend three magic words. To guys, these words are the Holy Grail of annoying things girls say, the abracadabra of instantaneous mood killers, the uglier cousin to the infamous lose-lose query: “Do I look fat in this?” The three words we pray you will never say to us (drum roll)...‘I look fat’. Imagine the worst thing a guy could say to you (thought joggers: ‘I’m in love with your sister’, ‘I killed a man...’), multiply it by 10, add a full weekend of nothing but golf on TV—and you’ll start to understand just how awful it is for us to hear “I look fat” coming out of a girl’s mouth, especially a girl we really like or, worse, love. Take it from my friend Adam, 34: “When a girl says she looks fat, all I think is, how can I get

love & lust out of this conversation as quickly as possible? She’s either fishing for compliments, she doesn’t like herself, or she actually has gained weight, in which case I think, so what? Do something about it, or stop worrying and be comfortable with yourself the way you are,” he says. “Whatever the reason, I’m basically like, please, make this stop.” Now, I’m not a woman, but I’m guessing ‘Please, make this stop’ isn’t the reaction most girls are hoping for when talking to a guy. Yet that’s where our brains go when we hear those three words. Here’s why.

‘Hon, do you think my lips are too big?’

When You Say “I Look Fat”, We Feel Helpless Once we hear that, we know that no matter how many times we tell you how hot you look, you won’t believe us. You’ve already crossed over to the dark side of deep insecurity and you’re too far gone. Guys hate feeling helpless, but you already know that from that time we tried to assemble your bookshelf.

It’s a Guaranteed Killer of Good Times “As soon as a girl says those words, the night’s ruined,” says my friend Will, 39. “She’s already feeling down on herself and in a bad mood. It’s a drag.” It’s also totally pointless. “It’s basically like saying you look ugly,” says Sid, 25. “Of course, we’re not going to agree. If we did, we’d never hear the end of it.”

You’re Planting a Seed of Doubt In Our Minds Your guy knows you’re not fat. He can see you’re not fat. But the more you say you’re fat, the more he’ll start to question the evidence. I once dated a really pretty girl who

&'- 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

was convinced she was overweight. Saying “I look fat” connects you and fat in a guy’s mind. And once that connection has been made, it’s tough to shake.

You’re Making Us Feel Insecure, Too! I get it—there’s an incredible amount of pressure on women to look perfect. But it’s easy to forget guys feel some of this pressure too.

“When a girl says she looks fat,” my friend Afshin, 24, tells me, “First I’m like, seriously? Then I think, wait a minute...is she? Followed by, crap, now I feel fat. I should probably hit the gym tomorrow.” So please, the next time the urge to say those three little words hits, fight it. If you think you look fat, chances are, you really don’t. And even if you have gained a few extra pounds, the guy you’re with probably doesn’t care. So take it Q from a guy: don’t mention it.

Are You Your Best Friend’s Worst Enemy? By Amber J. Adams

A

fter years of friendship, you’d probably say that you tell your BFF everything. She knows all about your crush on hot neighbour guy and that time you called in sick

&() 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

She was upset they hadn’t found matching hats

to sneak in some retail therapy. But when it comes to giving her your honest feedback on her relationship mishaps or pointing out her cringe-worthy office habits, you’ve probably told her what you thought she wanted to hear, just to spare her feelings. Sidestepping the truth with friends is a natural instinct. “Women have been taught to do what it takes to keep the peace in their friendships rather than to be completely honest,” says Ellen

Connell, Psy.D., a relationship therapist in San Diego. And if you’ve ever given your honest opinion to a friend only to have it backfire, it can be scary to go there again. Mandira, 30, learned the hard way that friends don’t always value the truth, even when they ask for it. “My former best friend stopped speaking to me for three years when I told her she was making a mistake by dating a guy old enough to be her dad,” she says. Another time,

