linear riBBed rooT ManageMenT ReRoute™ root management barriers are continuous root barriers with integral, moulded vertical ribs for correct management of tree roots. This high density root barrier is supplied in 300mm and 600mm deep rolls. The barrier will deflect the growing roots downward sufficiently to protect a standard pedestrian kerbline from surface rooting. securing large rooT Balled Trees This method of securing trees has many advantages over staking and is suitable for large root-balled trees. The Rootball is held in position by driving three anchors into the base of the tree pit and then fastening the rachet strap as shown. If required, the system can be re-tensioned at a later date. Benefits • A guying system to fully complement Aborgreen tree packages. • Designed for trees in the urban environment. • An effective and out of sight method of guying trees in preference to staking. • Strapping will not cut the rootball, therefore no mats or timber required.

porous Tree piT surface For a hard wearing, attractive, porous tree pit surface, Arboresin is clearly the way forward. Loose stones are a nuisance in pedestrian environments and tarmacadam or conventional paving has the effect of an impervious cap over the tree pit. With Arboresin, the stone is bound together, preventing the gravel migrating beyond the tree pit. Rotary pavement sweepers can easily run over the surface without displacing the stone.

By far the biggest contributor to the high mortality rates suffered by urban trees is drought stress. Water is vital for the growth of trees. It is not only required for all the biochemical requirements for growth photosynthesis, respiration and transport, but also mechanical support to leaf and stem tissue. Insufficient (or inefficient) watering will result in loss of leaf turgor and consequent reduction in new shoot extension. Eventually this will lead to die-back and, if not remedied, the loss of the tree. Waiting until the tree shows signs of drought stress before watering is known as ‘reactive’ irrigation. Whilst this might keep the tree alive, it will often result in stem die-back and possibly long term structural defects in the tree.

Surface irrigation is rarely efficient for trees, the topsoil layer waterlogs, leading to surface run off, soil capping, compaction and wastage. Water has difficulty penetrating the deeper root zone.

If surface is irrigated regularly to a shallow depth, roots will remain near the surface leading to a long term susceptibility to drought.

RootRain waterers deliver water directly to the root zone. This eliminates wastage and reduces the risk of surface compaction.

The roots are encouraged to establish at a greater depth improving long term drought resistance and tree stability. Provides an access point for air and feeding with soluble fertilisers.

Research has shown that trees irrigated ‘proactively’ i.e. by implementing a regular watering regime, have over three times the weight of new roots growing into backfill soil material compared to those watered ‘reactively’.

ROOTRAIN uRBAN irrigaTion and aeraTion sysTeM A large capacity irrigation system with a fixed non-removable grid inlet. The grid allows water and air through but prevents ingress of litter and debris. The RootRain Urban is particularly suited to roadside verge and open space tree planting. The inlets are trimmer resistant and can be set below mowing machine height. They have very little vandal appeal and no theft value, making them ideal for housing estates and public areas.

Benefits • Large capacity 60mm watering circuit. • Easy and quick installation. • Cost effective on the largest or smallest schemes. • Extremely vandal resistant. • Discreet and unobtrusive appearance.

Popular with landscape architects and contractors, the Civic has been widely used on projects demanding a high level of specification.

ROOTRAIN PREcINcT for heavily Trafficed areas The RootRain Precinct is for central urban locations requiring a permanent irrigation/aeration solution. The RootRain Precinct ‘grille type’ has been specially designed to interlock with our ‘Arborsystem’ range of tree grilles. This provides a tamper resistant system which will also prevent the inlet sinking subgrade with any potential soil settlement around the tree. ‘Grille type’ Inlet which interlocks with our ‘Arborsystem’ range of tree grilles. soil sTrucTure sysTeMs The existing soil in urban tree planting locations is rarely a favourable environment for root growth. Common problems occurring in these situations are compaction, low nutrient levels, poor drainage, anaerobic soil and occasionally pollutants. RootCells – for the often confined space tree pits found in urban areas. RootCells utilise topsoil and are also load bearing. These provide the most root friendly alternative. Good drainage is critical to the success of the product.

