A WORD FROM CHAIRMAN KEITH ANDERSON W
e’re in the midst of spring, which seems like a great time to reflect. Throughout the past couple of months, we accomplished a lot on many different fronts. None of this would be possible without the support of our Community Members and employees. On behalf of the entire Business Council, we appreciate each and every one of you and your hard work and contributions to the SMSC.
There’s lots to look forward to in the coming months at the SMSC. After weeks of practice, one of the tribe’s biggest and most exciting events takes place this month, Young Native Pride. On May 19, SMSC Youth will showcase their Dakota culture through song and dance for a live and virtual audience. You can join in the celebration of Mdewakanton Dakota culture via livestream at hocokatati.org/ynp. The following day, the first-ever Dakota Language Bowl will kick off and participants will compete for the title. On May 29, the SMSC will honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. armed forces at the Memorial Day Ceremony. I invite you to attend these events and take part in honoring our Dakota culture.
In addition to events, the SMSC offers many employee programs and discounts. Check out this month’s feature article to learn about the many benefits. I encourage you to take advantage of all the SMSC has to offer—the tribe is dedicated to being a destination employer and helping employees lead fulfilling lives. Over the last year, we’ve added a few more benefits, including a gas discount at both Shakopee Dakota Convenience Stores, a new PTO structure, and updates to our current enterprises that already offer discounts such as The Meadows at Mystic Lake. If you’re a golfer like myself, I highly suggest taking a swing at the golf course and checking out the renovations that happened during the off season.
Again, thank you for all you do to support us as a tribal nation. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by Business Council.

Dakota Corner SMSC to Host its First-Ever Language Bowl
Hoċokata Ti is set to host the SMSC’s first-ever Da ota Iapi Akiciyapi (Dakota Language Bowl) on May 20 from 9am-5pm in the Place of Gathering. Hosting a competition at the SMSC is the latest example of Hoċokata Ti’s effort to revitalize and sustain the Dakota language. Since the Dakota Iapi Típi was founded, weekly language tables have helped Community Members strengthen their Dakota language knowledge, and monthly family nights have introduced the language to new speakers.
During the competition, participants will be asked to demonstrate their Dakota language knowledge during four rounds by speaking, singing, and taking quizzes.
Challenges will include having a conversation with judges, showing knowledge of Dakota words and phrases, and singing a traditional or common English song in Dakota. Teams of three people will compete in one of four categories: youth beginner, youth intermediate, adult beginner, and adult intermediate.
All are welcome to participate in or attend the language bowl. Teams that register by May 13 will receive a free T-shirt. Same-day registration is accepted but does not guarantee a T-shirt.
Visit hocokatati.org/dakota-language-bowl to register, view study guides, and for more information.
Honoring Military Heroes on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. armed forces. In Native American culture, warriors are held in the highest regard, and we are honored to employ active service members and veterans across the SMSC. On behalf of the SMSC Business Council, thank you to the brave men and women who served (or are currently serving) this country in the military.
Piuŋdapi (We are thankful).

SMSC SPOTLIGHT: Dakotah Meadows RV Park
Since opening on Memorial Day weekend in 1994, there’s rarely been a summer night when the Dakotah Meadows RV Park hasn’t been completely full of happy campers. Orignally opened as a lodging alternative to Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, the RV park has built a customer base that returns year after year. Even before the campground opened for its 30th season in mid-March, all seasonal sites and most summer weekends were already sold out.
Dakotah Meadows is one of the most centrally located RV parks in the Twin Cities and is a short drive from dozens of local attractions, yet it still offers guests with a serene and relaxing experience. The RV park has 122 paved sites tucked around a small pond and plenty of amenities to provide guests with a worry-free getaway. It offers both back-in and pull-thru sites, full water, sewer, and electric (30 and 50 amperes) hookups, showers and restrooms, laundry facility, outdoor pavilion, three fuel pumps, and a 24-hour self-serve RV/car wash with scaffolding so customers get to those hard-to-reach places.
The staff consists of five experienced employees (three full-time and two part-time) who are responsible for providing guests with an exemplary experience and memorable stay. Their duties include answering phones, taking reservations, assisting at checkin, maintaining all of the amenities, and helping guests with whatever they need during their stay.
In September 2022, Travis Lankin took over as manager of the park after nearly a decade at Mazopiya and has used his retail background to make several enhancements. New this season, the office is open longer hours, the retail section of the office is remodeled, and free gourmet coffee is available to anyone who stops in. Other changes are also in the works. To better serve those who typically stay at the park, plans call for the playground to be replaced by a dog park. Looking ahead, the team will continue to analyze how it can improve the overall experience for guests.
“I believe we are in the perfect location for campers who are seeking more than just a place to park their RV,” Lankin said. “We have so many great attractions nearby, and we have the best pricing for sites compared to local competition.”
Dakotah Meadows

GOOD STEWARD OF THE EARTH
Encourages guests to recycle with recycling bins strategically placed around the RV park.
In addition to all of the amenities the RV park has to offer, guests also receive a 5% discount at Mazopiya and free shuttle service to any SMSC enterprise within the Community. The city of Prior Lake has announced plans to close a section of County Road 82/154th Street NW directly west of County Road 21/Eagle Creek Avenue NE starting on May 15 in order to repair a water main.
The closure is anticipated to last approximately two weeks. County Road 21/Eagle Creek Avenue NE will remain open to traffic. Pre-warning signs will be posted starting May 1.
Additional info will be posted on beacon.
Did You Know?
The Health and Wellness Department hosted a spring blood drive at Dakotah! Sport and Fitness in early April as part of an ongoing partnership with Memorial Blood Centers.
During the drive, donors gave a combined 78 units of blood—62 units being from whole blood donors and 16 units from double red cell donors. These combined donations have the potential to save the lives of 234 hospital patients. This year, a record number of 15 donors were first-time participants in a blood drive.
With an ongoing critical blood shortage happening in the United States, these routine events help ensure that everyone has access to the care that they need. Thank you to everyone who participated in this important lifesaving initiative!
For information on future blood drives, please visit smscwellness.org or watch for updates in upcoming issues of Our Source, episodes of SMSC Live, and on beacon.