G:7:886 =6C9A:G$<:IIN>B6<:H#8DB

When a friend asks for your honest advice, the last thing you want to do is hurt her with the truth. But when your keeping mum is holding her back, it’s time for you to get real.

you, you, you Mandira suggested a friend try on a bigger size during a shopping trip. “I was trying to help her look great, but she and my other friends told me I was being mean and judgmental.” It’s tempting to tell little white lies when we’re afraid the truth might bring on drama, but despite our good intentions, fibbing

to your friends can be the opposite of helpful, says Dan Ariely, Ph.D., author of The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty. Telling your bestie that you think her ‘famous’ roasted chicken tastes like cardboard is a secret you can keep. But here are some scenarios where a healthy dose of reality can be a good thing...

BE HONEST WHEN...

She’s bringing down your friendship with all her drama.

BE HONEST WHEN...

Her over-the-top outfits are attracting the wrong attention. You love going shopping with her, but she insists on buying every cleavage-baring top she can find. She’s a gorgeous girl, but her face isn’t what’s making people stare. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT

Tell her that you’ve noticed she’s been unhappy about the same situation for a while, says Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., author of The Friendship Fix. Then say, “Let’s find another way to deal with this because sitting here talking about it doesn’t seem to be helping.” You’ll be pushing her to be proactive and take concrete steps to change her situation, which is exactly what she needs.

Focus your conversation on the potential for embarrassing situations, rather than zeroing in on her outfit, says Bonior. If she dresses too sexy for work, say, “I think that outfit looks great on you, but I wonder if some old-school co-worker might think it’s not right for work.” Then spin your next shopping trip as a wardrobe upgrade for both of you. It’ll help you get your point across.

BE HONEST WHEN...

BE HONEST WHEN...

BE HONEST WHEN...

You’re afraid her risky sex habits will come back to haunt her.

She wants honest feedback about her relationship.

She’s not getting promoted at work.

You’re her shoulder to lean on. That’s what friends are for, right? But her venting sessions are starting to give you déjà vu! She complains about the same issues, yet she never takes your advice. You want to be there for her, but listening to her sob stories is starting to kill your goodwill. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT

You love hearing about her latest boy adventures, but you know for a fact that it’s been a while since condoms were a part of her sex routine. You don’t want her to get pregnant or contract an STD, but you’re scared she’ll think you’re being judge-y if you bring it up. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT

The risk of sounding judgmental rather than helpful is super high when it comes to talking to a friend about sex. Address your concerns by making them specific to one behaviour, rather than a criticism of her as a person, says Bonior. And lighten the mood by using humour. Say, “I get worried when you tell me you’re not using protection. I really hope you’ll consider it because I don’t want you to end up pregnant or with an STD. What do you think?”

&(+ 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

Telling a friend that you think her boyfriend is wrong for her or admitting that you doubt the guy she met will call is hard to do, but your BFF is begging you to be honest.. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT

In a situation this tricky, preparation is key, says Bonior. “Don’t stage a mini intervention about her dating habits or criticise her without having advice in mind for how she can make some changes,” she says. Start the conversation by reminding her about all the times she’s given you great guy advice. Then lead her to develop her own answers by asking questions, says Connell. Ask her, “Why do you think he’s not calling?” Or “Do you think deep down that he’s really right for you?” She’ll be more likely to see the situation clearly if she feels like she came up with her own answers.

Your BFF loves her job, and she thinks she’s pretty good at it. But she’s been stuck in the same cube for years! She’s clueless why she gets overlooked for promotions, but you think her habit of hitting the snooze button could be what’s causing her the professional shaft. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT

The next time she tells you she’s feeling under-appreciated, conveniently mention some career advice you’ve heard that you think could help her out, says Bonior. Say, “You know, I read something recently about how managers are less likely to take employees seriously when they come in late. I know my boss keeps tabs on when everyone comes into the office in the morning. Do you think your boss is a stickler about that stuff?” Then help her brainstorm ways that she can get to the next level. Q

few months ago, Mana Davodi, 32, was arrested for ‘disturbing moral values’. Her crime? Having painted toenails and not wearing socks. “I felt awful and panicked, filled with anger,” she said in an interview with UK-based magazine, Look. “It’s harassment of an individual’s freedom and beliefs.” Mana’s shocking story is hardly

During the reign of WesternWEAR.

