DINNERWARE OUTDOOR PLAY

Spielstabil Summer means outdoor fun time, and that translates to fun at the beach or pool. Most traditional sand toys are made from harmful (not to mention not eco-friendly!) PVC and other chemicals, but our Spielstabil toys are free from PVC, BPA and Phthalates making them safe for even the smallest beach-goer. Spielstabil is also the winner of an eco award for their BIOLINE bio plastics.

Following on the heels of the ever-popular fabric details, Love Mae does it again with their newest range of eco-friendly bamboo dinnerware. The recent collection includes summery fruit + veggie dinnerware sets, as well as woodland-influenced sets for the little adventurer. Although we cannot guarantee that your children will eat their peas and carrots, serving them on Love Mae bamboo dinnerware just might do the trick!

TIPS

Water Saving Tips Summer is synonymous with water in all its shapes and forms (pools/beach/slurpies), so we thought it was a perfect time to talk to a water expert to see how we can keep our water use in-check. Follow globetrotting water expert Josh Newton’s (www.joshnewton.xyz) tips below and your grandkids will thank you for not using up all their water: IN THE BATHROOM.

1

Brushing your teeth? Don’t leave the water running. Use a glass to rinse instead of letting the water run.

water bottle (or two) with stones and place in the toilet tank. Ensure there is still enough water for one single proper flush.

5

Try to limit your shower to the If possible, use a dual minimum amount flush toilet, so as not of time possible (4-5 to use more water than minutes or less is ideal) necessary. and avoid baths.

2 3 4

Only flush toilets when necessary; therefore do not use as a trash can or ashtray. To reduce the amount of water in your toilet flush, fill a plastic

6

If running a bath, plug the drain before you turn on the water and adjust the temperature of the water as it fills instead of waiting for the right temperature.

7 8 9 10 11

Plug the sink drain and fill when shaving to rinse your razor instead of running the water. When washing hands, turn off the water to lather. Check for and fix any leaky or dripping taps or pipes. Insulate water pipes.

Install water saving shower heads and low-flow faucets.

IN THE KITCHEN

12

When running water to either to make cold or hot, save the water in a bowl or vessel. You can later this use water to wash vegetables, for cleaning or watering plants. When washing said vegetables, use a vessel instead of running water.

13

If you wash dishes by hand, use a standing basin of water to rinse instead of running water over each item.

14

And if you wash dishes by machine, always use the “Economy/Eco” cycle. This saves on your electricity bill as well. Also, use only when you have a full load. Dishwashers typically use less water than washing dishes by hand.

15

Soak pots and pans rather than letting water run over them prior to washing.

16

Use only one glass for drinking water each day per person, so as to avoid washing multiple glasses.

Defrost food in the refrigerator, in the sink or in the microwave rather than using running water. Keep bottles or pitcher of water in the refrigerator. This prevents from having to run the faucet for cold water. WASHING CLOTHES

19

Use a water-efficient washing machine, if possible.

Adjust the water level to the amount of clothes washed, so as not to use water in excess. Wait to wash until you have a full load.

Use the “Economy /Eco” cycle when possible.

Wash darWk clothes in cold water, which saves on water, energy and helps the clothes retain their color.

TIPS

Ready for adventure Think that having kids means your wanderlusting days are over? Not if Vanessa Boz (www.bozaround.com) has anything to do with it! She and her globetrotting family of 5 make travel look easy, and we were lucky enough to catch up with her to get the travel low-down:

BEST WAY TO BOOK YOUR TRIP (TRANSPORT/ HOTELS/ ETC)

1/ I pay a visit to Daunt Books in Marylebone, my favorite book shop in London. They have the most inspiring travel books collection. 2/ I create bookmarks for each destination and add whatever I find online over time. Then, I print the interesting articles before I go..

RESEARCH YOU DO TO GET PREPARED (AND EXCITED!) FOR A TRIP

PACKING TIPS

I usually check the routes or the hotels on expedia.com, and on mrandmrssmith.com, and then I book directly! I prefer it that way because if there’s a need to make a modification or a cancellation, it’s easier.

Two things:

In my family, we fold! Note: I was amazed when I heard that some people

actually roll stuff in their suitcases. It had never occurred to me. I like preparing everything the weekend before, even if it’s a whole week before, so I can add and subtract here and there until we go. So I make little piles all over the house, and I fold everything in the suitcases the night before. MOTION SICKNESS TIPS

Green tea bags and a small thermos for me, saline water for the five noses in the family (we always complain of dry nostrils on long flights), Paracetamol in tablets for the children so I don’t get caught with a fever on a long flight. Books and old magazines that they subscribe to and might not have read fully (Junior Week, Anorak Magazine, Astrapi..). A favorite snack, usually a peanut butter sandwich with sliced bananas. A set of UNO cards. They each
