MEN’S HEALTH Recognized each year in June, Men’s Health Month helps raise awareness for men and their families to practice and implement healthy living decisions, such as making healthy food choices, staying active, avoiding smoking, getting regular checkups, and making mental health a priority. This month also serves as an important opportunity to learn about preventable illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men in the United States—on average—
die five years earlier than women, and at higher rates in relation to heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries. The good news is that making just a few lifestyle changes can significantly lower one’s risk of these ailments. During Men’s Health Month, there is no better time to encourage the men in your life to take control of their health, and for families to teach young boys healthy habits throughout childhood. Here are a few tips for men to stay on top of their game!
DON’T SMOKE. Avoiding tobacco products significantly lowers your risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. EAT HEALTHY. Opt for vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fiber foods, and lean sources of protein (e.g., fish, bison). Try limiting your intake of saturated and trans fats and foods with added sugar and salt. GET MOVING. All physical activity benefits your health! To help you control your weight and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, choose activities you enjoy and get moving. LIMIT ALCOHOL. Too much alcohol can also raise your blood pressure and increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke. MANAGE STRESS. High levels of stress can affect your immune system. Taking steps to learn to deal with stress in healthy ways is an important component of overall well-being. STOP AVOIDING THE DOCTOR. Your doctor just might be your best ally when it comes to maintaining health and disease prevention. STAY SAFE ON THE ROAD. Motor vehicle accidents are another common cause of death among men—wear your seat belt, adhere to the speed limit, and avoid driving distracted or while sleepy. Source: mayoclinic.org

PROTEIN BARS
Packed with muscle-building nutrients, these homemade protein bars feature healthy, whole foods as ingredients—and they’re perfect as an on-the-go, tasty, and energizing snack.
Ingredients
Instructions
1½ cups frozen dark sweet cherries
Preheat oven to 350°F. Chop frozen cherries and place them on two layers of paper towels in a small bowl. Let sit for 30-40 minutes, allowing to thaw and for some of the juices to drain. In a large mixing bowl, combine cherries, protein powder, liquid egg white product, almond meal, almonds, water, honey, almond butter, and vanilla. Spray a baking pan with cooking spray. Pour protein bar mixture evenly into the pan. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cooked through.
