Consider all screens, not just the TV! Many electronic devices have nighttime light dimmer modes to help limit brainstimulating blue light. Take it a step further and completely turn off screens at least one hour before bed. This will relieve your brain from extra information leading up to sleep and make you feel more relaxed.

Check your alcohol intake. Although alcohol can make some people fall asleep easier, it tends to negatively impact a person’s overall quality of sleep. If you tend to crave a drink after a stressful day, try practicing other ways to wind down instead, such as meditation, going for a walk, or connecting with friends.

Rethink your TV choices. If an action-packed thriller, a heavy emotional drama, or even the news gets your blood pumping, that might be a sign those shows are better to watch earlier in the day instead of before bed or limited overall.

Sleep Take Control of Your

&Stress

As most people have experienced, stress levels and quality sleep often go hand in hand. Elevated stress can lead to sleep deprivation, which affects people in many ways, including reduced attention span, memory, ability to connect with others, and much more.

With the new year upon us, now is the perfect time to take control of your sleep and stress, and establish new habits that will boost your energy levels, attitude, and overall physical health.

Keep a notepad by your bed. Whether it is writing down the to-do list that is running through your head or journaling about your worries from the day, the act of putting it on paper tells your brain that it does not have to think about it anymore that night.

Practice slow, deep breathing. Try to do this throughout the day and as you lie in bed preparing to fall asleep. Picture the “box breathing” technique when you are working on calming your breath.

Get moving! Exercise can be a great stress reliever and helps the body crave sleep at night. Just make sure if your workouts are in the evening, they don’t awaken your body too much before bed.

Sensational Salads

Love salads but looking for some variety? Get your new year started on a healthy path by trying these enticing winter salads and dressings.

Mediterranean Chopped Salad

SALAD INGREDIENTS

¾ cup chickpeas 1 avocado, cubed 1 cup grape tomatoes ½ cup pepperoncini ⅔ cup salami, julienned 2-3 bundles romaine lettuce, chopped 4 ounces feta cheese, cubed ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)

DRESSING INGREDIENTS

½ cup olive oil

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon Greek seasoning

1 clove garlic ¼ teaspoon sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Add all dressing ingredients to a high-speed blender and combine until creamy and smooth. Set aside.

Chop lettuce and add to a large bowl. Add remaining salad ingredients.

Add dressing and toss until salad is coated. Top with grated Parmesan (optional).

Chicken Salad with Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette

SALAD INGREDIENTS

10 ounces corn

½ red onion, diced 1 head romaine lettuce, chopped 1 cup grape tomatoes, sliced 2 cups chicken (white meat) ⅓ cup cilantro, chopped 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1 teaspoon smoked paprika ⅓ cup red bell pepper, diced ½ cup roasted pumpkin seeds 1 avocado, diced Salt, to taste Pepper, to taste

DRESSING INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons white vinegar 3 teaspoons chipotle sauce 1 cup cilantro leaves, chopped ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup JUST Mayo 1 clove garlic 2 teaspoons honey 1 lime, juiced ½ cup grapeseed oil ¼ teaspoon cumin

INSTRUCTIONS

Place corn and half of the red onion on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Roast at 425° F for 15 minutes. Let cool and set aside. While corn roasts, prepare vinaigrette.

Add all dressing ingredients, except grapeseed oil, to a high-speed blender and combine until smooth. Then slowly drizzle oil into blender to emulsify.

Add all salad ingredients, including remaining red onion, to a large bowl. Add cooled corn mixture, top with dressing.

Toss together and enjoy!