Usually the most critical area affecting the success or failure of the urban tree is below ground. All too often trees are planted in cramped planting pits in poor subsoil. In such circumstances, growth is retarded and roots will tend to colonise the area immediately below the paving leading to pavement damage. Tree roots require space, nutrients, moisture and oxygen to thrive. Paved surfaces require solid, compacted ground to support pedestrians and vehicular overrun. How then, are trees to be provided for adequately without compromising pavement structural integrity? The RootCell system has been developed following consultation with landscape architects, local authorities and leading tree experts. The concept is simple – topsoil is the most favourable, natural rooting medium. RootCells provide the load bearing structure preventing the soil from becoming compacted and lifeless. Furthermore, the long term root zone can be maintained by incorporating Root Rain irrigation/aeration in the design.

RootCells should be installed on a firm, level, free draining base. The contractor should allow for installing a land drain in areas prone to waterlogging. RootCells should be loaded in situ with a good quality, free draining topsoil. A sandy loam with a neutral pH is recommended. RootCells should be loaded with topsoil and lightly vibrated using a wacker plate. The soil mixture must be dry for this operation. Where exceptionally heavy loading is anticipated, e.g. occasional HGV overrun, it is advisable not to lay modules more than two deep. The load capacity begins to decrease with depth. If in doubt, consult our technical department. Specify the number of modules to be used per tree pit. Quantity will depend on space available and budget â&#x20AC;&#x201C; contact our sales office for costings.

currenT research & developMenT A recent trial was commissioned by a leading New Zealand Council to establish the structural integrity of the Arborsystem Tree Pit. This test was designed and managed by a structural engineering firm, and involved the construction of a complete section of footpath and roadway to Council Specifications. The Arborsystem tree pit was positioned adjacent to the roadway, with the tree centred 900mm from the back of kerb. Extensive pavement testing was conducted with an 8.2 tonne axle load truck, with measurements recorded by a Benkelmann Beam. Despite a total of 400 passes on the roadway, and 200 passes on the footpath, there was no abnormal degradation of the sub-grade and roadway strength was not compromised. fully inTegraTed grille sysTeMs Well designed grilles enable the tree to receive natural water, prevent surrounding soil from being compacted and add architectural flair to the paved surface. Designs vary to function under different circumstances. Grille patterns with smaller gaps are chosen where minimum change to the surface is needed. They will retain planting material but allow the free passage of pushchairs, wheelchairs and supermarket trolleys. Available in a wide range of different sizes, tree grilles can be specified as part of the Arborsystem package, incorporating vertical guard, root management, irrigation and uplighter integration. Benefits • Enables the tree to receive natural water. • Prevents surrounding soil from being compacted. • Adds architectural flair to paved surfaces. • Available in many different finishes including powder coating to any RAL colour. • The grille frames can be disassembled once installed. This gives the contractor the option of planting the tree before or after installation. The majority of our tree grilles are manufactured from cast iron. We now offer a range of fabricated grilles which can be produced in mild or stainless steel. Our range of tree grilles can be made to suit any application. If they are going to be subject to vehicle loading, heavy duty frames will be required for the cast iron grilles, and the fabricated steel grilles will be manufactured from larger section material.

The Woodchuck plastic grille – an attractive lightweight grille, moulded in one piece from recycled material. Available with a galvanised support frame and available to suit both the RD640 and RD1050 Root Director.

The standard paint finish is matt black. This high quality finish is an extremely durable two-pack epoxy paint. Any colour from the RAL range is available as an option. For extra protection on mild steel products zinc galvanising is standard, followed by a high quality coating to any RAL colour. Some grilles and guards are now available from stock. Aborgreen have developed a range of ‘design line’ tree grilles to compliment landscaping schemes of the highest quality. Individual data sheets are available for each grille design. This range can be manufactured in almost any size to suit your designs.

CASTLE: Allows the paving pattern to remain uninterrupted right up to the tree. It can be supplied with removable inner sections to allow for future tree growth. Available in galvanised or stainless steel.

BOULEVARD: A continental style grille manufactured from ductile iron. The surface has an uncoated finish to give a classic rusty finish.

