Chairman, AEPC & IAM/ATDC
he Apparel Industry in India is rapidly integrating with the Global Supply Chain. The Global apparel industry has witnessed massive changes in the past decade with shift of the Western Production Centres to Asia and other regions. Asian economy has emerged as the main competitor for a lion share in the Global Apparel Market. There is also greater stress on skill development at every level. The Human resources form a major competitive strength of India and we need to leverage this to a great extent. The Institute of Apparel Management under the aegis of AEPC is an endeavour in this direction for shaping technically strong “junior to middle level” managerial cadre for both export and domestic apparel sectors. The institute has put in place a strong academic team led by some of the best talents in terms of Academic leadership and faculty resources apart from state-of-art infrastructure at the Apparel House Campus. The Institute offers both UG and PG programmes under International and Indian programmes. Strong Academic partnership with universities in UK and Canada, professional institutes in France & Italy, and the leading certifying body like Edexcel have helped in giving a flexible learning opportunity to the students opening up many avenues of growth. The institute has also ventured recently into ‘Professional Upgradation programmes’ so that the faculty comes in contact with industry issues on a regular basis by offering new inputs to the working executives who benefit in their career growth from such courses. Being an institute “by the industry, of the industry, for the industry”, it has the benefit of collective experience of the apparel export community and AEPC in particular and supporting associations like GEA, AEMA, TEA, CMAI etc. The students and faculty members constantly get opportunities to be part of live projects whether it is Source Zone, IIGF, TexTrends or global fairs and exhibitions etc. Thus our students have an edge in the market place being already “Industry-ready”. It’s a great honor that Hon’ble Minister of Textiles Dr. Kavuru Sambasiva Rao is launching “Kritika”, with Dr. Rao’s kind presence today, it is a big motivation for new students who are joining Academic Year 2013-14. We hope his blessings will go a long way in making our students “future leaders” of the industry.

Quilling ‘rainbow and earth’ redefined
T
hree students of IAM Kriti Biala, Irika Mehta and Suchi Smita of Fashion and Lifestyle Design second semester experimented on theme ‘rainbow and earth’ on quilling. Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork. This exercise helps students to develop a great sense of design quality into their future original work. “We prepared this dress based on the theme ‘rainbow and earth’. The seven colours of rainbow has been used extensively. And the skirt is in earth colour help neutralize the rainbow colours” said Kriti Biala. “Through this design we are trying to depict how the rain and sun together form the rainbow with the drop shaped quills made from paper in the shades of a rainbow. These droplets fall on the barren ground depicted by the black flower quills and the flowers bloom and grow in beautiful rainbow colours” added Irika Mehta. IAM students are trained under the able guidance of Mr. Snehasish Roy (Chief Coordinator, International Pathways) and Ms. Garima Vashist.

“Best out of Waste”, paper craft to recreate magic in garments
S
tudents of Fashion and Lifestyle Design explored “Best out of Waste” using paper craft called “quilling” which is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The use of quilling in garment designs imparted a sense of ability in students which helped them come out with their creativity in terms of expression and skill. Quilling was incorporated for the students of Fashion and Lifestyle design right from the foundation level by Mr. Snehashish Ray, Chief Coordinator, International Programs as a medium to explore the world of paper and come up with garments made of paper. The students learnt and made excellent designs for the garments using quilling under the guidance of Ms. Garima Vashisht, a faculty member at IAM. The exercises on quilling helped the students made them understand ‘paper as a medium’ and its 3d aspects. Initially they made small 3d projects and then went into the process of creating garments out of paper. The inspirations on which students worked all came from the surroundings. Suchi Smita, Irika Mehta and Kriti Biala from Fashion and Lifestyle Design got inspired from the Rainbow and produced the same in their designs. Aditi Batra chose to create a garment in yellow with square shaped quills. Arushi Mathur and Evangelista not only used coloured poster paper but made best of the waste newspaper . Zara Khurana, Avantika Nambiar and Vivek had come up with a beautiful white balloon skirt with red flowers using quilling.

IAM Conducts Skype interviews
A
dapting to the new technology has always been the trend at IAM. And this time it has been included in the selection process for admissions. The candidates who applied for the admission for the academic year 201314, appeared for the Skype interview with the faculty members and the management at IAM. The major benefit lies in the concept is that they can be at home or workplace and attend the interviews. This boosts the confidence in them to open up before the group of interviewers. It also provides an opportunity for the panel of judges including the faculty members to understand the ‘real’ background of these students. It saves huge time, money and energy on behalf of students and parents. “In this monsoon season, with heavy rains all over, it is a good decision to go with skype interview as traveling out of Mumbai was nearly impossible. We are very happy theat IAM has taken a lead into it” said Jayanti Devi, Mumbai who has registered herself for the Apparel Design and Merchandising program. “It saves lot of money too. A close interaction with Fashion Designer Mr. Snehashish Ray, the faculty mentor
M
r. Snehashish Ray, Coordinator, Fashion & Lifestyle Design at IAM , an ace fashion designer who worked with the Industry’s leading fashion experts and with J.J. Valaya , Ashish Soni , Ritu Beri as his batchmates at Nift shares his experiences in Industry and at IAM. Q. What were your experiences as a coordinator of Fashion & Lifestyle Design(FLD) program? A. I joined IAM in 2009, after serving the fashion industry for 20 years, when I thought it was the right time for me to give back the knowledge to the next generation. Dr. Darlie Koshy, who was my mentor at NIFT took me as the Coordinator of Fashion & Lifestyle program which is 4 year under graduate program.
Although I was not from the academics background, but I picked it up slowly and indeed it was a satisfying experience when you share the knowledge with others. IAM gave me free-hand on designing the curricula, activities, events etc. for the FLD program. As I was from the Industry, I already had an exposure about the gaps in the Industry and hence using my previous experiences I directed my students the correct way. Q. How FLD program is Unique? A. Fashion & LifeStyle Design has an extra Lifestyle alongwith Fashion Designing. Thus, we not only concentrate on Apparel designing but also on Jewelery Designing, Material Exploration, Footwear and so on. This gives
students an overall exposure in the fashion designing along with associated areas. We organize Industry visits, travel to rare locations of India to explore our culture and heritage, group projects, fashion shows to give our students much needed exposure. Q. How FLD students will have an edge over other students when they work with the Industry? A. I promote students to become Entrepreneurs, to setup their own design house with the free flow of Ideas and creativity. It is indeed very nice to hear that there are students who have started their own labels. To name a few, Jayeta Rohilla and Lipakshi Kakar have started with their label named ‘Mae’ and Kanishk Bharadwaj has his own label with the name ‘Har-Yarn-V’.