Participate in Help Protect Mother Earth
Part 1: What is composting?
Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter into valuable fertilizer. Microorganisms, bacteria, and insects break down organic materials such as food scraps and leaves into nutrient-rich soil.
Any organic materials like fruit, bread, twigs, coffee grounds, or eggshells can always be composted. Additionally, SMSC enterprises use BPI-certified compostable dishware, so be sure to compost your to-go containers after grabbing food from Mystic Express and your cup after you finish your coffee at your office. Soiled paper products like used tissues, paper towels, napkins, non-coated paper plates, wood stirrers, and food-stained cardboard can also be composted. Basically, if the item you are discarding is a plant, a part of a plant, was made from plants, or it’s something you could eat, it's compostable. When disposed of at the SMSC, this material will make its short trip down the road to the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility to become compost!

No Mow May
Join the movement that began buzzing around the United Kingdom in 2019. No Mow May encourages homeowners to forgo mowing their lawns during the entire month of May. The main reason to hold off on mowing is to help supply a food source for early emerging pollinators including bees and butterflies.
In spring, there are limited flowers available for insects to feed on, including violets, clovers, selfheal, and dandelions. Oftentimes, dandelions receive a bad reputation for being a weedy invader of turf grass, but they are an excellent source of food for insects. When lawns are allowed to grow undisturbed through the month of May, more flowers—including dandelions—are available for pollinators.
Being a good steward of the earth offers another benefit to No Mow May by helping to improve air and water quality by not using gas-powered lawn mowers for an entire month! Consider taking part in the movement this May—the butterflies and bumblebees will thank you!

ForeSIGHT:
5 Common Myths About Vision and Eye Health
By Dr. Michael Parolini, Optometrist at the SMSC Vision Clinic
There are many myths surrounding vision and eye health. Understanding fact from fiction can lead to a lifetime of great vision and healthy eyes! Read about some of the common myths below and view the facts that correct them.
Myth #1:
Eating carrots will improve my vision. Fact: Carrots contain vitamin A, an essential vitamin for visual processing. Eating a lot of carrots, however, will not impact your clarity of vision or your eyeglass prescription. Additionally, vitamin A is necessary in only very small amounts and can be obtained through other food sources (e.g., spinach, fish, and dairy) or from supplementation.
Myth #2: Sitting too close to the TV will damage my eyes. Fact: While sitting close to the TV can cause eye strain or fatigue, it will not cause physical damage to your eyes. Sitting up close will also not cause refractive error (eyeglass prescription) to develop. There are muscles in the eye that control your focusing system and these muscles need to work extra hard when focusing on a near object. Prolonged use of these muscles can lead to eye strain, fatigue, or headaches but will not cause physical damage to your eyes.
Myth #3:
Wearing glasses or contact lenses will make your eyes dependent on them. Fact: Using glasses or contact lenses will not make your eyes dependent on the correction. Eyeglass prescriptions typically come from an imbalance in the focusing power of the eye and the shape of the eye. Glasses and contact lenses bend or refract light to help offset that balance. What people will often perceive as becoming dependent is just the fact that they enjoy the benefits of clear and comfortable vision that glasses or contact lenses provide.
Myth #4: Reading in the dark will harm my eyes. Fact: While it may cause more eye strain or fatigue, reading in dim light does not cause damage to the eyes. Prior to the advent of electricity, people would use candles or moonlight for reading. “More light, more sight” is a common saying in the eye care world. However, reading in dim light will not cause damage to your eyes.
Myth #5: My vision is perfect, so I don’t need an eye exam.
Fact: Excellent clarity of vision and healthy eyes do not always go hand in hand. Just because a person has 20/20 vision doesn’t mean they don’t have an eye disease. Many individuals with an eye disease like glaucoma or macular degeneration can still have 20/20 vision. Sight loss from these conditions often goes unnoticed until permanent, debilitating damage has occurred. Having 20/20 vision also does not guarantee good eye movements, tracking skills, depth perception, or accommodation.
A comprehensive eye exam will assess not only clarity of vision, but also your ocular and systemic health. Did you know that an eye exam can identify early warning signs and manifestations of more than 270 systemic and chronic diseases?

Dakota Kinship Program to Offer FREE FOOD for Employees and Team Members
On May 31, there is an opportunity to receive free food and produce for being a part of the SMSC family. With the cost of groceries and gas, the Dakota Kinship program wants to help SMSC employees and team members alleviate some of the burden by hosting a food distribution event—exclusive for those working for the SMSC.
Last fall, the Community Member program, Dakota Kinship, offered a free food and produce event to say ‘thank you’ to all SMSC employees and team members for their hard work and dedication to the tribe. The event had record participation, helping to feed nearly 2,000 families!
The food supply will be provided by Second Harvest Heartland and will include a variety of food and produce. The food distribution event will take place on May 31 from 3-6pm near the team member parking lot behind Mystic Lake Casino Hotel. Employees and team members are welcome to drive through or walk up to receive the free food and produce items. Participants are asked to bring their SMSC employee badge and a cooler to help keep the food cool if you plan on picking up before your shift starts. FREE