In Iran, attracting attention to yourself is frowned upon by authorities

backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, women could pretty much wear whatever they liked (including swimsuits and short dresses). But after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, wearing the hijab (headscarf) became compulsory for Iranian women. Wearing boots with short pants, 6EG>A '%&( 8DHBDEDA>I6C &(,

only in cosmo hats or scarves which do not fully cover hair and neck, and putting on unusual make-up that contradicts public chastity became forbidden. Islamic religious establishments consider make-up to be contrary to hijab, which is in place so women are not viewed as sex objects. In December 2009, women were banned from wearing make-up on TV. Ezzatollah Zarghami, the media corporation in charge of controlling Iranian television broadcasting, was quoted by newspapers as saying that “make-up by women during television programmes is illegal and against Islamic sharia law. There should not be a single case of a woman wearing make-up during a programme.” The Basij target and roam places like malls, where they’re on a look out for women wearing too much make-up, bright clothes, trousers, short coats, or hijabs that don’t cover their hair completely. These women are then taken away, questioned, fined or even sentenced to prison upto two months. In an interview with washingtonpost.com, 30-yearold Sahar said, “I felt disrespected and insulted. I’m a grown woman. I can decide what I can wear. I can make these decisions myself.” Sahar was arrested for wearing sleeves that went only to her forearms and didn’t cover her arms properly. Others have been arrested—and beaten—for not wearing socks or letting their hair show from under their scarf. Things get worse in summer (when women are more likely to falter), and thousands of ‘moral police officers’ are employed to roam the streets and arrest those wearing ‘un-Islamic dress’. According to Tehran’s state media report, last year “53 coffee shops and 87 restaurants were shut down in Tehran for serving customers with improper hijab or for other gender-related offenses, such as permitting women to smoke hookah pipes.” The report said: “Nearly 80 stands at an international food fair were closed in June 2012

Iran has also been named among the leading ‘nose-job capitals’ in the world. Experts say these trends may have to do with Iran’s rich Persian culture and emphasis on beauty, art, and aesthetics. Can Your Name Change Your Life? Apparently, yes! It turns out, your name could help determine the person you become eventually. Here’s the lowdown on the name changing game... By Meher Bajwa

G

oogle Inc.’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt once predicted that in the future, people around the world will change their names to escape the embarrassing things they did online in the past. While we’re not so sure that’s the only reason, but over the years, a number of celebrities have changed their given names in search of stardom and success. Could you ever imagine a Norma Jean Baker as a legendary Hollywood siren who eventually turned into a sex symbol in the 1950s? Us neither. Maybe that’s why Marilyn Monroe decided to change her birth name when she started her career on stage. And you can’t really fault us for thinking the ‘Lizzie Grant Bag’ wouldn’t have caught Mulberry’s fancy as much as the ‘Lana Del Rey Bag’. The singer found mega success once she changed her name from Lizze Grant to her more vintage pseudonym. Psychologist Emma Kenny tells Cosmo Australia, “80 percent of our success comes from the way we are perceived by the people around us—and your name plays a major role.” Names are more important now than ever before, with people like bloggers creating brands for themselves and, cut-throat competition in the job market. There’s a shift towards more unique names, and unusual spellings that could better reflect personality, creativity, and ideals. Could it be time for a re-brand?

The Celeb Factor

The information carried by names, what experts are calling ‘name entropy’, has increased as much in the past 25 years as it did in the entire century before that. Names are often linked to stereotypes, for example, job recruiters at a company will unconsciously prefer a ‘Kareena’ or a ‘Deepika’. This unfortunately makes life tough for the Rakhis and the Yanas, whose names are associated with fallen celebrities. Cheryl Cole Then there’s the bunch of new generation stars who seem to have success written in their

Dakota Fanning

names from the beginning, like Miley Cyrus, whose first name is Destiny, and Emily Sande, whose first name is Adele.

