Program Notes

The Charlatan - As was the popular custom of its day, The Charlatan March was extracted from a contemporaneous operetta of the same name. While not his most successful or popular stage venture, The Charlatan did rank second, due partly to the performance and popularity of theater great DeWolf Hopper, for whom the operetta was written. The work was composed while Sousa was recuperating from exhaustion brought on by the stress of touring just prior to the Spanish-American war. This might explain the absence of martial themes from the operetta, which takes place in a rural province of southern Russia. The plot revolves around the typical contrivances or arranged marriages, mistaken identities, and includes a traveling magician and the requisite happy ending. This particular march, consisting of musical material of the final two acts of the operetta, is decidedly lighter than the more familiar militaristic marches for which Sousa is known.

Please silence phones and other electronic devices upon entering the Auditorium. Thank You
