COMBINATION OF GEOMETRY AND NATURE
Modern Urban Plaza Design
TYPE: Graduation work DATE: 05/11-06/11 TUTOR: Cui Liu SITE: Taihu Resort District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province This project is located in the Taihu Resort District, Zhejiang province. The purpose of this design is to create a open space for tourists and native residents. It is a urban plaza related to the XiLaiDeng hotel, which is a modern hotel waiting to be completed. With the basic geometric way to design this plaza, it combines with nature and adds new type of scenery here in the resort district.

As the site photos show, the environment here is mainly farmland and ponds.
Taihu Lake
This urban plaza is surrounded by resort district, vila area commercial area and the XiLaiDeng hotel. All of these give it a role to be a modern, open space for native residents and tourists.
These districts are going to be commercial center and the fast-development areas which around the site.
Different from the original natural resort, this design uses geometic style to create the plaza, making fresh and beautiful scenery.

Green Transformation Renovation of Industry Factory TYPE: Competition DATE: 07/11 SITE: Beijing Ertong Factory CBD - the Central Business District is a symbol of development in Beijing whereas it also brings many problems in the area of environment, traffic and so forth. The industrial district is another part of city development. How to use the resouces of industrial district to improve the quality of city space? The purpose of this design is to find a way that make the disused Ertong Factory transforms to a new place. Ease the population concentration, control the disorder of city extension and promote fresh estate. Meanwhile, the reservation of this factory will do good to keep the whole history of people’s life.

According to the environment and conditions of different parts of the park, we are about to choose the appropriate places to be the site for stages, theme plazas, drinks supply, snacks street and market.

The purpose of this design is to plan the site in a more rational way and at the same time, finding ways to make the park more likely to be a theme park during the music festival.

Beijing Tongzhou Canal Park is a beautiful public park. The Strawberry Music Festival will be hold here in May every year. But every time the arrangement of stages or other basic facilities is not so satisfied. Meanwhile the music theme of the park is not obvious enough.

Distance between the two adjacent stages is too close that people will hear confused sounds from different stages.
The long distance between two stages is not convenient for people to go to another stage from the previous one.
In terms of the two factors we’ve talked before and conditions of the site, this is a nice way to arrange all the stages.

The three plazas are playing a role to infuse the theme of Strawberry Music Festival into this park. Except the stages, people still have other places to enjoy their time.
The ART Plaza The Art Plaza is located in an elliptical ground with a path for people pass through.Along the path, there are two parts of the plaza. One is talking about the cubic space and the other one is mainly about curves. In this Art Plaza, people will taste the art of painting, space creating in the music park. That would be a special feeling for them and they would love the music festival more!

The MUSIC Plaza
The STRAWBERRY Town
The artists can sing and dance on the stage, but how about us? The Music Plaza is a place for people to play music. Guitar, Bass, Cajon, Drum, Keyboard are all placing here for people to play. You can also bring your instrument here to have fun. Different height of pillars can create a feel that the space is flowing just like music.As time goes by, the shadows of those pillars are changing too, which make here more interesting and beautiful. The rectangles are ornaments on the grass or benches for people to sit on.
This Strawberry town is a open space for people to take a rest, have fun, enjoy their time during the music festival. The town is planned based on the shape and color of strawberry. When people stepping into this ground, they will feel themselves standing in a different world from the outside and totally relaxing.

The red and while circles, rings on the ground are made of plastic while the red balls are rubber ball. Those circles or rings have varied height, someof them are for stepped and some of them are for sit on.The red rubber balls are randomly placed on the grass, with which people are free to play. master plan

Temporary Installation for Stage These temporary installations for stage are going to be the symbol of the stage, meanwhile they are the other way to highlight the Theme in the park.
The LOVE Stage

The music style of LOVE stage is close to love songs either of popular music or rock music. Use red, plastic ornament as shape of heart to express the meaning of love and make millions of the hearts, creating a special ceiling over the space which in front of the stage.

After the music festival, they would be the souvenirs of this music festival. People can buy them due to their need.
The OVERDRIVE Stage After the music festival, the whole one could be used in a theme park or a plaza as the ornament on the ground. Or, the seperated stripes and rectangles can be used as stickers to ornamentpeople’s house, cars, and wherever you can imagine.

The music style of OVERDRIVE Stage is close to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. The atmosphere is full of energy and youth. With the inspiration from sound wave, I’m about to make the space in front of the stage being a small musical, energetic world. Different shapes of stripes and rectangles with varied fresh colors, are the extension from the stage. It is a meaning that the power of music is transmitting to all the people here.

STRAWBERRY Stage is the largest stage in this music festival. The music style here is multiple and the artists here are more popular than any other stages. There is a huge amount of people coming to this stage to enjoy the performance. According to the topography of this site, the shape of this facility is streamline just like the drop going from the higher place to the lower. This is a sign that the Strawberry Stage is the center and people are eager to come here.
But as the huge amount of people coming here, the unavoidable problem is that the lawn maybe polluted by kinds of garbage. There is not enough dustbins and not all the people are supposed to bring a garbage bag. In order to solve this problem, this red facility contains a small garbage can in it. After the music festival, this facility could just stay in the park as the new series of dustbins of this park.

OPEN THE SPACE Riverside Park Design TYPE: LA Studio DATE: 09/2010 TUTOR: CAO Likun SITE: Qinghe, Haidian District, Beijing The surroundings of this site are residential quarters and commercial areas. In order to use the space along the Qinghe river, making this place a open park for people, I used different grades to creat the riverside space. Dispite the riverside space, there are plazas, gardens in this park too. People here could relax and have a good time.

The Rainwater Garden In order to keep the park clean, the rainwater garden will collect the surface runoff and rainwater. This makes a beautiful scenery here with varied plants in the park, which is a ecological way to protect the environment.