Build Your Brand

Studies have found that names that roll off the tongue like Leona Lewis or Cheryl Cole tend to have more positive sentiments associated with them. It’s no wonder Katrina Turquotte changed her name to Katrina Kaif before stepping into Bollywood. A lot of people are also using their middle names as their first names— like the Fanning sisters, Dakota’s first name is Hannah and Elle’s is Mary. They just don’t Deepika sound as glamorous, do they? Padukone When Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin named their daughter Apple Martin, we weren’t the only ones wondering what they were thinking(?!). But today, eight-year-old Apple Martin is a brand linked to two mega successful parents. Then there’s the case of the mono-named ladies (we’re talking to you Beyoncé and Rihanna), which makes you believe when you’re successful enough, you can get by with just one name!

Unusual Works!

Alexa Chung’s and supermodel Agyness Deyn’s (who’s real name is Laura Hollins) success proves that unique names are the order of the day. Such names spark interest in the person’s personality, and also help build anticipation about meeting them. Lesson learned: the more exclusive your name is, the more positive reactions you Q can expect.

Ask Cosmo Anything From random little issues to major life dramas, we’ve got your back. I’m single and am out all the time having fun. She’s my oldest friend and I don’t want to lose her, but I’m getting tired of all this. A: The real issue between you and your friend is one she’s unlikely to admit, especially to herself. You and other childhood friends are building a future and moving forward, whereas she probably feels left behind. Her distancing tactics—the scheduled appointments, even the needy boyfriend—are all to make her appear important and fulfilled, both in her own eyes and yours. What can you do? Not much. Some friendships come to a natural conclusion. And some of them start up again in the future. So stay cool, respect her feelings—and if you care about her at all, keep the door open on your side.

Q: I’ve been binge-eating since I was 12 and I’m now 21. I don’t know how to stop—when I feel down I comfort-eat. I feel totally out of control. I’m too scared even to weigh myself. A: You said it yourself: you’re “out of control”. But not of your diet—of your life. Obesity suggests deeper issues of choice and control, especially today, with the multitude of opportunities modern life offers. It’s time to discover and become yourself. First, find an online support group like Overeaters Anonymous, who’ll help you with the weight issue and offer you understanding companions. But even more important, look honestly within and discover what desires or ambitions you’ve built this weighty defence to hide from. Then, follow the bright stars. Seek

any help you need. But go for it! Slimming will be only one of the achievements in your future, and not the greatest one, either.

Q: My boyfriend of two years broke up with me six months ago, but he still texts every day to say things like “I really miss you” and “I feel like I’m going to regret ending our relationship”. I don’t understand. A: He’s using you as an emotional booty call—he wants to be reassured that you’re still into him without having to commit to getting back together. What he says may be true to an extent, but this effed-up dynamic only benefits him by making it more difficult for you to date other guys, which means your ex doesn’t need to truly deal with the fact that your relationship is over. Whether he realises it or not, he’s acting selfish and playing games. He hasn’t found anyone else, and when he does, he’ll stop calling. Tell him that you need space and you don’t want to talk for a while. Then do what he doesn’t want you to do—move on, and don’t get caught in this cycle.

