FACULTY Sunil Saxena Dean Sunil Saxena has over three decades of experience in Print, New Media, Research and Journalism Education. He set up twelve websites in five languages for The New Indian Express Group, and was the first Dean of the Asian College of Journalism. His books on journalism are referred texts in almost all Indian universities. He is the founder and leader of IMII’s award winning mobile phone journalism project that has become India’s first mobile-based rural news service.
Todd Baer Academic Advisor Todd Baer is an award winning television and radio journalist. He most recently worked as a correspondent for Al Jazeera English (AJE) where he reported from across India including Kashmir. After covering the Mumbai attacks, AJE moved him to their headquarters in Doha, Qatar where he became a travelling correspondent. While working in the Middle East, Academic Advisor Todd Baer reporting from Srinagar. Baer covered the aftermath of the war in Gaza, the buildup of troops in Afghanistan and the Lebanese parliamentary election. He was then based out of AJE’s Washington news centre where he covered the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti and reported from Morocco.
Chris Conte Academic Advisor Chris Conte worked as a reporter and news editor at The Wall Street Journal for 15 years before joining the staff of Governing magazine as a correspondent. He has conducted research and written reports on health issues for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. Conte contributes articles to Congressional Quarterly, where he worked as a staff reporter covering economic issues, the federal budget, and banking in the late 1970s. For the past three years, Conte has been a Knight Health Journalism Fellow in Uganda.

IMII COURSE PLAN The heart of the programme is practical work. The students write, edit and produce television stories and produce newscasts that are broadcast on the IMII website. They also write news stories for the website and a newspaper published twice a week. The instruction includes the following topics plus other subject areas identified by IMII over the course of the school year:
TELEVISION Anchoring: How to anchor a live newscast, interact with correspondents and conduct interviews with guests Reporting: Live reporting, writing, storytelling, accuracy, and how to work under intense deadlines Video journalism:Composition, framing, lighting and how to tell stories using high-end digital cameras. Editing: Edit television stories on Macintosh Computers using Final Cut Pro. Rundown producing: Build a newscast, identify a lead story, tease an upcoming story, write anchor leads and use graphics in shows. Convergence: All students will learn each of the five concentrations so that when they graduate from the IMII, they will be ready to work in any job in television.
PRINT Reporting: Lead writing, story structuring, use of quotations, writing from press notes, covering press conferences, speech reporting, writing interpretive stories, profiles and feature stories. Editing: Basic copy editing, rewriting, headline writing, removing bias, use of attribution, news selection and display. Design: Principles of design, modular, non-modular lay-outs and making of newspaper pages using QuarkXpress.
NEw MEDIA web Reporting: Writing for the web, hyperlocal and glocal stories, handling a developing story. web Editing and Design: News selection, editing and display, content management, headline writing, principles of web design, navigation, web analytics and hyperlinking. Social Media: Blogging, developing content for Wikis, and monitoring of social media sites such as You Tube, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. Multimedia: Developing audio and video stories for publishing on the net. Mobile Journalism: Developing news alerts for transmission as SMS, MMS and voice calls.
ADVANCED REPORTING Specialised modules on Business, Health, Environment, Education, Entertainment, Defence, Science, Law and the Courts, Politics and Sports.
SPECIAL PROJECTS Students will do two projects of broadcast and publishable quality – one for the electronic and new media and the other for print media – as part of the course work. The focus of these projects will be: 1. Rural Development and Poverty Issues 2. Use of Right to Information Act to develop news reports
GUEST SPEAkER PROGRAMMES Subject specialists will deliver lectures on their areas of expertise to broaden the students’ knowledge and world view.
STUDENT-LED SESSIONS Students work in teams to identify media issues, research background content and lead discussions. These sessions build confidence, develop analytical skills and foster team spirit.
