HERITAGE MONTH

uring November, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month as an opportunity to provide awareness and celebrate the rich history and many contributions made by Native Americans. This month is full of opportunities to connect with our family, friends, and culture through the food we all love.

Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC), a federally recognized, sovereign Native American tribal government located in Prior Lake. The SMSC has a rich history and culture focused on the values of living in harmony with our surroundings and sharing the natural and material resources with others.

Some background and a quick history lesson: The majority of Native American populations were hunter-gatherers before the Europeans arrived. They relied heavily on food and ingredients that were readily accessible to them in the regions that they lived. Each tribe not only had its own language, but also dishes that set them apart. Many of the ingredients gathered and used were in season, contributing to each region’s own culinary identity. Native American tribes also developed techniques and recipes that would help them survive harsh climates and circumstances by making food last longer.

In alignment with its goal to be a good neighbor, good employer, and good steward of the earth, the SMSC owns and operates a variety of enterprises that support these values. For example, Mazopiya offers a wide variety of organic fruits and vegetables, many of which are produced just down the road at the SMSC’s organic farm, Wozupi Tribal Gardens. Mazopiya also carries many other Native American products produced locally, including maple syrup and wild rice. Stop by during Native American Heritage Month—or any day—to peruse the many Native-made options available to you and your family!

AUTUMN DIFFUSER BLENDS If you’re in the mood to cozy up this fall season, try one of these autumn diffuser blends to welcome the colder months with a warming scent.

Pumpkin Pie Ingredients 1 drop clove essential oil 1 drop nutmeg essential oil 5 drops cinnamon essential oil

Deep in the Woods Ingredients 4 drops cypress essential oil 2 drops white fir essential oil 2 drops sandalwood essential oil

Instructions Place essential oils in diffuser according to your diffuser’s instructions.

When you carve your pumpkin this fall, rather than just tossing the seeds, roast them in the oven or eat them raw for a nutritious snack. Pumpkin seeds, also called pepitas, are a natural source of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids that can add an array of nutritional benefits—and a satisfying crunchy texture—to any dish.

SALE $5.39

Bergin Fruit and Nut Company Raw Pumpkin Seeds 11 oz | Reg. $7.39

While whole roasted pumpkin seeds are typically only eaten as a snack, the green pepitas can be used in a variety of ways. With their sweet, nutty flavor and high oil content, pepitas are a great substitution for pine nuts in pesto. They add flavor to breakfast cereals, granolas, smoothies, and can be worked into whole-grain bread doughs or muffin batters for extra flavor and texture. Pepitas can even be used in place of other nuts in desserts or confections, such as brittle. They are also great in salads, rice pilafs, burritos, tacos, or dishes that could use a pleasant crunch.

Bergin Fruit and Nut Company Roasted and Salted Pumpkin Seeds 7 oz | Reg. $7.39

Three Sisters Soup

As the temperature continues to drop, warm up with this delicious harvest soup made with the nourishing trio of corn, squash, and beans.

Ingredients

Instructions

4 pounds winter squash

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Slice your squash in half and scoop out the seeds, then roast for about 40 minutes. Allow to cool once soft, then scrape out the flesh and save the liquid for later. Blend until completely smooth (you can use a food processor or blender).

2 small yellow onions, diced 1 bunch green onions, sliced ¼ cup garlic, chopped 2 teaspoons dried thyme 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 quarts vegetable stock (or water) 1 large bay leaf ½ cup white wine ¼ cup olive oil 1 pound fresh or frozen corn kernels 4 cans cannellini beans

2. Sauté onions in a large pot over medium heat until brown. Add garlic, thyme, and black pepper, stirring until the garlic turns brown as well. 3. Pour in the vegetable stock and follow with the bay leaf, wine, and squash. Allow it to simmer for a few minutes before adding the rest of your ingredients. Simmer for about 20 minutes total.