Q: I love the fit of a great pencil skirt. But I feel I’ve gotten stuck in a rut with my classic black and navy pieces. How can I mix things up? A: You’re absolutely on track with your attraction to pencil skirts—they’re so flattering! You’ll find yourself with fashion gold if you change things up by picking up trendy patterns (think flora and fauna) or clashing prints (geometric meets graphic). It’s unbelievably easy to make the skirt the mainstay of your look by opting for interesting, fashion-friendly detailing. And when in doubt, always go for solid brights. Q

You may have convinced yourself that your attachment to him is a sign of maturity, but the truth is, if you’re still sleeping in his boxers or trying to make him jealous, you’re not quite over him. “Some women don’t allow themselves the opportunity to feel sad that the relationship ended,” says Debora Phillips, author of How To Fall Out Of Love. “Before you can go forward, you need to grieve.” Do whatever it takes to put the past to rest. Could You TWEET What You Eat? Experts agree that keeping a Flash Food Diary can help you eat healthier. So we challenged food blogger and writer Anisha Bangera to keep a food diary on Twitter for a week to see what happens. By Priyam Chaturvedi

Food satisfies me. When I’m having a bad day, I look forward to a good meal to calm me down...I even find cooking and eating therapeutic. Luckily, I am blessed with good genes, which means no matter how much I indulge, it doesn’t show (yay!). So when Cosmo asked me to maintain a food diary on Twitter for a week, I said yes, excited about the challenge!

DAY 1

I made myself a bowl. While working, I felt like munching on something salty, so I grabbed a packet of salted almonds and ate a handful around noon (wrong move!). Lunch consisted of eggs, bacon and a whole lot of butter. It was quite filling, which meant no evening snacks! But I was starving by dinner, so my boyfriend

and I went out and I gobbled down a roast beef sandwich.

“When I’m having a bad day, I look forward to a good meal to calm me down.”

MONDAY

Being a freelancer means I get to stay home all day. It also means that I have more access to food. I woke up late and wandered into the kitchen looking for breakfast. Muesli and juice was easily available, so

DAY 2

TUESDAY

I woke up early today as I had some work to finish before lunch. So breakfast was a quick glass of chocolate milk and a banana. Yesterday’s salty meals had left me thirsty, so I kept

chugging cold water all day. Lunch was a quick egg fried rice made with leftover rice and lots of veggies. Thinking that I’m maintaining a picture food diary, I snacked on some puffed rice and cranberry juice (which has recently become a favourite!) in the evening, instead of my usual pack of biscuits. I decided to hit the gym for some time, and craved something healthy post my workout. Thus, the day ended with a salad and some (more!) cranberry juice.

body love I was famished, so I dragged my boyfriend to a restaurant and ate stuffed crabs, butter chicken, naan, fried bombil, and garlic prawns!

“The camera reminded me that I’d skipped breakfast!” DAY 3

DAY 5

WEDNESDAY

Today was a messed-up day. The camera reminded me that I’d skipped breakfast, and I felt terrible. I started my day (rather noon) with some juice and added about 30ml of vodka to it. Yes, vodka! I followed that with 12 pieces of KFC hot wings for lunch. I kept craving something salty all day, so I ate a whole jar of green olives! But that wasn’t all. I went for an event in the evening where I had a beer. For dinner, I went to Blue Frog and ate a tenderloin steak with bone marrow, mash and grilled vegetables. Yum!

DAY 4

FRIDAY

THURSDAY

whole-wheat toast. In the evening, I enjoyed some paani puri. I was too full for dinner, but went out with friends where I helped myself to bites from their food.

DAY 7

Last night’s heavy dinner meant breakfast was just a bowl of papaya. We decided to barbecue today at my BF’s lake house in Pavna. On our way, we stopped at McDonald’s for burgers and nuggets. Once there, we grilled lamb, chicken and paneer which I ate with pita bread. For dinner, I had a grilled cheese sandwich and some Nutella on toast. I love Nutella!

DAY 6

SUNDAY

I decided to stay home and sip on green tea and juices all day. I wanted to sweeten it so instead of using sugar, I used honey. I had a lot of cooking to do for my blog so I completely forgot about eating. I just kept having juice and tea. Finally, at 4pm I made a baked dish with mushrooms and tomatoes. In the evening, we went to KFC where I ate those damn hot wings again. I just can’t help myself from eating them! Dinner was nutella and bananas on whole-wheat toast!”

