In 1968, driven by a desire to serve in the mission field, Fr Varkey joined the Prefecture Apostolic of Jammu & Kashmir, which was then under the Mill Hill Fathers. Fr Varkey’s ministry began at a significant moment for the mission, as the Mill Hill Fathers were in the process of handing over the Prefecture to the Indian Capuchins. This allowed him the unique opportunity to work closely with both groups during the transition His first assignment was at BC Road, Jammu where he served under Fr Wilfred Mubarak OFM Cap. Fr. Varkey focused on pastoral care, serving Catholic communities in places like Reshamghar,

During Msgr. Hippolytus’ leadership from 1978, the mission witnessed growth and development, with new mission stations being established One of Fr Varkey’s early achievements was the foundation of the R.S. Pura mission station in 1980. Three years later, he took charge of the Bishnah mission, extending his pastoral reach to Vijaypur, Samba, Nagri, Kathua, and Hiranagar To strengthen his role as an educator, Fr Varkey pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.) from M.E.T. CALLED AND CHOSEN

REV. FR. JOSEPH KOOVACKAL

The Life and Mission of ReV. Fr. JOSEPH KOOVACKAL

Rev Fr Joseph Koovackal, a dedicated missionary priest, was born on 27th February 1946 into the Koovackal family near Kottayam, Kerala. His early life was shaped by the loss of both parents, and he was lovingly raised by his maternal relatives Despite these challenges, Fr Joseph pursued his education in schools near his home and felt a profound call to serve God as a priest.

In 1964, as a young man, Fr. Joseph felt the stirring of a divine call to serve as a priest and joined the Diocese of Ooty He underwent his major seminary formation at Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamalai in Tamil Nadu, where he completed his studies in Philosophy and Theology On 3rd February 1975, he was ordained to the priesthood at Sathyamangalam where Christianity was founded by St. John de Britto, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to serving the Church

Fr Joseph’s initial assignment as Assistant Parish Priest in Coonoor, Nilgiris, revealed his passion for pastoral care and community-building He played a significant role in establishing missions and constructing churches in the parishes he served His leadership skills led to his appointment as Vicar Forane of Gudalur and as a member of the diocesan council, where he continued his evangelizing mission

A defining moment came in 1989, when Fr Joseph felt a call to the missions in Jammu & Kashmir after meeting Bishop Hippolytus Kunnumkal of Jammu-Srinagar Moved by stories of the challenges faced by the Church in the region, he volunteered for the northern mission. In June 1989, he arrived in Jammu and was soon assigned to Akhnoor. From 1990 to 1994, he undertook various key roles, including that of Procurator and Parish Priest of the Cathedral

His evangelizing efforts led to the establishment of new mission stations in Billawar, Dansal, Manwal, Ramkot, and Basholi, and he oversaw the construction of a new church in Mandal

In 1994, the diocese sent him to Belgium to pursue a Master’s degree in Pastoral Theology, and upon his return in 1996, he took up residence at Maitri Bhawan, where he also oversaw the construction of St. Joseph’s Community Hospital. Two years later, he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of JammuSrinagar, further expanding his work to new mission areas

However, the extreme weather conditions in Jammu & Kashmir began to take a toll on Fr Joseph's health On the advice of his doctor, he sought a different path in 2004, leading him to join the Congregation of the Servants of Divine Providence. This decision opened up new avenues for his mission work, and he has since continued to serve various missions under the congregation His deep spirituality and prayerful life have also made him a source of wisdom and guidance for priests, seminarians, religious and the Christian community whom he supports through retreats and spiritual exercises.

Throughout his 50 years of priesthood, Fr Joseph Koovackal has left an indelible mark on the missions and communities he has served. His enduring spirit, rooted in faith and pastoral care, continues to inspire and uplift those around him

As we celebrate Fr Joseph’s golden jubilee, we honour a life dedicated to God’s work and a priest who has been a steadfast pillar of faith and service.
