Class for Kids Explore the Buzz About
Bees
Encourage your kids to befriend the helpful honeybee! Wozupi Tribal Gardens is hosting a class July 26 to help you foster children’s natural curiosity about our bug buddies—and dispel any rumors about them (for instance, honeybees are not aggressive!). Your child will explore bee-friendly flowers and see inside an observation hive, with no risk of getting stung. Participants will plant flowers— food for the critters whipping up Wozupi honey here at the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Sign up now at wozupi.com. Bees for Kids Tuesday, July 26 | 3-4pm Instructor: Victoria Ranua Location: Wozupi Tribal Gardens Cost: $20 for a family with two children ($5 for each additional child) Honeybees make the world go round. As pollinators, they help food grow and give us a tasty natural sweetener—honey, of course!
And that’s just a couple examples of how bees help us.
Start Your Summer on a Safe Note Before you hit the pool this summer, let’s hit the books. The National Safety Council is making it easy by providing helpful factsheets and tips on a variety of safety topics throughout June— National Safety Month. One of the more looming issues for the Land of 10,000 Lakes? Water safety. Here are some tips to keep your family safe.

TIPS TO PROTECT KIDS AROUND WATER
Pay attention. Teach children to never go near water alone—an adult should always be present and actively supervising.
Stay close—within an arm’s length from infants and toddlers in the water. Even at pools with a lifeguard, always watch over children of all ages.
Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death among children 1 to 4 years old. That translates to 30% of all preventable deaths in that age group. Drowning accounts for 14% of all preventable deaths for children 5 to 14. Remember: Drowning can happen silently, in seconds, in as little as an inch of water. Dakotah! Sport and Fitness and Mdewakanton Public Safety are great local resources with CPR and babysitter classes available.
Use a good life jacket. Toy pool floats don’t cut it. Use a life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to be safer.
Be prepared. Make sure that you (and anyone caring for your children) are trained in CPR.
DIY: Do it Yourself DAD ROCKS PAPERWEIGHT This Father’s Day gift can be made lickety-split—and with few supplies. Between things you can forage for in your pantry and outside, you might already have what you need to make this easy, kid-friendly craft.
YOU WILL NEED: ¼ cup salt ½ cup flour ¼ cup water bowl
cookie sheet ½ cup pea gravel (or other small stones or pebbles your kids can find)
Instructions: Preheat oven to 250⁰F. Mix flour, salt and water together in a bowl. If dough is too sticky, add small amounts of flour until it’s doughy and pliable. Be careful not to add too much, as the dough will dry out and your creation will crack.