SATURDAY

I was too tired to get out of bed, so woke up just in time for lunch. I refrained from ordering a bucket of chicken wings, and instead made a tomato olive compote with some Messy day 2—I skipped breakfast again. I went for a swim with friends at noon and chilled by the pool with some beer and peanuts. We came back around 5, only to rush to watch a friend perform at Blue Frog. I had a few drinks there and ate a portion of fries.

&+% 8DHBDEDA>I6C 6EG>A '%&(

My Report Card “I went through my pictures and realised that I skip a lot of meals, which means my next one is extra heavy. Also, I eat really salty food. Salted almonds, olives, KFC wings, etc. I also think I’m a bit of an emotional eater. I don’t sit with a tub of ice cream when I’m sad, but I want good food like stuffed crabs now and then. But now I know where I’m going wrong and what I should do make my diet healthier!”

The Space Between A decade after getting a perfect smile, Sarah Z. Wexler asked her dentist to reverse the procedure—and give back her unique gap.

Anna Paquin

Georgia May Jagger

In high school, I was self-conscious about my frizzy hair, my strong nose...and the sizable gap between my front teeth. I pleaded with my parents to have it bonded—and around my 16th birthday, they gave me the money so I could see my dentist. Sameness was the ideal then, and I’d made myself look less like an outlier. Fast-forward to today, when I’m an adult who’s a whole lot happier with who I am and how I look. So when my dentist told me that my bonding needed to be redone, I blurted out something drastic: “What if we just take it out and don’t put anything back?” He told me to think it over. The recent gap-tooth movement didn’t hurt either. Following the footsteps of an ’80s Madonna, many fashion models and stars are making imperfect

Wexler’s natural gap is similar to Paquin’s, but she settled on a Kat Dennings baby gap—something that more closely smiles cool. But a thought my doc held up a resembles kept plaguing me: what mirror, I gasped! Dennings’. if I wasn’t pretty enough to balance out the imperfection? Then I came across an interview with NFL star Michael Strahan. When asked about his trademark gap, he said, “There’s so much pressure to be perfect. But I’m not perfect.” Well said, Michael—neither am I. I made my follow-up appointment. The procedure was easy but when

The gap was huge. “Three millimeters,” he said. I kept staring, trying to be okay with the change, but I felt anxious and insecure. Up until then, I had romanticised the way my teenage gap would look on my adult face... and, well, the real thing looked nothing like a supermodel’s. Sensing my hesitance, the dentist suggested adding some slight bonding to reduce the gap to one mm. I agreed, and 10 minutes later, I saw a reflection that was still imperfect but more aesthetically pleasing. I don’t know if I’ll ever embrace my full gap (the same way I may never fully retire my flat iron), but my new smile is different enough—and for now, Q I’m okay with that.

Help! I’m Feeling So Bloated! Having a bad ab day? Shape up your belly and your attitude, no Spanx required. You went to sleep skinny. So why does it feel like you gained 5 kilos overnight? “Your weight can change anywhere from 0.5 to 3 kgs in a day due to hormone fluctuations, what you eat, and water retention,” says Melinda Jampolis, MD, a physician in LA. If you’re bloated all the time, see a doctor—if it’s just once in a while... well, that’s what we’re here for. STEP 1

Use Instagram “Pull up a favourite pic of yourself on your phone, and look at it during the day,” suggests Ashley Solomon, a psychologist in Chicago. You may feel more preggo than hot chick right now, but the image reminds you how you felt in that moment. Warm fuzzies may ensue.

You may feel like curling up in a fetal position and avoiding all human contact until, say, the week after your period. rich fruits and veggies—think grapes, cucumber—will help flush out excess fluid, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, an RD in Chicago. Or try pineapple: it’s high in bromelain, a digestive enzyme that helps break down food.

Sounds weird, but stay with us: applying gentle pressure to your belly can push out gas and help get things going if your bloat is caused by constipation. Lie down on your bed, and slowly rub your tummy with both hands counterclockwise. Nice, no?

