Keep Your Family Strong Sometimes we all need a little support. Protective factors are the strengths and resources families can lean on when they face life’s challenges. Here are a few protective factors, and how you can use them to empower yourself and your family.

NURTURING AND ATTACHMENT

“Our family shows how much we love each other.” Take time at the end of the day to connect with your children with a hug, smile, song or just listening and talking. Find ways to make your children a part of your to-do list; talk to them about what they’re doing, ask them questions, and play games, like “I spy.”

KNOWLEDGE OF PARENTING AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT

“I know parenting is part natural and part learned.” Explore parenting questions with your family doctor, child’s teacher, family and friends. Subscribe to a magazine, website or online newsletter related to child development. Take a class, observe your child, and share what you learn with anyone who cares for your child.

PARENTAL RESILIENCE

“I have courage during stress and the ability to bounce back from challenges.” To take care of your children, you also have to take care of yourself. Take quiet time to reenergize (bathe, write, sing, have a cup of tea). Exercise, share your feelings with a loved one, and surround yourself with supportive friends and family. Setting aside time to take care of yourself will ensure you can be the best parent you can be. Having the tools now will make sure you’re prepared for whatever life throws at you later. These are only a few protective factors. Learn more at childwelfare.gov.
