CHILDREN
Physical Activity After Summer Break As summer vacation winds down and families are preparing for back to school, it’s important to keep your kids active during the school year. This can be challenging, because school usually means sitting for long periods of time, colder outdoor temperatures, and less play time. Keeping them active, however, is critical to a long, healthy life. The kids will sleep better, have stronger muscles and bones, manage their weight, have a decreased risk for obesity-related diseases, such as Type II diabetes; have an increased sense of well-being and confidence, and have better academic motivation. To help your kids remain active, focus on these three key motivators •The right activities for their age • Opportunities to be active • Making it fun! Kids that enjoy an activity are more likely to be engaged and want to participate. Also understand that not all kids will be athletes, and to identify non- athletic activities that will appeal to these children. Parent involvement and encouragement is vital for kids without an athletic drive or interest. For age-appropriate activities and more information on motivating kids to stay active, visit Kidshealth.org/parent/nutrition_center/staying_fit/active_kids.

The Facts About Immunization Concerns about vaccine safety? Vaccines save lives and protect against diseases. If you don’t immunize, you’re putting your child and other children at risk of catching a deadly or dangerous disease. Thanks to modern day vaccines, these diseases have dramatically declined. Vaccines today protect children and teens from 16 diseases that can otherwise have terrible effects.