Water is tops, but drink it about 20 minutes before or after your meal, not while you’re actually eating. “Otherwise, you may dilute your stomach enzymes, which can disrupt digestion,” Blatner says.

They tilt your pelvis and rotate your hips, pulling in your belly. Plus, science proves stilettos are sexy: men and women rated ladies in heels as more attractive than women in flats, says a new research. But you probably already knew that.

To stop obsessing over your pooch, focus elsewhere—paint your nails with some crackle polish, maybe. And from the so-crazy-it-might-work files: a recent study found people perceived a woman wearing a spicy-floral fragrance as 5 kilos thinner than when she went perfume-free or had on another scent.

role of the fashion industry in the portrayal of the ideal male body. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in January this year found that eating disorders which were once considered the domain of young, teenage girls, are increasingly affecting males too. It indicated that 10 to 15 percent of people who suffer from anorexia or bulimia are male. And despite this huge shift in demographics, the study found that treatment for male eating disorders is difficult to come by because of the subconcsious bias that eating disorders are ‘girl problems’. In fact, in most cases, the disease might not even be the first thing, or the second thing that comes to the doctor’s mind while diagnosing, says Merryl Bear, director of the Canadian National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC), in an interview with The Epoch Times. Also, figures from the National Health Service in England show a 66% increase in hospital admissions for male eating disorders over the last decade. Medical experts believe this surge is due to an obsession with looking a certain way that involves stereotypical bulging biceps and six-pack abs. Sufferers become obsessed with their weight and start exercising and cutting down on calories in a drastic manner. The enormous pressures on men these days to maintain the perfect figure rival those which continue to affect women. Clearly, weight is Q a problem haunting both sexes!

LOOK TALLER... The trick here is to add vertical stripes wherever you can—they’re the best you can do to add an illusion of length to your frame. Look out for snug fits, too (cue skinny jeans) as they emphasize the lines of your body, making you look taller. And don’t forget to slip into those killer 6-inch heels!

LOOK HOTTER IN

120 Seconds Take your look from ho-hum to hubba bubba! Just add two extra minutes to your beauty routine for a hot, new look! By Vasudha Rai

ADD DIMENSION TO YOUR FACE Craving cheekbones (who isn’t)? Make your face more chiselled in an instant with cream concealor that’s a shade darker than the one you wear. Tap some on the tip of your forefinger and thumb and use them to pinch the sides of your nose, and to trace your cheekbones. Blend harsh lines and dust blush on the apples of your cheeks to get 3-D colour.

MAKE YOUR EYES LOOK MASSIVE Fact: white eye pencil can look jarring against sleepy, red-rimmed eyes. Instead, try this visual deception trick: pick a nude pencil and line the inner waterline and the outer tear duct of your eyes. The nude shade matches the natural colour of skin and makes your peepers look bigger, brighter and fresher in an instant.

Beauty is all about symmetry. Whether you have big, voluminous lips or a tiny rosebud mouth, both look best when they’re perfectly proportioned. Keep in mind that the M.A.C Fashion Sets Lipglass, in Ablaze, `990

PERFECT YOUR POUT

beauty upper and lower lips must be almost equal sized. To achieve, draw and fill in with a lip pencil, going just a millimetre outside the natural lip line and not more. Top up with gloss in the same shade for lips that are incredibly perfect.

FIX THOSE BROWS Spending a few extra seconds on your brows is worth it—wellgroomed brows make your eyes and face look sharper! Whatever your brow shape (keep it as close to natural), it’s the length that matters. The front of the brow should be in the centre of your nostril; the end should be no more than 45 degrees from the outer edge of your eye. Don’t have that? Just use a brow powder and wax to fix (once you figure out the measurements, it won’t even take a minute)!