Tree guards offered by Aborgreen are of strong construction and varying design and provide the ideal answer to such problems. The guards shown may be fitted to medium or heavy duty frames or ground fixed when used in parkland. The simple adjusting mechanism allows guards to be easily set on most gradients. Turf reinforceMenT sysTeM The grass reinforcing concept has been quickly accepted internationally to increase and maintain a green environment in the rapidly expanding urban spread. Turf Cells is a 100% recycled injection moulded plastic structural grid system used to stabilise and reinforce grass, to prevent the compaction of the root zone, providing a luxuriant trafficable surface. Studies show that compaction of the top 35mm of soil underneath grass must be prevented. If this layer becomes compacted grass roots are unable to obtain necessary oxygen, moisture and nutrients from the soil, causing the grass to suffocate and die. Turf Cells prevent this compaction. Turf Cells’ design maximises the root development of the grass (over 90% root development area) and is invisible once installed. The grid of rings is immensely strong, capable of supporting fire trucks, aeroplanes, helicopters and other heavy low volume traffic. clOGGER SAfETY STANDARDS Since 1988, Chainsaw Protective Clothing has been made to the New Zealand Standard NZS 5840. In 1997 a joint Australian/New Zealand standard was issued, AS/NZS 4453, which was never enforced. Consequently the original standard NZS 5840 has remained and been the benchmark for the performance of chainsaw protective clothing until now. Current Situation Very recently a test rig has been built in New Zealand that is also capable of testing to AS/NZS 4453. The Occupational Health and Safety authorities of Australia and New Zealand are keenly interested in improvements in technical standards and will be actively working with the whole industry to encourage the adoption of Chainsaw Protective Clothing that is manufactured to this higher specification. The way forward AS/NZS 4453 is a more rigorous standard. To pass it requires approximately 1.5 times as much Chainsaw protective fabric as that required to pass the cut test procedure for NZS5840. This of course adds significant weight and bulk. Since 1997 there have been huge advances in the availability of high-tech fibres e.g. Kevlar and Dyneema, that when incorporated into chainsaw protective fabric offer cut-resistance sufficient to pass AS/NZS 4453 without adding weight and bulk. Our supplier has been actively researching and testing fibres and fabrics for the last three years. The result of their research is ARRESTEX HP – a high performance chainsaw protective fabric. Legwear manufactured using ARRESTEX HP is now certified to comply with AS/NZS 4453. What does this mean for you?

Loopies or Whoopie Slings are an excellent alternative to the traditional Timber Hitch as they can not come untied. The Timber Hitch can be used to attach a rigging block or a friction device to a tree as a lowering devise to lower or hoist limbs. This tendency for the hitch to come untied can be minimized by tucking for a minimum of 5 wraps, spreading out the tucks over as much of the circumference of the trunk as possible, and ensuring that the hitch is loaded “against the bight” whenever possible.

TWO EYE hITchES Two eye tails or eye and eye tails are made from Single End Tenex.

This system offers the climber the benefits of having both ends attached to the saddle as well as a balanced hitch that can not roll out.

cOIlING â&#x20AC;&#x201C; TWISTED ROPES

Great care must be taken in the stowage and proper coiling of braided ropes.

Three-strand ropes should be coiled in a clockwise direction (or in the direction of the lay of the rope) and uncoiled in a counter-clockwise direction to avoid kinks.

Braided ropes have no built-in twist and are far more resistant to kinking, than three-strand ropes. Even if kinks do develop they do not develop further into hockles. The best method for making up braided rope is in figure-eight fashion. The rope should not be hand coiled in either direction as this merely puts turn into the line, which may develop into kinks when paying out. Remember that there is no turn or twist in the line to begin with, so do not produce it by coiling.

Do you need to work flexibly and efficiently at moderate heights? a Hydralada may be your best option! Hydraladas were originally developed to improve the efficiency of orchards — for pruning, thinning and picking — and orchard models are being made more versatile than ever. However, the greatly extended range of Hydraladas have now demonstrated their effectiveness for larger tropical fruit trees, the care of urban trees, seed collection, building, transport vehicle servicing — in fact any application where you need to work at moderate heights. They enable the operator to move quickly from one position to another on rough terrain while elevating. Their advantage is that there is no need to stop and put down stabilising legs, and in some applications it is more efficient for the operator to control the machine entirely with their feet, leaving both hands free to do the job.