CREATE VOLUME Yesterday’s blowout not looking so fresh today? We feel your pain! To fix in an instant, dust a bit of baby powder on your roots to absorb any grease, then gently backcomb the hair on your crown.

hips, waist and upper back are aligned and your chin is parallel to the floor.

GET SEXY SKIN Sure, you love your trusty body lotion, but if you want truly sleek legs (in seconds!), turn to body oil. The blinding shine on oily, glossy limbs camouflages cellulite Revlon and makes your look leaner, PhotoReady and more toned. Extra Concealer, points if you add a pinch `760 of gold dust or bronzing powder, or just use one with built-in shimmer.

FIX YOUR STAND Slouching brings your shoulders forward, pops your stomach out and makes your hips look wider. By simply standing straight, you can make your stomach look flatter, waist thinner and boobs bigger! Ensure that your

EVEN OUT YOUR SKIN TONE Even if you do nothing else, having even skin can make you L’Oréal look polished and put together. Paris Pay attention to redness and Color blend a light-reflecting concealor Riche Le Kohl, around the inner corners of your `375 eyes, the sides of your nose and around your mouth.

ADD INSTANT SMOKE For a super-quick smokey eye, swap eyeshadows for pencil and crayon. Use a dark kohl pencil to draw a thick line on lids (don’t worry, it needn’t be even), then use your finger to smudge the colour upwards and outwards. Go over the area with a Q-tip to clean any excess colour, and Q instant smoke is yours!

Pssst...These are Our Beauty Confessions! We took to the streets and asked real girls to admit their biggest hair and make-up thoughts! They agreed to do it, anonymity intact!

When I apply powder foundation over my moisturiser, it gets cakey (and looks terrible).

A. Wait for five minutes for cream to absorb totally before using powder. (Start your eye make-up in the meantime.)

The last time I wore orange lipstick to work, people kept staring at me, making me extremely conscious. A. For a work-friendly hint of colour, try gel-based lipstick (like Inglot Gel Lipstick No. 278, `550).

No matter how much cream I apply, my skin is always dry post a hot shower!

A. Use an oil-based body wash. It locks in your natural lipids, preventing hot water from sucking skin dry.

Kérastase Elixir K Ultime Sublime Cleansing Oil Shampoo, `1,500

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer, `1,650

I have really bad acne, and every cover-up I try further worsens it! A. Use an oil-free concealer that doesn’t feel cakey. Instead of rubbing it in the skin, gently pat it on.

A blow-dry makes my hair looks stringy, not straight!

L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil, `1,350

I tried a new hair colour, but it came out three shades too dark. I now look like an alien! A. Use a clarifying shampoo every other wash. It contains more detergent than traditional formulas, which helps remove excess pigment.

JLaw: Our (New) Fave Girl-Next-Door!

2012 She chose a daring Prabal Gurung number for The Hunger Games premiere.

We caught up with the author of the grossly successful Shiva Trilogy, Amish Tripathi while he was in Delhi, recently. Cosmo: Did you ever imagine your books would be this successful? Amish Tripathi: “I didn’t even image my books would get published! I’m way out of my league in that sense.” C: Why did you decide to tell Shiva’s story? AT: “It began as a pure philosophical thesis that somehow emerged as an adventure for me. I’m a voracious reader and I’d never written fiction before Immortals. You could say I’ve done about 30 years of research to write these books.” C: Can we expect a movie adaptation soon? AT: “Yes! In fact Karan Johar has just acquired the Indian language rights of the book and they’re working on the script as we speak.” C: The one book that changed your life... AT: “I used to read a lot of Ayn Rand when I was in college and that had a big impact on me back then. But as I’ve grown older, I find her philosophies a little ruthless.”

2013 She worked this Dior Haute Couture number at the Golden Globes, and picked up an award too!

2011

2008 She was drowning in this silk gown at the Venice Film Festival but people noticed her.

She had made her mark at the Oscars in this classic Calvin Klein gown. She received her first nomination for Winter’s Bone that year. 7n B:=:G 76?L6
